It was late, but while most people’s day was coming to a close, Batman’s was just beginning. The streets of Gotham City were ominous at night, but knowing Batman was usually around somewhere in the shadows provides the citizens of Gotham some comfort from their harsh environment.
He grappled down from a high ledge into the back lot of an abandoned apartment building. The sound of high heels echoed through the night as he waited in the middle of the parking lot.
“Well, hiya B-man! Was wonderin’ when you’d show up.”
Harley said while popping her gum before circling him curiously.
“What’re ya here for anyway?”
“You don’t know?”
“No! I don’t know what you two are up to half the time. I guess I’m just along for the ride.”
Harley grinned mischievously. Did she really not know or what she lying? It’s not always easy to tell. He looked behind her at the door; curious as to why she was alone.
Harley laughed and sat down on the sidewalk.
“He told me you’d ask. Don’t think you can handle talkin’ to me? I don’t bite! Usually…”
Bruce wasn’t in the mood tonight and was trying to make it clear.
“I’m not here for games, Harley.”
“Hey, I never said you were! Look, I don’t know why Mistah J wanted to meet with you tonight, all I know is he told me to wait for ya out here.”
She shrugged and took out a nail file from her purse.
“Guess you’ll just have to ask him ya self…”
Bruce sighed and looked at her as she fixed her nails; ignoring his intimidating presence. He felt like she was telling the truth, but that still didn’t tell him why he was told to meet them.
Just as he went to ask for more information, he heard a familiar voice.
“Evening! Fine day for a chat, isn’t it?”
Joker strolled up to him casually; seemingly glad to see him.
“What do you want, Joker?”
“I just want to have a nice casual talk. I know you’ve been seeing someone else…”
Bruce’s expression went from stoic to clearly confused.
“What are you talking about?”
“See, you haven’t had much time for me anymore. It seems someone else is occupying your time…”
Bruce tried to hold back a smile as he finally understood.
“You’re jealous because I’ve been dealing with Superman, aren’t you?”
Joker laughed; his metal teeth gleaming under the night sky.
“Jealous? Why of course not! No, I just miss the time we used to spend together.”
“Most of that ‘time’ ended with you back in Arkham.”
“But that’s all just part of the fun, darling…”
Bruce knew Joker was jealous. It was obvious. It happened any time he was dealing with someone else. He hoped it wouldn’t get out of hand.
“I’m leaving. I don’t want to see you again tonight. It would be in your best interest to stay out of trouble. That goes for both of you.”
Harley smiled and waved from the sidewalk.
“You got it! No trouble from us…”
She and Joker exchanged glances and looked back at him innocently.
“If you need us, we’ll be right here. Come by anytime…”
Bruce looked at them both and knew better than to think this would be the last he heard from them that night.
He grappled onto a nearby ledge and disappeared into the foggy night. Joker and Harley smiled deviously.
“Bats told us to stay out of trouble. Think we should, Boss?”
Joker held out his arm; helping Harley stand up from the sidewalk.
