————-

My favorite thing about people is that they’re always born color co-ordinated. Your eyes always go perfectly with your hair. Your hair always goes perfectly with your skin. Every little freckle and mole is always specifically tailored to your skin color, so it’s never out of place.

Every single hair, even if some individuals may be lighter or darker, always go together beautifully to create your own unique hair color. Sure, it may be similar to someone else’s, but your hair may have a few more strands of darker hair or more strands of lighter hair or more strands of a mid-tone. Your hair color is yours. Your texture, too. Some people’s hair is coiled–either tightly or loosely or somewhere in between–or it’s wavy like the ocean. It can also be smooth and straight, or it can be frizzy and all over the place. Human hair is magical.

And your eyes? Don’t even get me started on your eyes. Some people just water it down to a simple hue range, like “blue” or “brown,” but it’s always more complicated than that. Sometimes, that blue is icy and cold, or it can be darker and warmer. Sometimes, that brown is a nearly black brown that looks mysterious and yet warm, but sometimes it’s the type of brown that looks golden in the light of a sunset. Sometimes, your green eyes may be the color of long-lost sea glass, sparkly and minty, or it may be the dark green of an eventide forest. And the shapes of human eyes? Gorgeous. Thin eyes likes thistle seeds, wide eyes like a doe’s, eyes shaped like appleseeds… eye shapes.

Oh jeez, and there’s still the texture and shape of a body. Some bodies are soft and warm, with stretch marks and pimples all over. Some bodies are taut and smooth, with nary a mark in sight. Some bodies are hard and strong, defined by visible musculature. There are bodies that are all in between, too! Muscular bodies and tight-skinned bodies with pimples and marks all over, soft bodies and taut bodies with prominent muscles, strong bodies and soft bodies that are smooth and markless… the possibilities are endless!

Oh, and I haven’t even mentioned body shape yet, silly me! Pear shaped bodies with wide hips and small torsos, triangular bodies with small hips and large torsos, straighter bodies with the same size on the bottom and the top… and even little things are different, too. Long fingers, short fingers, wide fingers, thin fingers. Wide arms, long arms, thin arms, short arms. Round heads, sharp heads, long heads, soft heads, hard heads, square heads. Small waist, big waist, long waist, short waist. Big belly, soft belly, hard belly, round belly, small belly. Big hips, little hips, wide hips. Big thighs, small thighs, thin thighs, soft thighs. Big feet, little fit, thin feet, wide feet. Big toes, little toes, long toes, short toes, thin toes, wide toes.

Gosh, and human faces are practically endlessly unique. Your nose can be flat and close to your face, or it can be long and pointy. It can be crooked, or it can be straight, or somewhere in between. Your nostrils can be big or small, wide or thin. And your mouths, goodness gracious… thin lips, big lips, thin bottom with big top, thin top with big bottom, they can be pink or red or even nearly white. They can have dimples on the sides, and your teeth can be in any number of unique combinations and positions. Your cheeks can be high or low, and they can be round, or they can be sharp, or soft. Your forehead can be big or small. Your ears can be fully or partly attached, and they can be big or small, wide, thin, or round… You can be wrinkled and aged or smooth as the day you were first born, you can have pimples and scars…

So many possibilities!!! And this isn’t even all of them!!!!

Human bodies are amazing. All bodies are amazing. Your body is amazing.

No props, no photoshop, no fancy outfits or blankets. Just natural light and a supermodel newborn!

The Unexpected Arrival: Part Four

This story was inspired by Acid/C2ndy2c1d (http://c2ndy2c1d.tumblr.com) and her undying loyalty for one of my favorite cartoons, Courage the Cowardly Dog. And since she’s shown so many wonderful drawings to help sate my cravings, I thought I would write something in exchange.

This particular scenario is inspired by her awesome comic:

Summary: After Muriel and Eustace’s passing, the Middle of Nowhere finally seems too empty for Courage. But some familiar, frightening faces will soon change all of that.

Review: "Blind Sober" by Little Big Toe

Last we checked in with Jimmy James Cutrera was March of 2013, he had just released his first full length Coin Toss Timelines, which wow-ed audiences with a new perspective. Jimmy James’ sweet singing and intricate musical stylings, previously featured as the backbone of NJ indie-psych-folk favorite Accident Seabirds, was then brought front and center, and accompanied by a slew of multi-instrumentalists. Blind Sober is written in a similar style, except JJC has completely taken matters into his own hands by writing, performing and recording all his own music. Jimmy James’ most recent undertaking has been studying and mastering the drums specifically for this album. The only instruments not played by JJC himself are horns and strings, performed by some familiar NJ faces.

Although usually somewhat reserved in demeanor, JJC really lets loose on Blind Sober.

All 18 songs own a certain air of wisdom and masterful word-play. It feels as though Jimmy James has been holding back some contemplation about life and how most people go about living it.

Specifically in track 7, “Ahem,” (which seems to be cleverly named after the modest throat clearing at the beginning of the recording), JJC rips into serious questioning of modern life. “Eyes don’t lie, that’s why you write letters, with a diamond shaped eye and the dialect of a sailor”… “Cream and sugar kill the taste but that’s the way that most prefer it.”

Another show stopping track, and my personal favorite, “Pulled Hamstring,” compares ending a relationship to pulling a major muscle. It comes in with some appropriately somber and dramatic soprano sax, played by the locally renowned Andrew Demos. “It wasn’t such a clean break more like the pulling of a hamstring, in the span of your eyes blinking to your favorite song.”

Be warned this album is not a casual listen, boasting 18 songs, lasting a total 1 hour and 20 minutes. It is for those looking to get lost in a critical analysis of life’s tougher questions. Jimmy James humbly offers his personal and innermost ideas with an impressive backdrop of musical accompaniment, that clearly suggests a meticulous nature and care for his art. you can purchase your own copy of Blind Sober at the official album release, tomorrow, Saturday July 26, at The Saint!
