Mala Powers, Gina Lollobrigida in Trapeze (1956), Mamie van Doren.

American actress Mala Powers (1931-2007 ) played the lovely Roxanne opposite José Ferrer in Cyrano de Bergerac (1950) and starred in other Hollywood films of the 1950s. She was a leading authority on the acting techniques of Russian-American theatre practitioner Michael Chekhov.

Italian actress and photojournalist Gina Lollobrigida (1927) was one of the first European sex symbols of the post war years. ‘La Lollo’ paved the way into Hollywood for her younger colleagues Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale.

American actress Mamie Van Doren (1931) was a sex symbol of the 1950s and 1960s. Van Doren starred in several exploitation films such as Untamed Youth (1957), loaded with rock ‘n’ roll and juvenile delinquency. Her onscreen wardrobe usually consisted of tight sweaters, low-cut blouses, form-fitting dresses, and daring swimsuits. Mamie and her colleague blonde bombshells Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield were known as 'The Three M’s.’

Lollobrigida, Gina (B. 1927)

“Italy’s Marilyn Monroe,” as she had been billed, was in New York in 1954 when Marilyn was in town shooting on location for The Seven Year Itch (1955). The two met at the Trans Lux Theater on Lexington Avenue and Fifty-second Street hours before the filming of the infamous billowing skirt scene. They also met at a party thrown in honor of “La Lollo” by press agent Rupert Allan.

Lollobrigida’s film career spanned many international productions. Among her best-known English-language works are Bread, Love and Dreams (1953) and Beat the Devil (1954). In the eighties she was a regular on TV soap Falcon Crest.
