Auntie Kylie is apparently unaware that there are other humans roaming this Earth with the name ‘Kylie’. She unsuccessfully tried to trademark her name for the purpose of selling high priced lip glosses and eye shadow palettes. The same lip glosses and eye shadow pallets that singer Kylie Minogue says are damaging her brand.
Must be nice. I wish I could sue every family member that’s currently damaging my brand, especially Kylie.
Law Castle (aka Tower of Kilbride) was built in 1468 for Princess Mary, daughter of James II, when she married Thomas, Master of Boyd, and later Earl of Arran. Thomas’s father, Lord Robert Boyd, was Regent of Scotland for James III. Robert Boyd arranged the marriage of James III to the daughter of the King of Norway, who brought as her dowry, the Orkneys and Shetlands, thus becoming part of Scotland. Today the castle is available for rent as a luxurious and exclusive holiday home. It’s located in the village of West Kilbride in North Ayrshire.
Funny story, lol I 1st learned about the Gullah people after watching Gullah Gullah Island as a child (please tell me you remember otherwise i feel old). I didn’t fully understand the culture and motive behind the show until last fall in my African Retentions in American course in college.
So here goes:
The Gullah people are the descendants of the slaves who worked on the rice plantations in South Carolina and Georgia. They still live in rural communities in the coastal region and on the Sea islands of those two states, and they still retain many elements of African language and cultureMany traditions of the Gullah and Geechee culture were passed from one generation to the next through language, agriculture, and spirituality. The culture has been linked to specific West African ethnic groups who were enslaved on island plantations to grow rice, indigo, and cotton starting in 1750, when antislavery laws ended in the Georgia colony.
A Board of Trustees established Georgia in 1732 with the primary purposes of settling impoverished British citizens and creating a mercantile system that would supply England with needed agricultural products. The colony enacted a 1735 antislavery law, but the prohibition was lifted in 1750. West Africans, the argument went, were far more able to cope with the climatic conditions found in the South. And, as the growing wealth of South Carolina’s rice economy demonstrated, slaves were far more profitable than any other form of labor available to the colonists.
Rice plantations fostered Georgia’s successful economic competition with other slave-based rice economies along the eastern seaboard. Coastal plantations invested primarily in rice, and plantation owners sought out Africans from the Windward Coast of West Africa (Senegambia [later Senegal and the Gambia], Sierra Leone, and Liberia), where rice, indigo, and cotton were indigenous to the region. Over the ensuing centuries, the isolation of the rice-growing ethnic groups, who re-created their native cultures and traditions on the coastal Sea Islands, led to the formation of an identity recognized as Geechee/Gullah. There is no single West African contribution to Geechee/Gullah culture, although dominant cultural patterns often correspond to various agricultural investments. For example, Africa’s Windward Coast was later commonly referred to as the Rice Coast in recognition of the large numbers of Africans enslaved from that area who worked on rice plantations in America.
Documentation of the developing culture on the Georgia islands dates to the nineteenth century. By the late twentieth century, researchers and scholars had confirmed a distinctive group and identified specific commonalities with locations in West Africa. The rice growers’ cultural retention has been studied through language, cultural habits, and spirituality. The research of Mary A. Twining and Keith E. Baird in Sea Island Roots: African Presence in the Carolinas and Georgia (1991) investigates the common links of islanders to specific West African ethnicities.
Enslaved rice growers from West Africa brought with them knowledge of how to make tools needed for rice harvesting, including fanner baskets for winnowing rice. The sweetgrass baskets found on thecoastal islands were made in the same styles as baskets found in the rice culture of West Africa. Sweetgrass baskets also were used for carrying laundry and storing food or firewood. Few present-day members of the Geechee/Gullah culture remember how to select palmetto, sweetgrass, and pine straw to create baskets, and the remaining weavers now make baskets as decorative art, primarily for tourists.
Aspects of West African heritage have survived at each stage of the circle of migration, with rice, language, and spirituality persisting as cultural threads into the twentieth century. The Geechee/Gullah culture on the Sea Islandsof Georgia has retained a heritage that spans two continents. Sapelo Island Cultural DayAt the end of the Civil War, lands on the coastal islands were sold to the newly freed Africans during the Port Royal Experiment, part of the U.S. government's Reconstruction plan for the recovery of the South after the war.
During the 1900s, land on some of the islands—Cumberland, Jekyll,Ossabaw, Sapelo, and St. Simons —became resort locations and reserves for natural resources. The modern-day conflict over resort development on the islands presents yet another survival test for the Geechee/Gullah culture, the most intact West African culture in the United States. Efforts to educate the public by surviving members of the Geechee/Gullah community, including Cornelia Bailey of Sapelo Island and the Georgia Sea Island Singers, help to maintain and protect the culture’s unique heritage in the face of such challenges.
The Gullah/Geechee have arguable preserved the heritage of their African ancestors better than any group in the United States.

I like how Melissa is the one to always notice when Zack falls in and out of love interests: in The Wilder West she was constantly making comments as Zack was trying to play it up to Jackie. Some of which were’t kind; the word “dummy” was thrown around. In The Math Book Melissa somehow sees the small writing of another girl’s love declaration to Zack on bench while being TURNED THE OTHER WAY. She then makes a dig at Zack about the writing. Melissa’s great.

I’ve been meaning to do a compilation of Tian Xiaopeng’s weibo posts for some time, and here it is. He’s the director of Monkey King: Hero is Back (2015) and this is his weibo. He updates sporadically, but apparently did a Q&A session with fans back in summer of 2015. I put together and translated some of the best responses below (the rest can be found on his blog).
Q: What’s up with the White Dragon, at the end [he] went to battle Hun Dun with the Great Sage? The White Dragon was tamed by the Great Sage?
A: They [Wukong/White Dragon] had a 2-hour discussion, but it was edited out.
Q: Director, how come Wukong, Tang monk, Zhu Bajie, and even Xiao Bailong, showed up in the movie, but Friar Sand (Wujing) didn’t?
A: [He was] holding the camera.
Q: In the sequel, can you not change Friar Sand into a girl, I can’t accept changes that are too absurd
A: [If] everyone becomes a girl, [only] Friar Sand will not, I promise
Q: The Great Sage is just 1 pilgrim, but he ends up with a son and daughter, and does a good job taking care of the silly girl, where’d he get the experience?
A: In the past, he took care of monkeys in Flower Fruit Mountain
Q: Now that so many girls want to have the Great Sage’s babies, how do you feel? hahaha
A: I hate that my face isn’t longer (Note: Director thinks Wukong’s defining design trait is his long horse-face and didn’t think it’d be considered attractive- now he must face the irony LMAO)
Q: I think about how other people’s boyfriends spend money taking their girlfriends to the movies… but I have to spend my own money at the movies in order to see my boyfriend, have you thought about the hearts of us fangirls?
A: I have to spend my own money to see my own movie in theaters, I’m worse off than you.
(Note: I thought the asker was complaining about her love life to the director, before I realized her “boyfriend” is actually Wukong LOL)
Q: Look at me look at me! Not counting Hun Dun and the pig, how did everyone else know about the Great Sage causing havoc in heaven! They even made a shadow puppet show! Who in the three realms let this event get to the mortal realm?
U know who in the west wing universe would be a r good president?
That’s never really talked about regarding presidents?
Josh wants to be the guy the guy counts on–Well hello DC power couple. Donna, who absorbs info like a sponge, is just so damn competent and brilliant and smart and can grasp difficult concepts v easily and translate them into things that the average American can understand without losing the nuance of policy, like the cats and the Supreme Court.
And CJ said it herself :“Josh isn’t ever going to find an assistant better than you” CJ has worked in a myriad professional industries and made over 500k a year and is the goddamn US Press Secretary and for the fact that the deputy chief of staff will never find a better assistant than donna
Like……this isn’t some podunk law firm in the middle of nowhere this is the white house. A West Wing job. To say no one would be better means out of tens of thousands of people who would kill for that job would not be better than donna
(honestly there’s even an episode addressing it being Josh Lyman’s assistant is better than getting a Master’s and Donna’s starting salary at that website was what she assumed the total budget would be. That’s how valuable pre-Santos era Donna is considered to be). She hears and she absorbs and she retains and she’s able to apply that information–remember when she knew the exact filibuster rule, with the Stackhouse ep?
And Donna can publicly speak–we’ve established with Leo (and plenty of other people) that some people just forget almost everything in front of a camera or a crowd, or in a debate type of setting, or just look bulldogish and antagonistic(can you say the plot of the pilot?). It just isn’t for everyone. But this is what Donna did, for two campaigns and even as Josh’s assistant. Remember when he sent her to North Dakota to deal with people who wanted to eliminate ‘north’ in ‘north dakota?’
Once she quits she gets almost as good as Josh in like a year and sure, there’s few complications, yeah. But hey Bartlet had his riding into a tree affair. Donna has her yelling at a chicken debacle.
And also the trip abroad. Like she doesn’t like to politicize it.
But people who are like “oh she hasn’t served in combat” well she was injured in a war zone. Annabeth mentions how the people fell in love with her, wanted to make her story into a movie. There’s name recognition early on right there, something that would make it a lot easier to campaign on as a Senator or a Representative than the average person, get her foot in the door.
And listen people would be much more afraid of pissing off donna than Josh because Josh is always pissed but donnais the one person who can sometimes reel him in. No one is there to reel in donna. She’s charismatic, much more than josh, and people like her. Maybe after shes served a term as the first ladys chief of staff, helen more at ease with being first lady and more of an idea of what she’s doing, she’d run. She’d totally get elected as a Representative with her resume, then maybe serve two or 3 terms, then after possibly run for governor. And then start her election campaign. CHARLIE AS VP LBR CHARLIE IS TOTALLY GONNA GO BACK INTO POLITICS, HE’S TOO GOOD AT IT AND HAS SO MANY CONNECTIONS AND HIS WORK AT THE TAIL END OF THE BARTLET PRESIDENCY HAD HIM HOOKED HE TOTALLY WOULD BE DONNA’S VP.
It’s very telling that white supremacists are afraid of “brown hordes” invading and taking over where they live, claiming that they will not respect the local culture and actively try to suppress it while oppressing the locals…because that’s exactly what white Americans and Europeans did to the places they conquered.
Americans moving into Texas were absolutely offended that the majority there was Catholic, they thought Spanish was an inferior language, and they seceded because they wanted to own slaves and it was forbidden under Mexican law.
Americans moving west into indigenous territories literally relocated entire families rather than live alongside people they viewed as dirty savages. They punished them for speaking their own language, for engaging in their own cultural practices, and stole their children in an attempt to kill their connections as a community.
Americans moving into Hawai’i faked goodwill in order to corner a lucrative market, and then staged a coup to overthrow the queen and claim the islands as their own solely to protect their own interests. Teaching of the native language and customs was suppressed.
Europeans moving into Africa and the Middle East took extra care to stoke ethnic and religious tension among the locals to keep them from uniting against them. Europeans imported the Christian blood libel to Syria and Egypt to fuel antisemitic violence against the Jews living there; the local people were literally segregated into second class social tiers, good enough to serve whites drinks but not good enough to be allowed into the social clubs built in their own cities and towns; if their art and everyday objects weren’t destroyed in an attempt to “civlise” them, or to demonise them as savages, then it was stolen as curiosities for European amusement.
White supremacists idolise the hell out of Japan yet forget that the shogunate was rightfully suspicious of the intentions of the Europeans who came claiming to want to trade–and expelled all the foreign missionaries, leaving only a few representatives of the Dutch West Indies company allowed to commerce there.
TLDR; white supremacists are afraid of people coming to live in Europe and the states because they are projecting hard.
