life is all about new experiences

How To Survive College (if I could do it, so can you)

So I’m finally graduating college and I figured I’d made a list of quick survival tips to make everyone’s experience easier. Going into college at 18 can be a complicated experience, especially since it’s normal to still feel insecure at that age about what to do and how to go about this ‘pseudo-adult’ thing. So, here’s what I can share with you new-comers (and not so new) to make your life easier:

  • Avoid 7am classes at (almost) all costs. Look, if you’ve been in Tumblr around long enough you’ve heard about this one, you know we all tell you this is not like High School. It’s all real. You’ll hate yourself and your naiveness every morning of the semester.
    • Exception: if that is the only time you can take that class, make sure to check whether it’ll be offered next semester or whether you might need to credit that course in order to take other ones. Early mornings might be worth it in exchange for not loosing a whole year of classes and struggling in your later semesters.
  • Your health comes first. Seriously. This is not some “Tumblr self-care uwu” thing, it’s very important especially if you wanna do your best in your classes and day to day things. Eat healthy. Hungry students might be prone to just eating whatever they can find or lots of take-out but that will only leave you filling too full and sleepy, you could miss a whole afternoon of doing useful shit because of a bad meal.
  • On that note: eat. No excuses. No “I forgot”. No “I was too busy”. Being hungry makes it harder to concentrate, plus if you’re living away from home you won’t have anyone nagging at you to make sure you’ve eaten. You need to be a grown up and take care of yourself.
  • All-Nighters are the WORST. For real. You don’t realize how important sleep is until it becomes a scarce thing in your life. When you sleep, your brain tosses away useless information, reboots, and most importantly: saves things you’ve learnt into your long-therm memory. So if you spend all night cramming for a test, you’re just wasting time. You didn’t learn shit. Plus, lack of sleep can increase alcohol levels in your blood. So you’ll end up attending to class exhausted, feeling foggy, not remembering shit and drunk-ish. Not good for tests at all.
  • Don’t even give a fuck about popularity. I know, this sounds like something out of The Breakfast Club, but I’m serious. It might have been “a thing” in High School, but in College? No one gives a flying fuck. You’ll notice this mostly with the older students. They are all exhausted, stressed, sleep-deprived and just trying to survive. You might see a guy on his pijamas strolling through campus on a skate board and I promise no one will think “lol what a loser”. Everyone’s thinking “damn I should’ve worn my PJ’s too”. Pretending to be someone you’re not is a damn waste of time and effort.
  • Open up in class. Not in a “tell them all your secrets” kinda way, just be yourself. I know: cheesy. But listen, you’re studying to do what you love —or at least, I hope, what you like— to do. So are the people around you. Which means they may have a lot more in common with you than you might ever dream. By being yourself, you’ll attract others like you and find a cool group of friends who understand you way better than the “we just happened to have a class together” high school friends.
  • Join extracurriculars! This is related to the two previous points. The fastest way to meet new people that are like you —especially in a big college where actually getting to meet people can be hard— is joining an activity. It can be a sport, a club, a student council. It doesn’t matter as long as it’s something you like doing. Believe me, there are a lot more people that share your interests than you might initially think. Especially do this in your first semesters, when you’re likely to have easier classes and more free time to do this kinda stuff. As some one who did a lot of things in the past four years, trust me, I used to see guys you’d go straight home after their classes and they had a lot harder time adapting than those of us with a full schedule of fun stuff.
  • Find time for yourself too. Especially if you’re an introvert, “me time” will be important for your mental health.
  • Exercise. Find time for it. I know an extra hour of studying or lying around might seem more “useful” to you, but stress can be very high at college and it’s a major reason for people to end up failing classes or having a hard time. An hour of exercise every now and then can do wonders for you, especially in finals (even though it might seem it’s harder to find the time in those dates, it’s twice as worth it).
  • Don’t be scared to be alone. Like I mentioned before, popularity doesn’t exist here. You gotta eat alone between classes? No one gives a damn. You need to sit on your computer alone while doing homework at the library? So do tons of people. I knew friends who wouldn’t eat at college unless they found someone to sit down and eat with them too. Honestly? Not worth it.
  • Get to know your teachers. Many of them will show up again later on to give you other classes so knowing how each of them operates will make your life easier. Some teachers care the most about punctuality, some grade creativity over content, some (more than you can imagine) will turn out to be awesome friends.
    • For example: if you have a teacher who is closer to your age, they might be a lot tougher the first few weeks of classes in an attempt to set boundaries with the students and build up respect, work hard at first and they’ll ease up as time goes by.
  • Reach out when you need help. Whether it is to your friends, your parents, your teachers or a counsellor, there are tons of people to give you a hand when you’re struggling academically or personally. Asking when in doubt, or when you need help, will make your life easier than if you try to do everything by yourself.

There’s probably more specific stuff that I’ll post now and then if I remember, but this are the general guidelines I’d give to anyone starting out at college. Finally, my inbox is always open for anyone who wants to reach out and ask stuff about classes, friends, etc. People have come to me before wanting to know how to write essays or study and I’ll try to give the best advice I can.

Good luck! :)

This is the part 2 of Mc’s Cheetah form from a request:

She has been running for miles and miles until she couldn’t see anything familiar anymore. Her new form gave her a new experience in life that she had dreamed for, she could speed away inside the woods and not care about Saeyoung feeling bad and slowing down. To be clear the exact thing was happening again but Seayoung and Saeran were the ones behind.

They have been running for more than 4 hours by now, she can tell by the moon that was shining in the middle of the dark sky.She stopped after a long time in the deep center of the forest every bit of her energy used. She was running all this time and only stopped to hear the howling coming from the very far end of the forest.

Saeran and Saeyoung had a big struggle keeping up with MC. Saeyoung in one point was so scared that MC might be lost because they haven’t been this deep into the forest with her but Saeran reassured him that she is more than capable of finding the path home.

MC stopped besides the lake close to their house. She couldn’t even find the energy to stand. She fell sideways on the ground, panting really hard. The twins were not too far away, Saeran was the first on the sense MC’s sent not moving, he howled and informed his brother and soon after run in the direction of the sent.

They made it and the first thing Saeyoung noticed was his wife lying on the ground. In no time he was besides her, worry took over him too soon. He transoformed back to his human form and shook MC body “Hey MC are you OK” he took her head into his hands and stroke it. She slowly opened her eyes and looked up at him. Saeran moved besides his brother and peeked at MC. It didn’t take him long to understand that she was just exhausted, she just got the form a few hours ago. “She is fine, it looks like she is just tired.” Saeran said, transforming back, and ruffled his hair, getting the leaves and sticks out.

Saeyoung looks at his brother and then back at MC. She licked his face to wide away the worried look on his face and created a smile. “We should go back, Yoosung will be worried.” Saeran patted her stomach and stood up. He started walking back but didn’t hear footsteps behind him. Saeyoung was still behind, crouching besides MC as she struggled and twitched. He groaned and walked back.

MC tried moving but couldn’t, it was like something was holding her down. Then she tried transforming into a human but didn’t know how. She tried concentrating but nothing was working. She panicked, she breathing becoming faster with every second. Saeyoung had been observing her. She soon started meowing loudly he pressed a hand on her chest and back, keeping her still. “what’s going on?” Saeran asked, a faint worried look in his face and his eyes glued on the big cat. “I don’t think she can transform back.” he looked looked back at Saeran while speaking.

“Let’s try standing her up.” Saeran suggested and walked to the other side of MC. He slides a hand under her hip as Saeyoung slides his under her chest. “On three. One, two, three!” groaning, they both pushed MC on her legs. Her head handing low, her tail not moving. Soon her legs started shaking badly until she crushed painfully into the ground beneath her. “Oh God, this is bad.” Saeyoung rubbed his forehead sighing.

“There is only one solution.” Saeran said and stood up, his gaze shifting from MC to Saeyoung. “You are going to carry her.” he said and started moving towards the path leading home. “What?! ME!? Do you know how heavy she is?!” he screamed to Saeran’s naked back. “Ouch!?” he felt a paw hit him hard in the thigh and a low growl echo behind him. “Ok, Ok sorry.” he murmured and crouched in front of her.

“I swear to GOD I am eating the chips but you are getting heavier.” Seayoung whispered harshly and fixed his hands on her but and back. MC was hugging him like a koala, the only difference is the size. Saeran snored at the comment and felt glad that he wan’t the one carrying her. While Saeyoung was struggling on walking she was weakly licking the side of his face and neck, thanking him for helping her.

They arrived to the back of the house, were their clothes are. “Let’s lay her inside first.” Saeran opened the door and let Saeyoung inside first. They entered the living room but found it empty, Yoosung must be sleeping by now. “Here” Saeran moved the coffee table to make room on the floor. “Now help me lay her down.” Saeyoung stated and slowly let his brother support the upper half of MC’s body. they gently laid her down, she was too tired to even keep her eyes open. She only shifted her legs and fell asleep. The twins went outside to take their clothes and go to sleep.

~Meanwhile~

“O-M-G he is going to kiiiiiill me!” Yoosung said panicked as he passed back and forth in  front of the open window, the window from were MC escaped. He was been calling even screaming her name but she didn’t come back yet. Worry ate him from the inside. He looked at the clock for the millionth time by now and with every second the situation was getting worse.“How am I supposed to tel him? Oh hey your wife escaped into the woods naked and hasn’t returned yet but don’t worry if we call the animal shelter they might find her.” he said to himself with sarcasm.

He sighed and headed to the living room, he noticed the lights were on. He remembers them being off but he isn’t too sure after such a long time. Rubbing his eyes he walked past the couch only to feel something soft under his foot and a quiet meow right after. He lifted his fool and say a tail but the colors didn’t match to the colors he used to know. His eyes followed up the tail and his eyes widen as a big sized cat focuses into his view, sleeping calmly on the floor.

Saeran and Saeyoung were gathering their clothes as a loud high pinched scream echoed from inside the house. They looked at each other and run inside. The scene they found is a pale Yoosung with wide eyes glue into MC who has her head lifted looking back at him. Saeran ran to Yoosung and held his shoulders. “T-There is a-a che-” Saeran shook his shoulders gently “Hey calm down everything is OK” “B-But the-there is” “Shh..” Yoosung was shaking but Saeran held him close. He took a peek where Saeyoung was calming down MC, stroking her fur.

“So this is MC’s new form?” yoosung asked as he was looking at the big cat sleeping soundly besides his legs. “Yeah, I don’t really understand how it happened.” Saeyoung smiled softly as he gazes at MC. “Then what are we going to do? If she doesn’t know how to transform back then it might get dangerous” Saeran nodded to Yoosung’s words. “For now the only thing I want is sleep.” Saeyoung sighed and rubbed his eyes under his glasses. “Right” Saeran looked at the clock. He took Yoosung’s hand and told Saeyoung goodnight.

Saeyoung was still in the living room with MC. “Now I will have to care you, won’t I?” he sighed  lifting his butt of the couch. He crouched into the floor and was welcomed with a soft purring from his small kitty cat. He chuckled and took her into his arms. Even if he complained about her size and weight he was mesmerized about this form and even more curious about the history of where did it come from.

he opened his bedroom door and say the window open pared with MC’s clothes laying on the floor, underneath the window but that wasn’t important now. Now the important part is how do they sleep. He decided to sleep on the floor. He laid the extra matres they had besides the bed while he let MC take the whole bed. it was really late, the sun was slowly rising but he still couldn’t sleep, his eyes glued on the majestic creature on the bed. Sleep eventually won and his eyes slowly closed. He didn’t even fully close his eyes and a noise woke him up.

The springs of the bed started poping, like some weigh was lifted. He sat up and looked at te bed but there wasn’t a big cat anymore but a beautiful woman, sleeping soundly. He smiled and climbed into the bed, hugging the figure close to his chest but didn’t forget to cover her. He couldn’t fall asleep more happy.

I know you’re in pain. It hurts in ways you can’t even begin to describe and even if you could, no one seems to want to listen. Sure, people care and try to help… for a time… but when you don’t seem to be getting any better, after a while, they get tired of listening… Eventually it becomes easier to keep it all inside.
I know you feel like it will never get better and you’ll never be okay again. It’s been like this for so long now that you think if things were ever going to change they would have by now so this is how it’s always going to be… but it’s not. I promise it’s not. You learn cope, it just takes time and I know it feels like you’ve given it enough time already but not everyone heals at the same pace.
Tell yourself it’s okay to feel the way that you do. Nobody else on this earth has lived through your life to be in any kind of position to understand your battles. Nobody else but you has walked in your shoes to be any kind of comparison on how you should be feeling right now or whether or not you should be ‘better’. I won’t lie to you – what you’re going through will always leave its mark upon you as any trauma does – and that’s normal too. Nobody looks back on a traumatic life experience and giggles about it… But it’s this all-consuming depressive state… these overwhelming feelings you can’t control… the way those feelings isolate you and make you feel vulnerable and alone – THAT is what won’t last forever.
It DOES get better… you DO find acceptance. Not all at once – its gradual… like a stormy day or a long dark night… you don’t just blink and suddenly it’s a blue sky. Storm clouds part slowly, allowing brief flashes of sunlight at first… then eventually disappear… Dark nights end slowly as a new day begins to dawn… Acceptance is the same… and I know you have the courage to wait for it…
A Complete Guide to Ilvermorny

Created by myself and my lovely fellow analyst.

What Ilvermorny Means

This section focuses on the bare bones of each house. Later I expand in great depth on the specific combinations.

Wampus:
Pragmatism. The Wampus wants real world results. It wants things that can assist these results. It will take real, immediate action to achieve these results. Oriented towards events, the exterior world, and action. Searches for advantage in everything. Searches for ways to win. Competition, winning, the real world. Proof. Logic. Action.
Horned Serpent:
Theories. The world aligns with their system of thought. Why is the world this way? What if it isn’t? The horned serpent considers everything. They scrutinize and analyze. They make the world fit their mind and make their mind for the world. Oriented toward the internal world. Thinking about things for their own sake. No objective but understanding.
Pukwudgie:
Pukwudgies are what they are. They want to be themselves in all respects, extroverting themselves on the outer world. They are in tune with their own emotions and will follow their gut instincts and feelings wherever they might lead. They have a strong emotional attachment to those they value, and will stay extremely loyal to those select few. Pukwudgies are social without Boeing to society.
Thunderbird:
Change. The grand concept of the soul. The thunderbird wants change for its internal world. It wishes to be free in its thoughts and it’s desires, pretty much regardless of the outside world. The thunderbird seeks betterment for itself in subjective ways. It does not want to win, it wants to be happy.

Hogwarts/Ilvermorny Combinations

This section focuses on each individual house combination.

Pukwudgie/Hogwarts

The Hero (Gryffindor)

The Traveler (Ravenclaw)

The Loyalist (Hufflepuff)

The Charmer (Slytherin)

Gryffindor/Pukwudgie:
These people are the typical thrill seeking freedom fighters of Gryffindor. The social nature of Pukwudgie combines with the glory seeking bravado of Gryffindor to make a person who sees themselves as a hero, and is eager to act accordingly. Gryffindor Pukwudgies are often more attuned to their own wants and the wants of their friends then anything grander. They prefer not to look at the big picture, and instead focus on small situations where they can apply themselves with vigor and individuality. Gryffindor and Pukwudgie are both individualistic and emotional houses, and this manifests particularly strongly in this combination. The Gryffindor is action oriented and the Pukwudgie is social, creating someone who is outspoken and willing to stick to their emotional decisions to the bitter end.

Ravenclaw/Pukwudgie: The Ravenclaw Pukwudgie is primarily concerned with the exploration of the world. The Ravenclaw is insatiably curious, and the Pukwudgie sees the world externally, without becoming preoccupied with the structure of the world or what they can and cannot do. The two houses in combination seek to fully enjoy life, seeking out new knowledge and experiences without very much of an end goal. These people seek to enjoy their life above all else, and will likely have a drive to see the world, try new and exciting things, and will not have patience for those who drag them down to a more boring world.

Hufflepuff/Pukwudgie: The Hufflepuff Pukwudgie is devoted to its friends and family. It will make sure they are happy and healthy above all else, and will define their lives by those they care about. They are more focused on themselves as individuals then the traditional Hufflepuff, who seeks to make things fair for the general world. These Hufflepuffs instead prefer to stay within the circle of those that they love and rarely stray from it. These Pukwudgies will be more selfless and able to dismiss their own emotions easier than most because of their acute awareness of the affect it has on others.

Slytherin/Pukwudgie: Slytherin Pukwudgies are naturals at making connections and thrive in the social world. Their ambition is driven from emotional need, and will often be less traditionally ambitious than the dreams of other Slytherins. They will want to succeed in a social or emotional way, more intangible than the power and wealth many Slytherins seek. They will seek prestige in their social circle, using their quick wits to charm their fellows. They are highly external people, loving the company and positivity of social gatherings and becoming highly adept at navigating such settings.

Wampus/Hogwarts

The Champion (Gryffindor)
The Trickster (Ravenclaw)
The Paragon (Hufflepuff)
The Victor (Slytherin)

Gryffindor/Wampus: Wampus Gryffindors are the most in tune with the real world of Gryffindors. They see the real world problems with constantly sticking to their morals and emotions, and will be willing to change their decisions and adapt to whatever will yield the greatest benefit. This combination is extremely action oriented, often becoming restless when there is no danger for them to face or situation to mend. These will be the most competitive of all Gryffindors, eager to jump on any casual opportunity to show others what they can do. This is the result of the glory seeking nature of Gryffindor combined with the Wampus drive to win. While this combination is highly impulsive and strong willed, it’s logical side and desire to succeed often makes it more detached than most Gryffindors until the opportunity for action arises. This combination will look for logical and analytical reasons why it won or did not win, and thus will often seem changeable, as it is reviewing new data and analyzing while it is taking action. It’s looking at the same time as it’s leaping.

Ravenclaw/Wampus: The Ravenclaw Wampus is the rarest of all sixteen combinations. Understandable as it is a paradoxical personality. Strong willed with malleable beliefs and goals, active with a tendency to hang back and consider all options, and intellectual but fierce. This combination deals in cleverness more than any other type of intellect. It prefers wit and strategy in its thoughts and conversations to a less immediately applicable, more studious knowledge. The introspective nature of Ravenclaw combines with Wampus in two principle ways, first with its competitiveness and its drive to succeed, which makes the Ravenclaw Wampus self critical and keenly aware of its own strengths and weaknesses. Secondly, the introspection combines with the strength of Wampus to create an impassive exterior. This Wampus will conceal its weaknesses behind a thick veil of intellect and prestige.

Hufflepuff/Wampus: The Hufflepuff Wampus has tangible goals that it wants to succeed in, and has a strong drive like other Wampuses, however, this will be offset by their affection for their companions and their wish for these people to succeed as much, if not more, than themself. This manifests as a person who is a strong and charismatic community leader. They will drive groups of people forward highly effectively with an infectious optimism and tireless determination. Both the Wampus and the Hufflepuff houses are hard working houses with great amounts of grit. As a result, the combination will take on massive amounts of work for greater projects with incredible drive. This is a self sacrificing combination with a strong sense of right and wrong, based primarily around justice and fairness. They will fight tirelessly to achieve this fairness in any place they can.

Slytherin/Wampus: The Slytherin and Wampus houses are defined by ambition. Slytherin values ambition deeply, and Wampus’ interaction with the world is based around fighting and winning. As a result, the Slytherin Wampus feels that it must achieve its goals at all costs, and overwhelmingly does so. This type is highly adaptable within the margins of its goals, as it sees many ways it can get what it wants, and has no issue buckling down to what work is necessary. While in true Slytherin nature, it is focused on the end goal at all times, the scrappiness and engagement with the present moment that Wampus brings leads this combination to be more playful than other Slytherins. These Slytherins are so constantly ambitious and secure in their desire that they feel comfortable dropping their seriousness whenever it appeals to them. At the same time, the Slytherin Wampus sees no point in becoming too preoccupied with the negative aspects of the here and now, and has a tendency to “wait out” annoyances, emotional problems, or pain.

Thunderbird/Hogwarts

The Revolutionary (Gryffindor)
The Philosopher (Ravenclaw)
The Optimist (Hufflepuff)
The Candidate (Slytherin)

Gryffindor/Thunderbird: Gryffindor Thunderbird has deeply internalized its moral beliefs. It is guided by its principals and ideals. The contrast in between Thunderbirds vibrant internal world and Gryffindors strong external tendencies make a combination that is powerfully focused on carrying its beliefs into the outside world. This combination makes no compromises. It is resilient against outside influence, and most powerful when faced with impossible odds. In the face of everyone telling it “no”, it plants it’s feet and screams “yes” in response. This Gryffindor is the least boastful an glory seeking of Gryffindors, as it cares very little for the the outside world. It deeply connects to those who share its beliefs however, and will stick to these long lived friendships through any situation, no matter how thick or thin.

Ravenclaw/Thunderbird: The Ravenclaw Thunderbird seeks enlightenment. Regardless of its religious views or what words they might use to describe what they seek, the Ravenclaw Thunderbird wishes to reach a state of complete happiness and knowledge. Both Ravenclaw and Thunderbird constantly seek out something, deep in their core. The Ravenclaw seeks many new ideas, whereas the Thunderbird seeks a single great ideal. In combination, these houses search for all ways they might achieve their final ideal (note: not their final GOAL, the ideal is generally something unattainable. The Ravenclaw Thunderbird considers it nobler to strive for the impossible.) This house will be as curious as the traditional Ravenclaw, but it’s deep held beliefs as a Thunderbird will lead it to dismiss more information than its more trusting and open minded fellows. Ultimately, their greatest priority is enlightenment and whatever else they may have chosen as a panultimate ideal.

Hufflepuff/Thunderbird: The Hufflepuff Thunderbird is probably the greatest source of Hufflepuff’s reputation of being offbeat. The Thunderbird devotion to its internal world mixes with the upbeat attitude of Hufflepuff to create a person who is extremely amiable and easygoing without feeling the need to fit in or act in a way they feel uncomfortable with. This Hufflepuff is more secure in their identity than other Hufflepuffs, and this Thunderbird is more secure in their present situation than other Thunderbirds. This makes a sweet spot of contentment where the Hufflepuff Thunderbird makes it’s home.

Slytherin/Thunderbird: Of the Slytherins, this combination is the deepest emotionally. It does not find the same advantage of repressing its emotions that the other houses do. Instead, this house propels itself through its ambitions with a deep emotional drive to thrive I whatever environment it is put in. The forceful confidence of Slytherin gives this Thunderbird a tendency to hurl themselves into happiness and freedom, acting however they might please. This gives them a forceful and individualistic charisma, but makes them enemies as they can come off as a bull in a china shop when surrounded by weaker personalities. This Slytherin plans ahead less than other Slytherins. It has it’s eventual goals in mind, but it trusts in its ability to improvise with all the cunning and determination it possesses once it comes into contact with an actual impediment.

Horned Serpent/Hogwarts

The Advocate (Gryffindor)
The Visionary (Ravenclaw)
The Psychologist (Hufflepuff)
The Architect (Slytherin)

Gryffindor/Horned Serpent: The Gryffindor Horned Serpent is the fiercest of the Horned Serpents and the most conservative and cautious of the Gryffindors. They have strong held ideas that they reenforce with a powerful will and as much mental energy as they can muster. However, these Gryffindors are aware of the consequences to their actions, and will act in a more refined way, only breaking rules or taking direct action when they see it as good to do so. They will not, however, hesitate to challenge any idea put forward, examining it from both moral and logical standpoints. This combination has a highly tuned moral framework that builds itself on sequences of logic in order to determine what is right. These Horned Serpents are less interested in discovery, experimentation, and hypothesizing than most of their brethren. The Gryffindor in them prefers to take what is established knowledge so that they can act in the moment and will not have to shift their belief system, which is dependent on information. This combination will project themselves as the most prominent mind in the room. They often do not project the pure and quiet intelligence of Ravenclaw combinations or the calculated charisma of Slytherin, but the use of Gryffindor’s indomitable will and Horned Serpents uncontainable mind forces the attention of those nearby. People are drawn to this combination, and it uses this ability to advocate its ideas.

Ravenclaw/Horned Serpent: This combinations mind is completely active. It thinks constantly, developing and discarding ideas and theories at a consummate rate. The quick mindedness of the Ravenclaw allows it to see multiple ideas and possible ways to see a situation at once. At the same time, the Horned Serpent focuses these many ideas, narrowing down those that are illogical and discardable. This combination is fully involved with its mind. Its intelligence propels it in everything it does, shaping its values, shifting its actions. What the Ravenclaw Horned Serpent does will always be to the benefit of knowledge and its own understanding. It will seek the analysis and dissection of the entire world, magnifying every notion as far as it reasonably can. This combination balances a scale in its own mind. On one hand, it enjoys the pure information of chaos, but on the other, the rationality of both houses wants stability. The Ravenclaw Horned Serpent makes its compromise through observation. It will sit still and accumulate knowledge until it sees there is something to be gained for their mind if they move. They will then throw themselves headlong into whatever pursuit they have deemed smart.

Hufflepuff/Horned Serpent: The Hufflepuff Horned Serpent seeks to understand people. It will study someone in all their intricacies, looking to their likes, dislikes, beliefs, motives, and everything else try can glean. This combination loves people as truly as most Hufflepuffs do, but is truly fascinated by them as a Horned Serpent. Hufflepuff’s patience combines with the theories of Horned Serpent to form principles over time. This combination will slowly accumulate similar ideas, slowly turn them over, combine them where they can be combined, and eventually form well fleshed out principles that it can share compassionately with those in need. This combination values wisdom above all else. It wishes to guide others in a subjective manner. Helping them with their minds and their ideas. The strong inclination to fairness that Hufflepuff brings overpowers the wish for personal understanding that Horned Serpent holds dearly. This combination will, as a result, share what it knows indiscriminately. It wishes the world to be better mentally and to be supplied with guiding wisdom that will keep it safe.

Slytherin/Horned Serpent: The Slytherin Horned Serpent wants to build. While it is receptive to the many ideas of the world, it prefers its own. It will be strongly oriented towards order, categories, and rules. These are where the Slytherin ambition and the structured minds of the Horned Serpents thrive. Within this structure, it will create more and more structure, expanding it and pushing the boundaries of the previous rules, before forming new rules and guidelines in a more refined manner. This combination is proud, trusting its own intellect and intuition above all else. Its logic being that they are tried and true indicators. This makes the Slytherin Horned Serpent stubborn minded until failure. At the point of failure, this combination will see no problem admitting that they were wrong and pursuing an entirely different approach. The ambition of Slytherin drives it forward towards a goal or a principle to understand, while the Horned Serpent studies and searches for the best way to achieve such an end.

~*~Sellieve’s Moon Sign Interpretations!~*~

Moon in Aries: You impulsively act on your feelings without thinking them through. You need adventure in order to feel complete. You are moodiest when you feel impatient. Very passionate and deliberate. Straight and to the point, you prefer not to dwell on or analyze your feelings.  Precocious, eager to get going in their pursuits.  A strong sense of autonomy, insistent on doing things on their own, a lust for independence.

Moon in Taurus: When provoked, you become stubborn and hardheaded. You have a hard time understanding the feelings of others. You can get stuck in emotional ruts, but what’s good about this is the fact that it gives you determination. Various smells, tastes, textures, sights, and sounds have more of an effect on your mood than they do for other people. Your emotions are less fickle than anyone. Once you feel a certain way about a person or situation, it is unlikely that you will change.  An emotional need for affection, you love to be touched.

Moon in Gemini: You feel the need to talk about your feelings and get it all figured out on a mental level. Indecisive, you understand both sides of a story and often feel strongly about more than one opinion on an issue. Acting shallow, letting loose, and seeing things from a lighthearted point of view helps you become emotionally at ease. Sometimes viewed as inconsiderate, you have a hard time understanding why others keep their feelings secret. When provoked, you try to weasel your way out of the situation. You consider all possibilities before making up your mind. You are moodiest when you have gone a long time without having fun.

Moon in Cancer: This is the moon’s favorite position, as Cancer is ruled by the moon. You are lovey-dovey, touchy-feely, affectionate, soft spoken, sensitive, nurturing, gentle, considerate, motherly, but whiny at times. You are ruled by your emotions and have difficulty seeing things objectively. You have a need to feel needed and love being a shoulder to cry on. You love deeply, laugh wholeheartedly, and sadness stings you more painfully than it does for others. You are clingy and have a hard time letting go of old feelings. You are guarded and might not show how emotional you truly are.

Moon in Leo: You have an emotional need to have your ego stroked. You can fill a room with your presence and enjoy being the center of attention. When you feel passionately about something, you express it with full enthusiasm. You are not one to keep their feelings private. Some may view you as demanding, others admire the fact that you really know who you are and aren’t afraid to show it. You are dedicated at getting what you want.

Moon in Virgo: Little things tend to set you off, and you notice things more than others would. You can be thoughtful and nurturing, but cynical as well. You feel like your good deeds go unnoticed, but you give appreciation to other peoples’ favors more than many would. You really think through your feelings before acting on them; you feel that you must analyze your feelings to get them perfectly figured out, then you tell people exactly what you feel. Sometimes you get bogged down in details and miss the bigger picture. Men who have moon in Virgo are in touch with their feminine side. Sometimes the fact that you are considerate of others’ feelings gets in the way of pursuing what you want.

Moon in Libra: You have an emotional need to be balanced and to please other people. Against separatism, you strive to make everyone feel included and comfortable around you. You will refrain from speaking up about how you feel out of fear of disturbing someone else. You can be resentful as you often put your own needs on the back burner to help someone else. You are indecisive about how you feel but after collecting enough information, your opinions are stronger than anyone else’s. You care about what other people think of you and try to be as fair as possible. You use your charm to get what you want. You are pretty good at seeing the bigger picture but often miss important details.

Moon in Scorpio: You are emotionally intense and occasionally you erupt. You feel the need to get down to the bottom of an issue, finding the very source of a conflict. You use your emotions to give your life more meaning. You are annoyed by shallow people and prefer to view everything from a deeper perspective. You lack the ability to be carefree as you thrive on feeling everything to the extreme. You are not afraid to face the more painful things in life, and you prefer to heal yourself from the inside out rather than cover up the surface of a problem.  When people hurt you, it leaves a deep impression on you, and you have trouble forgiving or forgetting.

Moon in Sagittarius: Emotionally, you are all over the place and unstable. Trying new foods and broadening your horizons fills your explorative heart. You have an emotional need for action, adventure, and freedom. You have this “go go go” attitude and other people tell you to slow down. When you feel passionately about something, some people may perceive you to be radical. You are open about how you feel, to the point that people see you as tactless. Nothing can extinguish your flaming enthusiasm and zest for life!

Moon in Capricorn: You take your feelings to the next level, always wanting to experience them at full complexity. You have supreme sensibility and logic that keeps you emotionally stable. You like to be seen as sophisticated, and so you often hide your passion and intensity behind a well composed, serious disposition, and well-crafted speech. You thoroughly contemplate your feelings before acting on them; you feel that you must analyze your feelings to get them perfectly figured out, then you tell people exactly what you feel. Some people who have moon in Capricorn ignore their emotions all together, for the sake of practicality, while other people with moon in Capricorn are the most emotional people you know, whether or not they show it –or even admit it to themselves! You have been wounded so many times to the point that you have grown to have thick skin, and get annoyed by people who are overly touchy. You have an “it is what it is” attitude and will tell the cold hard truth without sugarcoating.

Moon in Aquarius: Having your uniqueness stroked makes you feel fulfilled. Inspired by science and literature that has morals, you enjoy an intellectual challenge! You have a rebellious streak to fight for what is right. You rationalize the way you feel, a few friends of mine born with moon in Aquarius write what they feel in order to make sense of it. You prefer to view things objectively. You may have a hard time understanding the way others feel as you can be quite opinionated. You are good at thinking outside the box and seeing a situation in a new light.

Moon in Pisces: You have an emotional need to just go with the flow, meaning that you will act based on whatever feels right at the time, without analyzing the possibilities or considering the outcome. Though you are easily hurt, you are good at letting go and getting on with life. Others see you as hard to hold onto or pin down in a situation. Your personality is hard to fully grasp, even you aren’t sure of yourself. Your emotions are almost never concrete, you tend to change your mind and you are easily influenced by others. This makes you very agreeable and easy to talk to, but spineless. Very conflict-avoidant and evasive, you have a hard time facing your fears or having conversations that require you to be honest about your feelings. You feel like your good deeds go unnoticed and that you get walked all over, because it is hard for you to stick up for yourself. You have a lovely imagination and intuition.

Hi! My husband and I are expecting our first child in September, and that got me thinking about pregnant Shadowhunters, how they train, how they deal with the wonderful and (not so wonderful) experiences of pregnancy and such. I have read ALL your series (several times!) since they first came out, and I loved that I feel like they grew with me. Hence, at this new stage of my life, I was wondering if you could share any fun thoughts about pregnant Shadowhunter characters. Thank you!

Congratulations!

A pregnant Shadowhunter would never forget their Endurance runes during labor, or of course the protection spell for the baby when they’re born! In general, pregnant Nephilim keep training - and we know from Charlotte that for a good amount of time, they keep fighting! In later months, they need specialized maternity light armor since they won’t fit into their usual clothes by the end. But remember lots of plain old humans fight real wars while pregnant. And win. And if you don’t know the story of Macha, one of my favorite goddesses, check it out:

Creating Dynamic Characters That Feel Real

Despite what people may have led you to believe, the plot or structure is not the most important thing about your story–whether it’s a screenplay, short story, novel. That’s not what makes the story real and important. That’s not why your readers care.

Characters are the most important part of your story. Without them, you have nothing. Your story is nothing.

If you want your readers to find your story complex, compelling, and dynamic, then your characters have to be complex, compelling, and dynamic. You’re thinking, “Oh, that’s easy. I’ve already done that.” Your babies are complicated. They’re beautiful but damaged. Intelligent but socially awkward. They want to be an astronaut; they want to save the world.

Sorry, but you’re full of shit.

Characters aren’t just characters, they’re real people, even if they only exist in ink and paper and your mind rather than in flesh and blood. They need to be as real to your readers as their mother, father, best friend, the person sitting next to them. Otherwise, you have failed. Flesh them out, bring them to life on the page.

Your characters are the heart and soul of your story, and you need to treat them as such. That is your job as a writer. And when you don’t do that, you not only fail your readers and your story, you not only do yourself a great disservice, but you also expose yourself. You reveal something to your readers that you don’t want them to know. As Claudia Hunter Johnson says in her book, Crafting Short Screenplays That Connect (which is an excellent book I recommend you all read), character creation is “an artistic and ethical issue.”

Repeat after me: It is an artistic and ethical issue.

You smoothed down your robes, watching the countryside zip past the small windows of the Hogwarts Express. You were only 11 years old, excited and feeling prepared for your first year at the amazing “school of witchcraft and wizardry”. It had been a dream come true when your letter had arrived. Your parents were just regular people, or “muggles” as all the other witches and wizards called them, so they had thought that the letter was a prank or something when you’d first received it. But as you’d pulled out the piece of parchment and read what was written in the curly green inked handwriting, you knew that it was no joke. It felt too right and explained too much.

Being Muggleborn, you knew absolutely no one on this train. It was the one thing you were worried about at this school. You knew that you would be fine with keeping your grades up, and you weren’t even scared of getting lost, but you’d only found out you were a witch less than two months ago. How were you going to fit in here? The others would’ve surely been raised to expect a life at this school since they were tiny, so would they really accept someone as clueless as you? You’d read up on as much as you could about the school and about magic before you came here so you hoped that you knew enough to at least appear like you were well-versed in all things magical.

Despite all of this you were determined to approach this new experience with zero concerns. You were confident it would turn out okay, so you decided to focus on how amazing all this was. You couldn’t wait to get there, but there was still a long way to go before you reached Hogwarts – you’d really only just left the station. You were fairly sure that you were allowed to have stayed in your normal clothing for a while longer but you were too excited to put on your new robes to wait. You eyed the logo on the front of your robes happily, a small smile appearing on your lips. You were really going. It wasn’t all some crazy dream.

The doors to your carriage opened suddenly and you jumped, looking up to see who it was. There was an Asian boy standing in the opening, a lazy smile on his face. From this distance both his hair and his eyes looked jet black, even darker than his robes. His skin looked white as sugar in stark contrast to the rest of these dark colours. He looked almost like some kind of demon, but you couldn’t recall ever reading about them in any of your textbooks. You made a mental note to look that up once you reached the school and had access to the library. You saw that under his robes his body was slim but at this young age there was still a little leftover baby fat in his cheeks, making him look far less intimidating than you’d originally thought. Those black eyes watched you from where he stood, one hand still resting on the door to the carriage.

How to tell if you’re in an Anne Rice novel
  1. God has abandoned you. You’re fine with it. Really.
  2. You are a supernatural creature, and if not, you are swept up in a passion so otherworldly and consuming you may as well be.
  3. You take huge revelations, shocks, and life changes pretty much in stride and don’t waste time resisting the unknown. The unknown might be a vampire or a new sexual experience or a grand international adventure, but most probably it’s all three.
  4. You are strangely intimate with all your acquaintances and go on for pages about how beautiful they are. If you are male, It will come to light by your own casual admission that you have gone to bed with an older but still handsome and always disarming male friend of the family. You will call it making love. But no homo.
  5. Everyone around you is exchanging needful touches and tender glances like this is a softcore porn novel. Wait, is it?
  6. You swoon, cry, and pine an awful lot.
  7. At some point in the narrative, you will end up in an ornate Catholic church and be filled with a sense of nostalgia and longing and existential angst.
  8. You are really not okay with the apparent fact that God has abandoned you. You secretly hope you are still worthy of His love.
  9. You spend at least 20% of the narrative in New Orleans, probably the Garden District.
Terms of Endearment.

got7 reactions: married life.

HERE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG I HAVE BEEN VERY SIDETRACKED, BUT HERE IT IS NOW AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT. TELL ME WHAT YOU THOUGHT.

ALSO I AM ALWAYS LOOKING TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS SO DONT HESITATE TO MESSAGE ME AND AS ALWAYS MY REQUEST BOX IS OPEN.

JB: married life with Jaebum in my opinion would be very domestic. Dinner together every night, or as many nights as he can. Breakfast together at the dining table, date nights on the weekends, buying furniture and going grocery shopping together JB strikes me as someone who would kill for all those marriage life he sees on TV. He strikes me as someone who wants the normal stuff and enjoys it. Cooking together and sleeping in each other’s arms every night, he would want it all.

Mark: married life with mark, my lord I can picture it already (*cough* not my bias or anything *cough *) married life with mark would be serene and peaceful. He would want to pamper and take care of his lovely wife, little surprises here and there, cooking for her, drawing her a bath. But also it would be water gun fights in the house and pushing her in the pool. Dragging her out to a different adventure every time. Raising coco together and maybe get another dog.

Jinyoung: married life with Jinyoung would be very romantic and domestic, kind of like JB. He seems very traditional and it feels like his married life would be the same. Date night, romantic dinner in candlelight, cheesy romantic gestures, rose petals on the bed with candles all around when he forgot an anniversary or a date. Drawing you a bubble bath and joining you to give you a massage when you tell him you had a long day. Overall romantic and traditional.

Jackson: this man was made to be a husband (*cough * right Lisa @jisawang *cough *) he would be the protective kind. Always making sure his wife was okay and healthy and would pamper her every chance he got, which would end up being every other day. He would try to rope her into his workout sessions, which all depending on his S/O would be either very easy or very hard. He would want to have romantic nights making sure you know how much he loves you *wink wink * and other times he would come home frustrated and just pin you to the wall. Married life with Jackson will be praises and adoration from him and from you, reminding him of what a beautiful talented man he is whenever he starts doubting.

Youngjae: oh my sweet sweet child, my little sunshine. Married life would be just that; sunshine. Everyday would be so bright and joyful he would make sure you are always happy and smiling. (Which would be hard not to cause that angels smile would be contagious.) He would be so caring and attentive to you. He would want to sing you to sleep to you every night or really every chance he got. Cooking in the kitchen; sing, cleaning the house; sing, taking a shower; sing. You would be blessed with that boys vocals everyday. He would probably get a dog in the first few months of your married life, if you didn’t have one already. He would be very playful, going out to the park, the beach, the pool, amusement park you name it, if you can play and have maximum fun, you bet your ass you are doing it. I just love that boy so much, CHERISH HIM!

Bambam: okay dabdab. Dear lord I hope you like memes. That boy would want you guys to always be trendy. Follow every new Internet trend, fashion trend, food trend; you name it, if its top 10 you are making your life about it. He is a fashionista so life with him would always be fashionable. He will probably drag you shopping every week, so if you don’t like shopping like myself, brace yourselves, and learn to love it cause its gonna be a big part of your life. He would be very playful, cracking jokes, playing pranks, teasing. Your house life wouldn’t be domestic per say but it will never be boring.  You would be in bed getting ready to sleep and end up both laughing so hard you have tears running down your face. Bambam would always make sure you were happy, and would find a way to make it up to you if you had a fight or forgot a date. Married life with Bambam would be silly jokes and all the trends he can find and a lot of laughs, there will never be a dull moment.

Yugyeom: okay this little bunny, this sinful bunny am I right ladies no? Okay lets just get right to it. Married life with this bun would be giggly, let me explain. This boy is pretty much shy no matter what he lets on, on stage. So even though you guys would be married it would be whole new experience for him. Even if you have been living together prior, for him it will feel like the first time all over again. He is gonna be excited for everything with you. Late nights of him showing you a new choreography, boasting to his hyungs when you make him lunch, eating breakfast together and supper would be the things he will be very serious about. Spending as much time as possible with each other and making sure you are eating. He would be a flirt, now when I say flirt I mean just with you. He would flirt just like the very first day he met you. He would feel excited about getting into the domestic life and would be extra on all those ordinary things married couples do. Married life with Yugyeom will be somewhat innocent and pure but also exciting and safe. You will never feel insecure or unstable cause he will make sure of it. *whispers * protect him*

Horoscopes by Gil Hizon - Week of April 2-8, 2017

Look, queen…

ARIES (March 21 – April 19)

Okay, so you’re like, on a different wavelength than the rest of us this week. This is usually the time (for some reason) where bitches are running around frantic with the amount of overwhelming shit they have to do, but you’re all like, “Spring Break, WOOOOOO!” Look, queen, we want you to keep going with that, but maybe don’t be so fucking overt about it. Some of us have to work.
=====

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)

So a big change is set to happen in your life within a few months, and if it was any other bitch, the normal reaction would be a huge freakout. But not you. You’re a fucking sea of calm. I mean more power to you, but this mode is making others uncomfortable. In looking at chu, these other hos may think that you just don’t give a rats ass how your big change could affect them. Look queen, it’s not your nature to cater to the other gurls, but at least just let them know that you care about what’s coming.
=====

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)

People recognize and respect your ability to formulate theories and your willingness to keep an open mind. But sometimes, bitches just want to know what you really think without you referencing all these fancy fucking anecdotes you keep in your mental arsenal. Look, queen, hos are overwhelmed right now. When they ask you a question, be direct. B. E. Direct.
=====

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

Sometimes, the more you plan your week, the more disappointed you get when things take fucking longer than expected. It’s stressful enough to have a pile of shit to do without time being a factor. Look, queen, this week is just gonna be a shitshow. The earlier you recognize and anticipate that, the more you’ll be able to accept and be at peace with the universe when the barista screws up your Starbucks.
=====

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Oh, gurl, why are you even going there? And by “there,” I mean that dark place that contains all your neuroses, apprehensions and regrets about bad memories from distant past. Look queen, if you’re trying to harness your tolerance for bad shit because you think something horrible is about to happen, this is not the way to go. Huddling up on your own is not a good idea right now. You need to be among the bitches who love and accept yo ass. #textthem
=====

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)

Here are just some of the things that annoy you: inefficiency, business e-mails on a Sunday, and people who walk their dogs without leashes (it’s careless, selfish, with a dash of lazy). Look queen, I’ll be the first one to tell a ho to wait at least 24 hours before speaking up when bitches do these things, but sometimes, you just gotta let someone have it, right on the muthafucking spot.
=====

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)

You need to be careful what you’re promising other bitches. You may think you have something in the bag, but have you looked in there lately? Look, queen, there is no need to make any big proclamations about the future right now because any ho within hearing distance may start making life-altering adjustments to their routine all willy-nilly. The least you can do is wait a few fucking days.
=====

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)

Look, queen, existing in two planes is not usually your gig (that’s more of a PISCES thing), but not this week. Get ready for a tug of war between your default intense nature which usually anchors you to the ground, and your awakened exploratory instincts that are more apt to search for new experiences to find meaning, even if it’s at a clearance bin at cRoss Dress For Less. As far as internal conflicts go, it’s better than a post-Chipotle experience.
=====

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)

Thanks to a rut in one of your key relationships, your zodiac sign isn’t the only thing that has “SAG” in it. Could it be that maybe you’ve waited too long as far as even attempting to make any repairs in this partnership? Look, queen, if there’s even a nugget of anything that is worth saving in this union, I fucking urge you to get thee to fixing that shit. Immediately, if not sooner.
=====

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)

The minute some bitch gets all emotional on you this week, you’re out. You are a firm believer that there is a place and time for catering to other hos “outbursts,” and your business vicinity ain’t it. Look, queen, I know that you’re focused on rolling up your sleeves and getting shit done but you also have to recognize that this person in front of you may not just be some employee.
=====

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)

You’ve been on-the-go so much, that you’ve grown accustomed to always trying to get shit done. The idea of rest is so fucking alien to you now that you’ve trained yourself to sleeping only four hours a night. Look queen, that shit adds up. Instead of being so worried about the countless duties you have to do, why not sit back, relax and celebrate what you have accomplished?
=====

PISCES (February 19 – March 20)

So you do this thing where, when you’re critiquing others, you like to bookend that shit with unnecessary piles of praise and encouragement. We think that you do this as a way to pad the blow. Look, queen, I’m not saying that you should stop that shit. All I’m saying is that we can see what you’re doing. We’re onto you, gurl, thanks to our PISCES Opinion Filter, now available in all colors of the fucking rainbow.

Art School | Nathan Bell (Los Angeles, CA)

As one of the shows featured in our April First Thursdays, Los Angeles-based artist Nathan Bell’s upcoming solo show ‘Mixed Feelings’ will featured 400 works using materials such as french paper, coroplast, and mixed media.  Self described “introverted over thinker with a design background,” Bell expresses himself through the painted word, or rather words –a whole lot of them. Through experimenting with “language, typography and aesthetic,” Bell’s work focuses on thoughts, ideas, wordplays, inside jokes, reflections, all of which he has been creating for the last two years!

We’re excited to feature him on Art School where we find out more about his works and words! From working with new materials to his process to what we should expect in his solo show ‘Mixed Feelings,’ which opens Saturday, April 22nd at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles.

anonymous asked:

How do you create characters? Or do they come find you and tell you their stories?

I’m afraid it varies! It really depends on the situation. It feels too pragmatic to sound creative but too creative to sound pragmatic.

On the creative end, sometimes the characters do come to me. But they usually aren’t presenting their stories outright.

In a literal sense, a character idea will pop in my head, so I’ll write up a little about them—the things I feel to be true—and sometimes give them a piece of flash fiction (or something else short) so I can get a feeling for how they are and if they fit my initial assessment.

I prefer character-driven media, so I focus on what the character is like and figure out what they want. For example, my second NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) was a story about a writer. (Wow, yes, I know. So original. Writing about a writer. Yeah.) I didn’t know what the writer wanted, but I knew what she was like. I knew her base situation as well. If you know their base situation (where they are at the beginning of the story or slightly prior to it), you can figure out what makes them unhappy about it.

After all, stories are about journeys, whether they are emotional or physically moving to a different place or whatever.

My writer character felt like she didn’t have the life experience to be a good writer. Summer comes, and she chooses to take that time to travel to different places and meet new people. One conflict is that her parents don’t really want her to go, especially by herself, because she was only 17 or so.

I evaluated the character (she was an ambitious writer) and calculated in what she didn’t like about where she was (she was an inexperienced writer). So the plot/story came to me from there: she decides to leave so she can travel and get life experience.

In that sense, they don’t always exactly tell me their stories. I focused on what made the writer who she was and what kind of growth she needed to take, not necessarily the growth she wanted.

The idea was that, by the end, she had gained experience but that she didn’t feel richer for it, so she was going to struggle with trying to realize what she had actually learned by leaving. I never really got there, but that was the idea.

So I didn’t say to myself, “I have a writer character, and I want her to travel.” I said to myself, “I have a concept of a writer who is inexperienced. She wants to travel to get that valuable experience. I guess the story should be about her travels.”

The story fell flat and unfinished, of course, by virtue of how I intended for her to go cross-country when I had not done the same. It felt inauthentic, and I bailed. I jammed out some nonsense so I could say I had “won” NaNoWriMo that year.

My more pragmatic view on characters is that I have a basic concept (like, very basic, as in “I want to write about a character that worships unicorns”) and then go through my personal questionnaires to determine the rest of their traits and what they’re like.

  • Where does this character live (mountains, valley, riverbed, beach, etc.)?
  • What surrounds their home (what kind of buildings, what landmarks, what roads)?
  • What is the climate like?
  • How many moons and suns does that world have?
  • What is the time period?
  • What kind of city/town do they live in?
  • How many people live there? What kinds of people?
  • What plants (fruit, trees, spices, vegetables, etc.) do they produce?
  • What animals/wildlife do they have?
  • What is the character’s role in that place?
  • Why do they have that role?
  • What are their goals? Are they happy with their current role?
  • What is the one thing they most want to change?
  • What are their hobbies? What interests them?
  • What is their family like? Any siblings? Parents alive? What relationships do they have with their family members (MC to father, MC to sister, etc.)? What relationships do the family members have with each other (mother to father, brother to sister, etc.)?
  • Do they have any current love interests? What has their love life been like?
  • What are they good at?
  • Do they have any religious beliefs? If so, what are they? If not, why?
  • Do they perform any rituals (religious or otherwise)?
  • What body type do they have? How do other people perceive their appearance?
  • What is their view on gender roles?

I then check out what I said about their goals and roles.

  • What would they need to do in order to achieve their goals?
  • Is it feasible?
  • Would it be an interesting story? Why or why not?
  • Who would try to stop them?
  • What obstacles are in the way (giant wall, overbearing parents, lack of money, education necessities, etc.)?
  • Why are these goals and roles so important? Who are they most important to?

After all that, it feels like a good time to start plotting the story out. And it’s straight-forward from there! (Usually.) When I start plotting, I generally go with a general idea of where things start and where things end. Then, I can figure out what would happen in between.

Story-plotting is about way more than waiting for the right inspiration. Being a writer is about dedication and writing, even when inspiration is nonexistent. But you have to write to find inspiration. You can inspire yourself simply by working. You can’t let a blank page let you down. You have to create stories and not just wait for them to come to you.

Inspiration, though, is awesome. If you get inspired, run with it—with all of your ability, run with it. But you won’t feel inspiration every single day, so you have to learn how to create characters and stories on your own.

I actually have some resources already on my blog. :) For reasons of convenience, I include them below.

To clip or, not to clip?

Birds are designed for flight, with advanced body systems - their respiratory system takes in far more oxygen than mammals, their feathers are designed individually to serve a purpose on their bodies, they have hollow bones and a unique muscular structure.

*Disclaimer*
As a highly debatable subject i will say; this post is my opinion for keeping FLIGHTED companion birds.
I will underline why people do clip and how, in theory (as i can’t vouch for every single pet bird case there is in regards to illness or certain situations) i like to work my way around these opinions.

Learning how to fly is basic for a birds mental health.
If a bird has never had any experience in taking the first important leap into flying, how is it supposed to know what reaching boundaries are all about?
A flegling learns what life is about through learning how to fly.
What surfaces are safe to land on through trial and error, confidence building, and puzzle solving.

“Fledgling parrots have to learn how to fly, they aren’t given those skills instinctually and just like humans, learning how to run and walk, baby birds need time to practice and learn these skills. Parrots are FULLY capable of learning how to avoid glass doors and windows. Even in new environments they can see glass even better then we can. Most baby birds don’t know how to slow down and or turn around in time before they reach the glass, therefore smashing into it. It is very important before you take a bird into a room with glass, let it learn to fly, properly! First off, in a small, secure room so they cannot gain a lot of speed, and they can learn these necessary skills. Then taking your bird in a small room with a glass door or window. Taking your bird up to a glass door or win. Just like humans learning how to walk - baby birds need time to practice and learn these skills” (Lauren Hinds, bird enthusiast and free flight trainer)

Birds need to understand limitations, especially in a household environment to avoid any chance of injury.
“If flighted territorial/aggressive birds are allowed free range through the house they’ll bite every one that isn’t their bonded human.” I hear this statement quite often as an excuse for clipping.
This isn’t a behaviour that can be solved through taking away a birds ability to fly, this where teaching your bird limits and training comes into play - before this behaviour escalates to become a problem and harder to solve. This is especially important when teaching the bird which rooms are safe and which rooms they can’t go in, etc.
Keeping your bird stimulated and showing them where they can and can’t be without supervision through various ways such as having playstands with toys, shredding materials, flight paths and recall training, socialisation, training equipment, diet enrichment when outside (and in) their cage.
Birds are prey animals, therefore they have a strong instinct to avoid situations by flying away if they feel uncomfortable, especially when it is relying soley on people to get around. Taking that if you’d like, independance away from them, and forcing them to be with you can cause behavioural problems with confidence, fear and/or agression.
Having a bird that is entertained and learning should give no reason to bite the first person that comes in the room. Not to mention fussy eaters who haven’t had the freedom of flight will increase appetite once they regain their power to fly and in return, will likely try new foods.

Another reason people clip (and a good reason) is because their birds crash into walls, windows, mirrors.

When i first let Av out of her cage for a fly she done just that. Same with Lou but it only happen one time until he got his barings.
How i helped her learn to overcome that situation swiftly was pre training in her cage with target training.
Taking her out straight onto a hand held perch was a safe place and really helped with getting her to land safely and get back in her cage.
Whenever she made a mistake with hitting a wall, the best way to get over it is take the perch over to her, get her on it and place her back into the cage with no fuss and a soft quiet calming voice to lower stress.
Straight away i encourage a flight route around the room to and forth her cage. This helped her navigate safely and get a handle on where she could and couldn’t go.
Even though she wouldn’t let me touch her she knew it was safe to be around me and how to navigate through a human environment.
So what I’m trying to say is this reason for clipping CAN be helped and i deeply encourage owners to try this.

Muscle atrophy is another issue that concerns me with clipped birds.
Basically when a bird flies they strengthen their chest/breast muscles which in turn provide fitness and optimal oxygen and blood flow through their body. Birds need to use these areas of their body to stay healthy and a clipped bird getting ‘wing exercise’ via staying perched and flapping is not a way to do so as this does not use those muscles as they’re supposed to. Therefore ceased use of muscles turn into muscle wastage and they then break down if not used.

“Clipped birds won’t escape through open windows or doors, and there is a higher chance of flighted birds flying away thorugh open doors windows.“
This is a total myth. I can’t express this enough.
I feel like in some instances this can create a false sense of security with having a clipped bird, unless you have a heavily clipped bird (not reccomened as they can’t glide or get any lift) lightly trimmed wings will still get lift in windy situations.
This means they can still make it out side through opened doors and windows.
Now, in my opinion having a bird that is grounded and can’t gain lift to take off from predators, cats and dogs, wild birds and more susceptible to injury through being on the ground.
Flighted birds however can escape these sitations and have the option to fly back to you or a nearby person or secure place.
This is also another reason why i encourage taking your bird securely outside on a harness or in a travel cage so they get used to being outdoors. Also be familiar with recall training and descent landing, so they can likely land on you from flying down out of a tree with confidence. Even clipped birds should be taught this technique as they should still be able to glide their way down to you.

Like I said before, illness or situations where perhaps clipping could be necessary when trying to get a hold on solving certain behavioural issues such as repeated self injury is the only time i’d get a birds wings clipped.
Keeping in mind, after a fully flighted bird has been suddenly grounded from flying - their main form of movement - this can cause insecurities, lethargy, depression and just general decreased happiness.

Whether you clip your birds wings or keep them flighted is up to the indivdual owner.
I haven’t outlined every aspect of pros and cons here and this is a purely opinionated post but, i just hope you can think of the bigger picture here that is the wellbeing of your birds.
Keeping parrots as companion animals does wonders for our lives, but would you really want to take away the thing that makes a bird, a bird - A happy balanced individual.

They sat with their shoulders touching and their knees bumping against each other. She smiled when he gently laced his fingers through hers but her good mood faltered when she took a look at his face. He seemed distracted, his brows furrowed and his forehead wrinkled, his eyes unfocused.
“What’s on your mind?”
“I keep thinking about what would have happened if I hadn’t been at that birthday party a year ago and drunk out of my mind. I would never have made a move to talk to you.” He glanced down at their joined hands.
“You wouldn’t have vomited all over my new shoes, either.” He laughed at the memory, remembering the embarrassment that had set his cheeks aflame as though it was yesterday. “Where would we be now if we hadn’t met there?” he asked quietly. There was something about reminiscing that left a bitter aftertaste. Being nostalgic always came with the finality of knowing a situation had passed.
“How do we know what we missed out on when we were at the wrong places with the wrong people? What if it was something wonderful, something life-changing? Something we didn’t get to experience because we made the wrong decision?” She squeezed his hand and pressed her lips to his temple, quick and sweet.
“We don’t. And I think that’s what makes life so interesting and so so beautiful.”
