ok so I’m going to leave out stuff that’s Too Obvious, which means a lot of this is niche (to me) or contemporary, and… I recently had a canary on twitter about how much ~*~modern~*~ poetry GETS MY GOAT. I’m reading a lot of New poets/collections this year purely because I… didn’t really read that much contemporary stuff before, and I thought I should branch out. (so far I’m dubious.) so, yes – obviously Plath, Blake, Hughes, Sappho, Eliot, Keats, Shelley, etc. etc. ad nauseum, The Greats, yadda yadda, here’s some others.
so far this year I’ve read (and ENJOYED - I’m not reccing the ones I wasn’t into/thought were pants, soz):
Letters From Medea by Salma Deera
Grief Is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter
Hold Your Own by Kate Tempest (I actually LOVED this)
Mouthful of Forevers by Clementine von Radics
War of the Foxes by Richard Siken (of YOU’RE SITTING IN A CAR WITH A BEAUTIFUL BOY, AND HE WON’T TELL YOU THAT HE LOVES YOU, BUT HE LOVES YOU fame)
I’ve also read and loved:
Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth by Warsan Shire
The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy by Tim Burton
The Curse of the Vampire’s Socks and Other Doggerel by Terry Jones
Love Poems by Carol Ann Duffy
Let Us Compare Mythologies by Leonard Cohen
my personal 10/10 all-time go-tos are:
Crush by Richard Siken (despite appearing on every single tumblr graphic between 2011 and 2013, it still gets me in the heart guts)
The World’s Wife by Carol Ann Duffy (which I have loved wholeheartedly since I was 17 years old)
pretty much any collection of Great War poetry: Up the Line to Death, Men Who March Away, Lads: Love Poetry of the Trenches (the Great War poets are my favourite. like, of all poetry, ever)
my favourite individual poems, as we’re on the subj, are:
Anwen approaches palpatine!Luke with fruit juice pooling in her dimples and gleeful laughter in her voice. She brandishes her half-eaten Hutt cake and sticks her tongue out at palpatine!Luke. “NO CAKE FOR THE EMPEROR” she yells before running back to her dad, giggles trailing.
“yOU uNdeResTImAte mY
pOWeR” cackles palpatine!Luke as he lurches out of his chair. He hunches
his back and pretends to claw the air before stalking after Anwen, only
to stub his toe on the foot Leia sticks out.
“IVE BEEN DEFEATED”
palpatine!Luke dies dramatically. Luke emerges to a room of howling
laughter and giggles, smiling like the sun.
This is the greatest thing anyone has ever added to one of my posts.
At one point in the evening, Kadee serves Palpatine!Luke a Hutt-cake so badly burned it’s literally inedible. Luke makes a show of trying anyway, and then loudly and peevishly snaps, “Vader! My kitchen droids are malfunctioning again. Fix them!”
“At once, my Master,” says Anakin, already passing out a whole tray of burned Hutt-cakes to the free droids in attendance, who are lining up to give their “treats” to the Emperor. DV-S, who was once the memory wiper droid for the Imperial Palace and is now free and also entirely too fond of terrible puns, somehow manages to find a cake even more burned than Kadee’s.
Anwen brags about defeating the evil Emperor for weeks after the party. If pressed, she’ll grudgingly allow that Leia helped.
Needa is mostly amused by this but also still mildly stunned by the idea of openly mocking the Emperor, even after everything. (“That’s why we do it,” Anakin tells him later. “There’s nothing that Depur hates so much as being laughed at, because laughter robs him of his power.”)
Oholi and Anwen decide that beating the mean old Emperor is their new favorite game, and Luke is regularly enlisted to play the villainous role. (With, admittedly, not nearly as much makeup or prep for his performance. But they don’t mind.)
Once word of Luke’s talent for impressions gets out, he’s in high demand among the ranks of the Rebel/Republic fleet.
Pretty much everyone already knew that Leia is the reigning champion of insult battles, which makes her an excellent foil to Luke’s Palpatine, and they often appear in double acts. Occasionally Anakin gets in on it too, sometimes playing a spoof version of himself, sometimes doing impressions of a plethora of other Imperial Moffs and fleet officers.
keith, within 0.2 seconds of entering a room: where’s shiro?
the “it’s good to have you back”/ “it’s good to be back” callback in s2
i don’t necessarily think this was their first interaction after being reunited in s1 (like presumably keith gave shiro clothes to change into etc. before this exchange) but i love that they both remembered & referenced it in s2
the fact that keith’s very first scene involves him tenderly touching shiro’s face
how adamant keith is about shiro being the One True Black Paladin™ (”you mean your bayard”)
shiro’s complete and utter faith in keith’s abilities as a pilot / leader:
sending keith to chase rolo through the asteroid belt
having keith pilot them to the BOM headquarters, which is located between two black holes (bonus: the way he’s 100% certain keith can get them back on course when one of the black holes starts drawing them in)
supporting keith in infiltrating zarkon’s ship despite it being dangerous bc his trust in keith outweighs everything
the way keith always rushes to shiro’s defense when he’s incapacitated / out of commission
“at this moment, your friend desperately wants to see you”
the way shiro, who is generally very controlled in his actions, feels comfortable enough to relinquish that control a little and drop his ~leader facade when it’s just him and keith
just overall how soft they are with each other, both in terms of tone of voice & expression
Yo this is not an informational post. This is an emotional rant based on things Ive heard and not confirmed. Just a psa
So I love stranger things two and the more I think about it the more I love Billy Hargrove and want to see his character broken down and put through some interesting development in future. Trouble is, this simple desire is apparently highly controversial on the tungl dot come because of the demand for ideological purity and teenagers with no dissociation between fiction and reality being given an anonymous internet megaphone to broadcast their frustration with the world. I’m no stranger to such anti fandom discourse, I tend to like dark characters and ship dark ships (where dark = problematic) so Im used to the whole “ew gross these people are horrible bigoted nazi pedo[hile abusive dog shit lumps because arbitrary fiction opinion” thing though I’d be lying if I said it didn’t bother me at all. I’m a pretty sensitive person so yea sometimes it hurts but whatever that’s my problem rationally I know that none of this matters. love isn’t real. death is certain. embrace the void.
So anyway Billy. Oh Billy. My dear sweet sweet self destructive asshole trainwreck of a baby boy. Important to note is that I did not love him immediately. At first I hated him. He seemed really obnoxious and pointless. Then the last episode happened. We’ll talk more about that later.
I started to get into the Billy and harringrove fandom subset a bit and let myself hope for character development. Then I heard that apparently the creators of the show have confirmed that they’re not going anywhere with Billy’s character because he’s just the new villain. um….ok….what
(i haven’t actually been able to find the source for this but hey im a pessimist so lets just assume it’s true while staying open to it being false. wow what a concept. mental flexibility.)
And I know there are a lot of fans who would like this as well, for Billy to just be the one dimensional villain and hopefully be brutally killed off as soon as possible.
And I gotta tell you guys…that is just terrible writing.
Like I said I hated him at first. He was mean and obnoxious and had a stupid mullet and did nothing of value and why was he even here? Apart from obviously being meant to contrast with Steve to prove how much better he is now which…cmon…did we really need that? Do we not have eyeballs? It felt stupid and condescending and I was truly annoyed everytime he came on screen. Gradually I became intrigued by just how fixated on Steve billy seemed to be. That was weird. Didn’t know what to make of it. Then episode 9 happened.
so hey any writers out there, if you want me to all out hate and not care about a character who you only meant to be a one dimensional villain, here’s what you dont do; you dont contextualize his behavior in a relatable and sympathetic way. Revealing his father’s abuse made soooo many things about Billy suddenly make sense. It even painted some in a new light as I looked back and realized just how self destructive most of his actions are. A lot of people also began reading him as gay, which Im not so sure of since tv loooves to queerbait, but I do agree it’s a perfectly logical interpretation of what we’ve seen. The whole scene was a giant “ooooooohhhhh” moment. With that little piece of context as to Billy’s perspective on his family (that he fears his father, that he is responsible for Max under threat of violence and thus resents her, etc) his character suddenly became…an actual character. An interesting character, that I want to see more of.
I cant for the life of me think why they decided to add this scene if they intended Billy to be a flat villain that we’re not supposed to care about. It utterly baffles me. Why? Why would you do that? This show is full of amazing, complex characters whose entire appeal is that they feel real and have flaws. So why would you add another one, but tell us that he’s not supposed to be complex or real and we’re just supposed to hate him and accept him as the dull bully villain?
I hope to god that these things Ive heard aren’t true because if they are I have a sinking feeling that the writing in this show is about to take a nosedive.
