larus occidentalis

April 8, 2014 - Western Gull (Larus occidentalis)

Requested by: serotina

This gull is found on the West Coast of North America, in a more restricted range than that of most gulls. It is a marine gull, nesting on islands, including San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island. It is typically very aggressive at defending nesting territories and has been considered a nuisance because of this. Its varied diet includes fish, mollusks, seal and sea lion carcasses, and trash.

At Chicago, IL.

A rhea and a wild seagull at the San Francisco Zoo in San Francisco, California.

The two of them walked up to a puddle at the same time to get a drink and then they just kind of stared at each other for a second and then went about their business.
