2003 Château Léoville Poyferré

Bordeaux is always special for me and this is a fabulous wine from the region. This guy still smells young - cassis, blackberries, fresh tobacco, spicebox, violets, and fresh leather with a hint of a red fruit note. Tons of cassis and violets on the palate with fresh young tobacco, spicebox, leather, nutmeg, and a hint of eucalyptus. Beautifully structured. Elegant tannins. Round finish. Lovely!

2002 Château Léoville-Las Cases “Grand Vin de Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases”

This is some special stuff - Léoville Las Cases is a neighbor to the famed Château Latour and by many accounts, deserves to be a Premier Grand Cru Classé as well! Blackberries, cassis, purple potpourri, eucalyptus, leather, and meat with fruit compote on the nose. Definite minerality on the nose as well (even a bit tinny on first opening the bottle). Ripe and rich blackberries, cassis, and perfumed violets on the palate with a hint of cocoa and a lovely finish. Nice acidity and fine tannins. Delicious!

2003 Château Léoville Barton

Seeing double! Tons of cassis. Barnyard and fresh leather. Black licorice. Spicebox. Violets. Rocabar. Softer tannins but a bit more one-dimensional on the palate. Ripe black plum at the forefront. Secondary and tertiary notes take a backseat. Almost Californian in character on the palate - can taste the heat in the vintage. Can age more.
