Film and Panel to Discuss the Experiences of Transgender People Today
Film Screening on Nov. 17th @ 7 p.m.
NORTHAMPTON, Ma–The LGBT Coalition of Western Massachusetts and the UMass Stonewall Center are partnering on a screening of against a transgender narrative, a documentary film that investigates the meanings of masculinity, dominant constructions of gender identity, and the nature of community.
The director, Jules Rosskam, a visiting assistant professor of Film and Video Production at Hampshire College, will be on hand to discuss and answer questions about the film. Two other area transgender activists, Nic Weinstein and Anne Beon, will also participate in the discussion.
“The goal of the film is not to present a cohesive image of trans-masculinity because such a task is impossible,” states Rosskam. “The goal is to instigate conversations among feminists, queers, transfolks, and anyone else invested in radically shifting the ways in which we construct personal and historical narratives.”
The film screening will be held on Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Society, 220 Main Street in Northampton. The event is free and open to the public.
This date was chosen for the film to coincide with the International Transgender Day of Remembrance, an event held every November 20 to recognize individuals who have been murdered in the previous year because of their gender identity or expression. In the Pioneer Valley, the Day of Remembrance will be marked with a march and vigil on November 20 at 5:30 p.m. at First Churches in Northampton.
“It is appalling that individuals are murdered and brutalized just because they are transgender,” states Suzanne Seymour, Executive Director of the LGBT Coalition of Western MA. “We must take the time and opportunities presented to understand more about their struggles and unique challenges. This film and panel discussion is one such opportunity to gain insight into these matters.”
