Edit: Previously, this post explained how to sanitize a sponge in the microwave - something I did read on several sites before adding to the list. However, I removed it due to concerns expressed by other readers about the creation of super bacteria/possibly melting plastic based sponges.
Bras last longer if you let them air dry. Don’t put them in the dryer.
If you have a problem with frizzy hair, don’t dry your hair with a towel. It makes the frizzies worse. (I recently read an article that said to use a t-shirt? I brush mine out and let it air dry.)
Whites wash best in hot water. Everything else can be in cold - save on your electricity bill.
Airing out your room/house and letting sunlight in every so often can decrease the number of household pests like silverfish and ants.
Black underwear is best during your period as stains are less likely to be visible.
To save money, put aside 10% of each paycheck into a savings account. It’ll add up.
Unless your hair has something on/in it (like grease or mud or something), using conditioner first can actually be the better choice. The conditioner holds in the good oils that help you hair look sleek and beautiful, which shampoo would otherwise wash away.
Speaking of shampoo - if you have long hair, washing just the bits that touch your scalp is generally enough. The rest of your hair gets cleaned with just the run off from your scalp.
If you put a tampon in and it’s uncomfortable/you can feel it, you didn’t do it quite right/it’s the wrong size. A properly placed tampon is virtually unnoticeable by the wearer.
Apply deodorant/antiperspirant a couple hours in advanced of when you need it. This gives the product the chance to block your sweat glands. Using deodorant just before going somewhere where you’ll sweat (this means walking outside for people in high humidity places) results in your sweat washing the deodorant off and starkly limiting its usefulness.
After running the dryer, use the dryer sheet from that load to brush out the lint catch - it gets everything off in a fraction of the time it’ll take you to get it clean with your bare hands. Paper towels also work well.
Wash your face everyday, or as often as possible. Forget which brand of cleanser is best. Just washing your face everyday will guarantee you clearer skin. And do you best not to pop pimples, as tempting as the urge may be.
Fold laundry asap after taking it from the dryer to avoid wrinkles. This may seem obvious for dress shirts and silly for things like t-shirts, but you’ll notice the difference even then once your shirts stop looking like unfolded paper balls.
1. Never leave cookies in the oven too long. Even if they’re still really soft, take them out after the recommended time. When they cool they will harden. Trust me, no one likes cookies that taste like rocks.
2. Always take a jacket. Even if you think you’ll be fine. Even if you’ll be inside. Even if there’s a heater. Bring your jacket.
3. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help when you need it because everyone needs help sometimes.
4. The best pancake recipe is 1 cup equal parts flour and milk, ½ cup sugar and a pinch of baking powder. Add chocolate chips for extra deliciousness.
5. Go outside every day. Even if you don’t want to. Even if you have to use all your strength to drag yourself out of bed. The sunshine might not cure your problems, but it’ll do you so much good to breathe fresh air.
6. Don’t let your hobbies fade away. Keep reading, keep drawing, keep singing, keep painting, keep running. Keep doing what you love.
7. Carbs are not the enemy. They fuel your brain. So eat those potatoes and that rice and don’t you feel guilty about it for one second.
8. I know it sounds cliché but time really does heal all wounds. Give yourself 6 months and it won’t hurt so much, trust me.
9. Be kind. There is no reason for you to put someone down.
10. Learn to love yourself loudly and unconditionally and never apologise for it.
11. If you ever find yourself involved with someone who treats you like you’re nothing, run for the hills and never look back. They don’t deserve you.
12. Rose hip oil is a miracle worker. Gently rub over your face each night before bed and your skin will feel like silk.
13. Drink. Three. Litres. Of. Water. Every. Day.
14. Take pictures. Document everything. One day you’re gonna want to look back at all of this, make sure you have the photos to look at.
15. Let go of anything that weighs you down. The past is the past and there’s nothing we can do to change it. Every day is a another chance for us to do better, to be better.
16. Spend as much time as you can with the people who make you laugh.
17. Set up goals for yourself and keep yourself motivated in whatever you’re doing. Always have something to work towards.
18. Try to make your bed every morning. Yes it’s a hassle when you’re half asleep but there is no better feeling then coming home to a nice clean freshly made bed, especially if you’ve had a bad day.
19. Treat yourself but also look after yourself. Eat lots of fruits and veggies and move your body then dance all night and have a doughnut as a midnight snack. Life is about balance.
20. Never be afraid to love, even if you’ve been hurt before. Live life with an open heart and you might be vulnerable but you will experience so much joy.
hello everyone!! since I’m not a pro at studying (I
just do my best) I thought I would share with you some of my go-to tips to have
a better day/week/month/life 😊
wake up early!! this may seem typical but I used to
sleep in a lot and when I started waking up earlier I noticed a big change.
clean your face daily! every morning and night clean
your face and moisturize. just create a skincare routine and stick to it! also, use a day per week when you have time to relax and put some masks and exfoliate your face and body.
this may seem stupid but dress clothes you like and put on some makeup! but most important when you feel like this is not your day. when we’re
feeling bad or a little sad we usually throw on some sweatpants & a
sweatshirt and don’t use make up and even though it may seem stupid, if you
push yourself to wear your favorite outfit or put a little bit of makeup you
will see yourself looking better and this will make you feel better during the
day (I promise)!!!
eat breakfast! brain food guys!!! this is the most
important meal of the day. as a Spanish phrase used A LOT by my mom says “eat
breakfast like a king, have lunch like a prince and have dinner like a poor man”
(desayuna como un rey, come como un
príncipe y cena como un mendigo).
make to-do lists: yeah, make to-do list for everything
you need them! this will help you to do everything you must do without leaving
any task (which would happen to me when I didn’t write out what I needed to do)
shower every night! okay if you prefer taking a shower
in the morning is up to you but showering at night relaxes you and helps you
talk to people everyday (even if it’s your parents)
you need to talk guys and tell someone how you feel and what happened during
the day (those days I don’t talk to my friends/family I feel super sad and I don’t
listen to music that makes you feel alive!! I have
this playlist where I put every song that makes me feel something. I think
music is so powerful and can help you change your mood in a few secs
go out to nature! since I live in a city it feels super
great when I get to spend some time out in the woods or the beach – go running,
swim, take a walk or just sit, breath fresh air and enjoy!
dance, dance, danceeeeeee!!! hahah it doesn’t matter
if your dance moves are worse than a potato but dance, jump and let go!
treat yourself with your favorite meal every now and
then. I love eating so whenever I get to eat my favorite food it’s a happy day
for me hahah :’-)
talk to your reflection in the mirror. tell yourself
how great is your hair today, how glowy is your skin and how beautiful are you!
do it every day, it’ll help 😊
sleep enough hours! when I don’t sleep a healthy
amount of hours I feel super tired and I get angry super easily, so sleep well
and wake up to a beautiful day!
journal and write daily or when you feel like you need to! write what you feel, what happened in that day, write your goals, quotes to summarize the day, the dreams you had last night… I don’t know! just let your mind go and write and/or doodle I promise this helps :-)

Study breaks are really important, but sometimes it can be difficult to think of what to do, or even know what kind of break to take. So here are some suggestions for breaks depending on how you’re feeling at the time.
Some generic multipurpose breaks:
Yoga or guided meditation.
Moisturise your hands, or paint your nails.
Go to the toilet, and get a drink.
Go for a walk.
Play a game online.
Listen to some music.
Write down a bit of your daydream.
Make a meal.
Play with a pet.
Read an article/wiki page
For when you’re overwhelmed:
Have a relaxing shower with a favourite body wash.
Make sure to step away from your study space, this is important.
Go for a walk; do a short yoga routine, or a 15 minute guided meditation.
Talk to a friend or parent, see if they can give you some support.
Give yourself a treat - like a packet of chocolate buttons, or something small you enjoy. Eat them, and savour them, away from your desk.
For when nothing seems to be coming together:
Make a to-do list of what needs to be done.
Look at the task as if you’ve never seen it before.
Have lunch or a snack, or nice drink. Do it away from your desk.
Do something you enjoy, like reading a bit of a book, or playing a playlist you like.
Talk to someone about the problem; ideally a supportive parent, friend, or teacher
For when you are stressed and want to rip your hair out:
Shower, or have a bath.
Watch funny videos online, or read those funny reviews, like the Haribo gummy bears ones.
A short yoga or guided meditation video can really help (and I’m not one of those ‘yay, yoga’ people, but it can really help).
Do something you are capable of doing without much stress - this could be a chore, a hobby, or something random you like.
Make yourself a drink you enjoy, make it as special as you can, and then find somewhere else to drink it.
When you are bored:
Engage in productive procrastination.
Learn a new skill - such as a basic crochet stitch, or how to start a fire without a lighter.
Watch a TedTalk, or short documentary on YouTube.
Make a study playlist, try to include some music you’ve not heard before.
Find a new recipe to try / place to visit.
Play a quick game online - bingo, pictionary, etc.
When you are hungry, but the bored kind of hungry:
Try eating something that takes longer to prepare. Not just a snack that’s quick to grab, but something that takes a little more time. Cut up your fruit, make it look nice; make several snacks that can be stored for latter or another day.
Take a few minutes to some pictures of your study space or notes, edit them and make them into a post ready to pop on your blog.
Go for a wander. It needn’t be outside, even walking around the stacks in a library and looking for some interesting titles can give you a break (and an inflated reading list, so do this one at your peril).
Paint your nails, or do some cuticle maintenance by moisturising them.
Spend five minutes on Pinterest looking at ideas for crafts or something you enjoy (make sure to set a timer for this, it’s easy to be distracted).
When you haven’t taken a break in a while because breaks are for wussies:
Read about the Pomodoro method and how it helps boost productivity. Use a free timer app to give it a go.
Zentangle, relaxation colouring, going to the toilet, etc.
Just chil-lout. Seriously, do something to relax yourself. You need a break!
When literally anything is more interesting than what you’re supposed to be doing:
Go for a short walk, or do a few stretches away from your study space.
Watch a TedTalk on something interesting or a totally random subject.
Find an article/wiki page on something you know nothing about. Remember to limit yourself, time-wise, on this sort of thing.
Organise your bag/folder/pencil case (anything small you have on you).
Listen to some music in a target language/language you would like to learn.
When something keeps distracting you:
If it’s something you can get rid of, try to do that.
If it’s something you need to do, if possible, then to do it.
If it’s a thought that won’t go away, take five minutes and write it down in as much detail as you can, and then put it away for later.
Leave your study space for a moment, get up and walk around a bit, maybe stretch your neck, back and arms.
Tell your pet what’s wrong. Bonus if you do this in another language.
For when you feel like giving up:
This is a good time to step away from your work and doing something else entirely for a little while. Take a longer break, watch an episode of a show you like, or browse for some new music, read a bit of a book.
Take a shower.
Make yourself a drink and something to eat, and eat it away from your desk. Relax a bit while you’re doing so, and set up a pomodoro-style timer when you get back to studying, so you can remember you’ll soon have another break.
Engage in a small act of kindness.
Pet a cute fluffy friend.
When you feel entirely unproductive:
Perform some productive procrastination! Vacuum the house; wipe down a window, scrub the kitchen tiles, reorganise your underwear drawer. Pick a chore that needs doing and do that. Honestly, even just tidying a bookshelf, or taking your washing out of your room, or packing away some clothes can help. Do something where you will be able to see a visible difference that your actions have made.
Spend half an hour on a hobby you like - knit, make origami swans, fiddle around with a robotics project.
That thing you’ve been putting off? Go on, go and do it, and tick it off your check-list.
I hope that these give you a few ideas for much-needed, and productivity-boosting breaks.
• to make nails grow faster, mix ¼ cup of organic coconut oil, ¼ cup of raw organic honey, and 4 drops of rosemary essential oil. warm it up in the microwave for 15 seconds or less, soak your nails in it for 15 minutes. do this 1-2 times a week because it’s a form of nail exfoliation 💅
• steer clear of acetone-based nail polish! they will scrap your nails and leave them thinner. 👎 gel nail polish is safer and stays on for longer. 👏
• take your supplements if you seriously need them !!! invest in some biotins, omega 3 and omega 6 oils when they’re necessary to improve your health. if not, YOU ARE FINE. you’ll find what you need in your food👌 btw, if you’re black, we especially need vitamin d and sunlight! get that money and TREAT.YO.SELF.
• every once in a while, you get broke hoe problems and we can’t make sugar scrubs without the right ingredients. 😥 but, you got a few bananas left? got some cocoa butter and shea butter, some apricot kernel oil, a little brown sugar too?? MIX THAT SHIT TOGETHER AND PUT IT IN A BLENDER. when it’s completely smooth, pour into a mason jar and add in the brown sugar 👍👍👍 your legs will feel silky smooth and refreshed after the exfoliation, trust.
• drink. your. green. tea!!!! 🍵 i cannot stress this enough! it cleanses bad toxins out of your body, eliminates unneeded bacteria, promotes faster metabolism, and can also promote growth for hair. get at least 1 cup in when you have the time 💧
• change your scarves and pillowcases out if they are cotton. cotton makes the hair brittle and dry and recycles bacteria and dirt into the pores of your face. ❌ using soft fabric like silk and satin will be more gentle on your hair. also, wash your pillowcase every week! avoid all the bad stuff and wallow in the clear. 🌟🌟🌟
• get your protein treatments, ASAP. it cleanses your hair while deep conditioning it and clarifying it of product build-up and leaves your tresses soft and smooth. whip up an egg and 3 tbsps raw plain yogurt mix and massage it into your hair. wash out the egg with cold water after, if not , it will fry inside your hair under heat or with hot water! leave it in for 20 minutes under a heat source, rinse, and then continue on with your shampoo routine ✨✨👸💆
• (FOR NONBINARY PEOPLE, BIOLOGICAL WOMEN, PEOPLE WHO STICK TO THEIR ASSIGNED GENDER) not as busty in the bra size or big in the ass area?? don’t worry. v-necks, crop tees, high waisted shorts/jeans, halter tops, and leggings are great alternatives to emphasizing your body. do your squats!! do your leg exercises!! do your push-ups for those bigger boobs!! never stop pushing yourself to better your body 💪👊☝if you are biologically male, nonbinary, or stick to your assigned gender, maca root supplements help speed up metabolism and balances out the hormones, which would help it have a growth spurt, if wanted 💕
• ginger tea is great if you are hungover and it cures nausea 💝💞
• avoid. putting. coconut oil. in. your. vagina (if you have one) !!!! it is antibacterial and antifungal and does wonders for hair and nails, but steer clear of physically inserting it inside of you. it’s a recipe for a yeast infection, or better yet, if you do it before getting busy in the bedroom, unwanted pregnancy! because it EATS HOLES IN LATEX CONDOMS!!! 👎✊
• do your eyebrows/eyelashes a favor and put extra virgin olive oil and castor oil combined on them. rub it in gently and don’t regret one second!! do it daily for a couple weeks, and you WILL get thicker eyebrows/longer eyelashes. 💋👂
• looking for a makeup remover, but they just don’t work out? mix 2 tbsps alcohol-free rose witch hazel (diluted with water to numb its astringent effect *for sensitive skin ppl out there*) 2 tbsps jojoba oil, and of course, 2 tbsps filtered water. add them all together and pour it into a dispenser and shake it well before using. wipe it on your eyelids with unscented towelettes and walah!! 💁🙌
to get at stray makeup, dip a cotton q-tip into the mixture and be careful and gentle.
• you see this everywhere, but pee after sex!!! please!!!! avoid a uti and infection by doing so. even then, it won’t prevent you entirely from STDs. get tested, get your partner tested! 😘😉
• red raspberry leaf tea helps with heavy and irregular bleeding during your period (if you’re a biological female), and the fragrarine helps tone and tighten the pelvic muscles, which reduces cramps! 🍓🍓🍓🍓 drink it regularly before your period to see results!
• black tea is a natural lip toner! spray onto your lips or rub it in and get them plump, soft, and refreshed! 🍷
• love yourself! 💞💕 pamper your needs and chill at an expensive spa, get a bullet journal, drink your water. drown yourself in well-deserved luxury! me-time is the best time. 😊

Ditch cotton balls/pads/tampons/rounds/ect. Switch to rags and stuff to remove makeup and wash your face, then replace cotton pads/tampons with washable cloth pads and a menstrual cup. Save a shit ton of money a month and do a lil bit better for the environment.
Also get rid of those make up triangle things. Get a silicone applicator or just use your fingers. No shame.
Make sure you clean your brushes though, so you don’t have to keep buying more. I only have four brushes now: Eyebrow brush, smaller one for contour/highlight (I rarely highlight), big brush for powder, and one double sided brush for eyeshadow.
Think about switching contours to just unsweetened cocoa powder. I mixed a 1 part dark to 2 parts regular for my skin tone and apply a line and blend a bit then use my big powder brush to help blend. Why spend the shit ton that Too Faced charges for something that literally smells the exact same.
Water filters - you know you need to drink water so don’t question me. But if you broke asf and don’t have a fridge filter, get a bamboo charcoal stick on amazon and plop that in a thing of tap water for a couple hours. Tastes better I promise and gets rid of baddies.
Need killer outfits? Second hand stores like Plato’s Closet or Upscale Cheepskate are good places to try. I found some professional as fuck Ann Taylor suits from a thrift store and I bought that shit up and made the pants fit me. Also, while you’re at it. Thrift stores have a lot of jars and other glass stuff so buy that shit up if you use a lot of plastic/single use stuff at your place.
Learn to sew, trust me you’ll thank me. My pants are all specific to me because I re-tailor them for me only. WithWendy on youtube has a good tutorial on how.
Knock-off yeti’s are dope, get one. Two of those are your needed water in take a day and I use mine for hot leftovers a lot. Also switch from plastic cups/coffee mugs, switch to glass, metal, and ceramic. Better quality and plastic doesn’t leech in to your body.
Speaking of leftovers, if you’re in the Sugar Bowl with me, you probably have a decent sized bag to have everything always. Get a collapsable lunch box (preferably silicone) and take it with you. If you and your SD are out and you get to take home leftovers he’ll be so impressed that you have your own. Also get a straw, metal or silicone if you chew your straw all the time like me. He’ll be 10/10 impressed by your preparedness.
Lush is a lifesaver. I love their products and I have the little tins for their shampoo and conditioner. THOUGH!!! I’m trying to use less shampoo in general and down to only using shampoo once every two weeks, my hair feels a lot healthier. Plus, no plastic bottles with the bars. Also, their Ro Argan body conditioner is to die for, all my SD’s can’t get over how nice my body smells and how soft it is. Then they recycle the tubs when you’re done. Also, their toothy tabs are dope toothpaste alternative.
Switch to fountain pens with pistons and learn how to use them. More eco friendly then any other pen and looks hella professional.
Stop using shit on your face. Washed, masks, ect. Quit it. It’s bad for your skin. Use only water with a clean wash cloth and if you need to exfoliate: use a little bit of baking soda and water to a paste, apply and leave for a few minutes (Not long), and rinse with water. Only use your hands. Healthier face means the less makeup you have to use and girl lemme tell you it is freeing to barely need concealer/foundation.
Also! If you have bad acne or just need a moisturizer with acne help! Almond oil (if you’re not allergic) with about 20 drops of tea tree essential oil, shakey shakey, boom. It’s a acne fighting moisturizer and all I have to do now is stop touching my chin cuz the rest of my face is fine.
Also stop buying exfoliators. Sugar, coconut oil, and a splash of vanilla will do a lot more good and is a lot cheaper.
Shave with a safety razor. It’s scary at first just go gentle and slow and make sure you wash the blade a LOT after one or two swipes. Eventually you’ll get a hang of it and be more confident. I always exfoliate before I shave to make sure it’s all ready, and for around your kitty be sure to pull the area tight while you shave to get it good. For your cat itself, make sure you trim that shit up close with a pair of scissors before you do anything. I use shea butter lotion to shave there, exfoliate with a rough cloth because you don’t want sugar in that area, and pull tight to shave in very short motions. It takes a while but its worth it. I use an alum stone after and tea tree oil if I have any red spots.
Don’t forget to exfoliate your underarms too. They get stinky because dead skin and sweat build up there. Also ditch the deodorant. You can make your own or I use rose scented witch hazel. It takes a bit to detox it from your skin if you use it a lot but its been vaguely linked to breast cancer so it gets a mighty Fuck That from me.
Healthy nails are 10/10 every day. Coconut oil on them and around them before you go to bed and don’t use them, use a file. Same for toes. Clippers fuck them up and files just brush it away.
Bamboo toothbrushes are lit, can be composted just gotta remove the bristles once you’re done with it.
Get a compost bin and find a place where you can take your compost in your city. The charcoal filters can be composted too. But the bin I got from Target has a carbon filter on the top so I don’t smell anything and my university has a place to take it. And I haven’t seen a single bug or rodent even in my dorm.
Ditch the house cleaners. Use white vinegar in glass jars and citrus peels. Fill a quart jar a little under half full with citrus peels (not packed full or anything) and then fill the whole thing with white vinegar. Let that shit sit under your sink for about two weeks then strain it in to a separate jar, compost the peels. This is a multi-purpose cleaner. I use it on surfaces and spray it on my floor and use a swiffer stick but with a microfiber cloth instead of the pads because fuck that and use it to clean my floors. For glass, one part white vinegar to one part water. Use a microfiber cloth and bam, streak free shine bitches.
Use loose leaf tea, those lil packs are made from plastic a lot of the time and in hot water plastic leeches in to the tea so I just use a metal strainer

✨- use shimmer body lotion to make ur skin n limbs look radiant n a lil sexier than they already do (beautiful hoes come in all shapes n sizes💜) even a cheap one like dove or VS does the trick n ur skin feels soft to touch too
✨- don’t forget to castor oil ur eyebrows every night
✨- be a confident hoe.. Smile more n sit with good posture n u will appear more confident n approachable
✨- warm n wet camomile tea bags help get rid of eye infections n eye bags really well and it works amazingly for tired puffy eyes too lay down for a while and place them on ur closed eyes
✨- WATER n green tea, drink them both (skip the tea if ur caffeine sensitive)
✨- if u self tan like me, get you some exfoliating gloves. Actually everyone get them, they revolutionised my skincare routine n now I don’t need to buy or make body scrubs unless I wanna treat myself on the odd occasion
✨- always wear spf on ur face and under ur makeup even when it’s cloudy
✨- always wash ur face in cool or lukewarm water n avoid doing it in the hot shower as the heat n pressure can upset the skin
✨- as tempting as it is to make it smell like ur shower product for when ur getting head, don’t clean ur coochie with ur shower gel it can upset the pH n cause infections such as thrush and BV as well as parched skin
✨- spray ur pressure points (behind ears, insides of elbows n knees, inner thighs, décolletage, wrists) n ur perfume will linger all day
✨- exfoliate ur lips too! Make ur own white sugar scrub (or buy from LUSH) or use a wet flannel or an old toothbrush n rub very gently
it’s finally back to school time for most of us and, at least for me, it’s also time to start good habits, crack down on the bad ones, and just begin to prepare for the year ahead. i’ve been in school for a couple of weeks now and, so far, i’m doing pretty good. below, i’ve compiled some simple tips that help me in day to day life that i would love to share. so let’s get cracking:
prepare outfits and pack your backpack on sunday instead of in the morning. i know for a fact you have more time on sunday to prepare your outfits and pack your backpack than on monday morning so planning in advance will most definitely benefit you. instead of running around in circles trying to find that shirt, hang them up in the front of your closet or place them in the top of a drawer on sunday. and instead of throwing random pens in a bag, pack your backpack and put it in front of your door. it’ll save you time to do other things such as eating and washing your face.
prepare and eat a breakfast. whether it’s some cherrios in a bag on the way to class or eggs and bacon cooked that morning, eating will definitely benefit you. you’ll have more focus in class and it’ll get your metabolism going. if it’s easier for you, think about preparing your food the night before and packing it in bags or tupperware.
have a tray by the door to put small things in. oh, how many times have i forgotten my earbuds or keys. keep yourself organized and not calling your roommate to get an extra set of keys by just having a tray on which you can put smaller things you don’t put in your backpack. then, just grab them before you leave and voilà! you aren’t locked out.
on sunday, do your meal preps, weekly spread, and clean your room and workspace. i am such a procrastinator during the weekends and there have been so many days that because of that, i am trudging through knee high messes in my room because i just won’t pick up. i also commonly forget to plan the week and prep my meals and then boom, it’s monday and i’m a mess. so don’t be a mess like me, do it all on sunday.
have a letter tray to put class handouts and old assessments so you can put them in binders later. using a letter tray to collect handouts and assessments can be so beneficial to keeping your desk clean. and without it, i tend to throw out old graded assessments i could study instead of putting them in binders. keeping all those papers in one binder is super helpful, so put them in a binder and finals won’t be your doom.
have a bedtime routine. having a bedtime routine can increase your productivity and sleep time because, one, it can help you stay organized and, two, it helps put you to sleep. the more your brain associates doing certain tasks with sleep, the faster you’ll be able to drift off. so be smart and enjoy an extra hour of sleep.
have one journal for in class notes and one to retake and organize your notes at home. in class you do not have time to keep your thoughts organized. with tangents from your teachers and questionable notes, its best to just use a pencil, pen, and highlighter to make scratch notes in class and then come home and organize it into something that you can study from. this idea has kept me afloat time and time again.
talk to your teachers. do yourself a favor, ask and answer questions in class and go to your teachers’ office hours if they have them. if you do this, your teachers are more likely to recognize you and will be more lenient with your grade (since it shows you’re engaged and involved). you don’t necessarily need to like the teacher, just pretend you care. smile and nod along as you ask about their lives, questions about the content, and for advice that you are never going to take. this is a pretty slytherin thing i’ve been doing for years and it has got me so many half points back, especially in math and science.
use quizzes and tests to study for finals. as i stated earlier, it’s important to save your assessments to study, and that is especially true during finals. teachers commonly use similar questions on the final as unit tests and quizzes. think of how many more points you can score on that final if you just study your tests.
make a study group. find friends and people in your classes that you would like to study with and meet up! they’ll definitely be able to help you understand topics and it’ll be more fun than holing yourself up in your room. also, explaining concepts to others will help you better understand them and answer those questions on your tests.
make a weekly to-do list. some of you may already do this in your weekly spreads, but it’s important to make to-do lists of goals and tasks you need to complete. this isn’t necessarily studying and notes but things such as cleaning your room, watering your plants, or going grocery shopping. make lists, organize yourself, don’t be a mess like me.
reward yourself for doing well. whether it’s talking to your teacher or scoring straight a’s, we all work hard. so why not treat yourself to a nice dinner or relaxing bath? have fun, relax, and don’t let yourself get too stressed. remember to unwind.
sit up front in class. i know, i know, you don’t really want to, but think about it. if you’re up front, you are going to be 100% more engaged and paying more attention. and this will make your teacher remember you, which you now know the benefits of. you will also be able to see the board easier, get your questions answered, and hear what is going on.
talk to the people around you in your classes. jeremy from physics sneezes on you and suddenly, you’ve got the flu and can’t make it to your lit lecture. what are you going to do? text that new friend you made from lit that sits next to in the lecture hall of course. simply talking to people on your first day can help you stay on top of class in case you miss or can help you study before the test. never doubt the benefits of knowing people.
if there’s an opportunity for extra credit, take it. i don’t care how good you are in that class or how perfect your grades are, take the extra credit. those few extra points could be the ones that take you from a b to an a. just do it and don’t question it, you may need them.
outline all papers and presentations. you have a draft due for your class in a few hours and you open you computer and prepare to type. but where to begin? what are you writing? how do you want to phrase it? well, you could already know that if you had outlined it. take the time to research, write a thesis, and fully understand your prompt before you write. especially if this is a persuasive essay. do this as well for presentations and visual assignments so you say every fact and point you want to.
keep your test dates by you at all times. no matter who you are, you need to know when tests are coming up. and, as someone who tends to leave things at home sometimes, i may not have my planner with those tests dates next to me when i need them. but what do i have? my phone. i use the app My Study Life to keep track of those dates. i explain that beautiful app in this post.
have a ‘school survival kit.’ by now i think you’ve caught on to the fact i can be a bit forgetful. so i like to have a little bag with me that has things i may need that i could have forgotten. this includes a pen, pencil, highlighter, a few pads, some mints, pain medicine, allergy medicine, tissues, band-aids, hand sanitizer, tide-to-go (stain remover), and other such items. i may make a list of these items at another time.
if you have a question, ask. i’ve already gone over the benefits of talking in class but it’s also extremely important to understand your content. it’s better to ask than not know, even if you think the question is dumb. there’s a good chance someone else has that exact question. it’s also better to look stupid than have that count against you during assessments.
if your university, college, or high school has a writing center, use it. i work in a writing center and we are here to help. we do nothing so much of the time and you coming in makes our day. contrary to the popular opinion, we aren’t going to judge your writing or insult you (unless you ask for it). but we also aren’t going to correct your entire paper, we want to help you learn how to edit your papers and make sure you’re fitting the requirements. and this goes for all tutoring centers; if they’re an option, use them.
