we read about loves from so long ago and we REMEMBER. when catullus scrawled his passion out in wax, when clodius stayed faithful to the wife he adored, when cicero lost the girl he affectionately called tulliola… augustus and livia, hadrian and antinous, alexander and hephaistion… we REMEMBER. did they know we would sing about them? did hadrian ever wish he could tear down the empire so that he could dig antinous out of the ashes, did he ever wish he could scream out his beloved’s name… did he know we would hear him?
we listen, we listen, we listen, and we remember
