Liberty cap

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England is currently exhibiting the shortlisted entries for the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. This amazing picture of the Milky Way and orographic lenticular clouds hanging above Liberty Cap, a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, was taken by Rogelio Bernal Andreo.

Happy 130th birthday to Lady Liberty! On this day in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated, becoming a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. In 1924, it was designated as a National Monument. 305 feet above the ground, her torch has been a shining beacon on our greatest days and our darkest nights. Photo courtesy of Michael Bissel.

I am feeling sad and angry today, so I painted one of my favorite symbols of America.

At the time the Statue of Liberty was placed, immigration to the US was still limited to “free white persons of good character.”

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated just two years after the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited all Chinese immigration.

The Statue of Liberty became a national monument in 1924, the same year Arabs and Asians were banned from immigration(Africans were restricted).

The Immigration Act of 1924 established a preference for specific immigrant groups that would “preserve the ideal of America homogeneity.”

And this is why the Statue of Liberty means a lot to me. She has been physically present through a history of racist immigration laws. But her message of hope, and solidarity, and welcome still remain aspirational. She is not what America *is*, she is what America could be.

And that is why I, as an immigrant(from a majority Muslim country, no less), get teary every goddamn time I think of the Statue of Liberty.

I’m an American. Usually, proudly so. Today, not so much. I was born here. My mother and father were born here. Their mothers and fathers were born here. Beyond that, my ancestors came here from other places; mostly from Germany, a bunch from Ireland, some from England and France, and one from Sweden. America is my home. It is my country. But, it is not mine alone! It belongs to all of us – those who came here in the past, those who seek to come here now, and those who will come in the future! We are a nation built on immigration. That lady in New York harbor says, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” I’ve read that plaque with my own eyes; there is no asterisk denoting “except for Syrians,” or any other nationality.

Bombardement de Tous les Trônes de l'Europe et la Chûte des Tyrans pour la Bonheur de l'Univers (The Bombardment of All the Thrones of Europe and the Fall of the Tyrants for the Happiness of the Universe) - Anonymous French artist, circa 1792.

In this political cartoon the deputies of the French National Assembly (the sans-culottes, or no-britches), led by Liberty, aim their, er, invective at the monarchs of Europe who are endeavoring to overthrow Revolutionary France, headed by Catherine the Great.

“In this photo provided by Vitória Londero, a giant banner saying ‘Refugees Welcome’ hangs on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis said the banner was hung from the public observation deck on Tuesday afternoon. It was taken down more than an hour later. The stunt took place the day the Department of Homeland Security announced expanded immigration enforcement policies. Photograph: Vitória Londero/AP”

Democracy, Authoritarianism, Fascism, and the Fall of The United States of America

When I was standing on a sidewalk in Washington D.C. on January 20th, holding a sign that said “Resist Fascism,” a man (who couldn’t quite understand the level of kinetic emotion he and his well-dressed companion were witnessing) asked me what fascism meant to me.  Didn’t I think that the authorities had a right and a duty to contain misbehavior?  I had a hard time articulating a proper answer (because I hadn’t slept in something like thirty-six hours and I was watching my own ass in a somewhat dangerous, complicated situation).

Foggy Nelson: Co-counsel, Matt, sit down. Our client Frank Castle is innocent, call your first witness. That’s all you had to say!
