Inspired by The Island Beneath the Sea but Isabel Allende (which I do not own at all) or The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

This is the last of the original chapters. After Prompts in Panem, look for chapter four.

Happy Sunday!

Six Sentence Sunday - The Pearl of the Antilles, Chapter 4

The Run to You outtake that I was slowly working on is almost done. I’m debating on whether to hold on to it for PIP or just write something else. We shall see.

Meanwhile, in the spirit of Finish-a-Fic month hosted by everlarkianarchives, which has been extended to the end of September, I’m going to give The Pearl of the Antilles a go and get it done. It was taken down but I will be reposting pending a new banner by loving-mellark. It’s a hard write, language-wise but it is a lot of fun.

This story is inspired by the Violette Boisier/Etienne Relais storyline in the novel Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende. Many thanks to esq2u for suggesting that this storyline needed to be Everlarked!

Here is a bit of artwork that the talented ghtlovesthg did for it. It’s from a future chapter and I don’t want to spoil it.

And here is a snippet of chapter 4. I warn you. I wrote it for S2SL last year and it is NSFW af.

Summary:

Historical AU set in Saint Domingue (French Territory) in 1790, one year before the Haitian Slave Uprising.  Capitaine Peeta Mellark is the ruthless, incorruptible Captain of the French Army in Le Cap, Saint Domingue.  Katniss Everdeen is the daughter of a wealthy French merchant and mulatto mother.  After the death of her parents and the dissolution of her father’s estate, Katniss survives by becoming one of the most sought after courtesans in Le Cap.  A chance encounter in a Saturday market leads to a passionate affair set against the backdrop of one of the most brutal slave uprisings in recent history.

Excerpt:

“You are a Captain!” Katniss exclaimed. “You cannot!”

“My loyalty is first and foremost to you. King, my country, even God himself, cannot contravene my allegiance to you,” he said with a ferocity that could not be questioned. He was pleased to see Katniss visibly trembled at his vehemence and watched as the Loa descend on her, darkening her eyes, sending her magic through her blood and setting her ablaze for him as he burned for her.

He grasped her arms and pulled her towards him. “But I will not tolerate the name of any man on your lips. You will forget them all!” He kissed her roughly, and Katniss gasped beneath his lips. He was a man possessed as he took her back to their bed, pushing her down onto it and crawling over her. He pinned her mouth with his own as his strong fingers sought out her center and, finding it wet and waiting, squeezed it in his large hand.  “If I could rip from your memory the name of every man who ever passed an eye or hand over you, I would do it and trade half my soul with the Devil himself for the privilege!  But I do not have this power. So you must give me your word never, ever to speak of these things again!”  He hovered over her, ready to have her but not before she’d acquiesced to him.

Wi, met, mwen’, I promise,” she whispered with a wicked gleam in her eye and he did not miss the irony of Katniss calling him Master in her native tongue when it was he who was completely under her thrall.

Originally written for S2SL, 2014, edited and reposted.

I had originally pulled this story to rewrite as an original fic. However, the core story is far too close to the original story line that inspired it that I opted to complete this story as an Everlark fanfic instead. That is not to say that I am not interested in writing an original, Caribbean-centered, supernatural romance. But this will not be that story.

I’ve brought back the weekly HG Fanfic Rec for each story. I missed having that self-imposed rigor of reading a story to rec for each of my chapters.  Check out the featured story of the chapter, written by stacylk.

This story will always be dedicated to my friend, esq2u, who originated the idea that Violette Boisier and Etienne Relais’ storyline should be Everlarked.  Thank you for recommending Allende’s book to me and giving me a new and persistent obsession.

Thanks also to the incomparable solesofwind, who recommended a list of the most exquisite French love songs. I have listened to more amazing music in these last two weeks than I have in a long time. She is also the exceptional artist who drew all of the banners for Prompts in Panem. Head over to her site and check out her work.

I also dedicate this chapter to my long-time friend, collaborator and beta, solasvioletta. She doesn’t come on tumblr often but she is an important person in my life. Thank you…for everything.

Happy Reading, folks!

Many thanks to my prereaders, @thegirlfromoverthepond and @akai-echo. They are not only prereaders but  my friends. @thegirlfromoverthepond, in particular, makes sure my French is not horrible and my facts of French court are not grossly incorrect. @akai-echo has made a splendid aesthetic that I am linking here. Please take the opportunity to look at it. It is truly one of the most beautiful edits I have ever had the pleasure of receiving. Be sure to head over to her tumblr and let her know how amazing she is.  She has been so instrumental in motivating me and keeping my focus on this story.  Sometimes, interest in one’s own work can flag but her enthusiasm and feedback have been essential in the continuation of this fic.  Thank you, friends!

Also, the first line of this fic is a homage to one of my all-time favorite fics, The Colour of Heartbreak, by @alatarielgildaen. Please read it if you havent done so! Finally, many thanks to @loving-mellark, @ghtlovesthg  and @wwrebel1992 for the amazing banners!  See them all below the cut:
