i wish you would share your opinion. it can make other people who might think similarly feel less alone? it's a brutal, unforgiving industry. and i have fears, too. along those lines? -curious anon
I got this ask the other night and thought, “Yes! I’ll share my opinion!” and now it’s several days later and I still haven’t replied. This would be one reason I usually don’t post anything but gifs, because I’m rather shit at answering anything in a timely manner, if I manage to do so at all.
My thoughts on the Just Like You lyric video…ended up getting way too long with too many images, so I’m working on a separate post which may live in my drafts folder forever, I don’t know yet. But, long story short: puzzles and patterns all over the place. A lot of 8s spotted, for example.
I like to use my kids as an impartial audience for stuff like this, ha, so I can get impressions from people who don’t have a bias. Aside from one who wouldn’t watch it more than once—”Mom, you’re asking for SIX MINUTES of my time! And the words are too fast!”—here’s their takeaway, accurate or not:
• the word “confused” in a window. This was the only word my speedreader remembered from those flashing by.
• a lot of stories in the background. Some were repeated. Some had to do with music. Some things were marked out.
• there were a lot of images from the Back to You video.
• he was playing a lot of pool.
Louis said the song is for his fans. The video is for us, too—random
articles would have served the aesthetic of the video just as well, so
the choices feel
really deliberate to me. (Or maybe he just said, “Use the entertainment
pages, some sports,
some politics.” That seems too random, now that I’m typing it,
but only he knows.) Some of the broader themes in the news clippings:
entertainment, betting/gambling, corruption, abuse, war, sports,
But no casual viewer would be analyzing the article content in the background, as the images flip by so fast.
One single frame of a crossword puzzle flashing by? That’s for us, wanting to puzzle it out. (My darkLarrie heart likes looking at the juxtaposition of these lyrics, the manner in
which they appear, imagery like the blue door and the left arm… Were all the Larry hints actual Larry hints? What are the correct interpretations? Only Louis knows for sure.)
I think Louis fully expected we’d be parsing the video frame
by frame, researching every little thing. I think he likely wanted us to do that. And yeah, I do believe he had a hand in all of it. Why not? He’s an experienced artist who works with words and symbols. He
knows what this section of his fans are like. HE KNOWS.
Finally (and back to your ask, curious anon, if you’re still reading this)—it’s a brutal unforgiving industry, no doubt about it. Life is often brutal regardless of circumstance, anyway.
Any unethical or immoral or corrupt or coercive or criminal activity can be perpetrated under the guise of a route to success. Silence is always understood as complicity. “Trustworthy” is just a
word. Depersonalization and commodification are facts of life. Use and abuse of power is all too real. You gotta be ruthless. Casualties or collateral damage are as nothing when there are financial rewards.
*I’ve written this, and apparently I don’t feel comfortable speculating in particulars about anything One Direction may or may not have experienced…but if you’d like to message me off anon, I’ll do my best to be prompt in having a conversation about it.
