leading creative

Cinco de Mayo is about to start, so let's make some things clear:

Hello there! Diego here! (That… that’s seriously my name.) As some of you may know, I am of Mexican origin, and I would like to make a few things clear about May 5th you may or may not be aware about.

1. Cinco de Mayo is NOT the date of the Independence of Mexico.

That’s right! Mexico celebrates its independence in September 16th, or more likely, the night of September 15th, when traditionally they make the traditional Grito de Independencia by midnight, which is a reenactment of the legend of the night revolutionary priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called mass in 1810 for the people to rebel against the Spanish government.

“Cinco de Mayo” also known as “La Batalla de Puebla” (The Battle of Puebla) is a commemoration of a victory in the battle against French invaders that arrived from the port of the state of Veracruz. Albeit not a strategically decisive battle on the war, it is important on national pride as a moment in which a tiny new country without virtually any funds by the time of 1860s defeated such a super powerful army which were the French.

2. “Sombreros”.

Ah yes.

The “sombrero”.

Just to put it straight: Sombrero just means “hat” in Spanish; at least Mexican Spanish. We tend to call sombrero to any kind of hat, that is if we are not using the word “gorro/gorra” alternatively.

The “sombreros” you usually see in every single stereotype you may imagine are based a mixture of the charro outfit and the way poor proletariats would dress around the dawn of the 20th century whom also were an emblem of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. (Another national celebration that goes in November 20th.) Slavery was already illegal in Mexico, but these people were exploited in a disguised system in which the workers were paid (miserably) and all of their expenses would be controlled in stores they were only allowed to spend at; those stores were also owned by the proprietors of the land they worked at.

The stereotype has been so reflected in so many places inside and outside the border it has even been reclaimed by the Mexican people themselves.

“Oh, so is it okay for me to wear one?”

No.

By the way when I mentioned “charros”, I mean a traditional type of horsemen that follow their own set of etiquettes and styles, and it’s also practiced by women who are not only beautiful but also super badass.

3. Maracas.

I SERIOUSLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH MEXICAN STEREOTYPES AND MARACAS TO BE HONEST.

LIKE, THEY ARE USED IN A FEW CULTURES OF MEXICO SUCH AS THE YAQUIS, BUT OTHER THAN THAT IT REALLY DOESN’T HAVE MUCH OF A CULTURAL BACKGROUND FOR MEXICO. ALMOST ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN LATIN AMERICA, BUT NOT MUCH IN MEXICO.

THEY ARE MORE OF A BRAZILIAN THING.EDIT: Actually no, they are not Brazlian at all either.

Much like the sombrero, if you “went to Mexico” (Tijuana, Cancún, Mazatlán, Rocky Point) and they gave you maracas with vivid colors on them, there is absolutely no cultural importance behind it as souvenir of Mexico. Mexicans love to point at, laugh, and exploit the cultural obliviousness of tourists. Especially American tourists.

*cough*

4. The mustache.

This one is a bit strange, albeit kind of true in some regards.

The mustache is an international symbol of masculinity, and Mexico is a country full of machismo, albeit “caballerosidad” is also one of the qualities in the Mexican etiquette which involves respecting the autonomy and individual identity of women, always approach to a non-violent solution, and a general attitude of politeness to both men and women; that said it is not impossible for a Mexican to be misogynistic as well.

ANYWAY, the mustache is kind of a downhill-snowball stereotype that may have started in just seeing many Mexicans having a mustache, but so do a LOT of American males as well, so uhhhh… it’s a very strange label to pin on Mexicans over all.

5. Tequila.

I actually don’t mind if you drink tequila. You kinda support the economy of my country and it’s an actual cultural thing that I like it when it’s spread around.

Just remember that it is NOT drunk with a worm in it. That is mezcal. Its like tequila’s wilder cousin. And no, it has no mescaline.

6. Other stereotypes.

  • Sugar skulls are a cool thing, I guess. No, they have absolutely nothing to do with Cinco de Mayo, they are part of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) which is celebrated in November 1st.
  • “Do not drink the water” is a weird stereotype I have heard. I would not simply recommend you to drink untreated tap water anywhere. Period. We have water purifiers everywhere.
  • Mexico is what I call a “second world country”. It is not as developed and advanced as the United States, but it IS civilized in a great way we count with continuous technological developments and lots and lots of progressist enthusiasts.
  • Mexico is not proud of drug trafficking. It’s an extremely serious problem that has the entire country terrorized and I am really exhausted of all the attention they get from dumb Hollywood movies rather than the real Mexico. Do not talk about drugs. Do not talk about narcos. This is a very delicate topic that many people overlook the impact it’s had with Mexican people in their identity. Please.

  • I persist. Do not, seriously, DO NOT associate Mexican people with drug dealers, drug lords, “narcos”, or any other extension. If you seriously STILL wonder “what the big deal is”, I dare you to Google “narcos” on the image search and look at all the horrible things they do to the innocents. (It’s seriously fucked up and triggering with blood, gore, body horror shit.)
  • Mexican people have contributed with some groundbreaking contributions to science and technology and the way we are leading our lives.
  • > Mario J. Molina is a chemist who discovered the causes of ozone depletion in the atmosphere.

    > Guillermo González Camarena patented the first trichromatic TV color transmitter in 1940. 8 years before Peter Carl Goldmark presented it to CBS and took most of the credit.

    > Luis Ernesto Miramontes co-developed “the pill”. Props.

    > Andrés Manuel del Río discovered vanadium in 1801 which is used to strengthen steel further and is applied from bicycles and hardware tools, to dental implants and jet engines.

  • Yes, Mexicans are actually laid back. No, they are not inherently lazy.
  • Mexican people are culturally masters of improvisation and creativity, this leads them to engineer creative solutions to everyday problems. Just felt like sharing this fact.

Ok so this is all I have right off the bat, and I wish you a happy Cinco de Mayo. Have fun, get drunk, party on; I don’t care, we don’t care. Just have these things on mind.

TL;DR: Please do not do/say anything racist.

The signs:

Aries: Something about you makes my blood boil in a unique, uncomfortable way, you are full of mystery. You have black holes for eyes, remarkably, that are too intense for most people to look into. You have no control over your greatness, you were born this way. Notice it and blossom. Not a single person on earth can blossom like you can. Not a single person can blossom like you will. You have great and empowering words to say in this life, make sure to say all of them without fear. You are not afraid. Be great.

Taurus: You are so lovely, the embodiment of nature, the embodiment of all the naturality in life created by the one and only, engulfing creator. I remember losing you and all nature that surrounded me seemed to shrivel and die. My heart ached when I heard the crunch under my feet of every dead leaf I walked upon. It brought me so much pain, i felt like death. I lost my vision and a bright white light came over me, fading into a soft glow and all I could see was your face. If I was dying, this was my glimpse of heaven, it made me want to die. I would rather die with your image in my mind than not have you in such a short, sometimes seemingly meaningless life such as this one. Perhaps you were just too lovely to be with someone like me, perhaps too lovely to be in my filthy grasp. You are my glimpse of heaven. How I long to be able to tell you that. How I long to be able to sing to you and whisper you the sweet words I never did. I am so sorry.

Gemini: I feel so naked when I’m with you. You strip me of my walls, you strip me of my guarded defenses, leaving me completely and utterly vulnerable. You shatter any mental boundaries I possess. You open my mind to the awareness of a mind. You show me to simply have a mind, such a power house is astonishing. You leave me breathless with your aura and creative, rhythmic way of speaking to everyone. You introduce open mindedness like no other, freedom like no other, a genius. With you, losing my mind and falling into madness is okay, almost a necessity. In life there simply seems to never be enough time. You show me how to embrace the lack of time we all have, you show me that death is the inevitable and that its not as important as we make it. The important thing is to experience life fully, entirely, with every part of our being. To be thankful of the rare oddity, the rare adventure we have all been gifted with called life, to dance with the music of life. I swear I’m out of my mind and that’s a wonderfully beautiful thing. Thank you for teaching me that.

Cancer: I would make love to you in the sweetest, most enticing way because I deeply believe you deserve to be made love to like no other. I hope you remain soft, I hope you have the strength to. I say this even though I know you will. You have always remained selfless, you have always remained kind, somehow. I do not understand how someone can turn such pain into beauty. Your creations are just as beautiful as you are, that is so admirable. You shock people with such generosity, you are completely, utterly and naturally divine to the point you are unhealthly wanted by every pair of eyes, even the blind. I swear its like the blind regain their sight in your presence. People notice you in a crowd, don’t doubt that. People especially notice you when you think you are not being noticed. You are the most beautiful conscious being and that will never change. You have angel lips as sweet as honey, your voice is melodic. I have always ached and dreamed for you to love me. Please one day love someone like me. Your being is so lovely that I can’t help myself from hopelessly weeping. You are a walking art piece, a priceless masterpiece. I lost everything the first time I looked in your eyes. I lost everything.

Leo: Remember that people want to be like you, just as much as you want to be like them. You can be admirable of others, you absolutely can be, but live your life knowing without a doubt that you are the best there is. Countless people admire you and want to be just like you. Effortlessly you shine brighter than the sun itself and when you smile, every pair of knees weaken, instinctively and inescapably bowing down to the ingenius design you are. Your mind and appearance radiate exuberance. I pray you can fathom just how special and gifted you are because you yourself are the unfathomable. You are inspiration and ambition, the abstract dreams I have at night that inspire my creativity, that lead me to create the never before seen. You are surrealistic art, our God’s most treasured and individualistic specimen. You are not only that but also the sun that lights the entire sky, you are the sun beams that sink into and warm my skin when I stand in such brilliant light. You are the light that keeps me from opening my eyes, preventing blindness but how I foolishly dont mind and long to go blind by such greatness.

Virgo: You remind me of sleep but you also remind me of night terrors. I feel like I don’t know who you are, slightly fearing you. Seemingly the most difficult puzzle to put together. I wonder and ponder if you are the worlds never ending puzzle, if I will ever figure you out, i have never been able to entirely comprehend your depth and mystery. You are almost frightening, shockingly and startlingly enchanting. You are hypnotic and maneuver with magic. I do not know the depth of your mind and apart of me never wants to. I enjoy the enigma you are, forever intriguing and intelligent. Ask me personal, peculiar questions and I will unintentionally and completely open up to you, instinctively trusting you. Your questions are always intense yet tender, your mind must be filled to the brim with intellect and perplexing art. Your mind is a masterpiece and your soul is ethereal. Extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world. I hope you can live with and fall in love with your sly mind. I am in love. May you always be yourself, may you feel everything you are meant to feel in this life and may you surface from the darkness.

Libra: You are the bittersweet lonliness that the sad and dreamy ones feel midday, swirling like the wind, leading long, lovely hair to flow, swirlingly and gracfully making your way through clothes, sending goosebumps down backs, leaving a lasting, cold and drowzy sensation. You’re the words in a book that readers grow tiresome of until finally falling asleep, leaving them with their adventurous dreams connected to the adventurous story they just took in. I see you in every free, soaring bird. I feel you in every unique and precious song that lively birds compose. You are melody, rhythm, sound, the grand orchestra. You are poetry, expression, a famous sonnet. You walk with fearlessness, you live with each lovers name you’ve ever loved written and embedded on your flashy skin. You are autheticly rare and always ready to entirely open yourself up, to let the flowers you encompass within bloom for all to see , appreciate and mesmerize. My god, do people mesmerize you.

Scorpio: I’m so lustful of you, lustful out of complete, biting love. I’ve never fallen so deeply and madly in love with a soul, It is insanity. You are full of demons that I face from loving you everyday and I can’t imagine what it’s like to be you and live with them, deep inside, haunting and strange. I have been face to face with insanity, letting your wickedness and sin make its way within me. It all makes me more infatuated. No matter how hard I try to find your core, your raw center, I can never seem to dig deep enough, I can never seem to withstand the screams, painful howls and blackness that your inner monsters let out and intensely sophocate me with when I try. When I give up, it’s like you see my vulnerability and you see it as me being submissive, knowing this is when you can strip me naked and consume me entirely, this is when you know and are proud of the secrets you keep from me, this is when you know you own me because I will fail to figure you out, i will fail to get anything from you yet continuously crawl back for something, for anything I can get from you. You have me in a trance that I can’t snap out of, you need the control because it brings you security and deep, sinful satisfaction. You experience a sense of peace in knowing that you can cause me to feel pain so that you won’t feel so alone and lost in your own. I want to make love to you and feel the pain I experience from being in love with you. I am incapable of leaving you alone, regardless of the sorrow i experience. I will never let you feel alone. I will feel this pain with you, right by your side, my ride or die. You are not alone. Maybe this isn’t love, maybe it is just madness but I’ve always been mad.. but not as mad as you.

Sagittarius: You are the book of everything, a book holding all the knowledge in existence. You are the infinity sign, you are lively, always hungry for life and full of wisdom. Youre the feeling you get on a hot summer day, laying in the center of a sweetly scented meadow, taking in every bit of the sun, not being able to suppress a tight smile. Feeling at complete peace, no worries or a feeling of weight on your back, feeling free and open in the mind. I want to be alone with you and hear you speak about all the things that go on in your head. I imagine you have a billion things to say, or maybe nothing to say, it doesn’t matter. All you have to do is exist and you are performing one of the most incredible things possible. People forget that simply being alive is utterly mindblowing in itself. You give inspiring advice and shock people with your spunk and inner lightening. I appreciate your uniqueness and ability to be open to every side of a spectrum. You are the instant, refreshing feeling you get from diving into a cool pool on a hot day, your my child hood memories, you are the embodiment of an entirely fulfilled life. Your soul has lived a thousand different lives, you will exist for eternity. You are existence itself. Live free and die free, make your inevitable mark on this world. It belongs to you.

Capricorn: no one’s ever ready for what you’ve got to offer to this world, you can do so much with so little and have an achingly powerful mind and aura. You don’t have to do anything to shock and mesmerize mankind, just be yourself. You change the world with your ambitious actions, you change people simply with your way of presenting yourself. You are intelligence, skillful and have the ability to accept time, accept that everything takes time. That’s something a lot of people can’t do. You can do so many things others can’t, but you are not flashy. You are low-key while remaing self assured. Maybe you experience a lot of self doubt, but im telling you right now, you shouldnt. Your jokes and attitude are like a fun house, utterly amusing and dirty, sometimes scary. You are full of original ideas that you can easily bring to life. I hope you know how much you actually benefit and effect our species. You have immense purpose, see that you are the greatest and anything you want can be obtained. I hope you know how attractive and special you are. Absolutely outstanding.

Aquarius: life is a lonesome experience, you understand that more than anyone. You carry the weight of humanity itself with you everywhere you go on your back. To fit in seems like a maze that is unsolvable. Your aquarius minds are unending, no limitations, you are mad men. Not only ingenius but geniuses yourselves. You obtain something no one else can obtain and this can never be taken away from you. Nobody quite understands what makes you different, you dont even understand it yourself but you feel it deep within your bones. “I do not belong here, I do not belong anywhere and I don’t want to belong anywhere.” So hard to comprehend or understand, you are utterly perplexing but so fucking beautiful. I can’t fully convey in words how astoundingly beautiful each and every one of you are. Let someone take a look into your eyes and theyll travel through space, adventuring and absorbing the sight of multiple universes. Let someone take a long look at your face and watch them get lost in mesmerization. Magnetic, mystifying, heartless, mythical beings. A world such as this one does not deserve you or your revolutionary touch. You are the lone, last star of each ending night, still shining brightly as the sun begins to rise. Glowing alone to express your individuality, glowing as brightly as you can until the sun puts you out but you are always going to be there again when the sun goes down and you are always going to be the last one shining when it rises again.

Pisces: you are hands that are made to create art, you are the creases in the hands of an infant. You are the start of life, the start of plant life, the start of a human life, the start of an animals life. You are the smoke from my cigarettes, dispersing through out the air. I hear you everywhere I go, echoing in the back of my head as a guide to being a better person. You make me want to be a better person. You are the sweet cherries around my sweet ice cream, you’re the soft, enchanting scented lotion I spread on my skin. You are the goosebumps left after a lovers sensitive touch. You are the feathers that fill my softest of pillows. You are the sweetest of piano music ever played. I love you. I miss you. You will be with me.

Sci-Fantasy and Technomancy

Creating a world where magic and technology co-exist

Mixing science fiction and magic can be tricky; if everyone in the world is capable of teleporting anywhere at anytime, it probably won’t make much sense for people to own cars, for example. Blending these two forces leads to countless exciting possibilities, but it can also end up creating some inconsistencies that your audience will pick up on if you don’t think things through well.

I have several tips and things you should think about if you want to build a world that mixes sci-fi and fantasy. Ultimately how detailed you get with it is up to you; maybe you want to plot out ever single tiny aspect of how your world works, or maybe you just want to have robot dragons and to hell with whoever disagrees! It’s a story of your making; if you and your audience are having fun with it, that’s what I consider most important.

Either way, here’s some things to think about!

- Of course, it helps to start off with the usual integral factors that tend to define societies; things like geography, language, religion, laws, agriculture, philosophy, etc. Before you even start throwing magic/tech into the mix, what does your world look like? What does it sound like? What does it taste like??

- How does magic work in your world? Is it a gift only available to a select few, or can pretty much any Average Joe summon a fireball? Are all mages Clerics (with magic derived from a powerful entity), Wizards (with magic learned from studying), Sorcerers (with magic just as an innate trait), or a mixture of these (and other?) things?

- How does technology (generally) work in your world? How widely available is it? How well is it understood? What level is it at; are there nanobots in everyone’s bloodstreams, or is a bronze sword considered “high technology”?

- How well do magic and technology (generally) mix in your world? Are they both just two different tools for solving problems, or opposed forces? Can one be used to study the other? Can someone be an expert on both things? What problems have been solved (and created) from blending the two?

- Are either things taboo? How much social friction do either things cause? Is the use of one meant to be secret or forbidden? Why?

- Are tech-favoring people/societies generally on equal footing with magic-favoring ones? They don’t have to be! The world being skewed in one side’s favor could be a great source of conflict!

- What can only be done with magic? What can only be done with technology? Consider the limitations of both forces in the world. Does one force typically work better in some or most ways than the other? What things simply can’t be replicated by one side?

- Consider how advanced each side is. What methods of communication, transportation, education, fuel consumption, medical care, etc are available to magic-favoring societies and which ones are available to tech-favoring societies? One side may not be exclusively better than the other; a tech-favoring society might have much faster land transportation in the form of huge cars, but a magic-favoring one might be able to magically tame huge creatures that can walk on walls and reach places tech can’t easily get to.

- (When it can,) how does magic solve the same problems as tech and vice versa? A magical stone of far-speech can fill the magic-equivalent role of a phone, for example. A manufactured chemical packet could function like a certain spell. Of course, if one side’s method is so ubiquitous and accessible, it’s more likely that all people’s will favor it.

- On the other hand, the different perspectives will likely produce entirely different problems and methods of solving them. Beyond one side being unable to replicate certain things from another, they may not want to. Mages may have no interest in creating an internet analogue they instead have access to some great collective unconscious tech-favoring people can’t access. How might one describe these things to the other? This is where the real creative world-building comes in; not every problem should be solved by just having an equally viable magic or tech version of it. Different cultures will value things differently, and exploring that leads to lots of creative worldbuilding and conflict!

- Consider what divisions might exist within societies. There are always subdivisions within groups; not all mages are as powerful, knowledgeable, or experienced as one another. Some subgroups may think themselves superior in some way, and/or might look down upon others within their own circle for all kinds of reasons. No group is a hivemind (unless they literally are); groups are made up individuals!

- Lastly (but possibly most importantly), DON’T GET TOO CAUGHT UP WITH HOW COOL YOUR WORLD IS! Consider exactly what information is relevant to the audience and what interesting ways you can show/explain it. Remember that the focus should generally remain on the characters; there’s nothing wrong with having lots of extra world-building details, but they can bog down the story in minutia if you get too off track! You can always explore and explain deeper lore in side material!

Strong female lead! Advice???????? I love when women are independent, strong and smart/witty. But how can I avoid cliches or annoying over the top demonstrations of strength? Also dealing with men that can't handle a strong female lead in the story?

Hello!

I think this article pretty well covers cliches to avoid: http://ourwriteside.com/strong-female-character-cliches-avoid/

As for annoying demonstrations of strength, think about whether it’s needed for advancing the plot. If the lead has to fight 3 bad guys at once (and she has the training to realistically do so) to get to the secret computer, then go for it. However, her fending off 10 guards in a flurry of round house kicks and throat jabs might be over doing it. Write conflicts logically and know how much your character is capable of.

Another thing to think about: If you put a male in her position, would you still think it’s over the top?

Okay, with a man that can’t handle a strong female lead just for the sake that she’s female, I will always see him as a bad dude because he’s sexist. It’s annoying when writers think that they can make it a quirky trait or a booster for sexual tension. I don’t like him. Unless you’re writing a fic where the guy gets over the sexism that was ingrained in him because of the ways of the world, I will never like him no matter his good traits. Treat him like an antagonist.

If he can’t handle a strong female lead because he wanted to be the solo leader or he doesn’t like authority figures or they have different ways of leading (ex. Bellamy and Clarke. I can always find a way to relate an ask to The 100) then that’s a different story. There will be arguments over what’s best, insults, etc. They disagree with each other just to disagree.

I feel like this didn’t help :( Anyone have more advice?

Mercury Signs

Mercury is the planet of thought and communication, the mind and our cerebral qualities. It is known as fast moving, a trickster and for being witty.

Mercury in Aries- Infuses Mercury with a bold and brash communication style bordering on authoritative. Often makes thinking go through black and white categories, yet is also known for their childlike imagination. Thoughts erupt like missiles. Can have racing thoughts.

Mercury in Taurus- Slows Mercury down, makes it methodical, efficient and attached to their own point of view. Can also infuse it with poetry and creativity in the way they think. Can lead to anxious or cyclic thinking. Memories last a lifetime here, and they can be retrospective.

Mercury in Gemini- Mercury rules Gemini, often emphasising the Mercurial traits with this placement, therefore Mercury is witty, fast paced and changeable here. May like wordplay and puzzles. Will find their curiosity peaked by many differing subjects.

Mercury in Cancer- Capable of wonderful emotional intelligence and can be talented with both creativity and more traditionally logical based subjects like finance for example. Their mind work like a mood board, changing thought patterns depending on what is in their field of experience.

Mercury in Leo- Bold thought patterns and often takes pride on their sense of belief and self. Likely communicates with style and authority, but also has a very justice orientated mind, where fairness is put to the front and center.

Mercury in Virgo- Mercury also rules Virgo, making them adept to detail orientated thoughts that can be perfectionistic. They are often good with puzzles, can flourish in fields of science, yet their attention to detail can also lead to wonderful creativity. Anxious thoughts are a possibility.

Mercury in Libra- Mercury has the ability to unite two opposing ideas in Libra, where the pros and cons of everything are weighed carefully. They may have interests to do with society and people as a whole, psychology, sociology, but are also likely fond of “pleasing” and harmony inducing arts.

Mercury in Scorpio- Infuses Mercury with a detective quality, diving deep into taboos, secrets and subjects that many would shy away from. They can have obsessive thoughts and can often intuitively know the intent of the people around them. Can be immensely passionate about their interests.

Mercury in Sagittarius- Has a mind like a flying carpet, soaring to great heights when it comes to asking questions of the universe. Science, philosophy, the social sciences could all be potential interests, and when they gain knowledge, they are unlikely to shy way from sharing it. Each thought can feel like a jewel.

Mercury in Capricorn- Makes Mercury methodical, practical and efficient, moving like cogs and wheels. When they set their sites on something, they effectively plan ahead to achieve their goals. They like to ground the often flighty Mercury, although an interest in the written word and language is not uncommon.

Mercury in Aquarius- Mercury is inventive, innovative and forward thinking in Aquarius, where old thought patterns and systems will likely be rejected. They can have bouts of chaotic and eccentric thinking, where even in the middle of the night they are up thinking about the weird and wonderful subjects of the world. Will receive lighting bolts of insight.

Mercury in Pisces- Thoughts aren’t structured and separate here, but can all blend into one like a vague wash of colour. They are more likely to doodle their dreams on their maths book than do sums, but are capable of the most wonderful abstract and imaginative thinking, often leading to a different sort of intelligence.

Down-to-Earth Love, Strong Emotions, and Technology

July 25

The sun and Mars are still conjunct in early Leo to an exact degree.  So the possibility of taking sudden action is a big possibility since the sun is focused on that.

Mercury in Leo is at 29 degrees, and soon after going into Virgo, it will go retrograde and come back to this point. This is also the area where the next new moon solar eclipse, will be landing, and it is also the point of the fixed star Regulus.  In this spot, it is connecting to the grand fire trine with NN, Uranus and Saturn. It is closest to being trine to Uranus, which brings unexpected news, insights, brilliant conversations or unusual statements (well that’s everyday, these days).  But it is HIGHLY positive and with Mercury in loving Leo –the sign that rules the heart—and Uranus in Aries—the sign that takes action, there could be unexpected action based on telling someone you love them, engagements, or news of a child or future child.  Positive news about teaching children through technology, in a futuristic way or about something unusual. It is important to the social destiny and also highly positive, and Saturn in the grand trine can help with the ground work—highly positive to make something real in a responsible, practical way that builds the structure so it can be strong.  In Sagittarius, there could be legal matters involved, or higher education and possibly international ties or something that involves foreigners or foreign travel.

Jupiter is square Pluto this week, almost exact today, and while Jupiter and Pluto together can relate to power and wealth, some astrologers believe that this configuration relates to using power and money for the good of others.  Jupiter is beneficence and good fortune and in Libra it is about relationships and justice. Pluto is power and economics and in Capricorn relates to being responsible.  This challenging angle can mean that extreme power, extreme changes (Pluto) can affect harmony in a big way (Jupiter in Libra) that can be stressful and that it is necessary to be responsible in business, government, authority in order to achieve justice, fairness, and positive partnerships.

Venus is opposite Saturn still moving away from that aspect.  Feet on the ground when it comes to love and money as well as beauty and décor—what we call ours. Not to get too carried away, especially because of peer pressure (among social groups, norms—represented by Gemini), or when seeing things in the media and wanting what you see. Saturn brings things down to reality and in Sagittarius  gives a wider perspective of what is really meaningful and considered to be a higher-level perspective.

Venus is sextile Eris and close to being sextile to Uranus. Angle of opportunity to take positive unexpected or sudden actions related to meetings or social groups/activities. Possibly a financial benefit connected to future technological activity or developments, or through futures investments. Moon in Virgo is opposed to Chiron.  Feelings and emotional issues regarding health and

Nutrition, getting in shape may be spurred on by pain or feeling unhealthy or a negative issue related to health, wounds or injury, or negative reminders of what health should be.  There could be sensitivities regarding health concerns and those could spur on the feelings about the need to work harder on health and nutrition.

July 26

Sun and Mars still exact.  Focus on taking action related to things we love, children, playfulness and fun, or even risks.  Matters of the heart and matters of enjoyment.  Beware of the tendency to be impulsive since there is a connection to Uranus in Aries, still, and that can result in unexpected blow-ups.

Early on, Neptune is  opposite the moon today, and there could be emotional hindrances to the details related to sensitive issues, health, or feeling at peace. Emotional responses to the small details regarding a creative project could come up, as well.  And perhaps an emotional issue happens related to the health of someone in the music or film industry, or the mental health of someone based on an emotional disturbance related to things being in order, or overwork, or taking care of health and fitness.  It may be a good day for a mental health day away from the ordinary schedule, since mental, physical health as well as the focus being distracted by either a need to just let the imagination run wild while you are doing a detailed or organizational task, or the opposite—maybe you are too focused on the small details when what you need to do is just let it go and see where things lead.  Being more creative in a spiritual way.

Later, there is a grand cross in the sky formed by the Moon in Virgo, Saturn in Sag, Chiron in Pisces and Venus in Gemini.  There will be challenges related to emotions concerning things like health and nutrition or how things are being organized, or the small details about how things are being done—either related to healthcare, or legal matters, or financial discussions in the news and the reality vs. what is being said. Emotional responses to the details about that will come up as well as stressful issues regarding health, healthcare, pain and injury and some kind of harmony or financial matter.

On a personal level, emotions could be strong regarding small details, the little things. Saturn in Sag could relate to delays in travel or legal matters, possibly limitations surrounding education or publishing matters.  Chiron in Pisces could bring up sensitive issues related to health, injury or pain, or feelings of compassion for someone in need of healing.

Venus in Gemini, again, is money or love, values in relation to social groups, meetings and what is in the news.  Gemini can mean there are two things,  or two sides, possibly a need to make a choice of more than one thing. Choosing values over money or love over beauty.  All of these could come up and be affecting the others. This can mean putting out a lot of fires, or feeling as if you need to multi-task, or you have the weight of the world on your shoulders.  Because the moon is in the mix, it will not last more than a day and Venus will also be moving away from this configuration soon, as well.  So the pressure will dissipate in a day or two.

Jupiter and Black moon Lilith are sextile today, meaning very good possibilities for expanding relationships with powerful international women or women in law or education.  It could also relate on a personal level to great benefits to a relationship or partnership and sexuality while traveling, or women feeling more powerful in relationships/partnerships—possibly a just legal decision goes well regarding women’s issues or because of a powerful woman having a big effect on the outcome.

Jupiter still squares Pluto.  This does indicate stress between what is just and fair and major transformations taking place in government, business, banking, and the workplace, or the boss, authority figure.

Pluto is close to being sextile to Neptune and has been on an ongoing basis.  Not exact but still within orb. This can relate to what I talked about last time – reverting to the spiritual and meditation, intuition, and creative issues.  It can be the opportunity for major transformation regarding how people use their spiritual, intuitive and creative gifts, including music, film, art, photography.  There are positive opportunities to make major transformations in these fields and to have a huge impact on the business end of it, the authority side.  Perhaps a new authority figure in the New Age or spiritual world will make a big difference or have a transformative effect.

July 27

Today Venus in Gemini and Uranus in Aries are at a positive angle of opportunity.  There could be surprises or unusual activity going on that could be influential over finances or love relationships, possibly what you own, or that can make you happy if you take advantage of this possibility.  It could be related to what is reported in the news that offers an opportunity to make money based on unexpected events, or coming into money suddenly or unexpectedly based on something you write or communicate, or on a meeting with someone. Or it could be a positive social connection that is made based on an unexpected turn of events or action. You know the kind of thing that happens in movies when you bump into someone coming out of the elevator, or sitting on the train, or with Uranus, online.

The Grand Cross is still in place  briefly in Mutable signs, meaning challenges that could transition us into something new. Specifically, Moon in Virgo opposed to Chiron relates to feelings and emotional issues regarding health and nutrition, getting in shape may be spurred on by pain or feeling unhealthy or a negative issue related to health, wounds or injury, or negative reminders of what health should be.  There could be sensitivities regarding health concerns and those could spur on the feelings about the need to work harder on health and nutrition.

Then the moon will be in Libra for a short time in the evening (EDT), and also be at a positive angle of opportunity to Mars and the Sun in Leo. This could be a big emotional reaction to a relationship issue or to an issue of what is fair and taking action to be more loving, or more happy, or just impulsively taking a risk of some kind—possibly related to a financial gamble– and it turns out well.   We still have the grand trine in fire, but there is a remainder of that grand cross which is now a T-square connecting venus in Gemini to Chiron in Pisces to Saturn in Sagittarius, all at challenging angles, along with the Venus opposition to Saturn. So there could be some tension related to harmony and values among social networks that is at odds with healing and healthcare, helping those in pain, and in making it real vs. putting up walls and restrictions against love, harmony and healing.  This is a struggle that needs to be overcome, and can be as Venus moves ahead and when Chiron moves into Aries.   At that point, there could be less focus on compassion and sensitivity to the pain and injuries and need for healing, and more action being taken to that end.

July 28

The main thing happening today is the moon meets up with Jupiter in Libra, and that brings up highly emotional or very strong feelings regarding partnerships, justice, what is fair, what works best to maintain harmony.  And that is at a challenging angle, almost exact, to Pluto in Capricorn.  It represents big business and the government, those in authority and who have the power. There is less focus on emotional issues and fairness and more on practicality and efficiency. Hard work, not working in partnership with others, not a good balance of perspective, and this is going to result in an emotional plea or a huge expression of feelings that challenge the authority to make things fair and just.   To work together and to take into consideration the strong feelings about the need for fairness and positive (world, high-level) partnerships.

The moon and Jupiter are also at a positive angle of opportunity to Black Moon Lilith, which is related to female power or raw sexuality. So a good possibility, if you do something about it, to have a great sexual day with your partner, that will be extremely beneficial on the emotional scale.  Very good for justice and fairness and feeling good about legal decisions thanks to potential powerful female intervention.

Venus is still at a positive angle of opportunity to Uranus, so there could be unexpected financial benefits in technology-related, future-oriented activities.  There could also be surprises action taken that could relate in an outcome for love and harmony. Possibly at an activity related to social justice, or at a tech show, or online.

July 29

The big player today is the moon at the last degrees of Libra, where it is aspecting Venus in Gemini.  This can mean some feelings or emotions coming up regarding a relationship or partnership is highly positive for communicating in loving ways.  Telling how you feel, in writing and maybe even taking an ad out in the paper or posting it online.  Possibly an emotional proposal that is spread on social media. Another possibility is that the emotional concerns for justice and fairness could receive funding from networking, social media, news reports or social groups that show their love with money to help achieve justice. This could be done in an effort of partnership among several groups.

The moon is also opposite Uranus in Aries. Unexpected activities or outbursts could create hindering emotional feelings regarding relationships and partnerships.  These could be at opposite ends of the spectrum. But Venus is sextile to Uranus, so the Venus/moon connection could mean that the social activities related to love and money will help iron out this opposition.

The moon is also at an angle of opportunity to the NN in Leo connecting it to the grand fire trine – another positive connection that brings it in touch with Uranus in a positive way.  So  whatever unexpected outburst or surprise action is opposing the feelings for partnership or justice, there are other aspects in the sky that are calming Uranus in Aries down and turning things into very positive outcomes—so if you’re feeling a sudden surge of emotion because of an unexpected event that seems problematic, rest assured that there are positive forces influencing that scenario and it will work out for the best.  And Saturn in that mix in the grand trine, keeps feet on the ground, and cooler, reasonable, and high-level (in Sag) perspectives.

random overthinking that may lead to creativity... Is describing an alien race as "humanoid" racist/speciesist? It's definitely culture-centric, but would Vulcans, for instance, be offended? On the one hand, we humans describe things in terms of our own experiences, so 'humanoid' is an accurate descriptor. On the other hand, Wouldn't Vulcans describe us as 'vulcanoid' or Klingons, 'klingonoid'? Why should one term be preferred over the other?

I supposed you could call them “upright bipedal carbon-based lifeforms” if you wanted.

Top 10 Comics of 2016 (Objective Facts)

Welcome to the top 10 comics of the year, these are comics released in print in single issues. There is several comics I wanted to read that I had not got the chance to read in single issues so they won’t be included on this list. These are 10 damn fine comics I read this year and I hope if you haven’t read them you give it a look.

Squirrel Girl:  A sadly declining star for me, last year Squirrel Girl was no doubt at the top of my lists but this year I feel a bit less engaged with it. This is actually pretty common around all of Marvel with Civil War 2, relaunches, universe changing event after universe changing event it makes it hard to feel attached. Still Squirrel Girl is full of laughs with some stand out stories that came out this year like dealing with Doctor Doom from the past after being sent further into the past. We also had the stand out choose your own adventure issue where subtly Koi Boi is revealed to be a trans man and that is super awesome!

Wic/Div: This comic is the serious, it is not tonely the same as the others but I adore it.  We have gods walking among us on earth, mystery, betrayal, queerness, action, great designs, and a great book. If you want a story that is crafted masterfully and can invoke a wide range of emotions then The Wicked + The Divine is for you.

Space Battle Lunchtime: When Oni Press announced their new lineup this was the title that stuck out to me the most. Turns out my gut feeling was right as this book transports the reader to this new world of aliens that is fascinating to watch unfold. One creator managed with help from editors and what not to do the art, colors and storytelling for this epic cooking show in space. This is one of the most fun energetic books I have ever read. The only problem with this series is it goes by so fast but with only one issue left getting them all together is a great idea. If you want to watch a funny space cooking show and a cute lady on lady romance then come here.

Backstagers: This wasn’t a title I was expecting to even buy. I mean all boy lumberjanes sounds cute but I generally, as you’ll find on this list, don’t read stories about dudes. However, this book is fantastic, fun, queer, and all the great things that Lumberjanes is. I think Backstagers does an amazing job of dispelling the toxic masculinity present in much of male lead media. The creative world backstage is fantastic, it has such a great visual style and everyone who works on this project has everything in them in it.

Jem and the Holograms: The truly outrageous gift that just keeps giving. I love the story, Sophie is like my favorite artist and even with her leaving we have had some solid people taking over and there’s a lot of fun to be had with this series. I do worry about future placement but I am very excited for Misfits and this year is all about this year. With stand out scenes like Blaze coming out, the misfits and holograms working together, the cuties of a 3rd rival band, and more all in play this year I am at the front hoping they will let me on stage.

Princeless: Princeless is a modern classic, a series that every volume is great for all ages. This year I read a lot of Princeless, my little sister adored reading volume 1 for the first time.  More then that I adored reading all the volumes and the short stories of Princeless. This is one that works for the whole family and manages to really go over a ton of great stuff. We have our hero learning new perspectives, saving people, exploring the world, she is a fantastic protagonist.

Kim and Kim: Kim and Kim the queer bffs that do that bounty hunting thing. They have amazing chemistry and are the kinds of loser badasses I love. They screw up a lot, they can be kind of an asshole but their hearts are in the right place. We follow them in one journey this year and it’s a fun journey to follow. Also like it has a trans writer and latnix gals on the art team so that is pretty badass too. This stories only problem is an ending that feels a bit rushed.

Jonesy: This was the biggest surprise for me comics wise in 2016. I saw it and was automatically charmed by the art. I decided it was worth risking wasting 4 bucks on. So i did and haven’t looked back since. The funny world, the endearing characters, the general feeling that this comic is different without trying hard to be. Jonesy is queer,  she’s latnix, she’s funny, she’s a bit of a loser but in a way that makes you feel okay to be a loser too. Jonesy is a story that makes me happy whenever I read it, it’s always at the top of my stack, it’s a book that I can count on. The fact it isn’t number 1 but might be in my top 10 series of all time just says how great comics have been this year.

Raven the Pirate Princess: Raven the Pirate Princess is that book that no one really talks about but should be a staple of everyone’s pull. It’s so fun, funny, illustrated so well and it feels like a massive breath of fresh air. Amazing comedy, a bunch of queer ladies, women of all sizes, skin colors, and we even have some varying ability. It’s great to see so much diversity threaded into this epic scaling tale of a women trying to get what was stolen from her by her brothers.

Angela Queen of Hel: Angela Queen of Hel is one of my favorite stories of all time. It joins the hallowed ranks of other classics in my mind and despite a few issues moves far past them. The series being canned on issue 7 means so much potential was thrown away and we lost. This story is the most compelling romance I have ever read and it’s such a badass story too. Conquering hell to get your lesbian love back is super cool and then the follow up story is an awesome cap to show their relationship past the climax. No matter what Marvel does to the pair we will always have this story to look back on and cheer for.

It seems some of our imaginative peers suppress their artistic instincts out of fear of being judged, alienated, or just plain not good enough. In other cases, a parent, teacher, or friend has been dismissive about creative ambitions. Don’t let that suffocate your vision. More often than not, people won’t share your vision or hunger, but that’s all right. Ambitions are individual. Art is subjective. Creativity often leads to the solo pursuit of a dream until you find like-minded people who get it. Who get you. - Connor Franta.
