Episode Three: “The River Styx” (January 1964 – December 1965)

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

Episode Six: “Things Fall Apart” (January – July 1968)

The basic assumptions on which the North Vietnamese launched [the Tết Offensive] had all proved to be wrong. Hanoi’s leaders had assumed the ARVN would crumble, that South Vietnamese soldiers would come over to their side. Instead, not a single unit defected. The civilian populace Hanoi expected to rise up may have been unhappy with their government, but they had little sympathy for communism. And when the fighting began, they had hidden in their homes to escape the fury in the streets.

Episode Nine: “A Disrespectful Loyalty” (May 1970 – March 1973)

In late March, as the surviving ARVN forces straggled across the border [with Laos] into South Vietnam, crowds of weeping women, children, and old men – dressed in white, the color of mourning – begged for news of the soldiers who were missing. In Vietnam, the dead must receive proper burial so that their restless souls can have peace; and their families needed to know the time of their deaths so that they can honor them each year.

Episode Five: “This Is What We Do” (July – December 1967)

Lê Duẩn neutralized those who opposed his plan. Members of General Giáp’s staff were arrested; so was Hồ Chí Minh’s secreatry. Hundreds of less prominent figures – journalists, students, even highly decorated heroes of the French war – were rounded up… The date eventually chosen for the attack would be January 31, 1968 – the first day of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration, known as Tết.
