life in the spirit

GLORY >>> suffering

“…if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
Romans 8:17,18 New King James Version

The Celtic Christians had a name for the Holy Spirit that has always intrigued me. They called him An Geadh-Glas or the Wild Goose. I love the imagery and implications. Much like a wild goose, the Spirit of God cannot be tracked or tamed. An element of danger and air of unpredictability surround Him. And while the name may sound a little sacrilegious at first earshot, I cannot think of a better description of what it’s like to live a Spirit-led life than Wild Goose Chase.

I still get an overwhelming feeling of …why? when I look at that head and wings. I really think this would have benefited from a more aggressive silhouette?

“Springs and wells have always been venerated, from exceedingly remote times onward, because water is a basic necessity of life, and to our forefathers it seemed a mysterious and spirit-haunted thing. A lively spring which brought fertility to the land where it flowed, and to men and beasts who depended upon that land, was once almost universally supposed to be the dwelling place of some powerful spirit to whom prayer and sacrifice were due.”

y/n’s long pajama pants dragged across the wooden floor of her apartment as she made her way to the kitchen. her eyes scanned over the pantry, looking for something to eat until fernando came home. time ticked away slowly today while the gloomy forecast made the impossibly long day even more dreadful.

the rain pattered against the patio window, a sound that she would never get used to. the spacey apartment was usually filled with sun and fresh air, an usual day for madrid life. but when ever it rained, it seemed like the whole city’s spirit was diminished.

standing on her toes and reaching for the top shelf, y/n grabbed the box of sugar cookies and strolled back to her seat. the indent of her bum on the couch hadn’t faded away, and she slowly slipped back into the position she had been in all day long.

hours passed by and fernando had dropped off the face of the earth. no calls or texts. friday was always their day together, just them. whether it was a fancy dinner at his favorite place, or a run to mcdonald’s dollar menu, he always made sure friday was for her. but today, y/n found herself spending her open day curled up on the couch, alone.

“i understand, i mean, he has training. but it has been,” she paused to glance at the illuminated digital clock on the microwave. “4 hours. and you know friday is always for us.” she complained to her best friend over the phone.

“i told you to come out with me tonight. but noooo, you didn’t want to listen.” y/b/f/n responded back with a huff and a puff in her voice.

“you are no help! i miss him and i just saw him earlier today.” you moaned into the phone.

“because you are in loveeeeee. i mean, how could you not be? have you seen your boyfriend? god, i can only imagine what he would be like in be-“ her best friend’s obnoxiousness was interrupted by the rustling over the door handle and the jingling of keys.

“i am going to have to call you back. and he’s mine!” y/n giggled back into the speaker as she stood up from the couch, tossing her phone into the mound of blankets.

she slid her socks across the polished floors, skating to reach the door before he did. by the time she was ready to pull the door handle, her boyfriend made it there before her.

she was expecting a smiling, bright fernando. his usual goofy smile that exaggerated the story of how funny koke was at practice today. the puppy eyes he would give her when he asked to cuddle with his sweaty body. but, that wasn’t the case today.

a soaked from head to toe fernando stood at the door. his hair was sprawled across his forehead, and tiny blades of grass stuck to his cheeks. the smell of rain drenched his training clothes. he was shivering all over his body and his jaw clenched at the cold air that circulated the hallway. his lips that were usually soft, plump and a mellow tint of pink were now chapped and pulled into a grumpy expression.

“hi mi amor.” you whispered while holding onto his shoulder blade to brush your bottom lip against his earlobe. “how was training?”

he grunted and continued to walk towards the kitchen without answering. y/n cocked her head in confusion, did she do something wrong?

“ummm, nando?” she questioned softly again, making sure not to upset him.

“it was shit! it was freezing cold and it rained the entire time!” he exclaimed a little too angrily, flailing his arms in the air. “i don’t know why you fucking care so much.”
y/n took a step back from his tall frame and titled her head at him in confusion. being the petty person she was, attitude washed over her face as she pushed past him. she marched towards their master bedroom, where he would not be sleeping tonight. she slammed the door behind her, making sure that he heard it across the apartment.

“not my fault someone pissed in your cereal this morning.” she muttered angrily. angry because she had done nothing wrong for him to yell at her. angry because it was now 8 o’clock, and she had now wasted her entire day waiting for someone who didn’t even want to look her in the eye as he cursed at her.

“you know what? i don’t care!” she lied to herself as she walked into the bathroom, her feet padding against the cold tiles. “i just need a bath. and red wine.”

her unclenched her hands and her white knuckles were soon fading back into their normal shade. she turned the faucets of the bathtub and waited for the steaming hot water to fill the tub.

fernando plopped down on the couch shaking his head with guilt. he was so stupid to yell at her like that. cursing at her when she just asked how his day was. he was so selfish and naive.

she never complained about his long training days, even on fridays. she never threatened to leave because of his trips across europe and his absence in the relationship. she never moaned and groaned about having to cook for him or do his laundry.

he shook his head and flipped cluelessly through the channels on tv. he was engulfed in his own thoughts trying to figure out how he was going to fix this. but his train of thought was interrupted by the slow creaking of the master bedroom door.

he turned his neck quickly to find y/n walking towards the kitchen, not even looking in his direction. she grabbed a full bottle of red wine and a glass and made her way back into the room. she was not partaking in any soft apology from fernando, and she was making that very clear.

fernando pulled his head back and groaned.

when y/n strolled back in the bathroom, the steaming hot water had nearly filled up the tub. she smiled to herself in satisfaction.

“that will show him. i will not be walked all over.” she smirked as she slowly mixed the bubbly mixture into the water. bubbles brimmed up to the top of the bathtub in smooth layers.

y/n dropped her silky robe onto the cold bathroom floor and grabbed the bottle of wine. she steadily dipped her toes in at first, and the rest of her body eventually sunk in. she moaned in pleasure as the hot water soothed her sore muscles and anger. she pulled her head back in happiness as the quietness of the room relaxed her. she took a sip of her red wine and closed her eyes as she spent their, her friday alone.

her peace and quiet were interrupted by the creaking of the bathroom’s french doors. she sunk deeper under the bubbles, not even bothering to open her eyes. she knew who it was. fernando. her usually irresistible boyfriend. the man she couldn’t keep her hands off for 5 minutes. his sharp v-line and jawline that she couldn’t help to trace and his smooth neck that her lips would run over.

but today was different. he wasn’t so irresistible today after his little stunt he pulled. let alone her hands, she tried to distance herself as far away as possible from him. but nando was stubborn. he couldn’t stand her ignoring him. he didn’t like the fact that her fingers weren’t sliding up and down his chest. or the way that she didn’t even blink an eye at him as she continued her little game with him.

his loud feet padded against the floor as y/n groaned internally.

“i can’t get one minute without him.” she thought to herself.

fernando walked to the edge of the tub where her head was perched. he laid his head down on the edge of the tub and ran sloppy kisses up and down her neck.

“mi. amor. i am. sorry.” he breathed in between kisses. y/n shrugged a little at his effort. butterfly kisses weren’t going to change her mind. he was going to have to do more than that.

fernando frowned as he tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear. he hated when she was angry at him. the only thing nando ever did for her was to make her happy. she cooked his meals and washed his laundry. she traveled to most of his games and practically did everything for him. and fernando couldn’t even manage one thing for her.

“please listen. i am sorry.” he said in a hushed tone. “i never meant to yell at you. i had a bad day at training. i couldn’t get the ball under control or finish any of my shots. and coach was on my ass the whole time, and i guess i just took it out on you.”

y/n eyes remained shut as she waited for him to continue.

“and i know that is not an excuse. i feel sick to my stomach the way i treated you tonight. it was our day and i ruined it for you. i am so worried i take you for granted. you do everything for me. you cook, clean, and support me no matter what. i can’t even manage to make you happy. i don’t deserve you.” he brushed against her earlobe. his whispers sent goosebumps down her body as she sat up and turned to look at him.

“nando,” she drawled as she cupped his sad face. “you make me the happiest girl in the world. don’t ever think i feel like this relationship is a job for me. i love to cook for you, you know how much i love to cook.” she explained as she made eye contact with him. her lips curved into a grin as nando giggled a little.

“you do love to cook. and i love your cooking. and i love yo-“

she dragged her finger over his lips signaling him to stop rambling.

“i only do your laundry when i also have mine own to do. i come to your games because i love seeing my gorgeous boyfriend play for my favorite club in the world. and to see griezmann’s ass.” she giggled a little.

“please don’t feel like i ever don’t like doing stuff for you. i love you and your inability to cook, your messy clothes, and your shitty games. our relationship won’t always be bright and enjoyable at times. but as long as i am with you, everything is perfect.” she drawled as her lips dragged across his earlobe.

“god, i am such a stupid, lucky man.” he moaned as he rubbed his head into the crook of her neck.

“that you are. now get in you loser.” she chuckled. fernando stripped down to his underwear, winking at y/n as he pulled off his final layers.

“now, how about a more sincere apology?” he smirked at y/n as he left hot kisses up and down the valley of her breasts.

y/n moaned in satisfaction, knowing she would need more red wine for this round of apologies.

You said you wanted to use sand benders as an analogy for Middle Eastern cultures and the stigmas they face. Will religion play any part of the story? I realize people, culture and religion are separate issues, but some of the stigma in the West is based on their religion, whether they practice it or not.

I’m a little hesitant to get near religion. Also there isn’t much to go on religion-wise in the Avatar universe other than respecting spirits and life etc. I think I’ll focus solely on racial / ethnic tensions caused by misunderstanding, bigotry, etc. I might work in religious practices for the Swamp tribes etc. though if I can figure stuff out.
