Hey! I found your blog recently and I also just started listening to MFS and I really like their music. I'm a bit lost as to where to start to learn more about them and their motivation/thoughts behind their music since it's been a couple years since they've debuted. What would you suggest?

Hello (^^)v Welcome to the fandom.

I’m guessing you probably discovered them through their more popular songs like ALONE, 不可逆リプレイス or the more recent ones like Missing You. Firstly, too many people get caught up in singer Hiro’s family relations and ignore the other members. So, I would highly encourage a new fan to NOT follow that crowd XD

There are basically 4 aspects to MFS that all fans need to know OR you won’t understand the band and what diehard fans talk about:

1. Band members & the personnel changes.
2. Their musical roots especially the main songwriter Sho Tsuchiya + their twin band named fromus.
3. Hiro’s lyrics in relations to his life story.
4. The important people in their team especially their boss GEN, A&R exec KTR (Kentaro Suzuki) from Japan Music System (JMS) & circle of friends. Also, their earliest mentor K ( Kei Goto) the late singer of Pay Money To My Pain (PTP).


1. Sho Tsuchiya ~ leader, guitarist, main composer (currently only functions behind the scene & as a non-touring member)
2. Nob @ Nobuaki Katou ~ bassist
3. Teru @ Teruki Nishizawa ~ guitarist (many like to categorize him as rhythm guitarist when Sho was in but I personally disagree because he played both lead & rhythm guitars even from the 1st album)

MFS current members “deactivated" from public social media in early 2016. So, don’t bother looking XD


Sho’s hiatus:
Sho remains as a member. He announced his hiatus in October 2015. I won’t call it “inactive" like some people do because he’s still composing with them and most recently served as the Sound Producer for ANTITHESE. He’s just not a touring member for now. He didn’t give specific reason other than family matter.

Drummer change:
Masaki didn’t state why he left but it looked like he didn’t want to be tied down to only one genre of music. He was active playing outside MFS before his departure. So, he probably wanted that musical freedom even though he loves MFS. But his decision was enough to badly crush the two youngest members at the time, Hiro and Teruki, from what I observed. Those two younger men were still emotionally dealing with Sho’s hiatus at that moment.
Kid'z is their friend / labelmate who had always got along well with Teru & Hiro. He had worked together with Sho & Nob before too. Co-incidentally, his band officially split up in Nov 2015. So, he was the natural choice to replace Masaki. But Kid'z was drumming as a sessionist musician for singer ナノ(nano) at the time MFS took him. He stopped using his real name and took on a stage name Kid'z* after that. 

* I personally don’t use his real name in public anymore out of respect for his decision. Understandably, he was initially worried about MFS fans’ reaction. Also, it was and probably still is an awkward situation for him regarding his former bandmates when their band split up and he went to their biggest rival band just a few months later. So, I chose to respect his wish to start anew.


On my blog so far, the interview that tells their formation year story the most is this one from GEKIROCK.

My Japanese listening ability is not up to that point yet though, sorry. Hiro explained how he and Sho met at a PTP concert. Couldn’t catch what Sho said about Hiro & Masaki with the music playing in the background :-/ Hiro also said he and Teru knew each other when they were high school students. Well, the GEKIROCK interview is a pretty good picture of their history.

Ignore whatever musical comparison people made about them and OOR. The real band to compare MFS to is their real twin band fromus, a piano-rock unit. I made an entry about them here.

I personally feel that musically, MFS first two albums are the direct guitar edition fromus. Just take MFS, change the singer & then the guitars to piano. You’ll get fromus.


They do have influences from old school hard rock & metal. Sho and Nob are already in their 30s. Both men said they started on guitar with British rock legend Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water. Guitarist Teruki grew up with a heavy-metal-music-loving father and would often cite Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica as his early influences.


If you want to see their musical & lyrical evolution, try to listen to their songs chronologically from the 1st album to the current work.

Sho let Hiro be in charge of lyrics writing from the start (from an interview for Yamaha Music).

Hiro comes from a famous family thanks to his parents and his successful brother. As a result, he was heavily thrashed on the internet by people who disliked his “easy entry” into the music industry. Hiro used to be very active on Twitter but the criticism against him soon turned into cyber-bullying. I personally had seen the cruel things people wrote about him on Japanese 2ch forum.

I can only guess what happened that drove Hiro to leave social media. Other than abusive online comments, some people probably took advantage of his Twitter presence by sending inappropriate messages or even being intrusive about his brother Taka’s personal life. He tweeted an angry response about 2ch on 14 Feb 2013. Then he wrote on his blog on Ameblo (now deleted / deactivated(?)) that “people’s words can hurt". A few months later, he tweeted “I started blocking fucked up people" in English. Not long after, he tweeted his final tweet “Goodbye forever" and abandoned Twitter in Sept 2013.

He then channeled his anger through the song BLACK RAIL in 2014. He explained it in this interview.

From then on, a lot of his lyrics reflected what he was going through while writing them.

It must be noted that the special project singles ALONE & 不可逆リプレイス (Fukagyaku Replace) were written for the themes of those projects. Hiro talked at length about ALONE around its release and there are a bunch of them that I posted on this blog.

不可逆リプレイス / Fukagyaku Replace was made for the historical anime Nobunaga Concerto. Interesting to note that Hiro wrote the lyrics not from the main character Saburo’s point of view but the other guy Michi. The lines, “I don’t know why but you saved me ………… “ all the way to “I will follow you ….. keep you close to me,” were directly inspired by what Michi said to Saburo in the finale or Episode 10.

The lyrics of Someday are for the late K.
Hiro said in Kaohsiung, Taiwan that “This is a very important song to me,“.

Lastly yet very important, don’t believe any ridiculous claim about Hiro and his brother Taka hating each other because they don’t. You’ll find such comments at some point, I’m sure. ギターがしばし旅立ちました...!| My guitar went on a little journey...!

 in which Kashitaro got a little high…

It has, at last, reached the point where my guitar has been entrusted to the hands of the repairmen at the repair shop.

The guitar that has worked so hard for me for seven years.

Even during winter in Kawasaki when it’s snowing and the temperature is below freezing point,

or during the summer in Yuigahama when temperatures rise over 40ºC,

or braving the rain during the rainy season,

or when 20 days out of a month were spent outdoors,

or when I didn’t change your strings for 3 years because they didn’t snap,

the guitar that worked so hard to produce sounds for me,
that Gibson J-45 Rosewood Custom,
has finally been sent to the repair shop.

And the reason was, the sound.

One day, when I was strumming as usual,
I thought, Hmm? It’s kind of different…!

It wasn’t cheerful.
The sound wasn’t cheerful.

Even the rockstar guitarist, Shibata-san, who joined me for rehearsals that day, pointed out the same thing.

Not just me, if even others have noticed this,
does it mean that the guitar which robustness I was so proud of,
has finally reached its limit?

That was what I thought.

If it were a professional guitarist who was just a little on the fussy side, he would send his guitar for maintenance at least once every six months.

This just shows how delicate a living musical instrument like the acoustic guitar is.

Ever since I bought this instrument, I have never pampered it, which is to say that I’ve never given deep thought to anything else and just strummed it everyday with all my might.

For song compositions and of course live performances, it’s always this guitar.
We’ve written so many songs together at Tamagawa and Sumidagawa.
Even the music tracks in my album, I recorded them with this guitar.

As to why I’ve never sent it for maintenance throughout these seven years, it’s because the sounds that my guitar produces have never changed, and I thought that it was alright not to.

To be frank, there were more than 10 times that my guitar fell from its stand when it was blown by the wind during street lives.

And when there was a huge earthquake, it also easily fell neck-first.

Even so, my guitar has always continued to produce the same unchanging sounds,
and I started to think that it was always going to be alright.

It was naive of me.
As expected, using it for seven years without maintenance was a push too hard.
Because I myself noticed the change in sound it was starting to have.

With that said, while weeping I decided to send my guitar for maintenance.

Of course I thought that it was better to send it to be repaired earlier, but to be honest, if it isn’t this guitar, I can’t think of any melodies at all…

I also own another travel guitar, but it’s a little difficult to think of ideas with its sound…!

So in the time when it’s under repair, I’ll use my travel guitar for song compositions.
With that in mind, I weepingly sent my guitar for maintenance.

I got the repairman to take a look at my guitar.

“Somehow, recently the sound sounds a little tired, like it’s lost its vigor and shine…
I suspect it has got to do with age, or the physical impact from dropping it so many times,
so maybe the neck has become crooked or there are some holes which caused the change in sound…!”

was what I told the repairman.

“I see, then let me take a look at it for a while,” was what he said as he unstringed my guitar and looked into the sound hole.
He knocked on the body and inspected the curve of the neck.
He carefully inspected it for about 20 minutes.


“I’ll be honest here, but I can’t find any problems…?”

was what he said…!

It’s got to be a lie right???
was what I thought so I asked him again.

There seems to be quite a lot of dents on the body (probably from dropping it so many times) but they’re not deep enough to damage the internal structure.

And even though I did nothing to the neck throughout these seven years, it was not in the least crooked at all.

And as for the rest, the wood of the internal structure didn’t have any splits or cracks at all.

However, the change of sound still remains a fact and when I told the repairman once again, he said,
“I don’t think that would’ve happened though, why don’t you play it once more for another listen?”

So heeding his suggestion, I restringed my guitar,
and when I strummed it…!

The usual sound was produced.

What on earth was that!!!!!!!!!

I had an inkling as to why this happened.

It was the strings.

I usually use “Martin Acoustic Light Range” strings for my guitar.
One pack costs about 600 yen.

It’s the most standard item out of all standard items that every music shop in the world would be selling.

But when I went to the music shop in Shinjuku the other day, it (looked as if it) wasn’t on sale.

Hmm? It’s such a common type of guitar string, maybe it’s sold out?
But, it’s such a standard item so it’s kind of unthinkable that it’ll be sold out. Is this music shop going to be okay?
I thought as I started needlessly worrying.

As to how unthinkable this situation really is, let’s use CD shops as a comparison.

Whichever CD shop in Japan you go to,
there will always be the albums of Mr. Children, EXILE, and SEKAI NO OWARI on display.

It might be possible to find a shop that doesn’t carry any of their CDs at all if you search hard enough.

But to not carry all three of them?

All three of them??

We can safely say that the shop isn’t a fan of these three artistes,
but is this CD shop okay?!
Isn’t this an emergency?!
Lo-lo-love somebody tonight?!
(t/n: at this point kstr is high and he’s using all sorts of Japanese memes. They’re all really random and I’m really sure what they really mean or when they should be used, but they’re ドラゲナイ and ラララサムバディトゥナイ in Japanese)

as such was the situation.

I came up with a comparison that’s more relatable,
but even if I didn’t do so, there are a lot of other examples I can think of.

In an electric guitar shop, there aren’t any Gibson or Fender models.

In a livehouse, there isn’t a mic from SHURE.

In a pet shop called “DOG&CAT”, there’s only the Medaka fish (Japanese Rice Fish).

The next chapter of Hunter x Hunter is published in Shonen Jump.

In SMAP, Kimura Takuya is missing and Mori-kun has made a comeback.

There’s no hypocrisy in the 24-hour television.

The ending of Yu Yu Hakusho’s Makai Touitsu Tournament has been clearly drawn out.

In Honey and Clover, there’s no Honey.

In “Hello Kitty in collaboration with Mickey Mouse”, Minnie’s face is completely destroyed.

Melos isn’t full of rage.

Togashi-sensei I’m begging you please do your work.

That’s about it.

If these things were to really happen in reality, we would definitely feel as if something is out of place.

Yes, it was such a grave situation.
That is, that there were no “Martin Acoustic Light Range” strings!!!

I was left with no choice, so I ended up buying strings from a brand that I didn’t use.
Because I really had no choice, I ended up stringing my guitar with the strings that cost 399 yen.

I totally forgot the fact that I bought these strings while thinking, “It’s 200 yen cheaper than usual I’m in luck!”
I TOTALLY forgot about stringing my guitar with these strings…!!

Of course it would produce a sound void of its vigour and shine!!
And I learned that there’s a lot of difference in the sound made by strings which cost 200 yen cheaper…

Martin Acoustic Light Range” costs 600 yen, but there are even more expensive strings out there.
There are some that can cost up to 1500 yen, and I’m sure they’ll produce a sound on par to their price…!!

I don’t know whether a more expensive string will produce a better sound,
but I learnt that the sound produced by the 399 yen strings were not good at all!

With that said, there was actually no problem at all with my guitar.
And since I was already at the repair shop, the consumable parts of the guitar were completely worn out, so they offered to replace them for me.
Also, it seems like even though the internal structure wasn’t damaged, the dents will also be straightened out so that holes won’t form.

That’s why I’m able to get it back within 10 days!


To think that I fell into despair when I learned that it might take up to two months at other places…!

With that said,
I pray that my guitar will come home
much, much more healthier than before!!

And actually since there wasn’t any problem with the sound, after the dents have been straightened out by the repairman, I’m actually looking forward to hearing an even better sound!!!

But you know, I’m a little touched…
The acoustic guitar is really a “living” instrument.
On top of not being as durable as electric guitars,
it also takes a lot of skill to do a proper maintenance.
It’s a musical instrument that requires a lot of care and love.

Even so, I’ve never pampered it, I leave anywhere and everywhere,
I play it anywhere and everywhere,
and I bring it overseas even if it’s not stored in the hard case.

Even though I treated it so much more harshly than the average guitar owner!!

For it to not have any problems,
that guy has seriously worked its hardest for me.

No matter how much I work it, for it to not have any problems,
to me, felt like it was saying that it wasn’t dissatisfied at all…

“What a resilient guitar,” I thought and without knowing I was on the brink of tears.

Really, thank you so much.
Because of you, I was able to create so many great songs,
I was able to find the greatest partner, and I’m able to sing anywhere and everywhere.

Because even after such treatment you’re still as sturdy as before,
I might’ve worked you to the bone until the day you die.

Please come back soon. I want to play again!!!

I digress a little, but the strings that I was talking about had a change of packaging which I was unaware of, so they were actually on sale as usual…

URUHA R&R 067 Part 1


the first live after the World Tour Uruha thought something like: so quiet!

seems like they had many seconds thought about going to amerika, But Uruha loved the equipment backstage-they had games,popcornmaker & basketball basket backstage and he played until short before the live

Uruha liked the Dallas live the best/ Because they couldn’t take all of their equipment with them they had to to create some tunes with computer

Uruha thinks that personally for him he’s getting stronger through worldtours and would like to perform more frequently oversea- especially for the USA he doesn’t want it to be a once in a lifetime thing

In brasil there wasn’t a platform,so they asked for one bc a livehouse usually has them right? but it wasn’t really affixed. But Uruha didn’t knew it was like that, jumped in AGONY on the platform, the platform moved and he fell down. At this moment he didn’t feel any pain, but felt really embarassed and his injury was quite bad… in the break he saw that his pants were torn and his leg was full of blood a doctor came and helped him, gave him pain killers- but they were so big, Uruha had troubles gulping them and felt even worse after it- so worse that he even didn’t want to drink beer anymore

For Taiwan there were many cosplayer- not just gazette ones, but also lolitas, somewhat anime likes, and some that looked like other band

for europa his impression was that the people grew up, and became stronger

he things the influense of the internet worldwide is awesome- his impression is that the Oversea fans are checking the PV on YT because they don’t understand japanese ergo the SNS of the guys

Uruha won’t get a twitter because he’s not doing any SNS, and because he has nothing he’d want to say there- if he’d say something it would be related to gazette and that is already done by the other members and the official account. Twitter can’t give him anything so he won’t start it. he also things that Twitter is reducing the distance between fans and artist, and that can cause many troubles too, so he thinks it’s better to have some distance to fans. also he doesn’t like it thatyou can see which bands has contact with wich band (I guess bc smaller band tend to use this to get popular) Twitter bears to many risk- but he also says that the artist who’re doing Twitter are really rock-like bc they’re living with these risks.

he never wanted to stop the blogs- bc he likes it a lot better than the SNS.It’s because you’re taking your tme to write, re-read it and then upload it, so you won’t do rash things you could regret later. he says that blog might be old fashioned, but that it suits him.

Uruha once met with Yoshiki (X-Japan) for lunch and it made him super happy that Yoshiki told him that he thinks Gazette is a good band, bc they have fighting spirit. As Uruha told this to the other members they were all so happy and were really motivated to continue even better.

the thing that is really important to continue a band for so long is, that they talk about everything. even until someone of them is crying. because all of them are stubborn and don’t want compromises, these situation happens, but they talk about it until everyone is understanding. if someone really doesn’t want something they have to say it- he wants them to say it. If they don’t say it, the other members won’t understand why they’re not progressing with their problem

they’re talking about the time where Aois condition was really bad and if they talked about this too. at this time it seemed as if the guitarist did’t get along- but now it isn’t like that anymore. But at that time, it had seemed as if Aoi put some distance between him and the gazette. At that time the understanding how gazette should progress was different, so the frustration in aoi bottled up. It was the time where he did many other things beside Gazette.Everyone had their doubts about him, but in the end it was Uruha who said that he can’t be like that and becaue the mood was kind of cold it seemed as if it was a problem between these two- even though it was in the whole band. Uruha says that even though they’re both guitarist they’re pretty different. While Uruha is the balanced type who doesn’t show emotions, Aois the exact opposite, and really emotional

but what’s more important than the kg you lose is how it looks on your body. That’s why it’s a little difficult to just watch the weight. For example if you get muscles your fat reduces, but muscels are heavier, so even tho you thought you lost weight you didn’t. But your body is getting thinner, right?

the livehouse being hot as hell aside, today the people are really fired up too.
those were nice smiles.

Also I was shocked that the livehouse today was apparently unfinished.
that’s why the air-conditioning didn’t work.
it’s like a discipline training, this tour. (laugh) ***

certainly it is the kind of feeling only lives abroad have

Metallica fans even sing out guitar solo parts together so, one day I want to create guitar solo or bass solo that can be sing in chorus too.
