King Pigeon is a very beautiful but intense pose. It opens the hips, both front and back, as well as the chest and shoulders, and last but certainly not least opens the spine with a lengthening backbend. Therefore, it can take a good deal of time of regular yoga practice before this pose is achievable because it requires so much flexibility. Join me Monday morning at 9:30am @lucentyoga where we will be moving and opening towards that gorgeous goal.

Matter without spirit is a corpse. Spirit without matter is a ghost.“ - Marion Woodman

Yoga joins the body and mind, spirit and matter, so that they can function at their highest levels in harmony. By doing yoga you learn to tune into the small nuances of your body, and thus become more mindful of yourself, your actions and everything around you. Hence why so many gain so much personal growth through their practice. Join me on Wednesday and Thursday to explore this gorgeous practice and create a better affinity between your physical and spiritual selves.

The snow may be beautiful, but trudging around in it with the added freezing temperatures makes your body tight and feel out of whack. So join me this weekend in Williamsburg or Greenpoint to realign, let go of workweek stress and perhaps burn some extra calories in advance of the upcoming Valentines’s Day chocolate onslaught. The earlier you get up, the more time you have in your day to get everything done, which, like yoga lessens stress levels. So, join me Thursday morning at 6:30am @sanghayogashala to watch the sunrise as you open your body and mind to the infinite possibilities of the day ahead. See you there!

Dolphin Push-ups are an old favorite of mine for building arm, shoulder and core strength. A few years ago I used to do them daily to build forearm strength so that my wrists wouldn’t hurt from being on my hands so much. Luckily one of my students reminded me of this, so you may see them woven into my classes this week listed below. Remember…bikini season is around the corner. 💪🏻👙😉

Revolved Triangle, aka Parivrtta Trikonasana, is an intense hamstring and lower back stretch, which strengthens the legs and core. I love how open my entire backbody feels after coming into this pose. Join me today and this weekend at any or all of the classes listed below to let go of the workweek, realign and open your body so that you can get the most out of your weekend repose.

Crow, aka Bakasana, is the root of all yoga arm balances and inversions. It can definitely seem scary when you first attempt to balance the weight of your body, on your hands, your face hovering just a few inches from the ground. But with practice, and the knowledge of which muscles to engage (think core), you start to lift and fly and decide that perhaps there are more arm balances in your future. Watching students stick this pose for the first time is always fun as their excitement becomes contagious. Expect to become contagiously excited, and leave feeling strong and open in and after all of my classes this weekend listed below.

Conquering headstand is always a big milestone for any yogi. I always tell my students that the tough part of this pose is getting into it, not “being” in it, because you have to use your abs to lift your legs up. Therefore, an amazing core exercise, as well as great headstand prep, is to lower and lift your legs from the initial ball shape to hip height with either bent or straight legs. Doing this will strengthen your entire torso and help you learn to stabilize within the shape while your legs are in motion, making headstand a cinch.

Spring is on its way here, at least for the next two days. Time to start thinking about what’s underneath our giant sweaters and shifting towards carrying less weight physically and mentally. So join me for some invigorating Vinyasa Flow to flip your attitude from Winter to Spring and open your body to the fun adventures ahead. Times and studios listed below.

Low Lunge Twist is an expansive opening pose. I usually sequence this pose in the beginning of class to help warm up the legs since they need to firmly engage and open the chest. The more you pull your top shoulder back, the deeper the stretch across the shoulders and chest. We will be doing some serious chest opening, as well as leg strengthening in both my morning classes @sanghayogashala listed below.
Wed 8am - Core Vinyasa
Thursday 6:30am - Yoga Express Hour

Anyone who knows me, knows that I adore Shoulderstand, aka Sarvangasana. It’s truly a yoga super pose as it opens the chest and shoulders, lengthens the spine, brings fresh blood to the thyroid, helps with circulation and very efficiently moves lymph around the body giving you a mega immune system boost. Rarely do I ever teach a class where I leave this amazing pose out. If the chilling cold is making you feel a bit less than healthy, hold it for 2 to 3 minutes and get your lymph nodes buzzing.

Parsvottanasana, aka Intense Side Side Stretch Pose, is an intense hamstring and spine lengthener. Adding the reverse prayer helps to open the chest and shoulders as well as strengthen the core and legs as they need to be engaged to hold the balance. This pose helps to calm the mind as it requires full concentration which forces one into the present moment. Join me both Wednesday and Thursday morning for class at the times listed below to start your day feeling present, open and strong. ✨

If Monday’s tend to make you feel twisted, upside down and out of sorts then I’ve got your solution. Join me for 9:30am Vinyasa @lucentyoga where we will bind, open and realign our bodies and minds so that Monday starts out strong and stays on course all day long. See you soon!

Although some of my students may think that I just make up crazy core exercises for fun, they’re actually very effective for improving arm balances and inversions. Rocking back and forth from boat pose to crow not only strengthens your abs and arms but also helps you tune into which muscles to engage to hold your crow for perhaps a second longer than usual, and give you the ability to weave it more easily into your regular practice. ✨

If high temps like today and vinyasa flow are your fave ways to detox and get open, then I’ve got some great news. This Tuesday morning you have 2 opportunities to sweat out every last bit of your Monday with me @tangerinehotpoweryoga. Come to either my 7am or 8:30am class where we will find new lightness and strength within the heat so that you can float out into your day. ✨

Tree Pose, Vrksasana, is probably one of the most commonly known yoga poses. Tree strengthens the legs and abs (gotta pull them in and up for balance) while opening the hips and thighs. This pose is wonderful for improving balance and concentration. If you want to master your tree make sure to lock your eyes on one stationary object, and remember those abs for stability. You will definitely get a chance to work on your tree in any of my classes listed below this weekend. Hope to see you there!

Devotional Warrior, aka Humble Warrior, was initially one of my least favorite poses. Although I had plenty of flexibility when I was a beginner, I didn’t have the strength or very good balance, so I would sometimes tip over in this pose. But, many years later, it’s one of my preferred asanas for the intense chest and hip openers as well as all of the leg strength it has helped me build. Join me tonight at 7pm @sanghayogashala for Vinyasa and Wednesday morning at 7:30am for Core Vinyasa and see what this magical pose can do for you.
