language and framing

When progressives co-opt right-wing talking points about how Democrats are “latte-sipping” “smug elites,” who “live in bubbles,” they’re doing Republicans’ rhetorical dirty work for them. What’s more, these characterizations are wholly inaccurate — Trump voters have a HIGHER median income than Clinton supporters, and blue urban centers more closely resemble America than red rural areas. As George Lakoff, a linguistics professor at UC Berkeley, underlines about the importance of establishing your own narrative:

‘When arguing against the other side, don’t use their language because it evokes their frame and not the frame you seek to establish. Never repeat their charges! Instead, use your own words and values to reframe the conversation.’

Weird personal hang-up: seeing the words “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” used for Critical Role always makes me head-tilt a little, especially when it’s in-universe. They’re just such modern terms, which I know is technically true of the concept of dating in general, and so much of the pre-dating romance language is wrapped up in the ideas of courtship and active male-pursued female gender politics, but…

Is there any reason we don’t just call Perc’ahlia, Kimallura, etc. “lovers” at this point? His lover, her lover, their beloved, it seems a better fit.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed this, but Centipeetle has beautiful hand gestures and has great posture. We’re talking about someone used to presenting in high society. And it shows captains were conferred great glory; that the military was conferred great glory. Because even if the mind doesn’t remember, muscle memory will.

it took me a few days to do this (I’m not very good at drawing the skelebros yet… and this is only the second time I’m attempting the underfell bros) - but i had a lot of fun doing it… er, maybe too much.

go give JT Machinima’s full song a watch & like/subscribe! i’ve been kind of addicted to this ever since I stumbled across it, haha. i actually ended up feeling like it really fit the underfell skelebros better than the classic skelebros, and i wanted to try making one of these! learned a whole lot about expressions and body language and framing and orz//// there’s a few things i’d wanna fix tbh (crossed the left/right lines a few times w/o setup) but hey ʅ(〃∀〃)ゞ i’m away from home for a week+ so i didn’t want to let it fall by the wayside.

tl;dr! hope you like it & go check out the original song & artist, JT Machinima!

Linguistic Determinism - Linguistics Topic 22

Does our language determine how we can think, or can we think about things our language can’t frame? In this week’s episode, we talk about linguistic determinism: who came up with the hypothesis, what its implications are, and whether a stronger or weaker version best matches the facts.

Referring to Palestinians as a “demographic threat” is racist. Referring to Jews in NYC as a demographic threat is anti-Jewish. It’s simple. The latter would be commonly understood as bigoted, the former appears in newspapers across America as legitimate journalism. When Palestinians object to this language and framing, we are scolded as bullies. No, we are simply rejecting fascist and racist rhetoric. The overarching theme in mainstream media coverage on Palestine has always been clear: Die quietly, you are of no value to us.
