Problematic BiRacial Shit
This post is most likely going to offend you. Especially if you’re a blorke.
I’m Biracial. I have the skin tone, the hair texture, the features… You CANNOT look at me and mistake me for a white person.
I CANNOT be cast into roles playing white girls.
Do you need to be told Idra is a POC, or Lincoln, or Pike, or Jaha? No.
How about Monty? or Anya? Or Raven? No.
Why? because they can’t pass for anything else.
The point? It isn’t imaginary that “white PASSING” racial minorities are treated with favoritism. Crack open a history book. Message a casting director. Pull up IMDB and see how many POC are cast in white roles that you never bothered to notice or care about.
“Whitewashing” doesn’t just occur when white people play POC, it occurs when white passing POC are cast in white roles.
Saying that a character is white isn’t the same as hating/devaluing the ethnicity of the actor.
Saying that a CHARACTER is WHITE isn’t the same as being RACIST.
EXAMPLE: You’ve probably seen or watched Prison break/The flash ect and Seen Wentworth Miller..
He is BIRACIAL he’s mixed with black and white.
Does that change the fact that he plays white characters? with white siblings, and white parents? Does that make him good POC rep? Do young biracial brown boys look at him and see themselves?
Because for someone to be representation you have to fucking be represented by them.
To be racial representation you have to represent the fucking race.
An actor you feel represents you does not mean the characters do.
A character you feel represents you does not mean the actors do.
While minorities and underrepresented groups in general are a lot more invested in fictional characters. ACTORS ARE NOT THE CHARACTERS THEY PLAY and vise versa.
[the same way Alycia is not lesbian representation, Lexa is.]
