When I visited South America (mostly Bolivia, though I spent some time in Argentina and Peru, too) in early 2009, Llamada De Emergencia by Daddy Yankee was all the rage. It was playing ALL OVER, ALL THE TIME. I didn’t at the time know the song or the artist or even the genre at all, and it wasn’t until I got home and did a lot of googling (but I didn’t remember enough of the lyrics to find what I was looking for) and then just random YouTube surfing that I actually found what the song was. And while I’d been somewhat irritated by the omnipresence of reggaeton, a musical genre I wasn’t at all used to hearing, in South America, when I got home it just reminded me of the amazing trip, and I ended up liking this song very much. Yes, it’s sappy and a bit cheesy, but it’s also pretty clever, musically enjoyable and INCREDIBLY catchy.
