Introduction: Hi! I’m Annie, I recently graduated as valedictorian of a class of almost 700, and I’m about to be a freshman at Johns Hopkins (go blue jays!!). High school was some of the best and worst moments of my life, and looking back, there are so many things that I wish I’d done and things that made me successful, so I wanted to share them! Of course, disclaimer, these tips may not apply to everyone!

(These tips generally apply to all classes, but if you have a specific subject you want tips on, I’ve taken these AP courses: european history, world history, us gov’t, macroeconomics, lang, lit, calc ab, chemistry, physics 1, physics c, environmental science, art: drawing, biology, human geography, chinese, and art history. Feel free to message me!)

College applications are a crapshoot- I can’t begin to tell you the number of incredible, brilliant people with extraordinary, international level achievements that got denied at top schools in favor of those lacking those accomplishments. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean those who got in don’t have qualities that earned them a spot, it just speaks to the unpredictable nature of the college application process. When deans of admission at top schools openly say they could reject all admitted students and build the same exemplary class from the waitlist, or that they have enough qualified applicants to fill 3 or 4 classes with, there’s a certain amount of luck involved. Therefore I urge all rising seniors to go into this process realizing that the odds are not in your favor. I went into the process with too much blind hope, too confident in my ability to be that lucky 1 in 10 (or less) that would gain admission, and I was sorely disappointed. So that leads me to my next tip…

Don’t do things just for your college application- Those slim acceptance rates are the exact reason I urge you not to join things solely for how good they look on a college application. It seems counterintuitive; wouldn’t they give you a better chance of acceptance? However, my point is not to dissuade you from extracurriculars, but rather to commit to ones that genuinely make you happy. As I wrote above, the process is so competitive that even international achievements may mean rejection, so don’t waste your high school experience by dedicating so much time and effort to something that you feel obligated to do.

Try everything your freshman and sophomore year- My biggest regret is not joining clubs where my passions lie simply because I was too lazy or scared of things like public speaking my freshman year. It’s much more intimidating to join as upperclassmen, and you may not be able to participate at all the levels/in all the ways people who have dedicated 3-4 years can. Even if you don’t think its for you (like debate for me because of my fear of public speaking), I urge you to expand your horizons and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Many clubs give you great opportunities to build leadership, public speaking, etc. skills and to find your passions.

Know both sides of the flashcard- I learned this tip from my organic chemistry class, and I’d never though about how useful it is. For example, if you’re memorizing polyatomic ions, it’s extremely important that you know both the formula and the name, as either version may show up on the exam. Not doing this also makes the weaknesses in your memorization evident- whenever I study vocab, I tend to glance at the side with the term and only memorize the definition. This meant that when I was given only the definitions, I couldn’t remember the word they defined, because I was so used to being given the vocab word and responding with the definition. 

The first lecture of the unit is one of the most important for STEM classes- I know the beginning of the unit can often seem like the perfect time to tune out, as it goes over information you’ve previously learned or the easiest material of the topic, but it often forms the foundation for everything else in the unit. For example, the first lecture on a stoichiometry unit will probably teach you dimensional analysis, a skill integral to calculating molecular or empirical formulas, moles or grams of a substance, etc. 

Buy/sell books secondhand- Everyone knows how expensive college textbooks are, but between SAT and AP prep books, and books for English, high school books can cost quite a bit of money too. Unless they redesigned the exam recently, you absolutely don’t need the newest edition of the review book, so buy from upperclassmen and then sell it to underclassmen the following year.

Learn to self study- Unless you’re really lucky, you’re guaranteed to have a teacher who doesn’t teach, teaches badly, or whose teaching style just doesn’t work for you. Personally, I find that self learning, especially if I’m struggling because resources such as textbooks and online explanations, and videos seem to contradict, really helps me understand the topic throughly. In AP bio, my teacher had us create claymation videos on the processes of cellular respiration and photosynthesis independently. It was incredibly frustrating and confusing because all the resources described the cycles in varying degrees of details, but I felt like I genuinely understood the topic, instead of having been spoon-fed the information and memorizing it. Obviously, this method isn’t very efficient for frequent use, but the key is to try to understand the material independently instead of going to the teacher the moment you hit a snag. 

Keep your backpack/binders/notebooks reasonably organized- When teachers ask for homework to be passed up and you have to dig through mountains of papers in your backpack, not only is that super stressful, but a lot of teachers won’t let you turn it in after they have already collected all the papers. I was definitely guilty of being lazy and just stuffing papers, once I got them, into my backpack instead of taking a few seconds to slide them into a binder, and as a result I got 0s on lots of homework because either I couldn’t find it at the time or because everything was so messy I didn’t remember there was homework. Try to have some sort of organization system going on or at least a homework folder, because those 0s add up and can be the difference between an 89 and 90. 

You’re gonna get senioritis, badly, and that’s ok- I’ve always been the type of person who did every homework assignment and was very focused on grades, so the idea that I would completely let myself ago seemed absurd to me. Don’t underestimate what senior year does to you. I can honestly count on one hand the econ worksheets that I actually turned in during senior year, and I made my first B in a grading period during the spring. I was very stressed about how awful my grades were, but unable to muster the energy to do anything about it. And you know what, it’s ok. It’s senior year, you can give yourself a break. Yes, your senior grades are still important for college applications, so don’t go from straight A’s to straight C’s, but for the most part, all the hard work is behind you. Do keep in mind that these habits may haunt you when you’re a college freshman. I haven’t started classes yet, but based on how little I studied for the math placement exam for my college, senioitis doesn’t magically end when you graduate, so don’t let it get completely out of control during the year. 

Learn how to do math without a calculator- If you take either of the AP Calculuses or the SAT, you need to master this skill because there are sections of the exams that are strictly non-calculator.  Beyond that, when you get to calculus, you’ll be introduced to complicated concepts, where not being able to multiply by hand will drag you down. 

Keep old notes- Not only for finals, but some topics are very interdisciplinary, like biochemistry, so it’s very important that you have a working knowledge of both biology and chemistry. As you take advanced classes, such as for me, taking physics c after physics 1, it will be assumed that you have completely mastered the basics, and they will be skipped or referenced very quickly. It is very useful to look at notes on the basics, which provide the foundation for the advanced material you learn. 

Invest in a whiteboard- Whenever I was learning about processes or cycles, from the Krebs cycle to organic chemistry mechanisms, it was really useful to practice drawing the steps over and over again. Then when it came to the test, I could do a brain dump and draw out the information as a reference. 

Understand formulas instead of blindly memorizing- This basically has physics and calculus written all over it. In physics, you should be given formula charts during exams, and in any case, something like F=ma isn’t terribly hard to memorize. The problem comes when there are a multitude of formulas that are derived from one of the fundamental equations. Of course, deriving from scratch each time is incredibly tedious, but I want to dissuade you from simply memorizing it or storing it on your calculator, because that means you probably don’t understand the physics behind it. What makes physics so difficult and different from any other subject you’ve taken is that every problem will have a slightly different scenario that tests your understanding of the physics behind it. 

Use all the time given to you during tests- I know I hate looking back through my test because I just get so bored halfway through, but missing points because of silly mistakes is honestly the most frustrating thing ever when you had plenty of time to check. Depending on if I have time, I like to cover my original work and resolve the question. If checking answers is not your thing, try slowing now when you first see each question, and checking your work briefly each step. 

Form study groups- Talking about something, especially teaching it to someone, always helped me remember something so much better than reading it on paper. It’s also so important to have second interpretations of the information you’re studying to ensure that you don’t make a huge misconception.  

AP students: released/practice exams are your best friend- Obviously, they’re the best resources for studying for the AP exam, but they’re also a great tool for a hint at what your teacher’s tests may look like. AP teachers have access to tons of College Board material and will often use questions directly from old exams. 

If you start getting confused during a lecture- Many times this is because I didn’t pay attention during the very beginning, so I’m missing that important foundation I talked about in the previous tip. Of course, I typically wouldn’t recommend doing things other than listening to what is currently being taught, but in this case, I would just get more confused and it’s a waste of time. So I discretely go back to my previous notes and focus on understanding them. 

The most stressful part of schoolwork is just thinking about your assignments- There’s always specific period of time that threatens to kill me- a week where I had two competitions simultaneously, in cities 3 hours apart. When you’re taking 7 AP classes at the same time, just reading over your to-do list will make you want to cry. Even on a normal day, as I go to classes throughout the day and my list of homework gets longer and longer, it makes me so stressed to where I’m planning out how to finish everything and I’m no longer listening in class. It overwhelmed me so much that I just wanted to take a nap and avoid school. But every single time, stressing about the work I have is 1000x worse than sitting down and actually going through each task. I find that what had seemed impossible before was very doable, and many times I even finished early enough to relax before bed. Keep a positive mindset, don’t underestimate your abilities, and have the discipline to start working immediately on the hardest days, and you’ll be fine. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the workload that is able to be handled by one person can work for another, and things like mental illnesses are things I have no experience in, so this is definitely just something that worked for me and is not applicable to everyone.

And while the McCall pack and the entire Hale pack (Talia, Laura, etc.) are on civilized terms, Scott and Derek just can’t help themselves. And maybe a part of the showing off is actually a way to impress (court) Stiles, as in “My lawn ornaments are much nicer than his!”

So this is kind of that, but kind of not? This is pretty silly :) Happy Halloween!


“You’re not dead,” Stiles says as Scott bangs open the door and shucks off his shoes in the next movement. They hit the wall and then bounce into an ungainly pile in the middle of the hallway that Liam will no doubt trip over when he gets home.

“Nope,” Scott says. He looks confused by that part.

“So… That’s good?” Stiles has pumpkin guts all over his hands, but offers Scott a fist bump anyway.

Scott follows Stiles back into the kitchen and then plops down across from Stiles’s half-finished jack-o-lanterns at the counter. He’s a couple weeks early, but Halloween has to be taken seriously. These are practice pumpkins.

Scott says, “It was weird. I think they’re all models. They force-fed me pie.”

Stiles arches a skeptical eyebrow.

“I mean, the pie was great,” Scott says, face screwed up. “I think they were happy I ate the whole thing?”

Werewolf metabolism, Stiles thinks sourly. He’s getting to that age where he has to watch his beer and pizza intake. It sucks. He says, “I’ll make them brownies,” and then apparently it becomes a thing.

Stiles doesn’t know if the Hale pack are actually all models, but they’re definitely taking the supernaturally hot thing to a whole other level.

Scott’s betas are reasonably attractive, sure, but Liam’s the size of a cave troll and Mason’s on this whole hippie-chic kick that makes him look like a train hobo.

Stiles holds out the plate of brownies and tries not to stare at Erica’s boobs. Boyd has the bulging chest of a roman gladiator and Stiles could cut his hands on Isaac’s cheekbones, it’s insane.

Stiles says, “Nice to meet you guys,” and Erica’s lip curls up and her hands hover around the plastic-wrapped plate like it’s made of poison and-or possibly oatmeal. He waggles the plate back and forth. “Promise they’re wolfsbane free.”

And then Jackson fucking Whittmore comes swanning down the staircase and Stiles says, “You’ve got to be shitting me. Jackson?”

“Stilinski,” Jackson says with a scowl.

“Lydia told us you got eaten by a giant lizard.”

Jackson scowls harder. “Fuck off.”

Stiles would like to say that the addition of Jackson makes the pack less appealing, but despite having the personality of a canned ham, Jackson still looks like he was carved out of marble. Balls.

And then someone says, “Do I smell chocolate?” from behind Stiles and he definitely does not jump three feet into the air, but it’s a close call.

He flinches and spins around and says, “Fuck my life.”

The hottest mountain man Stiles has ever seen is frowning at him and Stiles wants to bury his entire body in his beard. He wants to weasel his way under that soft-looking Henley and lick his collarbones. Stiles is ninety-nine percent sure this is Alpha Derek Hale, even though Scott had failed to prepare him for the way Derek’s eyes are eating Stiles’s soul.

Stiles wordlessly holds out the plate of brownies.

Derek takes them with a resigned silence. No one else is saying anything either, and the back of Stiles’s neck is starting to prickle with unease. Are they going to eat him now? They’d moved into town so Liam and Mason could go to the local college, expecting some kind of resistance, territorial posturing, possible brawl for dominance, but Scott had been tirelessly optimistic—even more so since the pie eating thing.

Stiles slinks around Derek, hands up. He says, “I’ll just, uh… leave now,” and backs down the sidewalk so he can see any kind of attack coming. He’s got a taser in his back pocket and he’s not afraid to use it.

The Hale pack all watch him with narrow, calculating eyes and Jackson gives him the finger.

Stiles thinks that if this is the way they react to brownies, he’s going to bake them a motherfucking cake.

Summary: It’s 1993 and the summer from many years ago is dead and gone. Many have drifted apart from the Losers club and its at the point where there is no club at all. The atmosphere is cold just like the winter months and the only blushes to be found are the ones that are caused from the piercing spikes of cold that heat skin up. Being a teenage boy is hard; especially for the two boys that now count each other as strangers. In which both boys make a plan, but both disrupt each others.

Both Richie and Eddie drove for what seemed like hours, both of their hands intertwined as they drove along the snow road- miles away from Derry, safe and sound. Both windows were down to let the cold breeze flow through and prick at their goosebumps. A small smile lingered upon Eddie’s small lips as he stared out at the small dots of snow lacing through the iced air.

Richie had one hand settled on the smooth leather of the wheel, the other next to him with his pinky finger intertwined with Eddie’s own pinky finger. Richie’s gaze striking at the road before him; his anxiety flaring due to how slippery the road was due to black ice.

Langst i thought about late at night im sorry

ok so i don’t have a lot of evidence on this considering i don’t have screenshots and i really need to binge voltron again but im making this off of pure memory so hear me out ok? im porbably looking way too deep into this lmao

I think Lance feeling like he’s a seventh wheel is completely justified. 

Alright so everyone has had that moment where you make a joke and everybody just stay silent like it isnt funny, right? Well if you think about it, Lance has those moments every time he makes a joke or tries to lighten the mood, all of the time. Nobody really laughs at his comments or even pays much attention to them in the first place, only gets glares in return.

Now clearly, Lance usually cracks a joke for comic relief, but apparently no one else finds it funny. For example, he comes out of the pod after healing and everyone is happy to see him.  But as soon as he starts talking, people just groan and act like, “Oh, it’s that Lance, he hasn’t changed one bit,” and act clearly annoyed. Even his idol, Shiro, acts fed up with his shit- which in some cases is justified, but most times, it shouldnt matter, he’s just trying to be funny lmao.  Lance probably feels, unwanted, out of place, like he is the fifth wheel because no one really accepts him, and everyone finds him annoying.

Its not even just with Lance’s sense of humor, too.

People always think his ideas are stupid.

For example, the iconic scene where he keeps Keith from running straight into the danger that could get both of them killed, he suggests his alternate idea. Keith- who usually thinks Lance’s ideas are dumb, automatically jumps to the conclusion that his idea is going to be. Before he can argue, though, he works it out and sees that maybe Lance’s alternate route is a good idea. 

People disagree with the way he wants to complete something, in season 2, Lance comes up with the idea to form Voltron in a situation and everyone vouches against it, however 30 seconds later, they end up forming Voltron, like he said, anyway. 

Another reason, people also think little of him, they underestimate him, and that all starts with the Garisson. He was told that the only reason he ever got at his fighter pilot class was because his rival was kicked out of school, and without that he shouldnt have even been there. Again, he feels out of place, and like he doesnt belong. Then, his idol, his hero, Shiro, shows up, and when he finally feels like he has a purpose, like he could accomplish something amazing, but then Keith shows up. Even then, he doesnt give up, he is like “um excUSE ME BITCH I CALLED SAVING SHIRO FIRST” And once again, he doesnt want his rival that always beat him to do that once again. 

And again in season two, there’s clearly favoritism happening between Keith and Shiro, and Lance is jealous of course. Like, he finally gets to meet and work with his idol, and when he wants to go with Shiro on a mission, SHiro chooses Keith over him. Man, I wonder why he’s so overdramatic about it. Its not like he was treated the same damn way at the gaRISSON OR ANYTHING NAHH

No, but clearly, he has an inferiority complex, especially when it comes to keith, because he knows hes better than him in every way.

People in the show also deny that he has any good skills, and even he himself starts to believe it, when sorta venting to the yupper. (i die a little inside whenever i see it)

I loved it when shiro gave him praise for once because it was specifically for him and not directed at the whole time. It was good job LANCE

And honestly the pride on his face was so heartwarming like omg thank you shiro for ackowledging him

I hope in season 3 they kinda bring his insecurities up again as a sort of conflict i mean- with Keith possibly becoming Black Paladin, Lance is probably gonna be hella jealous and im sure thats gonna instigate a fight between them, and now theres not really a mediator. So. Fantastic…..

Guys i feel like a lot fo stuff goes right back to shiro, how lance probably aspires to be like him, or be good in his eyes and therefore be good for the rest of the team but hes having this inferiority complex because he feels unappreciated. Like hes just that annoying guy they dont really need and they could replace him if they wanted to, and keeping all of those thoughts hidden or masked by this confident facade is like

lance youre gonna break at some point 

I hope lance gets the recognition and the acknowledgement he deserves in season 3 i swear he better not be tossed under the rug.

Atomic Blonde (and why I’m a Sapphic who adored it)

Okay, first off…WOW! What a ride that film was! After having a full 24hrs  to really digest this film, I can honestly say that this film really blew my  expectations, in so many different ways. Since there seems to be so much  discourse over this film, I thought I would post a POSITIVE list of all the  reasons why this film is as important and special to me as it is, even with  That Scene. As Lorraine Broughton would say, “ Shall We?”

Okay first off, the obvious…

  • AESTHETIC MUCH!?
  • 80′s soundtrack with phenomenal remixes.
  • NEON FOR DAYS!!
  • Charlize Theron, playing a truly Bad-Ass Bisexual MI6 Agent while still looking sexy as Hell!
  • The action was some of the best I have ever witnessed!
  • The general setting of this film, Communist Berlin, gives a remarkable window into just what the Cold War in its later stages entailed. The Cold War was perhaps one of the most deceitful wars in history, and when you figure in just how sensitive the situation was, you realize that Every. Move. Counts.

Lorraine Broughton

  • She owns my ass.
  • Again, we have an Openly-Bisexual Female Lead, who’s only main love interest is another woman!
  • Charlize Theron not only did 98% of all her own stunts, but she sustained injuries because of it.
  • I loved her characterization, it was one of the highlights of this film. We often forget that movies like this are hardly ever realistic, but in this film the opening scene is of Lorraine, MI6′s Top Agent, wearily trying to attend to her beaten body. She is barely alive, and as the film goes on we see just how much of a toll her physical and emotional well-being takes due to the nature of her job. As the film progresses we see her grow more cold and disconnected to the point where she is practically numb to those around her (her interrogation, mostly).
  • She wins all her fights, but not without repercussions. Her body takes. A. Beating. And unlike most films her wounds don’t just magically disappear or just “get better”. No, they are there for weeks, in all their ugliness, to display just how vulnerable as a person she is, whilst also reminding those who see her how tough and strong she has to be just to merely survive.

Lorraine and Delphine

  • Okay, first off…OMG THESE TWO!
  • Sofia Boutella was adorable as Delphine, and the way her innocence and naive-ness abolutely melted Lorraine was so cute!
  • The way Lorraine looked at Delphine with such intrigue, and the way Delphine looked at Lorraine with such awe.
  • The whole “Harold, they’re Lesbians”-like scenario with the dude at the bar (even tho Lorraine is Bi).
  • Again, we get another glimpse into Lorraine’s characterization here, which is basically she gets distracted by pretty girls we see that, even though Lorraine is still skeptical of Delphine at first, she very easily falls for her, a softness that we up until that point had yet to see in her.
  • Delphine’s slight hesitance when she gives Lorraine that adorably soft kiss and Lorraine’s shyness in returning it!
  • The way we see Lorraine follow Delphine into a more private place and being so dazed and transfixed by this tiny French Girl is mesmerizing and makes my heart skip a beat!
  • OMG their wicked make-out session and the slamming against the wall and the WHOLE SCENE THAT FOLLOWS I COULD NOT BREATH!
  • “…So you made contact with the French Operative?” “Obviously”
  • Lorraine in nothing but a sweater looking over Delphine as she sleeps-watching, wondering, worrying about what will happen to her.
  • THEY GOT TOGETHER MORE THAN ONCE!
  • AFTER-SEX SNUGGLES!
  • Honestly, them snuggling was one of the most tender moments in the whole film. For once it feels as though Lorraine is being genuine with Delphine, which she picks up on.
  • Lorraine stroking Delphine’s hair while Delphine nudges her head in Lorraine’s neck is so precious. The way Lorraine is so gentle with her and laughs and smiles at her makes my heart melt so much! She cares so much for this one woman she just met and it is so beautiful!
  • Tiny Soft Nose Kisses!
  • The fact their relationship, no matter how brief, is actually a small subplot means so much because it really feels like this was for us Sapphics, despite what happens later.

That Scene among other things

  • Oh boy, here we go. In my opinion, I did not see this as partaking in the horrid “Kill Your Gays” trope.
  • We saw it coming in the trailer you guys, and I was fully prepared for this scenario.
  • She was a naive, inexperienced spy who got too close to Lorraine, and suffered the ultimate price for it. This happened to all of Lorraine’s lovers (although I honestly think she was just using her first one for information, where as she truly cared for Delphine).
  • Delphine Fought. Back. Hard! And she did a damn good job at keeping up. But unfortunately she did not have the skill nor the experience to win that battle. She is not Lorraine, who barely came out the mission alive!
  • This is a spy film about the Cold War, there were going to be many, many casualties. Lorraine (Another Queer) was the only one to make it out alive.
  • When Lorraine found Delphine, I truly felt for her then. This is the first time we see her fully shut down as she Empathetically mourns her girlfriend (which we hardly get to see in general, the LGBT Hero mourning the death of their lover).
  • At this point, after all that she has gone through (the beatings, the betrayals, the loss of intelligence, etc) this is the one thing that finally breaks her, and LORRAINE. IS. FUCKING. DONE.
  • She is done with everything around her, and we see this as she goes from on-the-ground vulnerable to STONE. COLD. NOTHING. And she goes out for blood, and Damn-It does she get it! She shows no mercy for Delphine’s killer, and it is obvious that this is revenge in its most raw form.
  • In the end this is a story about a spy in the Cold War, and in a genre like this things are going to be very brutal. We see this brutality play out on Lorraine, and how it affects her and all of those involved. She made it out with her life, and that was her reward. 
  • So Delphine’s death, to me, was the final Plot Point to move us into the final act, as it was portrayed as the one act of Evil that Crossed That Line, and to further the Characterization of Lorraine.
  • I could go one about the phenomenal action sequences, because I have never witnessed such raw and realistic fighting in an action movie, and to have a Female Bisexual as the lead taking as much as she dishes out was both horrifying yet empowering!

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if you think this film will seriously trigger you, then by all means please take care of your well-being, because that is ultimately the most important thing.

Was I sad that Delphine died? Yes, of course! Did I see it as strictly because she was gay? No, I did not. Do I see this as good representation? Ultimately, yes because I still felt incredibly valid as a Bisexual in more ways than one with this film, and the last time I felt this good about myself was when I first saw Carol (2015) dir. Todd Haynes in theaters (which nothing will ever top that film).

But for everyone else, please GO SEE THIS FILM. For the one negative we must also see all it’s Astonishing Positives this film has, and for it to get the attention and praise that it has is such a big deal for all of us, because if we show our support for this truly Rare Gem then they will make a sequel, and other films like it! Only then can we move forward!

UPDATE: So I just saw Atomic Blonde today for the second time in one week, and upon my second viewing I’ve come to realize just how much I love this film, and why it beat out my expectations originally! And it mainly falls back to what I discussed earlier, about Lorraine and Delphine’s romance and Lorraine herself, for instance:

  • Again, I love Lorraine’s characterization! Being more aware of the story my second time-round, I got to focus more on Lorraine herself, and I think I underestimated just how cold and numb and positively DONE she is by the “end” of her mission (again, in reference to her interrogation).
  • The physical and emotional toll on her and her body really is just as prominent as I remember, and my goodness I cannot recall another film where I actually left the theatre physically exhausted by what I just watched. Everything she’s endured sort of rubs off on you, and if that isn’t the most engrossing experience a character can portray, than I do not know what is.
  • Delphine and Lorraine, my god I love their relationship! It is the only relationship in the whole film solely built on attraction and Mutual Trust, so much so where they would rather protect each other over their mission.
  • In fact, going in this movie the first time all I was expecting between them was the “One Night Stand” that was so heavily portrayed in the trailers-which I would of been happy with-and, (just like in the trailers) I prepared myself for Delphine’s demise soon after-But we had an entire subplot dedicated to their relationship, right up to the very end!
  • Because of this Lorraine’s and Delphine’s romance felt genuine, filled with love and tenderness and worry and drive to protect each other-and that really is beautiful representation.
  • Which, I believe, is why Lorraine truly shuts down when it all goes south, and why we see the Lorraine we do in her interrogation. SHE IS COLD. SHE IS BEATEN. AND SHE IS TIRED.
  • In the end, I do think she cared more for Delphine than past lovers, which is why she seems so utterly broken when we first see her. She went back to Delphine even after her superiors threatened to end her, and she lied about Delphine to protect her from them, even though she was gone.

Anyway, as you can see this film really did a number on me, and I am absolutely fine with that! I apologize for making my crazy long post even longer, but there were things I still wanted to get off my chest, because this really is a Dream Film-a Queer, Female Lead 80′s Spy Film actually exists, and I think Atomic Blonde really hit it out of the park-and has ruined all other action films for me here-on out!

One of my first jobs out of college wasn’t really a true job. I interviewed at a proprietary trading firm and was offered a job as one of their traders. Looking back, it was naive to join such a firm and this was right before the ‘08 crash. They sold themselves as being pro traders and all you had to do was put up some capital which got added to the group’s pooled fund. After that, you went through training and once the boss thought you were ready, you would 'go live’ with your trading account. There were no paychecks, but you did get to keep most of your profits. Later on, I learned that the bosses of such groups made money by either taking a cut from your profits or by taking a fee from your traded volume. This group skimmed from both sides taking 15% from your profits and a fee from your trading volume which came out to about $1.5 every 100 shares traded.

For months, I spent time learning from the “Pros,” and then I began to realize along with some of the other newbies, that the only person making money was the boss. The turnover for new traders was high. Some people lasted a month, others a year or two. As I got to know people around the office, I began finding out that very few made any money at all. The boss was a micromanager and watched the risk monitor for his group like a hawk. If you hit -$50 in a day, you were locked out and couldn’t trade anymore throughout the day. Also, you were limited to trading stocks up to $40 per share with a max size of 200 shares. It was very difficult to make a living trading like this.

Sorting Sense8

For those who are new to the sortinghatchats system, our basics post is here. But to sum it up: the way we play this game, your “primary” house is WHY you do things and your “secondary” house is HOW.

We just really like defining our terms, okay. It makes us happy. 

Lito is probably the easiest of the lot to sort– a Slytherin Primary and Slytherin Secondary who uses both these aspects of himself to survive, thrive, and find joy. As a Slytherin Primary, his first priorities are himself and the people he loves– a short list that tentatively grows over the course of the series. Lito’s journey is, among other things, the story of a young Slytherin coming into his own as a responsible agent. Lito wants things, selfishly and emotionally– he loves in the same way.

It is not Dani or the horror of her situation that drive Lito to make his decisions at the end of season one, but Hernando’s leaving. Dani’s situation threw Lito into angst and chaos, but he stood by his priorities– his career, his privacy, and his comfortable life. Hernando, both braver and then fonder of Dani than Lito, was the catalyst that pushes Lito to overthrow his entire world to be brave.

(By season two, however, Dani is solidly in Lito’s deepest circles of loyalty. She’s family, then, and if the plot of season one repeated somehow, it would go rather different.)

Lito’s Slytherin secondary is also fairly obvious, as he’s the sensate called on whenever someone needs a lie, a distraction, or a bit of help with overdramatics. His acting is not just a job and a skill, but something  he finds deep joy, validation, and power in. It’s an important part of his personality– his ability to shift, perform, and transform.

Hernando, Lito’s boyfriend, is a Ravenclaw Primary, a contrast which causes both conflict and growth in their relationship. Deliberate, confident, kind, and cerebral, Hernando provides both practical ballast and a call to bravery for Lito– in turn, Lito’s passion, ambition, and flexibility make Hernando’s life a better, brighter place. But when it came down to a choice between staying with the man he loved, or refusing to be complicit, however indirectly, in terrible things, Hernando chose to walk away– and Lito, bless his heart, chose to follow.

(I would also acquiesce rather quickly to claims that Hernando is actually just a very “smart-flavored” Gryffindor).

Hernando loves Lito’s playful Slytherin Secondary, though his is a little quieter– a Hufflepuff Secondary. He loves Lito by waiting for him, by showing up and being present and waiting for him to be brave. He eventually acts as catalyst to change his and Lito’s world not by convincing, persuading, discussing, or charging at the issue but by simply walking away. Hufflepuff secondaries are often overlooked but often form the backbone or bedrock of whatever communities or efforts they support. By leaving, Hernando yanks the rug out from under Lito’s feet and forces him to learn how to stand.

Look also at how he pulls off the scene when his asshole student projects the pictures of him and Lito. He takes in the attack, and then with a patient confidence uses all his knowledge and skill as an academic and a lecturer to reclaim and transform the moment. He turns something meant to shame him into a moment of pride and beauty, while calmly forcing the attacker to shrink in shame of his own making. In spaces that Hernando has embodied and built– his home and relationship, his classroom– he can wield an immense and debilitating power, underestimated by those who expect strength to be something more straightforward and aggressive.

Dani is a Slytherin Primary as well, though I dither about her secondary– either Hufflepuff or Slytherin. Whichever one she doesn’t have, she occasionally pretends she does. I think she’s a Hufflepuff secondary (look at how she gets Lito the interview in Hollywood), but with a convincing veneer of Slytherin. She’s the “well I know a guy” version of the Hufflepuff secondary– at her happiest she is thriving and succeeding using the connections and knowhow she’s gathered, all in the service of people she loves.

Wolfgang is another Slytherin Primary– unlike Lito, who had to recalibrate to lift Hernando’s needs (and Dani’s) above his own ambitions, Wolfy is more likely to need to remember to value his own needs and wants. In some ways, he’s got a parallel arc with Kala, there, as she too goes on a journey to accept that she wants and that sometimes she can have and that doesn’t make her evil.

When we meet Wolfy, the only person he cares about is Felix, his scrappy, loyal best friend who I like to imagine one day gets to meet Capheus and watch terrible B action movies with him. Wolfy’s Slytherin primary is fairly obvious to any character with eyes, ears, or a brain stem, and so various plots around him turn on that loyalty– hurting Felix to punish Wolfy, rewarding him to court Wolfy. It’s a character role more often given to the sweet beloved and it’s rather delightful to see that dynamic play out with the gangly, startled Felix, who doesn’t understand how important he is.

Wolfy’s secondary is Hufflepuff– the house of patience and toil. A deliberate and reserved fellow, Wolfy just keeps going until he either breaks or succeeds. One of the assets being a sensate provides him is that he can borrow others’ flexibilities (or, rather, have those flexibilities anxiously thrust at him, when he seems on the verge of breaking). He and Lito serve each other especially well in this respect, with Lito stepping in to lie and maneuver when a flexible hand is needed, and Wolfy stepping in for Lito when he needs to stand in front of an oncoming force and refuse to budge, bow, or back away.

Kala, a Ravenclaw secondary, complements as opposed to supplements Wolfy’s secondary skills. When Wolfy’s resources and opportunities run low during his methodical murder of the men who almost killed Felix in season one’s climax, Kala steps in to provide additional destructive ballast in the form of kitchen sink explosives. Where Wolfy is terminator-level stubborn, carrying a host of earned skills and some terrifying patience to the battleground, Kala is prepared, inquisitive, and quick-thinking. As they both came into their own, and as they learned to lean on each other and trade strengths and skills, I think the pair of them would have turned into an even more terrifying duo of persistence predators.

Kala’s a Gryffindor Primary who’s interacted with very few real dilemmas in her life. She feels things strongly and with certainty, despite her lingering doubts about her ability to be a good person and to know wrong from right. It’s that strong desire to be good, to know what the right thing is and to do it, that marks her as a Gryffindor. She’s someone who cares about being passionate, righteous, and good, but she’s never had an enemy force to charge or a thorny path to defy. She’s always known what the sensible next step was– love her family, go to university, marry the nice man who loves her– but as she grows older she can tell there’s something missing. She keeps doing the “right” things, but she doesn’t care, and she wants so badly to care.

She worries she’s “bad,” maybe even just amoral, but the fact that this upsets her contradicts her worries– as does the fact that, when moral quandaries she does care about thump down at her feet, she reacts with immediate moral certainty. When she learns about the unethical activities of Rajan’s pharmaceutical company, her response is instant and righteous. It is wrong, she knows it, and she won’t stand for it. When shit hits the fan, Kala doesn’t dither or hesitate.

Despite that, much of her first season of story arc is Kala doing just that– dithering and hesitating over questions of love, fidelity, and marriage. She knows what’s supposed to happen, what she’s supposed to want, and she sits for most of the season in the middle of that quandary. On first glance, Kala can even look like a “burned” Gryffindor: someone who cares deeply about doing the right thing, but has lost their faith in their own intuition or goodness– or even in the idea of right and wrong itself.

But Kala’s not “burned” or frightened– rather, she’s just sort of morally bored.

Doing what is right and good matters to her, and Kala is passionate and  unflinching when it comes to those big questions– and marrying and loving Rajan should be one of those big questions. The thing is– it’s not. Not for Kala, and so she’s left in a tremulous in-between where she can’t rely on her gut, instincts, or desires to drive her to action.

Kala has never really wanted anything before. She’s never had big, important decisions thrown at her feet, and she’s intellectually certain this marriage thing should probably be a big deal. But no matter how she struggles to care about this and make a decision that comes from the heart, she can’t force it on herself. The inability to care here and to act intuitively makes her feel adrift and insincere. It’s not just that she’s not passionate about marrying Rajan– she’s not even passionate about not marrying him. It’s all a wash. Adultery, psychic or otherwise, is something that Kala vaguely thinks she should care about– but she doesn’t.

(Rajan, like Wolfy and Dani, is a Slytherin/Hufflepuff– he cares first and foremost about the people he loves, and he’s even fairly good at it, caring for Kala warmly and respectfully. 

Like Lito, Dani, and Wolfy, Rajan’s a Slytherin primary who hasn’t really bothered supplementing his “me and mine” morality with some sort of additional, larger set of guidelines. He wants to be okay, he wants Kala to be okay, and he likes to be nice. His quick and actual turn-around on the malevolent pharmaceutical practices is an aspect of his Slytherin– his wife cares and so as soon as he has time to digest her emotions, he cares, too, and morever, he acts in an immediate and effective way. It’s not even that he’s doing that to make Kala happy– it’s that it matters to Kala and therefore it is important and right.

His Hufflepuff secondary shows in the company he’s inherited and the ways he’s invested and buried in its mechanisms, his ability to play well with others without ever seeming to “transform” to do so (in the way a Slytherin secondary would), and his patient, kind courtship of Kala.)

In the style of Katniss Everdeen, the inspiring power of Capheus’s Gryffindor secondary astonishes him with both the quality and quantity of its effect. Gryffindor secondaries with such political and televised presences can becomes “figures” instead of people– despite their “realness” often being what the masses like and respond to in them. Capheus, like Katniss volunteering for Prim or mourning Rue, is just being himself– but it makes him into Van Damn the same way Katniss became the Mockingjay.

Capheus is good, and he believes in things until they happen. “I think it’s going to be a really good day,” he says. Capheus’s faith is something that can and does change his world. It’s the same thing that inspires even his enemies to like him– like the fellow who came to warn him mid-season 2 and promised him his vote if he lived.

On the primary side: Capheus has a strong and emotional sense of right and wrong, but also a willingness to hold himself away from things he think he cannot change. But, as he becomes more aware of his own power and how he might affect the world, he finds it impossible to keep himself in the shadows. He is like his father, which he and his mother fight about. Capheus cannot sit still when the world is broken and (and the “and” here is important) when he thinks he can change that world for the better. Like much of the cast, he’s a Gryffindor primary, who holds a strong and kind internal compass in his chest.

Losing her mother, her burdens dropped soundly on her young shoulders, left Sun growing up with a yawning absence and a sense of always trying to play catch-up. She was supposed to be her mother, to care for her brother, despite being a child herself. As an adult, she blames herself for her brother’s crimes and feels guilt for not being “good” enough– for not being who and what she was supposed to be.

Sun tries to build herself into what she thinks she should be– but she is at her strongest and most joyous when she is being what she is and just acting. There is a sense, with Sun, that she is always holding back– from that first clenched fist in her opening scene in the pilot to the moment she bursts into potentially murderous action in the season two climax. She has trouble trusting herself enough to act on her instincts– a “burned” Gryffindor who doesn’t believe in her own goodness, value, or strength– except for single spark-bright moments when she does. This might be why she likes fighting so much– for an instant, in the ring,  she knows exactly what she needs to do and she does it unflinching. After a season of considering, dithering, and thinking, she makes the snap decision in the climax of season two to go after her brother and it is a release and a culmination.

Sun tries to use reason and logic, a Ravenclaw’s tools, to supplement for her lack of faith in her Gryffindor. Her mother gave her that initial rule— take care of your brother. And she does: we see in the beginning of season one how aware she is of where her brother’s likely haunts are, how practiced she is at finding him. She carries her position in the company with grace and conviction even when having to deal with sexists who dismiss her. When considering whether or not to take the fall for her brother, she doesn’t listen to her gut screaming against it but instead walks and thinks and tries to use her reason to convince herself it is the right thing to do. She continues on trying to follow her mother’s gift of a system– take care of your brother– at the expense of everything she has.

The Sun who leaves the prison is different from the lonely young woman who entered it– this “new” Sun would never had given up her life for her brother’s. After friendship, connection, and support from the other inmates (and her fellow sensates), Sun is far more convinced of her own value and her own right to freedom. After her mother’s death, her father’s distance, and the adult-sized burdens she’s carried since childhood, Sun before this lacked any evidence that she was worth something to anyone.

Painting with her friends, conversation, and camaraderie were all influential in changing Sun’s view of her value, but one of the most influential moments was when the guards were killing her and her friend came to her rescue. Sun believes in action more than words, and that was certainly a clear-cut message about what her friend thought Sun’s life was worth. As she heals throughout the story, she swaps out some of logic she uses to guilt herself instead for the faith her friends have in her.

Those friends also give a nod to Sun’s secondary– Hufflepuff. It is the work, patience, and time Sun has put into things that pay out in the end for her. This is as true in her fighting as it is in the kindnesses she pays to others. Her teacher, her inmate friends, and the cop with the crush on her are all examples of this– anyone who knows Sun knows she is good– so good they are all willing to fight for her in their own ways. Her teacher hides her. Her inmate friends support her and even kill for her. The cop, who has seen her grit and goodness exactly once, immediately believes her and wants to be on her side. Similarly, it is years of patience and toil that have left her talented and powerful as a fighter. 

Riley is very tired and very sad, and that makes her sorting complex from the outside. Whatever her primary is, it’s burned to almost a crisp. She’s not a Slytherin, who prioritizes personal loyalties and obligations first. “Burned” Slytherins try to cut off all their emotional ties for self-protection, but Riley has no angst or barrier around caring for people, despite her losses. The same goes for Hufflepuff, the other “loyalist” House. Hufflepuffs care in a broader and fairer way than Slytherins, but the heart of it is still connection and obligation. “Burned” Hufflepuffs also try to limit their caring, exhausted and aching, and we don’t see that with Riley. She doesn’t seem to be avoiding connection when she’s hurting, and as she heals over the course of the series she doesn’t leap for and glory in the new connections she builds and accepts.

This leaves as options a “burned” Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, the two “idealist” Houses. Gryffindors value their gut where Ravenclaws value their reason– when a Gryffindor “burns,” they lose faith in their ability to know what’s right, to feel it, and to trust their intuition. When a Ravenclaw “burns,” they lose faith in their ability to think, assess, understand, comprehend, or decide. As Riley heals and comes into her own in season two, she seems to glory in her own growing faith in her inner compass. There is a delight in knowing her path and sinking her teeth into a fight that is particularly Gryffindor.

Additionally, like many young women who fall into the “manic pixie dream girl” mold, Riley is a Gryffindor secondary. Creative and genuine, the way she unflinchingly embodies what she does is apparent especially in her music and its reported effects on people. People are drawn to Riley, whether she wants them or not. She has a “shine” that’s exhausting, illuminating, and powerful. It’s what drew that one slick, creepy drug dealer’s notice, and also what lets her charm and win over our grumpy Scottish sensate friend. When entrenched in the paranoia of the sensate community, Riley cracks open their defenses with a moment of brave and risky honesty–letting him see where she and Will are–and, what’s more, he believes her when she does it. 

Will, despite having one of the spottier character consistencies in the story, settles pretty soundly as a Hufflepuff Primary/Ravenclaw Secondary. He’s a loyal, dependable kid who hangs a lot of his identity and worth on his allegiance to groups and families– he’s a cop, he’s a sensate, and both these groups matter enormously to his self-image. He’s torn between those loyalties– abandoning his partner and his father, his obligations to his new sensate family. Of the cast, he’s by far the most sympathetic to Whispers, who is “like them.”

Will’s best skills are showcased in his early season two interactions with Whispers, when he plays Sherlock to identify where the holding cell is, gathering data, pulling information out of Whispers’s shoes and wall outlets, and extrapolating onward. He pulls long cons (pretending they were still in Iceland, etc) or detailed, sturdy plans. He likes prep, experience, and back up– he hates it when Riley has to go off on her own to Chicago without him or any fallbacks, but Gryffindor Riley delights in the movement. He’s a cop-flavored Ravenclaw Secondary, and effective with it.

Nomi’s yet another Gryffindor Primary in this cluster of Gryffindors. She has a strong and intuitive sense of right and wrong, something that drives her to make good and effective changes in the world. Stepping in to take the fall for Bug was a practical and selfless move that she carries with her humbly. She’s the kind of person who might claim and believe that “anyone would have done the same.”

It’s also something, however, that can lead her to neglect anything outside her cause of the moment. Nomi can get tunnel vision, such as when she abandons her sister at the dress fitting, not even waiting to hear the end of Teagan’s question. Nomi is deeply invested in whatever her highest priority is, which makes her an effective agent in the plot, but which also means she can abandon things (at least temporarily) that do genuinely mean the world to her. She loves her sister, but they got news about Angelica’s cabin and that takes priority in that moment.

Nomi can’t do things in halves– she’s all in, or she’ll have to get back to you later. Her sister, who seems to be a loyalist house (either Hufflepuff or Slytherin) is thrown off and disappointed by what surely feels to her to be a lack of Nomi’s affection (and certainly is a lack of Nomi’s attention)– but in the tradition of a good loyalist, Teagan seems to be always willing to be there when Nomi pops back into her life.

There’s a certainty and validation, as well as a mutual awe, that Nomi and Amanita find in each other here. Both Gryffindor Primaries, they supplement and support each other in the context of a larger and often disappointing world. In a bold Gryffindor way (Amanita is a Gryffindor secondary, as well as a primary), they make their own magic, joy, and beauty. Whether in the eclectic, personal space of their home, escaping a hospital in the back of a cab, sharing fries and pot brownies, or kissing in the forest where Angelica once burned down her own home and killed a man doing it, Amanita and Nomi light the scene themselves. They’re self-sufficient and self-motivated and self-soothing, burning from the inside out in ways they recognize in each other.

They approach situations differently in terms of methods– aka the secondary. Amanita is a beauty of a Gryffindor/Gryffindor, a sorting the writers seem to especially adore and respect. She is confrontational, brave, protective, and throws all of herself into everything she does– a set of methods that work out for her every time. She likes attention (“costume opportunity!”) for a good cause. She doesn’t maneuver, hedge, or negotiate when something is wrong in front of her– she tells off her ex-friend for her transphobia at their first Pride, she sets fire to the hospital as a distraction, breaks into the surgeon’s apartment with unconstrained glee, bursts into the aisle of Teagan’s interrupted wedding, and in general dives headfirst into the dangerous plot of Nomi’s new life.

Nomi, though also a Gryffindor primary, is quieter on the secondary. Nearly all her best successes come from years of work and her ability to humbly and truly mean the things she does. Friends hide Nomi and Amanita because of old favors and generosity on their parts. Bug turns over his whole life for them, because once Nomi turned over her whole life for him. There is a sense of fairness here. Talented and generous, Nomi’s yet another super-powered Hufflepuff secondary in the cluster. For a story that so loves the idea of skill-set-swapping and community, it makes sense there’d be an un-self-conscious love of the puff.

“Please take them, they are trashing my ships!” Polt begged Admiral Ilom

“I have my own Humans here, I can’t handle more you deal with your own problems. Besides they liberated Remer why do you want to get rid of them?”

“Because they have a holiday every week or some kind of celebration and they keep changing the decorations, besides they eat EVERYTHING!!! Our own food supplies have dwindled and we have requested twice the normal food shipments but still they keep eating!!!”

“Well eat their food then, I’m sure they will share”

“Have you eaten their food?” Polt asked putting his winged arms on his hips, a stance he mimicked form the Humans.  

“…I see your point, but the answer is still no, you’ll just have to find a way of dealing with them” Ilom cut the link and Polt started pulling out his feathers in frustration but was distracted by a knock on the door.

There was a male Human in a small white dress and wearing a large horse mask standing there.

“Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me lots of sweets to eat!!” he said holding a bag.

Polt stared at him and the bag in confusion and the Human sighed.

“Just give me some food or I egg your door”

Polt was horrified having come a race that lays eggs he quickly ran inside and grabbed some fruit from his bowl and put it in the bag.

“Fruit? Seriously, dick move” he said moving on and Polt saw that the entire corridor had been redecorated with odd symbols and all the Humans were walking around in strange attire. Normally he would scold them for not wearing their uniform but then he saw Clerk coming his way…or he thought it was.

He was wearing a large yellow wig and a short dress that glittered and his chest had two cone shapes pointing out.

“Captain Clerk?”

“No, I’m Madonna and I’m a virgin” he said with a straight face leaving Polt to just get back in his office and lock the door.



The planet Owep'nop was the capital of the Alliance and all their affairs, they were also technically the government of all the member races although they could not influence local matters of the different races. It was lead by a council that had one representative of each member race, the Human had no representative as they were the newest member and the others were still in two minds if they even wanted them there. The decision to allow them to act as soldiers was not a popular one but since their work on Remer some were seeing their potential.

Consul Jetya was an Elong and the elected leader of the Alliance was scrolling through the millions of reports he had to go through not really reading them, he often just handed them out among the council and let them do it while spent the day with his wife’s. His feathers had started to go black and fall out but his even though his body was ageing his mind had not started to go yet.

“Mr President!” his co Consul Kelp and also a Elong came ruining in clearly excited about something.

“If it’s another relief request add it to the list”

“No sir, Remer has been liberated”

Jetya shot him a look “What? That world was supposed to have been left to slow the Gal who ordered it be liberated?”

“Um….it was Admiral Polt’s fleet”

“Well , then the Benemar in his fleet are the be decorated for it, it’s not everyday we get a victory against the Gal”

“It wasn’t the Benemar sir”

“Huh?

“It was the Humans, Admiral Polt attacked the Gal upon the wishes of the Human soldiers under his command”

“Wait, the Humans asked to go into battle?”

“Yes and they won, the Benemar were on planet but had no significant impact on the battle” he said handing the Consul the pad.

Jetya read through it at the number so casualties.

“This can’t be right” Jetya said.

“I checked them, three times” Kelp replied showing he was dead serious.

“There were only a hundred thousands Human soldiers against millions of Gal and their casualty rate was less than 5%”

“And some of those were just injuries, they only suffered 2% fatal casualties”

Jetya stared at him “No, this can’t be right I refuse to believe this”

“Sir I can assure you, these reports are accurate and we are getting similar reports from the others fleets”

Jetya stared at him and did not blink as if his mind had simply shut down, it was a while before he spoke again.

“Get me all the information on Human anatomy you can find and anyone, not a Human who knows their inner workings to be here NOW!”

An hour later a Kelp returned with a Seran, a race of complete energy that existed as a sort of mist, their single solid part of their body was their huge eye that seemed to look in every direction at once.

“Consul this is…”

“My name is Aopdfjgokjfsdvnhklvsgnkuvnhaloikhjmgfuioafhpikshjsrlkjbnsjghwtre……but you can call me Tim”

“Tim?”

“It’s what the Humans call me and I have come to like it”

“Okay….Tim tell me all you know about these Humans and their bodies, their strength and their weaknesses”

A holographic display appeared  in the centre of the room of a Human male and female performing various actions and movements.

“They don’t look like much” Kelp said.

“Indeed, I have only met a Human a few times and the reports we have on their capabilities do not seem to show in their anatomy” Jetya said.

“You may think so but to underestimate them would be your downfall” Tim replied “Have you heard of Vewlop?”

“No” both replied.

“It is because they invaded the Humans homeworld some centuries ago, they were undergoing one of their migrations and believed the Human could not put up a fight, they were wrong and the Vewlop are now extinct”

“Is this why your race pushed us to make contact?”

“I cannot speak for the my kind as a whole”

“That’s not a no” Kep said.

“So go on tell me what these Humans are like”

“As you see their outer appearance shows no special features but they perfectly efficient, every part of their body has it’s purpose, they only need two arms and legs and eyes. Their sense of balance is second to none”

“Annnd?”

“It is what is inside where they are truly fascinating”

The holographic display showed the Humans organs and bones.

“They have twice the muscle mass than the Benemar who were considered the strongest physically in the Alliance, until now. They can heal any wound at an astonishing rate, their bones are thicker and their eyesight twice that of even your race”

Kelp and Jetya looked at one another.

“There is also their chemicals within their bodies, should a threat appear their blood vessels flood with this chemical call ‘adrenaline’ which gives them extra strength and stamina so much so they can go days without rest in battle. Their brain power works 43% faster than even my race, by the time many would have only just noticed a threat they have seen it, analysed it’s threat level and began taking action against it. Their own stomachs are filled with chemicals to break down food that we can’t even identify them, they keep melting our beakers”

“So what about their weaknesses?” Jetya asked.

Tim floated there and the others were terrified he was going to say they had none.

“Well, they do have some but not many, they are immune to nearly all of the viral infections that plague the other races and most known munitions would not guarantee a kill as they have been known to continue to fight even after loosing an arm or leg. A sure way to kill them is to destroy or decapitate the head”

“What is the breeding rate of these things” Kelp asked.

“Their females can fall pregnant once every nine of their months, sometimes they birth more than one at a time”

“How long is that in standard Alliance time?”

“0.52 of a cycle”

“No wonder there are so many of them, before we know it we are going to be overrun by these things!” Kelp shouted.

“We have to find a way to contain them, you said they don’t get along with the Benemar?” Jetya asked.

“That’s an understatement” Kelp replied.

“Contact the Benemar high Chiefs, I need to speak to them, I don;t want us to defeat the Gal only to replace them with something worse”


Back on Bento Prime, the drums of war were sounding as they began to muster their forces.

Midoriya is far from the only character who gets a lot of mentoring help throughout the BnHA series.
So let’s talk about Bakugou for a(nother) moment, shall we?

I don’t know what it is about middle school in Japan, but it seems to really suck?
In every high school anime I watch, all the drama always happens in middle school, and the teaching staff is highly lax, if not completely irresponsible. They certainly didn’t do much to quell a young Bakugou’s more violent tendencies, or help a young Midoriya with what is very obviously a bullying problem.
It’s fairly safe to say that until he goes to UA, Bakugou basically lacks in authority figures, which is one (not all) of the reasons he got to act as bad as he did.

Since the start of the series, he’s gotten a bit better.
So let’s examine his dads (and one mum).
 

How to contain an explosion

The first time we see an actual authority figure reign in Bakugou, is when he hits UA.
And in this case you can take that quite literally.  

That person is, of course, Aizawa.
Now I friggin love Aizawa because he is one of the most underrated characters in the series and I will shout that to the rooftops for all eternity
but also,
Aizawa is, for his students and specifically for Bakugou, a constant source of lowkey support.
His teaching method is very much hands-off, letting his students make mistakes and figure out solutions for themselves, which seems to be the go-to for all anime mentors everywhere, but his support is definitely there.
Because, and this is important, he looks beyond posing. Beyond attitudes and images.
He has reason to, of course. Aizawa looks and acts like a drunken hobo half the time, but he is actually one of the better teachers and heroes as UA. He knows a thing or two about appearances.

And honestly, it is very much needed.
UA and the entirety of the story are, remember, utterly brutal to Bakugou and his self-esteem. It’s a pretty classic ‘break him down before you can build him up’ sort of theme.
But Aizawa is not part of this.
He restrains the kid exactly twice. Once, when he was about to (possibly) murder Midoriya, and a second time when he was blatantly breaking UA rules.
Aizawa does not belittle Bakugou, he does not fear him and most of all, he does not underestimate him.

He knows him, advises him.
He defends him.

He will scold him, but mostly he has a certain amount of respect for the kid. He trusts him.

I think for Bakugou that is incredibly important. Because Aizawa is someone he respects. Here is a pro hero who has taken the time to get to actually know him.


Aizawa is someone who puts down clear boundaries and then gives him the freedom to stay within them.
Whether out of disinterest or fear, that middle school teacher way back in the first episode wasn’t even trying to stop him from hurting Midoriya. That sort of shit would not fly in Aizawa’s class. But he’s also not going to lay it out for him. 
He trusts that Bakugou will, in fact, sort himself out. Once your core is on the right track, the rest will follow.

We are shown, in a very real way, that this is how you get the best results with Bakugou.
Horikoshi does this by showing us how NOT to do it.
For instance, while Best Jeanist certainly has the intentions and the authority as a Pro Hero to mentor him, he goes about it all wrong.

Because what he does is exactly that: micromanage, completely make over the outside, not the inside.

You can’t just expect the kid to change his entire being like that.
Certainly not because it’s fairly clear that Best Jeanist, well-meaning as he is, is not exactly trying to understand Bakugou.

           You and your boyfriend, Montgomery De La Cruz, walked down the Liberty High hallway hand in hand. To you, it was a perfect relationship. You’d always thought that both of you complimented each other perfectly, and frankly you knew you had changed him. Despite what others said about Monty, he was different. Sure, he had slight anger issues, but he could control them. The biggest thing he had learned during your relationship was self control and you were so proud of him. Both of you stopped when you reached your locker, you’d let Monty push you up against the metal and lean in for a deep, passionate kiss. It didn’t bother you that other people were watching, Monty loved showing you off to others so you were used to it. When he pulled away, both of you were out of breath and you smiled. “You know I’m hanging out with Jeff today, right?” His body became tense as he nodded. You knew he didn’t really approve of you spending one on one time with another guy, but Jeff Atkins was your childhood friend and you needed to make time for him too. “Well, he’s coming. We’re going to hang out now babe,” you giggled looking at him. He whined before giving you one last peck on the lips, “Have fun, I’ll call you later okay?” “Okay, love you!” “Love you too.” He walked away just as Jeff had gotten to your locker, you could see them give each some sort of glare, but you just shrugged it off. “Hey Jeff, how are you?” you stood up in front of your locker, grinning up at him. His face started to relax when he looked at you, and you were glad you couldn’t feel any negative tension. “I’m better, now.” You laughed and tugged on his jacket, “You ready?” He followed you out and you both of you started to walk to your house. “So….I was thinking and I can to the conclusion that we should watch something scary tonight, I’m in the mood.” You wiggled your eyebrows and Jeff laughed. “I don’t think your boyfriend would appreciate you cuddling under me, even if it is because you’re scared.” Gasping, you put a hand over your chest, “How dare you underestimate me! I’ll prove to you I’m not a scaredy-cat!” He shook his head, chuckling at your cuteness. Picking you up, he threw you over his shoulder, “Whatever you say princess.” The nickname he gave you stuck with you throughout your childhood, so it didn’t bother you. You kicked your legs and yelled, “Jeff put me down!” Looking around you, it was obvious people thought you guys were a couple. You decided a long time ago that you wouldn’t let things like this bother you because you loved Monty and he knew that, and that’s really all that mattered.
           When the two of you had reached your house, Jeff put you down so that you could open the door. You guys walked in and he immediately laid down on the couch. “It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to hang out. We’re drifting don’t you think?” “Everything happens for a reason.” You eyed him suspiciously, confused about what he was getting at. “What are you trying to say?” “Nothing, what do you want for dinner?” Walking over to the drawer, you pulled out a menu for your favorite Japanese restaurant. You had decided to forget about what he had said earlier but you knew it would bother you. “I think we should order sushi, trust me, you’ll love it.” he gave you a thumbs up, taking the menu to browse his options. “I’m paying!” You both shouted in unison, and you giggled. “Split the bill?” You asked, but of course he denied. Jeff always ended paying for the food. He never let you pay, and at times it made you feel bad. But on the other hand, it made you smile that he insisted on being the gentleman.
Later on, when you both had finished eating, you let Jeff pick out a movie for you two to watch. He picked out a scary movie, as you requested, called ‘The Strangers.’ You were almost positive that you would get scared, but you were determined to prove Jeff wrong. That was definitely easier said than done. Not even halfway into the movie you were shaking, and hiding behind Jeff. He laughed and offered to hold you but you refused saying that you weren’t scared. As soon as the movie was over, you got up to turn the lights on. “That was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” “I knew you’d be scared.” You shook your head while walking back over to him, “It’s late we should get to bed.” “Alright, I’ll take the couch.” Pouting you looked at him, “You can’t make me sleep alone, in the dark.” “Why? You scared?” He smirked, thinking the situation was funny.  “Shut up and hold me.”
           The next morning you woke up with your limbs tangled with Jeff’s. It was weird because you were used to feeling Monty’s body against you. He had a tight grip around your waist and it took a while before he let you get up. He groaned at the lost of contact and you giggled looking at him. “Mom made pancakes; I’ll race you to the kitchen!” You got a head start as he jumped off the couch and ran after you.
           Sunday night approached way too quickly and already Jeff was on his way out of the door. He had stayed at your house for the whole entire weekend. It wasn’t weird at all considering you guys were childhood friends and your parents loved him. They thought it was a good thing that you had put aside time to spend with your best friend. You stepped towards him, giving him a big hug before he left. “I’ve missed you, you know. I’m glad we got to spend time together. Stop being a stranger!” “I won’t, I promise. See you tomorrow.” You waved at him as he left to go home, “See you tomorrow!”
           To say this week had been hard was an understatement. Everything had seemed to be going downhill for you and you were really hitting rock bottom. Your grades were slipping, teachers kept on piling up the homework and not to mention Jeff won’t even look at you anymore. After the weekend you both spent together, you thought he would’ve kept his promise to you. It was weird because you’ve tried all week, but he just wouldn’t talk to you. You had no idea what had happened, because everything was fine when he left your house on Sunday, but now he won’t even give you the time of day. You missed him, you missed your best friend more than ever. The two of you had grown even more distant now, and you had no idea why. 
Staring back at the homework in your lap, you groaned. Sitting on the bleachers, you watched Monty’s baseball practice. He persuaded you to come, but you were tired and ready to go home. You occupied the rest of your time by playing on your phone. Time went by fast, and before you know it, it was time to go. Quickly you packed your stuff and met Monty at the bottom of the bleachers. You leaned in for a kiss, but he leaned back almost instantly. “We need to talk.” Your heart dropped and you played with the hem of your shirt, something you did often when you were nervous. “I think we should break up.” You were confused on where this was coming from. Yes, it was true your relationship wasn’t at its best right now, but it wasn’t burning either. “Why? I thought…I thought we were in a good place.” “I just…I don’t want to be with you anymore. We can still be friends though.” He gave you the fakest smile before turning and exiting the gym. “W-wait!” You called out for him but he kept walking, not bothering to turn around. You stared at the ground for a few minutes before leaving. The guys who had witnessed the breakup tried asking if you were okay, but you ignored them.
           When you got home, you slammed your door and leaned against it. It seemed like nothing would ever get better for you. Things were turning out worse than expected, and you didn’t know how to deal with them. You needed some type of escape from it all, and you decided Jessica’s party would be perfect. The party was tonight, and at first you decided against going, but you thought it would be an event that would help you get over Monty. Even though you knew he’d be there, as long as he didn’t try to talk to you, everything would be fine. Picking out one of your favorite black dresses, you set it out on your bed and went to shower. You did your hair and makeup before getting dressed, and then walked out of the door. Your parents didn’t really mind that you went to parties, as long as you took care of yourself. The first person you saw when you walked in was Jessica. You tried avoiding her, knowing she would ask about Monty, but seeing her was probably inevitable. “(Y/N)! You made it! Why didn’t you come with Monty?” “He didn’t tell you?” She shook her head, and started to look concern. “We um, we broke up.” She gasped, before a look of anger crossed her face. “It’s fine really, I just want to have a good time.” You smiled and she patted you on the back. It was disappointing because you were supposed to feel better, but seeing all these people together just made you want to leave. The spot on the couch next to you dipped, and you looked to the side seeing Jeff. You sucked in a breath, and continued to stay silent. “Hey, how are you feeling?” You snickered before answering the question, “Shitty. My grades are slipping, Monty broke up with me and I’m surprised you’re even talking to me because you’ve been ignoring me all week.” He looked deep in thought, searching for the right words to say. You got up, deciding that you needed another drink. “Excuse me,” you said, having to walk through a game of 'suck and blow.’ Before reaching the other side, you felt someone grab your arm. You turned around and they swiftly captured your lips in a kiss. You heard people cheering in the background and relaxed into the kiss knowing it was Jeff. When he pulled away you just stared at him, “Jeff, not that I’m complaining, but why did you-” “I love you.” Shocked by his words, you grabbed his hand and pulled him into an empty room. Before you could even say anything, he spoke, “I’m just going to be honest, I hate Monty and the reason we’ve been getting distant is because you’ve been with him. I know it’s bad but I’ve loved you ever since we became friends and I hate the fact that he got to you first.” You knew that you felt something with Jeff, but you weren’t exactly sure if you were ready. Your heart was beating and you started to feel nervous. As much as you did not want to turn him down, you knew that you had to do it. “I don’t know if I’m ready, but I do love you Jeff. DO I EVER.

  • Raven is the first girl Gar crushes on, but he’s in complete denial when any of the others tease him about it. 
  • M’Gann doesn’t initially trust Raven around Gar because she can’t gauge her intentions, and her heritage makes it difficult to see the good in her.
  • However, Gar is so fiercely on Raven’s side, that he never backs down, even when the entire Justice League turns against her. Naturally, M’Gann is swayed over because she loves her brother and chooses to believe in him.
  • Her and Raven eventually become the best of friends, developing a mental link that excludes everyone else. It makes Gar super curious whenever he sees the two of them snickering about some inside joke.
  • Raven really likes spending time with Beast Boy; he’s sweet and funny and sincere. He’s also the first person on the team to welcome her with such open arms. 
  • They become best friends, and Raven feels like she can trust him with anything. 
  • Raven knows he has a crush on her (she’s an empath after all), but chooses not to bring it up because she doesn’t want to embarrass him. 
  • Deep down, she might like him back, but it’s going to take her a while to get to admitting it. 
  • Raven is passive in battle most of the time, and it’s part of the reason many don’t trust her easily. However, the one time Gar was seriously injured and was taken by the enemy, Raven used her powers offensively in a display of great strength drawn from her anger.
  • Beast Boy is the one who gives her a tour of the facilities when she first joins up. 
  • While everyone else fears her powers, Garfield is in awe of them, so fascinated by everything about her, she doesn’t even know how to answer his questions when he brings them up. 
  • Raven finds it cute when the other boys tease him about his feelings for her; he blushes and denies it, insisting they’re just friends (but she knows better). 
  • Eventually, M’Gann tries to get them both to admit to their feelings about one another (but Raven’s doom and gloom gets in the way a lot). 
  • Beast Boy tried to get Raven alone to go to the movies, but when Bart and Jaime teased them about dating, and he denied it, they tagged along just to prove a point. He was super annoyed when he didn’t even get to sit next to her during the film. 
  • Raven has never felt more helpless than the time she tapped into Gar’s sadness and was unable to fix the damage. This is when she learns that some wounds are never meant to heal.
  • She finds his powers kind of cool, even though she’s never been too big of a fan of animals. Her introduction to him consisted of smaller, cuter critters (like a monkey, puppy, or a cat), so when she witnesses him in battle as a T-Rex or a Lion, she’s almost terrified of how much she’d underestimated him.
  • Gar always picks the car during Monopoly night, ALWAYS. In fact, he’s nearly scratched Bart’s eyes out over it. The room went pretty silent the night Raven joined and decided to take the car (unknowing it was his favorite token). He just shrugged and went with the dog instead (much to Bart’s irritation).
  • Knowing how much Raven likes to read (and her affinity to poetry), Gar tries to write her a poem, but when he reads it to M’Gann for her advice, she can’t help but laugh (not because it was bad, but because he’s so sweet and simple and sincere in his words, it’s just adorable). However, he gets upset and crumples it up, deciding against it. Feeling pretty guilty, M’Gann reads the poem to Raven (claiming she wrote it) while Gar is in the room. He nearly panics until Raven smiles and says that it’s actually quite good and very romantic, admitting that she’s sort of a sucker for love poems anyways. That day, nothing could ruin Beast Boy’s good mood. 
  • Upon meeting him, Raven is unfazed by his strange appearance and green skin. Instead, she’s more intrigued with his freckles. 
  • Gar is usually a bumbling mess around Raven in front of the others, tripping over his words, or staring at her openly (she’s just so pretty). 
  • Raven picks mint chocolate chip ice cream when the group hits up an ice cream shop after a rough battle. Beast Boy asks her if it’s her favorite flavor, and she shrugs and says she doesn’t have one, but for some reason, she liked the color because it reminded her of him. She has a good poker face, but Gar’s all blushes and heart eyes. 
  • During sparring sessions, Gar always tries to avoid fighting Raven; he prefers cheering her on instead. 
  • Martian Manhunter and M’Gann basically accept Raven as part of the ‘green’ family, even if she doesn’t quite meet the criteria.  
  • Gar stops monkeying around because he’s secretly trying to impress Raven. When she asks him about it and he says he wants to look more ‘mature’, she says that she’d be his friend no matter what he looked like on the outside and that so long as he was happy, she’d be supportive. It was the first time they hugged (with Gar pulling her in tightly). 
  • On her first night, Raven doesn’t have pajamas, and since all the girls are way older than her, Beast Boy has to lend her his (they’re the only two close in age and size, with Raven a few inches taller). 
  • There was something funny about seeing the usually reserved empath in a pair of green paw-print pants and a tight grey shirt with a gorilla beating his chest on the front.

hello hello! So I decided to share the things I’ve discovered, along with some stuff I’ve learned in Psychology, about sleeping // getting up early and enjoying the day! I hope you find this masterpost helpful :)

alarms

  • Don’t use the same alarm every day. Switch it up. Using the same alarm every day will make you really tired of it! It’s ultimately less motivating. Something as simple as switching up your alarm sound from day to day can make you more excited about the morning ahead of you!
  • Use an alarm sound that makes you happy, not an annoying one! Yes, annoying alarms can sometimes be super helpful. But waking up to them is really not that enjoyable. Using the car honking sound for my morning alarm just makes me irritated and less happy in the morning. It sort of feels like you’re being jerked out of your sleep. Try instead an upbeat song that will make you want to dance, or a song with motivational lyrics (I use Uma Thurman by Fall Out Boy on Mondays lmao) Another idea is classical music (here’s a giant classical masterpost), which can be a very renewing way to wake up! 
  • Don’t continuously press snooze. Continuously pressing snooze in the morning to get those extra 8-minute intervals of rest can be really disruptive for your sleep. Seriously, I used to do this all the time and I would always be groggy for at least the first part of the day. It is BEST to sleep for a solid block of time (at least one REM cycle) and then be awake for a solid block of time. Don’t keep hitting snooze! When your alarm rings, count to 3 and just throw yourself out of bed.

  • Adjust your sleep schedule for lots of time in the morning! Yes, this means going to bed earlier! But if you wake up earlier, you will have more of the morning to yourself. Making time for the morning is a great way to do something that makes you happy and get excited for the day to come. 
  • Put your phone on Do Not Disturb. This has helped me so much in trying to fall asleep earlier. For bonus points, put your phone far away from your bed! 
  • FACT: You sleep the best (and wake up more refreshed) when your room is around 62-70° F or 16-21° C. 

in the morning

  • Visualize your day what you’re excited about! You can have as much coffee as you want, but genuinely being excited about the day is the best way to stay awake! Try even writing down one thing you’re excited to do that day! It doesn’t have to be big, sometimes the little things are the best :) 
  • Go out running or do some exercise. Good exercise can yield both physical and psychological benefits!! If you can, running is a great way to start off the day. I like to run in the park near my house, but running down your street works too! If you hate running, or just aren’t up for it, you can try working out from the comfort of your own house (try the fitness channels on Youtube) If you’re brave, take a cold shower after that. (Avoid a hot shower because it will make you drowsy)
  • If you have time, make a nice breakfast for yourself! (Self explanatory… never underestimate the wonders of good food and coffee.)

  • Sleepyti.me: This is a sleep calculator that really works! The science behind it is that you will 500% more refreshed in the day if you don’t wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle. Sleepyti.me helps you to wake up at the optimal time so that you don’t interrupt any cycles!
  • WhiteNoise: A free app, WhiteNoise gives you a ton of different tracks and calming sounds to choose from that will play from your phone all night and will help you sleep. 
  • Pacifica: If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, try Pacifica. It’s a free app that has helped me a ton with my stress. You can also use it to talk to others who are feeling the same stress (for free!)

I just finished LOT season 1 and rewatched season 1 of the flash and something really bothered me - Mick Rory. In the flash we see him as someone who is able to lear how his gun works and able to work out the plans etc. Len is the mastermind ofc but Mic wasn't just the muscles. And we had Mick Rory at the begining of LOT aka IQ of meat. The difference really bothered me and only after the chronos deal we see him back to "inntelect levels" like in the Flash. Do you have thoughts on that?

I actually don’t think Mick’s IQ appears to dip at the start of Legends, to be honest. Second episode, with Len and Ray breaking into Savage’s house, he’s there berating Ray alongside Len and also completing Len’s sentences, going to fix the situation before Savage gets a hold of him. He’s shown right off the bat to be competent and underestimated.

Which is what it is, in my opinion. He’s constantly underestimated by the team, and with them constantly calling him and idiot or acting like he’s the slow one, the audience starts to believe it, when it couldn’t be farther from the truth. He might not be a scientific genius like some of the team, but he’s probably the most competent in terms of base skills and also easily the most practical. He has multiple types of intelligence that are underrepresented on the team because of how different he is than most of them, but it’s seldom appreciated or pointed out in canon.

Another pre-Kronos example? How he knows what Druce is up to and warns Rip that Druce is going to kill him. Interpersonal intelligence, down to earth, great at reading a situation. Actually, he has some of the highest interpersonal understanding on the team. He always reads a situation and sums it up perfectly, often the first to recognize what’s going on, if he’s being insulted, if someone else is being threatened or insulted, how to get under people’s skin, etc. He doesn’t always do what you’d expected him to with the knowledge, but he sees it and understands him. I’d say he and Sara are pretty equal in this regard.

More examples of him being smart though? He always knows what Len is talking about and easily goes along with plans intuitively without much explanation. Reads between the lines immediately when Len wants to make an extra pit stop with the jump ship in episode 3. Follows orders to the t and keeps things moving on all of their early missions up to and including in Russia. Knows what to do with the pirates when they’re locked up in that cell and how to make a deal and sort out of the situation. He’s the only one who even thinks of making a deal with the pirates and knows how to do it.

And when he’s called out for not being “thick” by Rip early on? He immediately pretends to be dumb again. Yes, pretends. Because I’ve argued before that him being the ‘muscle’ to Len’s ‘brain’ is mostly just an act they fall in to, especially around others, and it works. They managed to stay one step ahead of most people around them at all times.

It’s also worth saying… the way Mick sees the world? Is a bit different than most people, I think. He sees it in very practical terms of what can be used and how, regardless of that was it’s intended function, or regardless of whether that was someone’s intended skill set. Think of the recent scenes with Martin where he asks Martin to fix his brain. Martin complains that he’s not that kind of doctor but Mick doesn’t care. I mean, he says “same thing” basically, but he understands that Martin isn’t a neuroscientists logically, he gets that Martin is a physicist. He just doesn’t care because it’s not relevant.

What is relevant is that Martin is smart enough and knows enough about what’s happening to him to help him with it, neurologically. So at that point in time, the distinction between PhD and MD doesn’t matter and he expresses that. Some people interpret that as him being less than intelligent, but I’d say it’s more accurate to read that as him just keeping different categories in his head than most of us are used to.

Finally, I don’t think we need to value a person based on their IQ or intellect, and I don’t think that a high IQ would ever be the best thing another person could have to offer a team already comprised of so many geniuses. But I also don’t think it’s necessarily accurate to say that Mick’s changed? He’s always been super competent, that’s always been underestimated by the team (and most people really), and he’s always been much sneakier than he’s given credit for :)

I’m going to take this as an invitation to just list my innumerable favorite things about Will of the Empress, in no particular order.

  • the word-character for “chaos” is three for “mage” under one of “house”
  • Briar “I have trauma-based flashback nightmares if I sleep alone or hear bells but no, I don’t need therapy, why do you keep nagging me about that” Moss
  • Sandry has her magic spread through the ownhouse within like half an hour of arriving in Namorn, so she can tell if anyone arrives and come greet them properly
  • Tris sitting by the river and fixing the stones in the bank for several hours, completely losing track of time and lowkey terrifying the townspeople
  • Daja thinking Rizu must be using some sort of magic on her because she gets tingles every time they touch, omg. Best trope, honestly. When people have never been in love before and they assume they must be sick or it’s some magical effect.
  • “House Landreg breeds fine mules!!”
  • in general it’s an entire novel of the four of them reforging bonds of family and also being underestimated both individually and as a group, and fucking showing why you shouldn’t do that.
  • Sandry reconnects with everyone first because of course she does, and particularly Briar when Finn tries to kidnap her and Tris is playing with lightning and Daja is, ahem, distracted, so she just grabs Briar’s dull thread and SCREAMS down it.
  • Berenene flirting with Briar and Briar having this thought that, like, holy shit, he could do it but he would probably die.
  • (Empress Berenene and Ishabal Ladyhammer, btw, being fan-flipping-tastic examples of women with power and female antagonists who are sympathetic but you still so want to see them lose.)
  • also that one comment, I forget from whom, that Berenene probably underestimates how difficult it is to escape these disgusting marriage kidnappings because likely no one ever tied the Imperial Princess as tightly as hey would a peasant girl, nor locked her in a magic-proof box.

Virgil was a prankster. He loved to pull pranks on the other sides, most specifically after they did something to irritate or hurt him. Regardless of whether or not it was an accident, they would be sorry.

The first time that Virgil pulled one of these stunts was after Roman broke the anxious side’s headphones. They were the one thing that protected him from the outside horrors of society. Yet, here was Princey, borrowing them (without asking, mind you) and then returning them completely broken. Like, sound won’t even come out of them broken. It was an actual nightmare, and said nightmare would be transferred to Roman.

During one of the fanciful side’s daily adventures, Verge snuck into the creative part of Thomas’ mind. In one hand he had the most disgusting lotion he could find. It was greasy feeling and didn’t even do it’s job well and smelled godawful (faux-vanilla scented anything was already bad, but this was somehow worse). Why Thomas had bought a lotion from Etsy was a mystery, but it was here, so he was going to use it for something at least. In his opposite hand, Virgil was holding a bright red marker.

Now, sitting on Roman’s bed, Virgil was squirting a heavy amount of lotion straight into Roman’s boots. Beside him, he had every single one of Roman’s jackets with various vulgar words inscribed on the front. It felt so evil, but at the same time, so good.

She spends 4 years working with various displaced alien groups, focusing particularly on those in war torn regions. She establishes shelters and communities, helps teach language to both refugees and locals alike. She manages to stay mostly off the radar until some documentary folks get word of this incredible woman everyone calls the Angel of Hell, who walks through fire and destruction unfazed, who helps create communities in the chaos.

They arrange to go with her on her next mission. It’s a retrieval - she’s going back to what many call the dead zone because there’s word of a family of aliens trapped and confused. Her plan was to go in - alone - find these aliens, and bring them to the nearest shelter. When they meet her it’s hard not to be confused, though. She’s tiny and mousy, with glasses and a simple braid. Not at all what one would expect for an angel of hell. More surprisingly, her only reaction to their two man film crew is mild annoyance at having more people to protect.

They learn quickly not to underestimate her, though, when they follow her through bombed out buildings and tattered roads that would otherwise be impossible to navigate. At one point she stops them and stares intently at the ground before informing them there are landmines and they need to go a different way. At first they scoff a bit, but when an explosion shakes the streets not even ten minutes later they realize there is more to her than meets the eye.

When they reach the aliens they almost get their heads blown off. The scared refugees have guns and open fire when they approach, not understanding English or that they’re there to help. And then the angel surprises them again by slowly speaking their language, her tongue moving around each word in ways they’ve never even considered before. After a few minutes of softly spoken words, the rough little family emerges.

There are a handful of aliens, all seemingly different species from each other, all injured. She moves to each of them with a ruthless sort of efficiency, checking them over and providing what limited first aid she can. There’s a child with them, almost human in appearance if not for her neon green skin and gill-like features. She crouches before her and checks her slowly, whispering in that language as comfortingly as she can. After a few moments she stands, unzips her bulletproof vest, and slides it around the child.

When the documentary folk object her only response is “if I get shot then I get shot.” She scoops the child up and holds her securely against her, and then nods at the group to follow. She then leads them back to safety. While they creep slowly through the hellish environment, they ask her about who she is and what she’s doing here. She tells them she used to be the assistant to CatCo CEO Cat Grant herself, that she lasted two years under her when few could even last two weeks.

“Honestly,” she jokes with a smile, bright even under the dirt and exhaustion that covers her face, “that job prepared me for this one. Compared to that this is a cake walk.”

She smiles and laughs and switches seamlessly from English to the language spoken by the refugees, and when they arrive back at the shelter it takes her almost an hour to convince the little girl to let her go. It’s only after she offers her some candy and promises she’ll be back by tomorrow night that she finally releases her grip.

“Where are you going now?” The filmmaker asks, incredulous. She just smiles and heads towards the door.

“New rescue mission. See you soon!”

That’s the moment they really understand why those who meet her call her an angel.

Obi-Wan as a cat Jedi. Specifically a talking, lightsaber-wielding cat species, with the physical capabilities of Puss in Boots - can swordfight, wear clothes, walk upright, speaks fluent basic. Generally underestimated due to his size, but it doesn't make him any less the Negotiator or Anakin's Master. Also, like every cat, he's not too fond of water, and there's plenty of cat body language such as rubbing your head against someone you like etc. Everyone else is still their original species.

Trying not to smile, Qui-Gon pointedly ignored the light rubbing by his elbow as he continued reading the newsfeed they had missed since they had been gone from the temple, his lips twitching when the rubbing became more insistent until a furry little head popped between his side and his elbow, quickly followed by the body that belonged to the head.

“Obi-Wan.” Qui-Gon chuckled quietly while trying to sound scolding, lifting his arm only for the feline to quickly take advantage, laying himself out over Qui-Gon’s thigh to rest his head on his master’s thigh. “Little one I was reading.”

“Then you’re sitting still and I can lay here.” His padawan countered smartly, settling with the sun shining down on him.

Weak for those large green eyes, Qui-Gon only sighed then reached in and scratched the soft ears carefully, smiling when instant purring filled the air. “Oh fine, you can stay there little one.” He teased quietly only to receive a happy meow in return.

Setting the pad aside, he focused on his ginger tabby of an apprentice, knowing how important social interactions were for Obi-Wan’s species, using his fingers at the others ears while rubbing along his spine, feeling the light arches of the slender body resting on him.

Not many of Obi-Wan’s species became Jedi, mostly because parents were reluctant to give up their kits to the temple, option to have them Force trained on the planet. Obi-Wan’s parents however had given up theirs, citing it a great honor as Jedi are peace keepers of the galaxy.

Or so the report Qui-Gon had read about his padawan cited.

Servalos kept their own council and did not share it with the Jedi, but Qui-Gon was grateful for his pawed and furry padawan who brought light into his world. So he wasn’t going to dig for information he was not welcome to.

“…Come on, lets go to the gardens, the sun is better there.” He chuckled quietly, sliding his arm beneath his padawan and standing with him them, moving towards the doors. “You can see if you can’t hunt a bird.”

“Master!”

Warm laughter filled their quarters.

Qui-Gon is dead and his silka beads mean nothing anymore to Obi-Wan because Qui-Gon, his pridemate and friend is dead.

His pridemate is dead.

“I didn’t know cats could cry.” Obi-Wan looked up at the voice, staring at Anakin, the boy from Tatooine as he stood in the doorway of the room the Queen had given him. The one he had promised to train, regardless what the council said about it.

Obi-Wan pushed of the bed and wiped his face with a paw. “I’m a Servalo. I’m not just a cat. My species were space flying at the same time humans were.” He whispered, his voice coming in low and rough from tears he had tried not to shed.

He can tell the boy is curious. Curious, frightened and sad.

Sad for Qui-Gon.

Curious about Obi-Wan.

Frightened of the future.

Obi-Wan stared at him then slowly walked over to him. “Did anyone help you find food?” He questioned, taking Anakin by the hand when the other shook his head. “I figured, they’re all so busy. I’ll find you some.”

“I didn’t think you liked me…” Anakin whispered while following the feline.

“I don’t know you enough to not like you Anakin. But you’re not a bad kid. And you’re a growing boy and growing boys should be feed.” Obi-Wan offered in return, unknowingly setting a firmer foundation for a close bond.

Anakin held tightly onto the paw and followed the feline.

“…How long has he been doing that?” Ponds whispered as the two Commanders stared at their respective Jedi.

“About an hour now. General Kenobi went up to him complaining about being wet and General Windu just picked him up.”

They continued to stare as Kenobi continued resting on Windu’s lap, soundly purring as his back was rubbed steadily by a broad hand, the Korun absently reading the battle field report with one hand as he continued the steady rubbing.

“To be fair, the first five minutes the General was kind of…smoking. I think General Windu dried him off with the Force or something.” Cody shrugged.

They continued watching as apparently finally the feline had enough and sat up, stretching his body gracefully before standing up and giving Mace cheek a small nose nuzzle, grateful for both the petting and the drying.

Cody was grateful for his helmet and he had a feeling so was Ponds as their jaw dropped.

“…Well he is a feline?” He tried meekly.

“No one is going to fucking believe us.” Ponds hissed.

Of course no one outside of clones and Jedi were going to believe them either when they all saw Obi-Wan furry little body make an orange streak as he threw himself at a magnaguard, toppled it, promptly decapitated the two beside it and then landed with enough force down to shatter the metal that made its head.

The magnaguard even had an odd sort of death flail before it went still as the Jedi continued forward without a backward glance, already moving on to the rest of the droid army. Cody swore as he tried to keep up with the streak of orange and beige.

‘Let no one call him any less of a Jedi for being a feline.’ He was almost amused. Almost.

“…Obi-Wan come on.” The blond tried a coaxing tone as his former master continued stretching out in the sun, his head resting on the ground with his limbs spread out to soak up as much of the rays as possible. “You need to take a look at this please.”

“…Carry me.” Obi-Wan demanded.

“What?”

“Carry me. I’m not moving Anakin.” The feline huffed.

“I swear old man.” Anakin grunted but obediently moved over to the spot of sun and bent down, picking up the other Jedi under the pits. “I’m tempted to shake you.” He said as he lifted the other to eye level.

And promptly snorted when Obi-Wan licked his nose with a lazy look in his eyes.

“No you’re not.”

“No I’m not.” Anakin agreed, sighing at the others smug tone before he returned to the holo display, ignoring everyone else as he set Obi-Wan down on the projector, the others tail flickering as he took in the plan for tomorrow with a deep rooted purr.

My breath was taken away as soon as she began walking down the aisle.

God, she looked stunning.

The white dress. 

The way it made her skin shine. 

The flowers in her hands, making her eyes glimmer more than usual.

It was everything about her. Every little thing that I had fallen in love with.

And watching her walking down the aisle, Cas walking along side her, his own smile wide and bright, I couldn’t help the way my heart raced.

Our eyes connected for a few seconds, and I could swear, in that moment, I was done.

I knew she’d be the one I loved till the end of time.
