Yuri on Ice interview translation - PASH! 2017/03 (p10-11)

The second part of the episode commentary by Mitsurou Kubo! I have now fixed it with all the italic & bold parts as in the magazine (in the magazine they are actually bold & bolder). If you have any questions please send me a private message and I’ll reply when I have some time.

You can find the first commentary about episodes 1-6 here.

Just a note: when she quotes lines from the episodes I’m not using any of the “official” English translations, I’m translating them as I would translate them myself, so they might not be like you are used to hear them, but I think you will understand which lines they are anyway.

The translation is under the cut because it’s long.

The episode “Potty Mouth” in a nutshell.

anonymous asked:

if i wanna get into dc as a Gay where should i start pls

Sorry for the late reply!!! Ok here is a list of good LGBT heroes, a short desc, and links to recommended reading!

EDIT: I realized I sourced to someone who ships incest and I want this to be a safe blog without anything like that. Unfortunately for some of the sources I couldn’t find any others or any better. I’ve marked all links to their blog w a *. Stay safe.

Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Bisexual. Selina is a highly skilled thief who is both a hero and a villain, depending on the arc. Selina’s morality is definitely neutral on the scale. She’s not opposed to stealing and hurting bad guys but she has objections to unnecessary cruelty. She’s best known for being one of Batman’s allies & love interests. Her official “coming out” was when she kissed Eiko Hasigawa, the daughter of a Yakuza boss, who teamed up with Selina to bring him down. ( x | x )

Harley Quinn. Bisexual. Harley Quinn’s backstory unfortunately features a lot of the Joker but she’s on to better things now. Psychiatrist turned supervillain, she was brainwashed by the Joker and in a long running relationship with him, where he manipulated and abused her. She has a similar (but obviously, better in every way) clown/jester aesthetic. Currently, she’s in an open relationship with Poison Ivy. Tw for emotional & physical abuse & manipulation for any stories that include her relationship with the Joker. ( x | x | x )

Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy. Unspecified wlw. Pamela was a botanist who was poisoned but they fucked it up big time because she not only survived but can now she’s immune to all poisons, can control plants, and her lips produce poison that she can use to control people. She has had relationships with men but they have consistently been for her own benefit and as a result her sexuality is frequently debated over. ( x | x | x | she also recently got a solo one off you should check out )

*Little note abt the above 3: if you’re not already familiar, they frequently team up and in some arcs they even live together. The three of them are known as the Gotham City Sirens and I’m going to link you some sources for them separately bc if you want gay comics what’s better than the Big Gay Apartment of Crime? ( x )

Joseph Wilson/Jericho. Bisexual. The son of Deathstroke with the ability to possess people. As a child he was kidnapped by a terrorist who was after Deathstroke and after Joseph refused to give them information about his father, the terrorist slit his throat, rendering Joseph mute. Joseph apparently was originally going to be gay but they didn’t want it to be “stereotypical” since he’s sensitive & artistic. There’s also some lame stuff where a man Joseph was dating goes to call him bi and he cuts them off to say he doesn’t like labels…but he still seems pretty cool. ( x * )

John Constantine. Bisexual. John is an occult detective and sorcerer. I’d say he’s more hero than villain but his morality is…gray to say the least. He’s a complete asshole but it can be a very fun read and if you’re interested in something that is more based in demons, witches, & spirits than supervillains then John’s your man. Tw for drugs in a lot of his stories. ( x | x )

Harper Row/Bluebird. Bisexual. New ally to the Batfamily. She’s bisexual and her brother, Cullen, is gay and her brother’s identity is actually part of her start as a vigilante hero. Her brother was being assaulted & attacked by homophobes and Harper tried to defend him. She kept a taser with her and when they were cornered by the group of bullies, she tried to fend them off. When they were overpowered, Batman appeared and saved Harper & Cullen. Both vowed to show their thanks to Bruce – Cullen by getting a tattoo of the bat symbol and Harper by becoming a superhero herself. She has an expertise in electrical engineering. ( x * | x )

Grace Choi. Bisexual. Grace Choi is half human, half Amazon. She’s headstrong and tough and was a member of The Outsiders for a while before it disbanded. In The Outsiders she met Anissa Pierce (listed below) and the two became romantically involved. Unfortunately I’ve seen some people on here call her “heterosexual homoromantic” or some shit but as somebody with some sense…I’ll just tell you she’s bi lmao… ( x * | x )

Anissa Pierce/Thunder. Lesbian. A metahuman with the ability to shoot lightning and control her own density. She promised her superhero dad, Black Lightning, she would go to college before fighting crime so on the night she graduated college she became Thunder. Was also a member of The Outsiders and Grace Choi’s girlfriend. ( x * )

Alysia Yeoh. Bisexual & Transgender. Alysia is the only person on this list who is neither a hero nor a villain. I wish she were a hero but I wanted to include her because finding trans characters who are not made into jokes is incredibly hard and Alysia is not a joke character. She was Barbara Gordon’s roommate and is a bartender/artist/activist. She dated Babs’ brother for a while but is currently married to another woman named Jo. I know she’s in Bombshells but tbh I don’t know the extent of her involvement. ( x * )

Dawnstar. Bisexual. An alien from the futurewith enormous wings that’s skilled in combat. She’s a member of the Legion of Heroes and a bounty hunter. Her best known relationship is with fellow legionnaire Drake Burroughs (Wilfire) who is apparently just sentient energy trapped inside a suit? Tbh I don’t know much about her but she sounds dope…An unnamed female character confirmed that they had a relationship together during a mission in which heroes sought out her help in resurrecting another hero. ( x * )

Kate Kane/Batwoman. Lesbian. Batman’s Jewish lesbian cousin. Honestly if you like Batman you’ll like Kate. They operate similarly and use a lot of the same gadgetry. Kate’s best known relationship was with Renee Montoya (mentioned down below) though I believe she’s currently with Maggie Sawyer. (  x * | x | x )

Renee Montoya/The Question. Lesbian. A detective turned vigilante hero that wears a kind of spooky faceless mask. Was Kate Kane’s girlfriend for a while. Some of her stories include her struggle with alcoholism so watch out if that’s a trigger for you. ( x * | x )

Midnighter. Gay. Gay goth asshole tbh. Midnighter is a superhero with enhanced fighting abilities. Often referred to as basically being like Mean Gay Batman but if you ask me Midnighter is a very cool stand-alone hero. Also he’s 6′5″? That’s not super important but I think about it a lot. Married to Apollo even tho Apollo could not be more of a prep. In some arcs they’ve even adopted a daughter together. ( x * | x * | x )

Apollo. Gay. Sweet prep god? Apollo was kidnapped and subjected to experimentation as a child that resulted in him having superpowers similar to Midnighter’s but more advanced and powerful. Just like Midnighter is considered to be similar to Batman, Apollo is considered to be similar to Superman, but again, they are very, very cool without being compared to anybody else. ( x * | x * )

Jackson Hyde/Aqualad. Gay. Gay black teenager with hydrokinetic powers, best known for his role in the Teen Titans. Aqualad was just made gay recently, in Rebirth, so the reading for him is pretty simple. Just a heads up, his mother doesn’t accept him being gay or his abilities, so any issues with his mom will have homophobia present. (Check out Teen Titans Rebirth!)

Holly Ann Fields/Virtue. Lesbian. Holly has several psychic abilities as well as flight and is the leader of the vigilante group located in Coral City, The Movement. (as far as I know the reading would just be The Movement by Gail Simone, which has unfortunately been cancelled so it’s only 12 issues.)

Miguel Barragan/Bunker. Gay. Miguel is a metahuman from Mexico and was written with the intention of being “angst-free” so his family & village were very accepting of his superpowers and his sexuality. He has the power of creating things out of this weird purple energy. ( x * )

Holly Robinson. Lesbian. Selina Kyle’s best friend & understudy. Holly experienced a lot of abuse as a child and was forced into prostitution. Selina caught a cop assaulting Holly and stepped in and taught Holly how to defend herself. They teamed up and got out of the scene and Selina taught Holly how to fight, as well as her tips for stealth and theft. Holly occasionally stands in as Catwoman. Big tw for child abuse, sexual abuse/assault. ( x * )

Ray Terrill/The Ray. As a child Ray was told he couldn’t be exposed to the sun so he spent most of his life in the dark. However, as his father was dying he told him that he wasn’t his biological father and he lied about his son being allergic to sunlight. His real father was a superhero called Golden Age Ray and Ray in fact gained powers from the sun. His powers allow him to fly, become invisible, create illusions & constructs, turn his entire body into light energy, etc. Ray was confirmed gay before Rebirth, but in Rebirth he is confirmed in canon. ( x * | x )

Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. Bisexual. Diana is an Amazon and as such has…so many powers…She’s very strong. She’s also very good & intelligent and tbh is all around a great hero. You probably know who she is tbh. She was recently confirmed to be bisexual but unfortunately it was out of canon and therefore she doesn’t have any plots that relate to it and it’s not confirmed in canon. ( x )

Yuri on Ice interview translation - PASH! 2017/05 (p24-25)

I am pleased to bring you the very first interview with director Sayo Yamamoto!!! You don’t know how much I’ve been waiting for this… This one is pretty general because of course she has never been interviewed before so they are asking her the basics, but it’s very interesting to finally hear things from her perspective too, since she’s the one who started it all. More interviews with her will be appearing in other magazines in the near future, I’m looking forward to those ones too.

Also, I believe a bright future is to be expected for Yuri on Ice, since she seems to have lots of plans…!! (I was shivering typing out the translation, lol)

Translation is under the cut.

Interview (first appearance in media!)
The world of “Yuri on Ice” that director Yamamoto wanted to create
With 8 notebooks full of notes in one hand, director Sayo Yamamoto has answered our interview for the first time. We have asked her how this new animation that no one had ever seen before was born.

“You think aerobics is not a cool sport? I think you are wrong. It requires amazing discipline - flexibility, fitness, knowledge. And you have to do it with a big smile on your face. Also, I once performed in front of 10,000 screaming women. I tell you something, I’d rather do that than kick a ball around in front of a few men.”

Slyvia Plath, Shakespeare, Tennyson - you've mentioned them in your t-shirt design but I've literally never heard of them being gay?? Could you direct me to some sources?

in the haunting of sylvia plath, a mix of biographical info and lit critique, jacqueline rose explicitly names plath as bisexual. she goes into detail with the bisexual imagery in plath’s poetry (goodreads link)

to keep his bit short and sweet, alfred tennyson was in a romantic relationship with his cambridge friend arthur henry hallam. they spent a lot of time traveling together and tennyson never fully recovered from hallam’s death.

i saved shakespeare for last because i have so many links. i am slightly passionate about this, okay? shakespeare dedicated 126 sonnets to a man, including “[shall i compare thee to a summer’s day?]” and a sonnet in which the narrator laments that the object of his love is a man and not a woman.

there’s a lot of subtextual analysis of shakespeare’s work that you can search for. my personal fave fact is that the word ‘sweet’ was an undisputed indicator of gay desire, so horatio’s ‘my sweet prince’ line? full homo. (check out queer philologies: sex, language, and affect in shakespeare’s time by jeffery masten)

in more general facts, male homosexuality was super widespread during this era, so much so that henry viii enacted the first sodomy laws in england. and one of shakespeare’s closest friends, and the man he considered to be his true intellectual rival, (like, they adored each other and he co-authored three shakespeare plays) was the ostentatious christopher ‘they that love not tobacco and boys are fools, oh by the way did you know that jesus was gay and he and john were doing it’ marlowe

Besides everything that I have going on the side, I want to raise some awareness about a specific person.
I am not usually one for drama but when it concerns friends and mutuals I have VERY STRONG FEELINGS on art theft and reposting! Especially when I can help it!!

There was a post floating around here:
https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard/blog/magearchivist/158820265052

I instantly recognized this as Simika’s wonderful artwork and I was irritated to see it on here. Just because you put a tiny source link does not mean it is okay to repost without permission! Unless permission is explicitly given you should. not. do. it.

So I messaged this person, you can see the conversation I had with them. They seemed…… ok? Very formal, but all that did was sugar-coat their really selfish intentions. I ended up speaking with Simika about this, as you can see from the screenshot below, as they are one of my mutuals…. I got clear instructions to ask them to take it down. So I sent the screenshot. This very “formal and polite” person who “takes art theft very seriously” blocked me shortly afterwards. They did not take the post down.

… What to do? I’m furious. I cannot report artwork that isn’t my own and Simika does not know English. If maybe you can send them an ask asking them to take down the artwork… I do not suggest attacking, that is never acceptable, but there is a lesson here as well….. Just because you source does not make it okay to repost….. Especially when the artist says so.

(sigh
it is such a problem, I am frustrated and unsure what to do at this point.

Yuri on Ice interview translation - CREA 2017/03 (p34-35)

Second part of the YOI interviews featured on CREA. As for the one with Kubo, more than “interviews” they are like “mini articles” that incorporate what the interviewed people said. The interviews are with Kenji Miyamoto (choreographer), Eiji Abiko & Junpei Tatenaka (figure skating animators), Yuuko Sagiri (original costume designer), Keisuke Tominaga (music producer).

Random note: thanks to this magazine I was finally able to know that Sagiri’s name is “Yuuko”. When I translated her interview on Pash I did lots of research but wasn’t able to find out the pronunciation so I used Yuiko because that was what came out searching for the name alone, but now it’s confirmed that it’s Yuuko so as soon as I have time I’ll edit that interview to fix it. I swear all magazines should be obliged to provide the pronunciation of names, because sometimes it’s really hard to find out how the kanji are pronounced when it’s not famous people with Wikipedia pages and such…

By the way, the issue of Pash coming out today (Feb. 10th) has an article I was really looking forward to (the second part of Kubo’s detailed commentary on each episode), so I’ll probably spend the night translating it when I get home from work. Also because I want to post it before the YOI all night event on Saturday (I’m going to the live viewing).

The reality as expressed by 5 people who created “Yuri on Ice”

Reality #2: Choreography x Kenji Miyamoto
“The footage taken with the camcorder was the key to create realistic and powerful anime scenes”

Profile: From Hyogo prefecture. After retiring from competitive ice dance in 2006 he started working as a choreographer and commentator. With director Sayo Yamamoto’s “ENDLESS NIGHT” for the first time he was involved in creating figure skating choreographies for an anime.

The choreographies for all characters’ programs were created by choreographer Kenji Miyamoto. He created them integrating the music with the information he received from director Yamamoto and Kubo regarding the characters and their programs. What was different than usual is that the songs for the FS were 4 minutes long instead of 4:30 minutes.
“In the anime characters need less strokes to speed up, so it’s possible to use less ‘transitions’, the movements connecting different techniques. I cut down on those and made the programs more compact.”
Miyamoto was filmed with 4 fixed cameras and 2 portable camcorders as he danced all the programs, then the footage was edited into a multiframe video based on which the animated figure skating scenes were created.
“I believe that the footage taken with the portable camcorder, that filmed me up close, is what made it possible to create realistic and powerful tournament scenes.”
After watching the finished anime, Miyamoto commented that the characters’ monologues during their performances are realistic.
“When you are performing lots of things are whirling around inside your head. In my case it wasn’t words but still pictures, like photographs. I was happy that they expressed the athletes’ feelings.”

Reality #3: Animation x Junpei Tatenaka & Eiji Abiko
“The performances look realistic thanks to Miyamoto-sensei’s choreographies”

Profile: Animators working for the anime production company MAPPA. Specialized in sports and action scenes. They both created animation for director Sayo Yamamoto’s “ENDLESS NIGHT”.

Animation of the figure skating scenes was created by action specialists Junpei Tatenaka and Eiji Abiko. “It’s the first time that we digitally create 2D pictures after deciding the camerawork. It was very difficult because we had to figure out how to do everything”.
Tatenaka, who was already a fan of figure skating, says: “For the moments I believed to be the ‘highlights’ of a performance I would add 1-2 extra stills. This way, I was able to draw out a little what in the live footage only lasted an instant.” They actually made jumps much higher than they are in real life.
“While being aware that real skaters wouldn’t jump that high, I still wanted the scenes to be striking, therefore I was always looking for a good balance between realism and what could be allowed in animation.” (Abiko)
They both agree that Miyamoto’s choreography footage was the most important factor that allowed them to create realistic performance scenes.
“When there was a key point in the music, Miyamoto-sensei would pose with all of his body creating a beautiful line, from his fingertips to the tips of his toes. It was very easy to draw.” (Tatenaka)

Reality #4: Costumes x Yuuko Sagiri
“I think the only difference is that there were no budget restrictions (LOL)”

Profile: Ballroom dancing costume designer working for the ballet & dance supplies maker Chacott. She has designed figure skating costumes for athletes such as Nobunari Oda and Akiko Suzuki.

Yuuko Sagiri, designer of the athletes’ costumes, created the designs giving importance to functionality that would improve a skater’s performance and to elements that would make the character’s personality stand out, just like she does for real costumes. She chose materials, cuttings and decorations that would actually be employed in costumes used for real performances.
“Normally I objectively watch an athlete’s past performances to understand their level and what kind of movements they are skilled at, and this is then reflected in the design. This time I based the design on the characters’ setting materials, the information I received from the director and the choreography footage by Miyamoto-sensei. I think the only difference is that there were no budget restrictions (LOL).”
Regarding Yuuri’s costume, she mentions that she wanted to reflect the fact that he is psychologically weak and gains weight easily.
“I added shining decorations on his chest so that his face would look bright even when he is tense. The cuts on the waist are to make him look slim.”
Actually, she also designed a costume for Yurio’s exhibition. Sagiri said that she created the design thinking of what “Yurio would really want to wear”. We’d definitely like to see him skate with that costume!

Reality #5: Music x Keisuke Tominaga
“I added melody to the beautiful lyrics that is ‘Yuri on Ice’”

Profile: From Kanagawa prefecture. Music producer. He founded PIANO INC. in 2012 and is the current representative director. His main works include the Pocari Sweat 2016 commercial “Kimi no Yume wa, Boku no Yume.”, the TV anime “Zankyou no Terror”, etc.

When creating the music for this show, music producer Keisuke Tominaga constantly asked himself whether it was music you could dance to.
“I would move my hands, feet, my whole body, sometimes even checking the rhythm like a conductor or a dancer. Figure skating has many elements that resemble ballet, so to express the elegant movements of the body I used many tunes in triple time like waltz and bolero.”
Most of the classical and orchestra tracks were created by Taku Matsushiba, while the vocal tracks and modern band songs by Tarou Umebayashi. They worked on the music as a team, always communicating with each other.
“The world created by Kubo-san and director Yamamoto was like realistic and beautiful ‘lyrics’, and I feel that our role was to create a ‘melody’ for those lyrics. In fact, when I joined together Yuuri’s FS song “Yuri on ICE” and Victor’s recorded voice for the first time, the lines sounded just like the words of a song, and I can’t describe how moved I was. I believe that this strong, deep expression that you would not be able to obtain with music alone is what realistically affects the viewers.”

Bonus in case you haven’t seen it already: Sagiri’s design for Yurio’s exhibition program.

Yuri on Ice interview translation - Animage 2017/01 (p20-23)

I was going to post this last week but gave priority to the BD stuff. This will be the final interview from the booklet that came with January Animage! There’s still an interview with Kenji Miyamoto left untranslated, but it will be taken care of by @whiteboxgems whenever she has time! I’ll reblog it when it’s around.

This is actually 2 interviews, I’m posting them together because they were one after the other and (main reason) because the second one is very short.
A few notes below to better understand the interviews.

The first one is with Yuuichirou Hayashi, the one who created the ending (ED = ending by the way) footage. I have the feeling someone previously posted translations of the captions under the ED screenshots, but I don’t remember where and I’m pretty sure it was just the captions and not the interview parts, so here you have it complete. This one is pretty interesting because he explains in detail how they created the ED, and has some extra information on cut scenes etc. Definitely a must read in my opinion!

The second one is a short interview with Kayoko Ishikawa, the one who did the costume designs. Here you might think: didn’t Chacott design the costumes? I’ll explain. It’s more or less like with Mitsurou Kubo and Tadashi Hiramatsu: Kubo created the original designs for the characters, from scratch, and Hiramatsu transformed them into designs specifically created for animation, therefore with simpler lines, detailed expression sheets and so on. Likewise, Chacott did the original designs for the costumes, from scratch, based on the indications by Yamamoto and Kubo, and then the anime’s costume designer simplified and modified them so that they would be suitable to be animated. (Before actually animating them there’s a further step: the anime’s color designer is going to decide the exact colors, shadows and highlights included, that will be used inside the anime. I translated an interview with the color designer Izumi Hirose some time ago)

I usually don’t add pictures but this time I felt that it would be better to add them as an immediate reference. However, they are just for reference and are not meant to be visually stunning, so please bear with the quality because I just took photos of the magazine with my phone and quickly edited them.

Translation under the cut! (kind of image-heavy)
