Note: Includes Soulmate AU Changki and Kid!Minhyuk.
Only four years old and Minhyuk creates enough sunshine within his personality to radiate happiness in rays upon everyone that stands in his presence. He’s so wide-eyed and curious about everything. He’s sweet, and careful and loud that Kihyun can barely resist putting up a fight. Even in his most mischievous moments, Kihyun can’t stay mad at his nephew, because his big, sorrowful, watering eyes make him soften up so much that his shout barely comes out as a whisper.
It’s night time now, and Minhyuk is tucked up in the spare room of Kihyun’s apartment. He’s bounded under the blankets cosily, and he hugs a brown bear close this his chest as Kihyun sits at his beside, shifting through the books that Hyunwoo had packed inside his suitcase.
“Kihyun, instead of a story, can you tell me about soulmates?”
The innocence that laces through the tone of his nephew catches Kihyun off guard. He looks at Minhyuk and frowns, “Where did you hear about soulmates?”
“Daddy told me about them, he says everyone has one. Do I have one? What is a soulmate?”
Kihyun holds his hands up to stop the bombing of questions. “Alright, alright. I’ll tell you about soulmates. Just, one question at a time, alright kiddo?”
Minhyuk grins widely, “Okay, so what’s a soulmate?”
Kihyun breathes in, how can he explain such a concept to his nephew?
Because when he thinks of soulmates, he thinks of gleaming stars on new years eve, blue-lace delphinium and hands clutching together for warmth against the cold. He thinks of strength and happiness and love. He could tell his nephew about the nights he’d spend in coffee shops, the mornings spent wrapped up in bedsheets or long days wasted away talking about everything and nothing at all.
“A soulmate is someone you’re fated to be with. A best friend, I suppose”
“Like in fairytales?” Minhyuk gleamed.
Kihyun laughed, “Well, yeah, I guess so.”
“Do I have a soulmate?” Minhyuk inquired.
“Everyone has a soulmate.”
“Do you have a soulmate?”
Kihyun smiled at his nephew fondly, “And what do you think Changkyun is, huh?”
Minhyuk frowned, “But Changkyun isn’t your best friend. I saw you kiss!”
Kihyun was somewhat taken back, “Okay best friend isn’t exactly the right way to put it. A soulmate is more than a best friend- wait, hang on, when did you see that?”
Minhyuk pulled a face, grimacing. “Last night, in the kitchen. You were kissing and then Changkyun was smelling your neck. Did you wear perfume?”
Kihyun pursed his lips, “Yes… I was wearing perfume.” that was not a line of events he was willing to tell his four year old nephew about; that was a story for another day.
“And then you went upstairs. Did Changkyun want some of your perfume too?”
Kihyun blinked a few times. “Yes… he wanted my… perfume- okay, I think it’s time for you to sleep now.”
“But I still have more questions about soulmates.” Minhyuk argued, his eyes drifting tiredly even though he fought to keep them open.
“Tomorrow, okay?” Kihyun soothed, rubbing Minhyuk’s forehead and successfully getting his tired eyes to fall.
“Na night, Kihyun.”
He then stood, smiling down at his nephew as his breathing deepened. He was so innocent, and Kihyun was almost sad to think it wouldn’t stay forever. He felt a pair of arms collect his waist, and he slumped into the touch, laughing a little as he felt feathery kisses against his neck.
“It’s hard to describe what a soulmate is.”
“It’s the one person in the world that knows you better than anyone else. It’s someone who makes you a better person. Actually, they don’t make you a better person, you do that yourself because they inspire you. A soul mate is someone who you carry with you forever.” Changkyun whispered against the crook of Kihyun’s neck, his breath spreading warmth where his words hit.
“Smart ass.” Kihyun responded, his words loss of meaning.
“All I have to do is think of you and it flows naturally.” Changkyun smiled as Kihyun turned in his arms to kiss him. It was electrifying.
“Come on, before he sees us again.” Kihyun laughed quietly.
“Again?” Changkyun frowned as Kihyun pulled him for a long night of embracing of their shared room.
