Top 10 anime guys

Thank you @lexinthymia for tagging me again! I wanted to limit this to one character per series; it was hard but here we are! Also, I will admit that some of these choices are not only based on the anime these character were in, but also what happened to them later on the manga (if the anime stopped at a certain point). I probably went into more detail about each of these guys then I needed to and their will be some spoilers for certain series, but I love talking about them!

Honourable mention who didn’t make it on to the list: Kaneki Ken (Tokyo Ghoul), D (Vampire Hunter D), Karou Hitachiin and Tameki Suoh (Ouran Highschool Host Club), Germany (Hetalia), Ling Yao (Fullmetal Alchemist), and a whole smattering of characters from BLEACH.

10. Kiyosama ‘Crow’ Senji - Deadman Wonderland

Senji’s the biggest badass in the whole series and had some of the best fights. I love his character arc and how he basically become an older brother-figure to Ganta; their friendship has become on of my favourite BROTPs ever. It also helps that he’s voiced by Patrick Seitz, one of my favourite voice actor of all time.

9. Vash the Stampede - Trigun

There are very few characters that can be badass one minute and an absolute goofball the next without it feeling jarring to me. Vash is one of these few, and he’s brilliant because of it. All of his actions, whether they’re serious or comedic, make sense to his character - his mystery and loneliness is as much a part of him as his eccentricities and obsession with donuts. And he has a awesome character design to boot!

8. Johan Liebert - Monster

Johan is such a masterfully crafted character, to the point where you can feel his presence even when he is off panel/screen. He’s present in everyone of the character actions, the puppet master behind the scenes. There’s also his intriguing relationship with his twin Nina, which brings out the very few sympathetic parts of him. He’s low on the list because I haven’t  finished either the anime or manga yet, and while I definitely don’t ‘love’ him in any sense, but he’s somehow both captivating and distrubing all at once. I can’t wait to see how his character unfolds.

7. Edward Elric - Fullmetal Alchemist

I had a hard time choosing between Edward and Ling Yao, but in the end I chose Ed because of how much development he went through. He’s inspiring in a lot of ways, with his steadfast determination and his relateable moral dilemmas, and he’s also one of the few characters that can be badass one minute and an absolute dork the next without it be jarring or taking away from his character. The bonds he shares with everyone only made me like him even more likeable and relateable, especially his relationships with Al, Winry, and Ling.

6. Levi Ackerman - Shingeki no Kyojin

Levi has been through so much tradegy and loss. I can’t get over his past as a child (the fact he stayed by his mother’s bedside to the point where he tarved himself and was wearing her shirt, it makes me tear up every time) and with Farlan and Isabel (the emotions he diplayed after their deaths…oh God). His more recent development in the manga was amazing to see: he smiled at his comrades, learned more about his past, and the explosive rage he showed when he lost one of the dearest people to him had me in shock and awe. Also, the animation they put on this guy in both seaons is jaw-dropping a lot of the time.

5. Shigeo ‘Mob’ Kageyama - Mob Psycho 100

My second son! Mob is the heart and soul of this anime: he’s such a kind, likeable, and gentle character who only wants to fit in, make friends, and get the attention of the girl he likes. What I love most about Mob is his will to better himself whichever way he can and the hard work he’s willing to put into that goal. He doesn’t rely on his psychic powers to make friends, but as a result of not fully embracing that part of himself and fearing his own abilities, he haa emotionally hindered himself; it makes him incredibly sympathetic to me (I cried with him when he unintentionally tore the school apart and I cheered when he was reunited with Ritsu).

4. Ayame Sohma - Fruits Basket

This man and his glorious antics. Oh, Ayame…we go back a long way. Everything about this guy is just hilarious: his past as the student council president, his spontaneous displays of affect and drama, and his innuendos with Shigure. He never fails to put a smile on my face whenever he’s on screen! However, his serious moments are great too: they added a lot to him and I was 100% invested in his character arc and development (i.e. trying to reconcil with his actions made in the past and reconnect with his younger brother Yuki).

3. Makoto Sunakawa - Ore Monogatari!!

This guy is the very definition of ‘bro’. I love how supportive and caring he is towards Takeo. Heck, one of the highlights of both the anime and manga is the friendship between Suna and Takeo: Ore Momogatari!! is one of the rare shoujo series that actually focuses on another type of relationship outside of the main romance. I sense a genuine, platonic love from him to Takeo and vice-versa, and enhance both of them as character and the story as a whole. There’s also the fact he’s perceptive of those around him, often able to tell what kind of person an individual is, and his placid, calming attitude is a nice change of pace for what I usually find in shoujo male characters.

2. Guts - Berserk

Oh, Guts…Like a lot of character on this list, I love Guts for the fact he’s gone through so much tragedy and still strives forward. Why he’s higher on the list is because his tragedy is still ongoing but he’s moving forward growing as character in such realisitic and painful ways. He has a horrowing, painful past even before he got to the Band of the Hawk, and even after the events of the Eclipse, his life has been anything but a happy. He’s such a deep, magnificently-crafted character, and the closest I’ve seen to a ‘character become a real human in all of anime. Every emotion he expresses feels so real to me ( I have cried for him more time then I can count and I have no word to describe how I felt watching him suffering during the Eclipse), and of course this is helped tremendoul by Miruma’s incredible art. I wish I could say SO MUCH more about him, but we’d be here all day and this post is long enough as is. I wait freverently for the day he finally confronts Griffith!

1. Toshiro Hitsugaya - BLEACH

Well of course I was going to my fictional son at the top of this list! Okay, in all seriousness though, it’s been a weird journey with Toshiro. I started off being indifferent towards him, but when he revealed other facets of himself through the relationships he had with others (in particular his bond with Hinamori), I really started to like him. And now here we are, eight years later and I love this little guy so much that, as a fan of his, I am so proud of how far he has come. He’s one of the most selfless character I’ve seen, willing to put anything on the line for those he cares about and push himelf to his limit to become stronger…and he’s only a kid (by Shinigami standards)!! I could go on all day about him, but I’ll leave that to my other posts where I’ve talked about his character and development. He, along with Momo, holds a special, nostalgic place in my heart.

I tag @sakura-warrior, @herprettysmile, @ishiyo, @xxhanabifireworksxx  and @johnnysjoestar if you guys want to do this :D

__________

The first time Levi saw it happening he blamed the lack of his reading glasses for what he’d just witnessed, passed it off as a misunderstanding. The second time was just plain weird.

And now here he stood for a third time, watching from behind a half-open door as his husband rolled his eyes back and slumped into the bedsheets, cracked sighs of relief sounding so loud in the otherwise quiet home. Levi gulped once, strangely aroused by the display but similarly aghast at what was occuring, a deep purple sphere being run slowly up and down Erwin’s tanned cheek.

Each pass caused another low moan, the man on the mattress unaware that his partner was even back from the store and Levi stared as Erwin’s toes curled in apparent pleasure - he’d never actually made it to the store, forgotten shopping-list having been abandoned unintentionally on the kitchen work top, the only reason that Levi had come home so prematurely.

He’d never stuck around before to see what would follow, previous encounters left alone with a hurried pace and the quietest close of the front door that Levi could manage, however he found himself enraptured and unable to move.

Erwin’s tongue flicked out quickly to taste the fruit, wet muscle taking the smallest of licks and all the blood from Levi’s brain sank deep into his crotch, nature’s bodily reaction catching him off guard and confusing his mind. He tried to concentrate on what was surely so wrong about the whole scenario, remove any sexual connotations - it was difficult though, Erwin’s whimpers of delight making Levi’s ears burn as hot as his groin.

( @choosingfreedom❤’d )

There might come a time for them both when both motives and action would go unquestioned across their disillusioned ranks, merit earned by survivorship and comradery, but that time was in the distant future. Until then, for any common scout who had yet to prove their tenacity to the masses, there was an endless stream of questioning should they try and procure extra meal portions or other ‘luxuries’. But for the clever there were happy accidents. Like minor kitchen fires with billowing smoke at the precise moment a certain brunette decided to break into the officer’s closet for a bottle of alcohol for trade.

That had been yesterday and Hanji was pleased with the fresh loaf of bread, as well as the other treats she had gotten since. Whether Levi liked it or not, she wasn’t about to let that harden and go to waste. Bread tucked under one arm, a cast iron pot’s handle starting burn at one hand, two mugs close to slicking the floor with tea when she lucked out and found him in the hall. “Take one of the teas before I drop them.” Far from a request. She was already moving a foot out as though to trip Levi should he try to pass her. “Or force them both your throat.”

Interview Highlights from an Interview with Ono Daisuke [SnK movie pamphlet, 27 June 2015]

[translation: yusenki | editing: thirstylevi]

[source: scans]

In this interview from the magazine given out after the second compilation movie, Ono Daisuke (Erwin Smith’s Voice Actor) talked about understanding Erwin and his motives/emotions, coming to like Erwin, and Erwin’s role in ACWNR. Regarding Levi he states, “Levi is someone who has considerably become own Erwin’s flesh and blood, and for Erwin to meet Levi was such a fruitful moment.”

Interviewer: Did you have your doubts about your efforts when you took on this role?

Ono: I asked myself, “Who is this person?” I didn’t understand. I think Isayama-sensei is the one who knows Erwin the best. At that time, I wasn’t well informed about this ‘Erwin’ character. But Erwin is the person who knows everything. Whether it’s regarding Eren, who is right before his eyes, or regarding the titan’s invasion, he is the type who looks beyond that and into the future. I thought, “What does this all mean? I don’t understand this person.” [laughs]

Interviewer: When you couldn’t fully understand his character, what approach did you take to understand him?

Ono: At first, I couldn’t decide how to describe Erwin… “Mysterious, deep, indifferent,” those were my earlier approaches to his character. The sound supervisor Mima Masafumi told me that he wanted Erwin to sound “more passionate.” This character has such a strong presence because he is in the position of giving out orders. If someone in his position isn’t risking his own life, nobody would follow him. His base line of thinking is different. He’s a mysterious and cool character rather than being outright emotional, because the amplitude of overflowing feelings that he keeps hidden are way too strong, so to the people around him he looks like a needle that doesn’t move [he seems stoic]. Actually, he’s pretty shaken up too, but he controls his emotions so other people can’t read them, and I play him with that in mind, especially in the second compilation movie.

Interviewer: In the first movie magazine character introduction, Erwin was described as “ruthless and cold-hearted,” but is it true we can’t describe him like that?

Ono: Do the words “ruthless and cold-hearted” also mean “being expressionless”? I’m referring to feelings and emotions here. One part of Armin’s speech really summarized everything: “Someone who isn’t willing to sacrifice everything is someone who can’t make a change.” This speech really made a deep impression on me. And from there, there was another hint: “Armin is someone who is walking towards the path of becoming Erwin.” That’s why observing Erwin himself doesn’t help us fully understand him, but I gathered additional information from the way Armin leads his life and through his speech. When I heard this speech, I had an epiphany: Erwin wants to save all the people within the wall, and he’s burdened with the fate of humanity, which is why he was able to sacrifice an entire battalion, which consisted of around 100 soldiers.

Interviewer: When you performed Erwin for the OVA “A Choice With No Regrets” did it change your views of Erwin?

Ono: I have been performing as Erwin for a while and if by then [while performing in ACNWR] I was still clueless about him then that would be really bad… I would have hated that. But ACWNR is a story about Levi and about how he joined Survey Corps. But for Erwin we still have more things to find out. Levi is someone who has considerably become own Erwin’s flesh and blood, and for Erwin meet Levi was such a fruitful moment [the kanji says “a very fruitful/big harvest”]. That is all that I can say about Erwin from ACWNR. I might just be the happiest person to have read it, since I was looking for more information about Erwin and I found a bit of it in ACWNR. Although I was irritated that I wasn’t able to get all the information there is to know about him, I still looked forward to ACWNR when it was published as both the manga and spin-off animation… Although at first I didn’t really like Erwin because I didn’t fully understand him, now I really like him. Walking towards his one goal, he threw away everything, risking his one and only life, and those qualities are what we say are in a real man in Japan. He is genuinely cool.

Interviewer: Erwin’s passion is definitely influencing the audiences!

Ono: Being willing to sacrifice yourself for others…that is the mentality of Japanese people on sacrificing oneself. I feel that there’s a valuable soul contained in this series. I hope that everyone will enjoy this ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’ series with even more passion from now on. Watch the movie, and be passionate!

Five times Eren showed Levi something in the outside world and one time Levi returned the favor.

A post-canon, 5+1 fluff fic with a little Hange thrown in for good measure. Written for Ereri Week 2015, combining the Day 1 and Day 4 prompts “Pining” and “Fireflies.” (2.8k words, posting early because I’m going to be busy on the 4th)

“Captain!”

Levi looked up from his knife sharpening at Eren’s call. Eren bounded towards him through the trees, arms held in front of his body awkwardly. For a moment, Levi thought he’d somehow managed to injury himself despite his ridiculous healing abilities and Mikasa’s ever watchful eye. But as Eren approached, Levi realized he wasn’t hurt; his hands were cupped together around something.

2. Runaway Royalty!AU

How long they had been running, neither knew. Long enough to ditch the crowns and the royal insignias that’s for sure. It was a privileged life they were leaving behind, but not a better one. Of course, anyone else would call them crazy for casting off from their lives of luxury and extravagance. But, to Levi and Eren the castles they hailed from had turned into a hypothetical prison, a cage built from greed and misunderstanding. Because, princes were born to marry princesses.

Not each other.

Levi remembers the look on Eren’s parents’ faces when he asked for their son’s hand. Disgust. Maybe, even a little bit of pity. But, it didn’t stop them from banning Levi’s visits to the castle. From promptly arranging a marriage for their son as to remove him from wandering eyes like Levi’s.

He remembers the tear stained letters he had received from the boy, the wetness that formed in his own eyes at the news. Because, he could take never seeing the bright-eyed boy again, but to know that he was unhappy… that was something Levi could never allow. But, he was no strategist, he had no tricks up his sleeve. And, it seemed as though the fates had decided him worthy to live underneath the knowledge that his long lost prince was suffering.

The escape was sudden and completely unplanned, Levi sneaking into the Shiganshina castle under the guise of a merchant in order to say one last goodbye to his dearly beloved. But, as his lips cascaded across Eren’s in a final farewell, Levi had realized that there was no way he could let his prince go so easily.

So, they ran.

Sneaking out of the castle, they traversed inside the darkness of the alleyways, protected from any suspicious stares. Hand in hand, they were still running, exhaustion threating to overtake them both. The forest they had disappeared into had long since become monotonous and disorienting, everything reminding Levi of the green foliage he was sure that they passed two miles ago.

“We are lost.” Eren is blunt and blatant, sometimes overly so, but this time his statement is not without fortification, the mess of trees surrounding the pair proving to be a decent arguing point.

“Have you lost all faith in me?” He replies to the boy, a little breathy considering the exertion of their escape. A playful smile begins to pull at Eren’s lips, revealing the pristine set of white teeth below, and Levi knows that his faith is all but restored.

“How could such a man ever lose my trust?” Levi smirks as the boy pulls him into his arms. “I wouldn’t dream of it, you know.” He presses his cheek deeper into the rich velvet covering Eren’s torso. “You are my steed, Levi, white and glimmering with hope.” And, he hates it when the boy delves into this sentiment, not because he does not appreciate the acknowledgements; but, because he never knows how to attribute to the young prince’s observations.

Levi has never been one for arts of the tongue, always allowing for his regent to speak on his behalf. Lord knows the decision was a wise one, given his verbal history.

“I agree, but only because you are a fantastic rider.” The boy shoves him off with a scoff, all semblance of romanticism destroyed with his vulgar quip.

“Not a steed, but a pig.” And, he would find Eren offended if not for the broad smile still splayed across his face. Levi wraps a hand around the boy’s wrist as he teasingly tugs the young prince back into an embrace. “And an endearing pig at that. Just imagine how jealous the nobles will be once they discover my prize.” The boy’s smile is still withstanding, pressing itself deep into Levi’s hair.

“I think you should reconsider.” Eren grants Levi a questioning glance as he lifts his face off the older boy’s head. “If I am such a prize then what should you do when they demand me for themselves?” Levi’s hands begin to wander up to the boy’s cheeks, gently caressing the soft skin beneath his fingertips. “When they want me dead?” Eren stiffens underneath his touch, eyes that had been previously pooling lust, filling with an unvoiced anger. And, Levi should have probably left the fear silent, but the thought had been plaguing his mind ever since the pair had crossed over the borders of Shiganshina.

“I would kill them all.” It’s whisper on the boy’s lips, a quiet comfort that the young prince is offering his older beloved. “I would never let them take you, Levi.” Gone is the playful tranquility of the conversation, being replaced with an omen of bloodshed and anguish. Because, the boy is not lying. He will surely die before he witnesses Levi’s head on the spike. And, Levi knows this. Well, knows of the boy’s reckless tendencies. He’s known ever since the fool decided it was wise to joust, secretly, in his honor against the nation’s most esteemed competitor. One set of bruised ribs later, Eren had vehemently denied any regret for teaching the prude a lesson in royal etiquette. Although, if anyone was taught a lesson, it was certainly the bumbling idiot wrapped tightly in the white cloth.

“You’re so foolish, Eren.” The boy’s fingers’ grip tightens in Levi’s tunic, a quiet rage slowly becoming visible in his shaking palms. “So very foolish.” He brings his touch beneath Eren’s wide eyes, steadily wiping away any trace of tears, because a future king must be strong. This is the mindset they have both been bred on, that hardships may arise; but a strong king, a good king never breaks. But, they aren’t princes anymore, that heritage being tossed into the shrubbery along with their jeweled crowns. They are just Eren and Levi, now. Just two scared boys who, in world where anything was theirs for the taking, grabbed for the forbidden fruit.

So, Levi supposes that it’s okay to be scared, to not be strong. Because, they are no longer under the watchful eye of the pompous nobles, but instead of the swaying leaves overhead. He pulls Eren into his shoulder, allowing for any semblance of the boy’s contained grief to buckle against the push of a ready vessel for his sorrow. Eren’s tears are quiet, something instilled in him since he was young as to not wake others with his sobbing. The knowledge of the boy’s inaudibility only prompts Levi to pull him closer, to allow him the protection to spill all of his despair.

Eventually, the sobbing drizzles out into a quiet whimpering, Levi’s shoulder thoroughly soaked through with tears. He releases the boy as he continues on forward into the forest, verbal comforts not being a trade in which he is skilled. Levi hears Eren begin to shuffle behind him, nose stuffy from unleashing the waterworks. Several minutes have passed, and the silence has begun to settle down upon them, only being broken by the crunching of leaves underneath their boots. And, Levi knows that Eren wants to say something. Be it something reassuring or completely obtuse, the boy needs to speak.

“Tell me that I’m wrong, Eren. Tell me that you’ve learned to use the object inside that thick skull of yours.” Levi decides to indulge him, giving the boy something to add a heedless opinion to. But, instead, the older prince is gifted with nothing but the sound of the birds chirping merrily above. “But, I am a grateful pig, if that’s what you want to hear.” His lips pull up into a playful smirk as he turns towards the boy. As expected, Eren’s face cannot contain his amusement, an equally spirited grin publishing itself against his tanned skin.

Levi is about to jest again, but his words are lost to the object revealing itself between the trees. A cabin. And, a seemingly abandoned one at that, vines and brush sheltering the wood like a blanket of vegetation. Levi drifts closer, pushing against a rickety door whose hinges squeak with age when opened. As expected, the structure in all but empty, its only residents being a black kettle and a small table. He hears a deep breath draw in from the boy now standing directly behind him, a breath full of amazement, of content. Because, this could be home.

It is definitely far enough from the repression of Shiganshina, and with the forest surrounding them, they will definitely not be pushed for game. It seems almost too perfect. But, maybe the lord above has finally decided that the pair is worthy of this respite. That they are not the sinful monsters many would make them out to be. The smirk has still not faded from his visage, except now it is a full-blown smile, visibly displaying his happiness at their discovery.

Suddenly, the boy yanks on his hand, interlocking their fingers together in an intimate embrace. He is wearing the same evident glee as Levi, cheeks tugging at the corners of his lips. When he opens his mouth to speak, Levi’s heart expands in his chest, already anticipating the words that are sure to spill from that youthful maw.

“We’re home, Levi.”

-

Several years pass as they continue to inhabit the long forgotten cabin. They both grow older, Eren growing taller much Levi’s annoyance. Soon, the word of the long lost princes becomes a fantasy, told to the young children scampering around the marketplace in avoidance of chores and household duties. It is spoken under partial disbelief, the children never really believing that two members of royalty would so easily desert their lives of fortune and prosperity. Their faces are always questioning and inquiring as they absorb the tale, time and time again. It’s always the same story, but they never tire of the narrative, even if most do not believe. So, every day they wait at the marketplace for the man to appear to tell them it again, waiting for the vendor with the bright, green eyes.

Papaya

Imagine Eren being Levi’s health coach and introducing him to weird foods and combinations that Levi can’t help but fall in love with.

Levi glared at his health coach in absolute disgust. “You expect me to drink that shit?”

Eren chuckles and pushes the green liquid closer to Levi. “If you want to maintain those muscles, then yes.” Eren flashes an innocent grin and Levi can’t help but to give in, there’s nothing he wants more than to please Eren.

With a deep sigh, Levi picks up the drink and wrinkles his nose in disgust. Here goes nothing… Levi tilts the glass and knocks nearly half of it back before he stops to breathe. Eren watches his face closely for his reaction.

“Hmmm…not bad.” Levi examines the liquid closely to avoid Eren’s elated gaze. Even though he admitted to not hating it, that doesn’t mean Levi’s going to give Eren the satisfaction of revealing he genuinely enjoyed it.

He easily finishes the rest, dabbing his mouth delicately with a napkin. “What’s next?” Eren grins mischievously and heads to his cooler bag to grab the next surprise. Levi watches with weary eyes, recalling the last “Meal-Mender” that had resulted in him swearing off tea for a couple of weeks. He still has nightmares about the tea Eren had brought, absolutely wretched dirt-flavored water.

“This baby is an excellent source of vitamin C.” Eren hefts a small greenish melon-like fruit out of the bag, handing it off to a very confused Levi.

“What the hell is this?” Levi pulls a face, holding the fruit as far from him as possible. One thing’s for sure: he does not like the unexpected.

“A papaya!” Eren grins cheerily, leaning on the counter to watch Levi’s intriguing first encounter with this exotic fruit.

Realizing Eren didn’t intend to say or do anything for a while, Levi takes it upon himself to begin inspecting it. First, he begins with wiping down the outside thoroughly with a damp towel to ensure its cleanliness. He then proceeds to raise the odd fruit to his nose to give it a quick sniff, only to be met with nothing.

He glances at Eren in hopes of him stepping in to lead his inspection but is met with a cheeky smile and a small nod to continue. Hesitantly, Levi places the papaya on the counter and gets up to grab a knife and cutting board.

When he returns, Eren is still leaning on the counter, prepared to watch him cut into this foreign object. Levi carefully places the knife over the center and holds the side of the rounded fruit to avoid being cut.

The knife slides through and reveals a bright orangey yellow inside. Levi can’t help but be taken aback, based on the skin he had been expecting green.

Eren chuckles and takes over from there, slicing it up into little bite-sized chunks. Levi watches over his shoulder all the while, mesmerized by this strange fruit on his counter.

“Here, try a piece.” Eren pushes the cutting board toward Levi, making sure to not touch the fruit directly due to Levi’s strong dislike of germs.

Slowly, Levi brings the tiniest chunk he could find toward his mouth. “Wait- you eat a piece too.” Eren shakes his head with a smile and grabs his own piece.

“Ready?” In unison, they put the fruit in their mouths and begin chewing, Eren with familiarity and Levi with caution.

Slowly, as the flavor absorbs, Levi’s eyes grow wide and a faint smile begins on his face. “This shit is good!” He reaches for another piece as soon as he’s finished, his face alight with wonder.

“Glad you like it! It’ll supply you with more than enough vitamin C on the daily, and it tastes great in smoothies too! You can even-” Levi cuts Eren off by shoving a chunk of papaya in his mouth.

“Just shut up and enjoy it, brat.”
