Onoclea sensibilis

Sensitive fern seed heads

observed April 11 at Lenoir Nature Preserve, Yonkers, NY

Diane told that me that this fern holds its spores all winter in the beads, releasing the spores only in the early spring, when the leaves are down and the wind can travel through the forest more thoroughly.  Summer photos will note the “once-cut” leaf and in winter I also hope to catch its ‘sensitivity' to frost, from which the name derives.
