Sheila Abdus-Salaam, the first black female judge in the New York State Court of Appeals and the first female Muslim judge in the United States, was found dead on April 12, 2017. Sheila Abdus-Salaam was born Sheila Turner to working-class parents in Washington DC on March 14, 1952. Her inspiration to become a lawyer came from the TV shows she loved as a girl and from Frankie Muse Freeman, a civil rights activist and lawyer, who visited her school. Among her many accomplishments, Sheila Abdus-Salaam made the groundbreaking decision in a case that allowed LGBT parents to pursue equal parenting rights.

Lacking a final statement from a medical examiner or a suicide note, the police and the media have still been quick to label her death a suicide, citing that she was ‘stressed at work.’
We can only wait for further investigation and hope that she receives as much justice in death as she offered to the world in life. For the time being, until we know the results of the investigation, SAY HER NAME.

Sheila Abdus-Salaam.

‪In honor of my friends graduating from THE North Carolina Central University School of Law tomorrow, I had to give them a special shoutout. They took me in when I moved to North Carolina and did not know anyone. Even though these last two years have flown by, I thank God for them everyday. They have been there for every high and every low. Even though they’ll probably never see this, I just want y'all to see Black Excellence in the making and how proud I am of them.

To the Crew, congratulations on your accomplishments. I wish you only the best. I cannot wait to see what God has in store for you. Love you babies 😘😘🙌🏾

You know what the world needs? Lawyers who understand immigration and institutional barriers. Lawyers who understand feminism. Lawyers who have a background in business and marketing and can revamp the legal business model.

In short, go to be Elle Woods. Study what you love, and make yourself a better lawyer than all those political science majors who never thought there was an option outside the box.

so studyblrs are cute and all and I follow a bunch of them, but have you ever actually like, read the text on a lot of those bullet journals??? my notes would be gorgeous too if the main thing on my to-do list for each day was shit like “track that package” and “buy a clock” but the amount of fuckall that ramrods my day can really only be centralized by google calendar integrating every piece of tech I own or have an account on AND a steady stream of amphetamines so forgive me if I’m not really all about the a e s t h e t i c of productivity but I got shit that needs done and in 6 months this gets waaaaaaay worse and there’s no curlicue on a dot-grid moleskine that’s gonna fix that
