Shetlandic has a word, pirr, meaning ‘a light breath of wind, such as will make a cat’s paw on the water’…Yet it is clear that we increasingly make do with an impoverished language for landscape. A place literacy is leaving us.
The village is located in the Walser area of Italian Alps. The Walser is a highest Alemannic language, an old German dialect, also spoken in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Cherbächè is the Walser name of the village.
Sauris is a lingual island: the people there speak a sort of German language, Saurano, that is an archaic sort of Germanic dialect. Anyway they also speak Italian and the Friulian, a language-dialect spoken in the Friuli region, whom Sauris belongs to.
