Too Late (Part 2) [Jay Halstead]

Pairing: Jay Halstead x reader

Everything happened very fast, the subject grabbed Ruzek by the back immobilizing and disarming him in the process.

“The gun on the floor, or the brains flight!” He yelled at me.

I swallowed hard and left the weapon slowly on the floor, kicking it aside, Ruzek was subtly denying me.

“Karlo, you do not want to do this.” He was flashing between Adam and him.

“Shut up! The gun trembled in his hands, he could feel things getting heavier.“ Put your hands up or shoot.

"Karlo, just let my partner go.”

"Back off or I’ll blow your fucking head off, I’m not kidding.” His behavior became more and more nervous.

My gaze centered on Ruzek, I began to retreat slowly as he nodded securely. In only seconds, in a moment of distraction, Adam pushed Karlo in search of his weapon, that was not enough for him to stand again and point at my partner.

“Watch out”

I threw myself at him in an attempt to take the weapon away from him, he would not escape, but he was notoriously stronger than I was.

“Drop the gun or shoot” I heard Ruzek’s voice behind us.

Two shots rang out, followed by another, Adam held the pistol in our direction, Karlo fell near the gun barrel in his hands, dead. The ardor at my side was present, I don’t know at what time I had precipitated to the ground.

“(Y / N), (Y / N)! “ I heard Adam shout.

"Don’t ruin it?” I managed to ask, felt my chest in flames, I couldn’t breathe.

“No, (Y / N), damn it.” His eyes seemed alarmed, i don’t think that was so bad. “My partner is down, I repeat, my partner is down, they have been shot, I request an ambulance!”

“Spoil it,” I murmured, watching as Karlo bled to the floor, his throat starting to sting, I felt drowned. “We need him alive, we need him alive …”

“Hell no,” he repeated, his eyes heavy, he felt a liquid flow through my mouth. “(Y / N) Don’t you dare close your eyes!”

“Just a minute…”

From there i just remembered blurry scenes,i remembered the color of the sirens of the ambulance, people shouting, to Jay’s brother, a rather noisy whistle and then nothing.

————–

My eyesight was hazy, the clarity and the smell of antiseptic made me dizzy a little before i was fully aware.

“Kim? “ I asked, seeing the chestnut with worried eyes on the side of my bed. “Where I am?”
“In the hospital,” She said quietly. “How you feel?”

The past memories hit me like a flash.

“Where’s Karlo? Where’s Adam?” I asked excitedly, i felt my side burn.

“Calm down, you have to lie down” Burgess pushed me back “Adam killed Karlo shot you, we’ve been worried about you.

Kim’s gaze moved backward, I could see the faint figure of Jay with his head in his hands at a safe distance.-

“He hasn’t moved from there since you’re here.” She sighed, “you should talk,” I just nodded.  “I’ll call you in.”

As soon as Burgess had left, a Jay with big dark circles under his eyes.

“Are you crazy?” He cried as he entered the door. “Throw you unarmed to an armed criminal!”

“It’s okay Jay, don’t tell me again.” The tears were already running down my face. “I know, i ruined it, you don’t have to tell me, Karlo is dead and not in jail,  I’m stupid.”

He looked at me for a second and snorted, sat down on the chair beside the stretcher, felt his fingers grasp my hand.

"No, you didn’t ruin it,” he murmured. “You almost died,” he sighed, squeezing my hand between his fingers. “I’ve behaved like a real idiot, I thought it was too late, I almost lost you,” he stammered. “You’re an excellent agent.” His gaze fell on mine. “You didn’t ruin it, you never did.” His lips closed against mine, i felt as if my heart was going to come out of my chest.

A noise was heard causing us to separate, the electrocardiogram began to produce constant sounds showing the beating of my heart.I felt myself blushing.

"Looks like I stopped being an idiot.”

“Of course not,” I said, kissing him back.

“hey, babe”

I need a fix of the first time Erin calls Jay babe. Like how at first it was an accident and she gets all embarrassed to now when she just is flowing it out in front of everyone! Please if you have time!

To be honest, I was thinking two days tops and maybe a few hundred words for this prompt and yet, here we are, six days and 3,320 words later, with the prompt finally filled.

There are five vignettes, that start quick and end the same way, progressing from the first use of the endearment “babe” and ending with a short prose retake of the ending scene of CPD 3x15. The second one is mildly inspired by one of my meta bullets. And apparently I can’t go long without PTSD!Jay, so you’re warned.

(Random: It’s like “Hey, Jude” except not in the slightest.)

Hopefully this meets your expectations well enough, Anon! As always, I covet your guys’ thoughts and opinions.

The third rumble of her belly in ten minutes finally gets Erin’s attention. It’s almost eleven at night, she’s finally getting drowsy, and she’s comfortable, leaning back against her partner with his legs boxing in her own and causing a source of amusement during commercial breaks. Erin, refusing to take the blame for ticklish feet, had offered, quite magnanimously, to go sit at the other end of the couch.

The shell of her ear is still warm from his offended nip.

Needless to say, it’s a very inconvenient time for the munchies.

A quiet breath escapes her. Fine. Jay, engrossed in their late night movie, doesn’t notice for several long moments as she pinches at his hands where he’s laced them together across her stomach.

“Jay, come on, I’m starving,” Erin lets her head back to rest on his shoulder, lower lip jutting in some semblance of a pout that gets him out of the movie a lot faster then digging her nails into his skin.

His gaze drops straight down a couple of inches and yes, she definitely has his attention now. “What did you say?”

Leaning in a fraction, just to tease him with the proximity, Erin smirks. “Let me up, I’m hungry.”

Jay blinks a couple of times before his brain cells reconnect and he casts her a flat, unamused look at her underhanded tactics. His grip does loosen though and Erin extricates herself with care, unable to help from grinning but not wanting to add injury to insult by elbowing him in the gut.

If there’s an extra swing to her hips as she walks away, well—Jay doesn’t call her on it.

Erin Lindsay x I’m fine.

A Valentine’s drabble for you all. Romantic dinner, late night stake-out. There isn’t a difference, right?

“You know, I think he planned this,” Jay remarked after a lengthy silence during which Erin scarfed down her half of the pad thai takeout—despite the fact that it had gone stone-cold long ago.

Quirking a brow at him in question, Erin waited for her partner to expound on his aimless thought while she chewed, knowing he would, given enough time.

“Voight. I think he actually paid someone to get in contact with one of our most wanted, just so we would have to put a twenty-four-hour watch on him and work through the weekend.” The smile pulling at the corner of his mouth betrayed his attempt at seriousness, but the fact that he’d started this line of conversation at all meant something was on his mind.

“Why, you have plans?” Erin questioned, humor of her own rising as she shifted around to watch Jay’s expression. She was quite aware of the date and had figured her spontaneous planner of a partner would have something up his sleeve.

Getting him to admit what they were, however—

Jay afforded her a glance out of the corner of his eye but didn’t lower the binoculars in his hand. His tone was conversational when he continued, “I’ll have you know that I got reservations for us at Coco Pazzo tonight, but it would seem that someone’s dad isn’t a fan of the occasion. Which is a pity, because I even got a nice suit out.”

Warmth washed through Erin, surprising in its intensity. She was expecting him to come out with burgers and a movie, at best, not an upscale restaurant deserving of formal dress. It was a challenge to hide just how pleased she was, even over cancelled plans. “Coco Pazzo? Really?”

“Yeah,” Jay’s voice had quieted but his smile was easy. He reached for the camera to snap a few shots, the shutter clicking a half-dozen times. “You deserved a night out to dress up and not be a cop for a few hours. Just my girl.”

Erin leaned across the 300’s partition to prop her chin on his shoulder with a subdued hum. “It would’ve been a really nice evening, Jay. I’m sorry it didn’t work out.”

Affection warmed his gaze as Jay freed a hand to brush a touch along her cheek, fingertips rough against her skin for an achingly short moment before he refocused on the night club they were watching. Erin could feel his vague but simmering frustration with the situation.

Jay caught her momentary grimace and offered a consolatory smile. “On the bright side, we get an all expenses paid evening to ourselves, complete with dinner and a show.”

Snorting, Erin pulled away to relieve the twinge in her back at the weird angle and settled into the passenger’s seat again, rooting around through the space at her feet for Jay’s leftover fried rice. “Saving to eat later” and leftover were basically the same thing, right? “The least Hank could’ve done was send us inside to scope the place out. At least then I could’ve had your hands on me and still gotten paid for it.”

His groan was telling and the binoculars dropped by a couple of inches as he shot her an unamused look.  “Come on, really? It’s hard enough to focus already.”

Erin grinned, knowing it was unfair but not quite caring—it was nice to be remind them both that she could get under his skin. “What? I thought you’d appreciate the thought.”

“Perhaps too much, considering the setting,” Jay grumbled, handing her the camera. “Do your job and maybe tonight will be over a little bit quicker.”

Accepting the photographing equipment, Erin lifted it to her eye to adjust the lens to the new angle, but couldn’t help the amusement still playing on her lips.

A companionable silence settled between them and Erin let it linger, content to just be in the same space. After the last few weeks, dealing with Yates, the emotional toll that had taken, it was a relief to feel normal again. She wasn’t sure when normal had become time with Jay, either on or off the job, but she wasn’t going to complain.

Their shift lasted until five AM, when Ruzek and Alvin showed up in a beater car to replace them. Jay meandered over to them to give them an update on who they’d seen through the night while Erin maneuvered across the partition to reset the 300 so she could drive.

It was another two hours before Erin trudged up the stairs to her apartment building, Jay pacing along at her side with his thumb hooked through the back belt hole of her jeans. Normally, she would poke him in the side until he let go, but considering she couldn’t quite see straight, the presence of his hand at the base of her spine was helping her walk in a straight line.

Erin leaned against Jay in the elevator, her front pressed to his as she sought the proximity that they’d been denied earlier. A hum of approval left her when he looped his arms around her in return, the scruff along the line of his jaw scratching at her temple in a way that she loved.

“Six hours of sleep and then you’re mine,” Jay murmured into her hair, voice pitched lower than normal, deep with promise.

Pleasure warmed her, settling low in her chest. Tilting her head back, Erin smiled at him, hands finding their way under his shirt to the heat of his skin and settling there. “I’d like that.”
