Baddha Konasana, aka Bound Angle Pose, is a relaxing stretch that opens the thighs, groin and knees. Traditional texts claim that it reduces fatigue and destroys all disease. This is pose is always a wonderful way to begin to wind down a rigorous class as these yogis here are doing.

The earlier you get up, the more time you have in your day to get everything done, which, like yoga lessens stress levels. So, join me Thursday morning at 6:30am @sanghayogashala to watch the sunrise as you open your body and mind to the infinite possibilities of the day ahead. See you there!

The snow may be beautiful, but trudging around in it with the added freezing temperatures makes your body tight and feel out of whack. So join me this weekend in Williamsburg or Greenpoint to realign, let go of workweek stress and perhaps burn some extra calories in advance of the upcoming Valentines’s Day chocolate onslaught. Half Bound Triangle is a major favorite of mine and almost always included in my classes. A deep chest, hamstring and hip opener but also a leg and core strengthener, this pose has got it all. Expect to explore this pose in both my Thursday classes listed below.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I adore Shoulderstand, aka Sarvangasana. It’s truly a yoga super pose as it opens the chest and shoulders, lengthens the spine, brings fresh blood to the thyroid, helps with circulation and very efficiently moves lymph around the body giving you a mega immune system boost. Rarely do I ever teach a class where I leave this amazing pose out. If the chilling cold is making you feel a bit less than healthy, hold it for 2 to 3 minutes and get your lymph nodes buzzing.

Crow, aka Bakasana, is the root of all yoga arm balances and inversions. It can definitely seem scary when you first attempt to balance the weight of your body, on your hands, your face hovering just a few inches from the ground. But with practice, and the knowledge of which muscles to engage (think core), you start to lift and fly and decide that perhaps there are more arm balances in your future. Watching students stick this pose for the first time is always fun as their excitement becomes contagious. Expect to become contagiously excited, and leave feeling strong and open in and after all of my classes this weekend listed below.

The temperature may have dropped 30 degrees or so since yesterday but that won’t stop us from having a wonderful weekend. Join me on Saturday and Sunday to warm up from the inside out with plenty of detoxifying twists, deep hip openers and balancing poses to make you soar into the rest of your day. I truly cannot think of a better way to start the day than with yoga. And with the current NYC ice and slush situation, after today everyone’s body will need a realignment. So join me Thursday morning at 6:30am @sanghayogashala to end the week on a high note.

Spring is finally here! Like a blank slate it’s up to us to bring the color, the positive actions, the energy into this new season and see what we can create. Taking time for yoga helps to bring us more into the present and therefore helps with creativity and focus. Meet me on the mat at any or all of the classes listed below to see this for yourself. ✨

After a day of being cramped up inside due to snowstorm Stella, lengthening out with some yoga is ideal. Whether you join me Wednesday morning at 8am for Core Vinyasa @sanghayogashala, or Wednesday night at 7:30pm for Vinyasa @lucentyoga, your body will thank you regardless. Expect plenty of deep openers in the hips and chest with some ab work for extra fun. See you soon!

Dolphin Pose, aka Forearm Downdog, is amazing shoulder and chest opener. This pose also opens the hamstrings, strengthens the forearms and relaxes the mind. Walking the feet in towards the arms and holding up one leg in downdog split is great prep for Forearm Stand. We will be exploring this pose and more in my classes today and this weekend. See you there!

Halasana or Plow Pose is not only fantastic for your thyroid, shoulders and spine but it also feels amazing on your lower back. Instead of doing the more commonly practiced version with tucked toes, I’m practicing the Ashtanga version of Plow, with untucked, pointed toes, in the photo above. This stretches out the shin muscles versus the calves. We will be getting into our Plow and many other poses today in my 5pm Vinyasa class at Sangha Yoga Shala. Hope to see you there!

Karnapidasana, otherwise known as Pressure on the Ear Pose, is part of Ashtanga Primary Series. In Vinyasa it is usually practiced after Plough or Shoulder Stand. This pose is extremely relaxing and fantastic for opening the opening the shoulders and chest as well as lengthening the spine.

For those who have neck sensitivity place a blanket under your back and shoulders.  This allows more space for your neck and therefore creates less of a curve, relieving pressure.  Make sure that the blanket does NOT come under your neck though, otherwise you are creating MORE pressure on your neck.

Backbends are extremely beneficial in our modern day lives. Sitting at a desk tends to make one hunch over, tightening the hips and chest and encouraging bad posture. Backbends like Cobra (shown above) counter act the daily hours spent at a desk by opening the chest, shoulders and psoas, lengthening the spine and strengthening the back muscles. Join me this weekend in Manhattan and BK to realign after the busy workweek and feel your best going into fall. Times and studios listed below:

With a new moon and a new season upon us, change and new beginnings are in the air. Although these things are good they can often leave you feeling a bit ungrounded. In times like this, yoga always brings me back to center and allows me to be open to all of the new possibilities and beauty of change. Join me today and this weekend, in BK and Manhattan to re-center yourself for summer.
