The infamous ’Skyfall’ house from the 007 movie of the same name [2012 MGM/Sony/Columbia] is supposed to be situated in the barren rural lands of Glen Coe, Scotland, however the property was purpose-built from scratch at Hankley Common, Surrey, England. Interiors, designed by Dean Clegg, were shot on a soundstage at Pinewood Studios.

CS recently gave an interview in Glamour, and it’s not what you would expect. It’s not like the interview with Teen Vogue, he doesn’t talk about KJ, sexuality or gender, but he does talk about his hatred of the word “dark” to describe the show, his hatred of what BH has become, and says SH is PR without directly saying so, so on that note, let’s dive in.

To start with, this interviewer is a SH and BH shipper. She uses any opportunity she can to bring it up, which is literally all she does in the first three paragraphs, classy, anyways, CS doesn’t rise to the bait, not once.

CS is getting more brazen with his hatred of the show. HE INTERRUPTED THE FUCKING INTERVIEWER HE WAS SO ANGRY! When it started he thought it had potential cause it could be different, now he’s finding it hard to not say “I hope it burns like Cheryl’s house.” So, let’s break this down, just a fair warning, this analysis is going through this entire interview, so it’s going to be long as hell, cause I’m breaking this down thought by thought.

CS is visibly angry. Saying something makes you sick is not something to be taken lightly. And it’s obvious where this visceral reaction comes from. CS saw this show as film noir, a modern day Brick, a take on Black Hole. the word “dark” includes none of that. Dark doesn’t mean anything. A room being dark means a lack of light, dark is not a synonym to complex or surreal, but that’s what the show is. When the actors and creators use the word dark, they diminish not only the power of the show, but the intellectual nature. The fact that, as CS has said before, it’s playing with the teenage archetypes, that it’s a satire. You do not have to be smart to watch this show, but you do have to have a mindfulness to enjoy it the way it’s meant to be enjoyed. The word “dark” makes it elementary, Gossip Girl had dark moments. Riverdale isn’t that. It’s a flat term with no descriptive qualities. CS is trying again and again to keep the intellectual level of the show high.

The final line gets a paragraph entirely of it’s own.

People just went ape-shit with it.

He repeats this sentiment throughout the interview. That the crowd mentality took over and everything lost all meaning. The idea is that when fans latch on to something, anything, they don’t let go. When RAS etc started calling it “dark,” that became the buzzword. What media outlets used, what reviewers used, I’ll explain it again later, but this is what happened with SH. The strategy used to create SH is the same strategy that spread “dark.” CS spends this entire interview talking about fan crowd mentality and the image of a perfect relationship that overtime the media has trained us to latch onto. He never says the word SH, but this is the first of many times he touches on it without actually touching on it.

Okay, so this time he does let the interviewer finish their question. CS went on a twitter rant about this a few days ago, the idea of “romanticized violence.” And, shocking to no one, he doesn’t like it. In the previous question he says it’s horror not dark, but what he means by horror is violence. To him, horror and violence are akin to each other, and that speaks volumes about his morals and values above everything else.

And then he mentions how little agency he has. Such an interesting place to put that buzzword. He mentions agency at least once every interview, but adding it here is odd, unless he REALLY doesn’t like the direction the show is going in, at least violence-wise.

His monologue then takes another fascinating turn. We get one of the few glimpses he still gives into HIS views on the show.

Riverdale and the tone of this classic Americana that we really sell speaks for a larger, stranger fondness for this older America that is running like a current underneath a lot of the U.S. political mindset right now.

Wait, what, this is a political show? That’s the first I’ve heard of that. But, it makes sense. This isn’t about a small town, it’s about the dark underbelly that no one knew existed. It’s like a much less in your face version of Designated Survivor. Using archetypes and the looming status quo, Riverdale is able to weave our horror filled reality into this formerly sleepy town. Oh, now I get it, THAT’S where horror comes in. With this year being dedicated to gun violence, and every late night host making at least one monologue including all the times political figures have said “now is not the time to talk about gun violence” after a shooting, Riverdale jumps right into the middle of it, without hitting the metaphor over our heads. If this is what we are in for during season 2, I am more than on board.

When someone uses the words “inappropriate” and “reassess” to describe their fans, I’d say something is gravely wrong.

CS entirely ignores the question, he doesn’t address Betty doing shit for Jughead, and he doesn’t address Toni Topaz, rather he takes two lines and runs with them.

Should Bughead fans be worried that someone could come between them?

BH fans should be nothing. They control nothing. They have no say in shit. And the fact that this interviewer thinks otherwise is, as CS so eloquently put it “pretty inappropriate” They don’t control the storyline, just the media attention that goes along with it. Fans, and SHs in particular live in this imaginary world where the media outlets are god. A source doesn’t mean shit. None of those publications have to verify anything. The National Enquirer  used to be unique, but now it’s just the only publication that is honest about what it is.

BHs/ SHs control the media, not the show. And that’s just as much of a problem because

for anyone that feels so comfortable and so behemoth in believing anything about the way they want the show to be run, I would say reassess why you would think that.

THE MEDIA IS NOT THE SHOW, THE MEDIA IS NOT LR AND CS. THAT is fan service, the show, itself, is not. And that line is getting blurred more and more, and as CS says at the end of this section

Truthfully, as an actor, it’s not fun to act.

Drama creates interest. PROGRESSIVE STORYLINES CREATE INTEREST. BH is either of those things. It’s this fantasyland that belongs on the Small World ride at Disneyland.

I have read post after post of fans saying they will stop watching if Barchie or Jarchie were to happen. It’s a television show. It’s not your fanfiction. The world doesn’t revolve around you and neither does this show. The idea of BH being end game does not make sense in any capacity. TV shows evolve. That would be a monotonous pile of mush. People grow and evolve and change. Two 16 year olds saying I love you after three weeks has nowhere to go. That was the climax. Unless they fucking get married this season, as an actor that’s the “wow” moment. So of course BH is going to break up, maybe they will get back together once or twice, but that’s it. There are only so many storylines a Romeo and Juliet can go through. Remember, they commit suicide at the end.

Many many Archie fans are having a problem with this response, however, I’m not, at all. This show is stereotypes, not fucking with them, like all shows are trying to do these days, but rather exploiting them. And it’s the exploitation that is supposed to make us think.

Varchie is an inherently sexual couple. It’s like the villain in shows, we are supposed to hate them, but we are also supposed to see ourselves in them and feel for them, that’s why villains work. It’s the same thing here. Archie and Ronnie are on the surface a sexual couple, but there is more underneath that even though the main goal is to show off the stereotype of two horny teenagers who don’t understand the world. “sexpots” is a stereotype, just like “intellectual” those meanings bend and twist like you wouldn’t believe. This is not about making Archie and Veronica look bad, it’s about setting up the exploitation of the next season, oh, and destroying little BH hearts in the process.

“Pornographic perversion” is…harsh. Very harsh. He could have said something much lighter like “sexual relations” but perversion shows a sense of disgust. He’s disgusted by the sexual nature of the fandom. And, that’s not just about BH. It wouldn’t matter if he was with LR, “pornographic perversion” does not leave room for, “but not in some cases” The sexual fantasies of the fandom DISGUSTS him. And he’s not being shy about saying that.

First of all I’d like to slap the reporter for talking like that, and yes, I know you are a SH, and yes, I’m sure you are one of the Tumblr users who told me to kill myself back in April, and now I am talking directly to you. THIS IS DISGUSTING.

CS handles it really well and is extremely direct about it. And here is where SH comes in.

Media trains people to like these two characters; she’s the over-achieving girl next door, and he’s the more reserved thinker and guarded kid. They’re both cute and emotionally understanding and trying to have this stable relationship in a sea of bullshit; from an audience perspective, that’s really appealing.

Media has trained us to want a certain kind of relationship. LR and CS have both said on separate occasions that they were probably cast cause they are like their characters.

The media training works because there are outside forces involved. It’s not just the TV shows and movies, it’s the fact that not only were Troy and Gabriella the perfect couple but so were Zac and Vanessa. it’s not just the idea that Bella loved Edward despite the fact that he was a fucking vampire, it’s the fact that Kristen loved Rob despite the fact that he HATED fame.

One does not work without the other. The stability of a winning TV relationship relies directly on the stability of the actors. There is a reason that shows like Famous in Love don’t have this kind of Media attention (the Tumblr kind). Bella Thorne isn’t Paige Townsen, though she can act like nobody’s business, fans cant’ connect the character to the actor and the illusion is lost. BH only works cause that illusion is still intact. The idea that LR is Betty and CS is Jughead. The media has trained us to need that like a drug. And it’s gone too far. We need the NA meetings now.

Honestly impressed that they managed to slip LR into the question even though, based on the rest of this fucking interview, they should be clear by now he doesn’t have a damn good thing to say about that entire situation.

First off, the first sentence is blatantly false. KJ speaks constantly on how CS has prepared him for being famous. Whether it’s how not to be recognized or how to do an interview, though, we also know by now that CS may be a narcissist but that stops when it comes to his profession. He does not like giving himself credit for anything. Certainly not advice.

The next interesting point is when he brings up having a guardian, cause that suggests an innocence and certainly a naiveté he’s not afforded anymore. He’s doing this alone. He has to make mistakes and figure out the consequences without someone else running interference.

Something tells me he’s talking to someone, mostly because he switches from “I” to “you” This entire rant is directed specifically at a certain person, and though I don’t know who, the girl who makes Tumblr posts based on what fans write on a tag dedicated to her non-existent relationship probably isn’t a bad guess.

You wonder what he thinks of her, here is your answer.

Then he switches back to “we.” As a child actor he’s had to unlearn everything.  Everything he was taught, everything he was made to feel, everything that was ingrained in him, and college did some of that, but not all. By being in Vancouver, he’s not home, it’s not as much of a struggle not to fall prey to the chaos. I idly wonder if that has something to do with why he took the job, that it wasn’t filmed in LA.

He’s said this before, he mentions Dylan and then “fourth wall” as if it’s as common a combination as Oreos and milk. I was reminded of KJ’s Instagram post. And it occurred to me that almost every line in this post is a variation of this Glamour interview. So this was probably a phone interview and KJ was sitting there when they had the interview. He too pointed out “don’t break the fourth wall.”

CS has this idea that he and Dylan doing a project together after Zack and Cody would ruin the project. He never thinks of Dylan as an actor, but rather his brother. And it’s a strange connection to make cause actors play different roles all the time. But we have to remember, this interview isn’t about actors, it’s about fans. SH breaks the fourth wall, in fact, that’s all SH is. And, he makes it clear, he thinks that “it’s wildly inappropriate,” and, he’s right.  The enmeshment between cast and character is almost unbearable. Dylan joining the cast wouldn’t’ ruin the show. But it would ruin his ability to be his own person, his own actor, to not be Cody the most gay coded stereotypically nerdy (as a bad thing) character in all of history. Dylan joins and it’s not just Jughead who’s 16 again.

So those are my thoughts, I know this is long, but I had a lot to say this time. Looking forward to waking up to all your reactions!
