Here are The ComiXologist podcast co-host Lou’s five recommendations from our Best of 2016 Indie Comics sale!

Derf Backderf’s PUNK ROCK & TRAILER PARKS

PUNK ROCK & TRAILER PARKS, Derf Backderf’s first full graphic novel, is an evocative, hilarious, and ultimately poignant book that is set in and around recession-ravaged Akron, Ohio, in 1979, at the peak of the Rubber City’s unlikely and lively punk rock scene, a pop culture phenomenon that spawned distinctive acts such as Devo, Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, the Waitresses and so many other groups that Melody Maker referred to Akron as “the new Liverpool.” The fictional PUNK ROCK & TRAILER PARKS follows the triumphs and travails of one colorful young man, Otto, who lives in the family-owned trailer park in a small town on the outskirts of the Rubber Capital. He backs into the punk counter-culture by chance and through talent, wit and sheer force of personality soon becomes a local star. The story follows Otto during a remarkable year as he chases fame and love and has memorable encounters with punk luminaries such as the Clash’s Joe Strummer, Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics and rock scribe Lester Bangs.

HENRY & GLENN FOREVER & EVER

Two men.
Two myths.
One legend.
The greatest love story every told has finally been released in graphic novel form. This epic tome features twenty short stories about the domestic life of “Henry” and “Glenn” and sometimes their neighbors “Daryl” and “John.” Among other hijinks, Henry and Glenn go to therapy together, battle an evil cult in the forest, and profess their love for each other, all while dealing with jealousy and other normal relationship problems and trying to figure out if their soft-rocking neighbors are actually Dungeons and Dragons playing Satanists. The saga of Henry and Glenn is a true testament to the power of love to overcome even the biggest, manliest egos of our time. The book collects four serialized comics, adds 100 never-before published pages, including new stories, pin up art, and full color covers from the original series.

FIRST LAW OF MAD SCIENCE VOL. 1: WORK UNTIL YOUR FAMILY IS SAD

Super-scientist George Baker’s newest invention, electronic retinal implants known as “Cyber-Eyes,” are nothing short of amazing. So amazing, in fact, and so cheap and easy to get, that some 40% of the population has gotten them within their first year on the market.

But they aren’t perfect. Far from it.

When things start going inexplicably and bizarrely wrong with the original test subjects, George and his family will have to find out why, before the problem spreads and causes worldwide panic. Along the way, they’ll uncover ancient civilizations, corporate conspiracies, sinister cults, other-dimensional creatures, awesome robots, subterranean cities, and secrets humans were not meant to know. It’s going to be a wild ride.

Collecting issues 1 through 5 of First Law of Mad Science and the one-shot First Law of Mad Science: Three Card Games.
