In the Country (1916). Leon Kroll (American, 1884-1974). Oil on canvas. Detroit Institute of Arts.
In the Country shows Kroll’s unerring sense of composition. Painted with verve and directness, it shows an extended family in a landscape setting. A young woman stands as her baby crawls nearby. A woman in an apron handles apples in a basket. In the mid ground, a balding man and a white haired woman, perhaps the grandparents, read to a blonde girl who sits on a swing.
