1993. In the Shadows

is the third album by Mercyful Fate. It is also the first offering of the band since their reunion in 1992. It was released on Metal Blade Records. This album shows the band leaving behind most of the Satanic and Occult-based lyrical themes which were prevalent on previous albums, in favor of a more story-based approach.

Some editions of In the Shadows contain a bonus track, “Return of the Vampire… 1993”, that is a re-recording of the song “Return of the Vampire”, present in the homonymous 1992 compilation album, featuring Lars Ulrich of Metallica on drums.

The album cover was painted by Torbjorn Jorgensen / Studio Dzyan.

For the album’s supporting tour, Morten Nielsen was replaced by King Diamond drummer Snowy Shaw, due to a knee injury Nielsen had sustained. Bassist Timi Hansen was also replaced by Sharlee D'Angelo, as Hansen did not want to take part in touring.
