This photo, possibly by a Chicago Daily News photographer, shows Joseph “Diamond Joe” Esposito standing in a room full of children sitting at tables covered with plates of food and milk bottles in Chicago, Illinois, reaching over and shaking hands with a child. Diamond Joe was often referred to as the Mayor of the “Valley,” Chicago’s Little Italy. He often helped out many of the local labor unions and Italian immigrant families in exchange for their support of his growing power base.
