lechfeld

Otto the Great (912-973).

Son of Henry the Fowler and a powerful medieval ruler. As a king of Germans he enhanced crowns power vis-a-vis local magnates and defeated pagan Magyars in battle of Lechfeld in 955. For the latter achievement he was hailed as a saviour of Christendom. A few years later otto conquered the kingdom of Italy and became consequently the first Holy Roman Emperor in 962.

The Battle of Lechfeld (10 August 955), often seen as the defining event for holding off the incursions of the Hungarians into Western Europe, was a decisive victory by Otto I the Great, King of the Germans, over the Hungarian leaders, the harka (military leader) Bulcsú and the chieftains Lél (Lehel) and Súr.

Located south of Augsburg, the Lechfeld is the flood plain that lies along the Lech River. The battle appears as the Battle of Augsburg in Hungarian historiography. It was followed up by the Battle of Recknitz in October.

It was the first national German battle against a foreign enemy.

-Kazuma Kaneko’s depiction of Michael and traditional depictions

Since I already wrote about Gabriel and Uriel here is a Michael article:

“Who is like God?”

Michael is the most popular, most famous and strongest of all angels.
His name Mi-kha-el means “Who is like God?” which is basically a rhetorical question (answer: no one) which Michael asks the devil before he falls into the abyss.

His symbols are a sword, scales, armor and trampling on the devil/serpent/dragon. He is often depicted in orange/red, blue and with blond hair. Kaneko’s version is based on Jacob Epstein’s statue of Michael defeating the devil.
He is often depicted with an ultra-manly face in contrast to Gabriel’s soft feminine features. His element in Judaism is snow/ice and in Christianity it is fire. Gabriel’s element in Judaism is fire and in Christianity water in contrast.
On his shield or armor you can sometimes read „Quis ut Deus“ („Who is like God?“) or the Christ-Monogram „IHS“.
He is the protector of Israel and after the battle on Lechfeld in 955 a patron of the Holy Roman Empire and later Germany.
Michael despite being a warrior is however also often said to be a healer.

In the book of Daniel it is said that he joined Gabriel in a fight against a “prince of Persia”. This most likely is the basis for Gabriel’s obligation to fight by Michael’s side in SMT. They are also often drawn together on paintings.

According to Revelation 12,7 EU he defeats the dragon/devil who then falls onto earth. It also becomes clear that he is a soldier angel (he is often associated with/ a patron of soldiers) and his name is said to be a war cry of the angel army. With his scales he weighs the souls of people on the Judgment Day which is similar to Anubis’ role and he guides the souls which is kinda similar to Hermes.

According to the New Testament (Book of Jude) he also argued with the devil about the corpse of Moses.
He also prevented Isaac from being sacrificed by his father according to several traditions.
