natgeo On assignment with @daviddoubilet // Photographing an American crocodile at night in the mangroves of Gardens of the Queen National Park, Cuba. This crocodile rested in the soft seagrass for several minutes and then rose slowly to take a breath of air and return to the bottom to sleep again. Crocodiles are called the engineers of the mangroves because their movements increase circulation of water and nutrients through the dense root systems of the mangroves. Gardens of the Queen Marine Preserve, located fifty miles south of Cuba, is a time capsule in the Caribbean that looks much like it did when Columbus arrived and named it in honor of his Queen. “A human being is a part of the whole called by us the universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” ― Albert Einstein
Fossilized Cowboys Light Up Dowtown With Parlor Tricks And Fast Cash
All these faces All these sounds All these mid-size sedans
With bumper stickers shouting shorthand cliches
With pastel tears
Lopsided and strange
All these trendy shadows
Selling kaleidoscopes by the gram
Spinning in circles until they vomit
All these artists breaking down for art’s sake
All these lullabies
I feel dizzy
And should probably sit down before I get sick
Why does the moon look so big?
Why do I feel so angry?
Is this house haunted?
Am I going through something?
Fake flowers light up my life with a fluorescent drag
Oceans hum doo-wop songs
Kids shit on each other
Broken sounds try their best to rationalize broken sounds
I sit up in my bed and softly lay my face into my palms
