Okay, so we’ve all heard of her already, but plenty of people (including Mod Coffee until a recent conversation) believed that Lady Gaga was on the list of overpraised allies. Nope, she is bisexual, and has been out for over eight years!
Poker Face (2009) - According to Gaga herself, the song is about “why, when I was with my boyfriend, was I fantasizing about women?” (From this interview, around 4:50)
Born This Way (2011) is of course her iconic queer anthem.
Americano (2011) literally begins with “I met a girl… we fell in love, but not in court.” The line “we can marry on the west coast” is clearly alluding to marriage equality.
Everyone is surprised when they learn that I unironically enjoyed Lady Gaga in her teens, because her aesthetic is a far cry from mine. But I am proud of Mother Monster, Bisexual Icon, and I still dance to her songs when they come up on shuffle.
Thought i’d share this since i’m seeing a lot of shit being said, especially in this time of sorrow…
Regardless of your personal feelings towards her, Gaga has always been a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. “Calling her out” for speaking at the Orlando vigil doesn’t show how “woke” you are. She uses her platform and her strong voice to spread awareness and support, and that is commendable. The same cannot be said about most of her contemporaries.
