Media Maison's Press Release Rundown

Writing a perfect press release takes time – as does distributing it to the top tier media outlets – so if your release isn’t getting responses it’s frustrating. Guess what? It’s not them – it’s you. Press releases frequently find their way into an editor’s “Trash” because you didn’t do your homework. Trust us. We know the truth hurts. That’s why we have tips on how to get your release read.

Press Release 101:

  • Is it news? The point of a press release is to highlight breaking news.
  • Ask yourself: “Is this newsworthy? Would I read it?”
  • Is it a media alert or an advertisement? Press releases resemble spam when they’re written as an advertisement.
  • “Who, what, when, where, why, and how” must be clearly introduced.
  • Edit. Then edit again. Then ask an extra set of eyes to edit it for you. Then edit again.
  • Check your links. An editor will not tolerate broken links.

Hope this helps! XOXO - Hannah

PR Intern Diaries :: Lakenya

It’s now the end of yet another week, and I’m still discovering ways to effectively utilize pitch writing. This is a ‘aha moment’ that I’m sure that many will appreciate. Before, signing on to learn the ropes at Media Maison for the next few weeks, I was busy sending out hundreds of emails to magazines and other career opportunities each day. While, I did get some replies back, the response rate was not nearly as high as expected. I was at a standstill. Was it my resume-my cv, I just couldn’t crack the code. What was so difficult about a 5 second, “Thank You” or “We’re not recruiting at the moment” email. While the verdict is still out on why so many emails went unanswered, I have discovered a quick adjustment that has me once again on top of my career search game.

Here are a few tips that I picked up, that can really improve your response rate.

  • Keep it short. Writing that looks to “weighty” is not a good idea. Get to the point, RIGHT AWAY

  • Do your research. Know who you’re talking to. Don’t be a robot. Let them know that you’ve done your research.

  • Talk about yourself. Why are you applying? What skills do you have? This should be done in 3-5 sentences. Make it work.

  • Give them a reason to open your resume. What is your one WOW skill? How are you connected?

  • Always end with a call to action. Never end an email flat. Always ask for a follow up or suggest that you’ll follow up shortly. This gives you an excuse to email again later.

Maybe these tips will even land you a gig in our offices. See you around.

How To Do Your Own Fashion PR

By Lauren Francis

Having a fashion publicist is definitely worth the cost, but if you’re an emerging fashion designer, that may not be a business expense you can afford just yet. If you’re working with a close-to-zero budget for your PR campaign, don’t sweat. (Well, try not to.) Here are a few ways to get around that dilemma and pitch your fashion label on your own:

Do research on how to pitch fashion editors effectively.

One of the biggest gripes that magazine editors have is the excessive amount of weak pitches they receive. If you’re going to go head-on with an editor, especially in fashion, have your pitch down to perfection as a PR professional would. Research what to say and what not to say. Know whom you are contacting by first name, last name, and title. Think of the “elevator pitch”. Can you introduce yourself and describe your company within 15 seconds? That’s how direct your pitch should be. List the basic who, what, where, why, when, and how in an easy, conversational tone, and conclude with an open-ended question about following up with you to send more information about your label.

If you’re lucky, a fashion editor will get back to you in regards to featuring your collection in an upcoming issue. Be prepared for any requests that may be asked, i.e. designer bio, line sheets, lending agreements, or lookbook images. At this point, your lookbook or press kit should already be completed for your current collection, and make sure that it’s updated for every new season. Be swift in your responses to editors when they ask for things because they can easily move on to the next designer if you’re not keeping up with them. Remember, they have frantic deadlines and you’re considered to be on their time!

Send your press release to other forms of media.

A well-prepared press release can definitely alert the media of your new collection. Spend some time on PR distribution websites and study how the best ones are written. Follow the standard model of a press release and formulate a few paragraphs about the new release of your collection and about you as the designer. Set up a free account with press release distribution sites and schedule your releases to be sent out to the local media. You can also e-mail and fax your press release directly to news stations and newspapers (they’re always looking for local stories to cover). Who knows - what if you’re called in to be featured in a morning news segment? That’s definitely a good look for your press portfolio.

Host a launch party and invite the media.

If you plan on celebrating the launch of your new collection, you’re responsible for securing the venue, setting up the event, and sending out media invites. It’s best to send formal invites to editors through the mail at least 3-4 weeks in advance so that gives them the opportunity to pencil you in their schedule. Fashion bloggers are also great to invite, of course. Event photos, blog write-ups, and Twitter mentions from different bloggers means more publicity for your fashion line, which you need in order to attract more customers. Make sure to save your press clips and send thank-yous to anyone doing coverage of your event.

Make friends with fashion stylists.

Another way to possibly have your fashion line featured in a magazine is to have a stylist hook-up. They’re always pulling clothes for photo shoots and looking for hot, new designers to work with. Get acquainted with some fashion stylists in your area by using social media and going to different fashion events in your city. It’s also good to know a lot of photographers, models, and makeup artists who can probably help get your collection used in an editorial photo shoot.

There’s so much work that goes into handling the PR side of a fashion label that more than likely should be handled by a pro. Once your label starts becoming increasingly profitable, hiring a good PR team to help you market your brand would be the best way to go. While it’s in your hands for now, do tons of research on the job of a fashion publicist and implement some of those ideas into your own marketing campaign.

Bloggers are playing a bigger role than ever before in successful PR for brands (especially start-up businesses). I’ve heard a few bloggers rant about PR’s before, praise them, be frustrated with them, but in total honesty, this happens on the other end as well.  Here is what I look for from bloggers as a high-end specialised fashion PR who works with bloggers, stylists and magazine editors. …

#nasty #Sunday #shoulder and #calves #session #sweat like a absolute #beast 👹 Thanks to the 500g of #carbsafterdark and #coconutoiloneverything lol. This is my own variation of #delt raises. I call them “Seated Rotational 3D Delt Row Raises” Basically seated with slight lean forward to emphasize side and rear delts together as well as trying to pause at the top with a slow decent and rotating the #dumbells at the bottom with palms facing forward. Allows for the full function or the delts but also I find less chance of #snapcity with the rotation. And also the rotation forces me to control and slow the #movement Also I try to keep the Dumbbells behind the plane of my ears and I also #squeeze my #scaptula and finish at the top pulling my shoulders up and back simultaneously similar to a High Boy Row.
