The second in our poster series HONORING BLACK WOMEN in this year’s Black History Month. Today, Surya Bonaly shines!

Bonaly is French-born, but received her U.S. citizenship in 2004. She competed from professionally 1987-1998, and remains the ONLY figure skater in the world to successfully complete a  one-bladed backflip. The move was a response to the unjustly low score given to her in the Short Program, a score that was undoubtedly a result of her race. The move was ruled illegal on the grounds that flips require two blades, while jumps require one.

She has won awards around the world and is a Vegetarian and animal rights activist.

Here is a video of her amazing backflip!

The third installment of our Honoring Black Women series!

Claudette Colvin, a young activist in Montgomery, AL, was the FIRST to refuse to give up her seat on a bus. She defended her actions saying she paid her fare just like everybody else.

Rosa Parks was deemed a more “appropriate” symbol for the boycott because Colvin did not have the preferred skin and hair texture, as well as becoming an unwed mother shortly after.

Colvin is getting credit where credit is long overdue now. Phillip Hoose is writing a book, Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justiceabout the woman who was miles ahead of us all.

There’s an interview with Colvin at NPR, here!

TOMORROW NIGHT, award-winning journalist and newswoman SOLEDAD O'BRIEN will be speaking at the Schaefer Center @ Appalachian State University. Doors open at 6PM and is FREE!

O'Brien is one of the most critically acclaimed journalists of her time, reporting for CNN, HBO, and Al Jazeera. She has received countless awards, including an award created in her name by Morehouse School of Medicine to “recognize outstanding catalysts for social change.”

She helped create and anchored in the CNN documentaries Black In America, The Black Woman & Family, and Latino In America.

Oh, and she’s not taking anyone’s bigoted bullshit : ) she tweeted back at a homophobic article published by NewsBusters that claimed it would be “better to die than live in a pro-gay world.” Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Seriously though, don’t miss this legend on campus!!! IT’S FREE
