learn hair

Hi! I’m a white person with a black girl oc and I was wondering if you knew about any resources to learn about African hair. I pretty much know nothing about any hair but I know African hair is versatile in a lot of ways that Caucasian hair isn’t, and I’d like to portray that accurately. Thanks!!

I will always point you towards @writingwithcolor as a fabulous resource about writing characters of color. There are many posts about Black hair, here are a few of my faves:

Words to describe hair (all hair types, not just Black)

I suggest following @writingwithcolor and searching simply “Black hair” in their search engine. They also have toooons of other resources. Once you’ve gathered as much research as you can (and read it), if you still have questions, read WWC’s FAQ page, and then if you still have questions, submit them a respectful message in their ask box. They are wonderful people and take the time to respond to thoughtful, well-researched questions. But do the footwork yourself first and read as much as you can!

Once you get this, you have to say five things you like about yourself, publicly. Then you have to send this to ten of your favourite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool~) 🌈🌈

I also got this from @brassfannibal, @favouritealias, and @jadedbirch! YOU GUYS. 💕 I’m only doing it once because I’m too tired to think of that many things I like about me. ;p

1. My sense of humor. It is dark and sarcastic and weird, and I crack myself up all the time. I just love making people laugh and I’m pretty good at it.

2. My hair! Learning to love it has been a long and sometimes painful process but it is so striking and beautiful, and a big part of who I am.

3. I am really cuddly if I know you well, I’m super warm to the touch, and I give excellent hugs. I love how squeezable I am, I guess.

4. I am super loyal once I’m your friend. I will back you up in a fight, I will shut down anyone who says anything remotely negative about you - once I’m in your corner I’m there to stay.

5. This is weird but I’m so easy to please. You could give me a shiny rock as a gift and I’d be like wow it’s so pretty thank you!! It doesn’t take much to make me happy and that’s a fun way to go through life.

Thank you all! 🌈❤️👍😄

my foolish heart has been hopelessly waiting for the manga to cut back to a scene like this, but that’s very unlikely to happen. so i just decided to draw it for my selfish self, lol.

HE DIDN’T DENY IT…

Hairstyles and realizations

*whispers* guess whose favorite asshole just officially became a main character !!!!

I think we should focus on admiring what a dedicated actor Kyungsoo is. Just for Swing Kids he’s been practicing tap dancing for months, he learned to speak with a north korean dialect, and he shaved his head which is a pretty big deal considering his image as an idol. All this while rehearsing and recording for two comebacks. Oh, and he also enrolled in university. Do Kyungsoo truly is an inspiration for us all.

Shout out to the black girl in the early stages of her natural hair journey..

Spending all your money on different products.

Spending hours on the internet reading and learning about natural hair.

Researching different supplements.

Trying to master different oils.

Admiring beautiful heads of natural hair while you’re in class.

Creating folders on your computer with titles like “Natural Hair Inspo” and “Hair Goals” filled with all your natural hair inspiration pictures.

Measuring your hair like every 3 days to see how much it grew.

Wondering maybe if it just isn’t in your genetics (it is, you can do this! Don’t doubt yourself).

Randomly getting pissed off sometimes because you want to protective style your hair, but you still want your hair style to be considered “cute” so you’re struggling to find that golden protective hairstyle that’s going to allow your hair to retain length, but still make you feel confident when you’re out and about.

Sitting in your room multiplying the length of 6 inches by however many years it’s going to take for you to reach your goal..

Wondering why your curls don’t clump like the girls on YouTube. (Don’t worry sweetheart, they clump like yours. And that’s beautiful too.)

Frustrated because some girl went natural AFTER you and now her hair is longer than yours. (Chill. She’s not better than you, don’t even let that thought enter your mind. She just found what methods work for her, all you need to do is find what works for you.)

Got ridiculed when you wore weave, now you get ridiculed for your natural texture. You’ll learn not to care either way, it all comes with time.

I’ve been there.. Trust me when I say consistency is key. Stay consistent and stay patient. You’ve got this.
