Okay it’s not actually an ode but I like alliteration. *shrugs* :)
Last week I did an Olicity re-watch from season 1 and 2 on Olicity Queen’s channel and live tweeted it. (Shameless plug: my Twitter is @thenerddess if you want to check it out)
I actually started writing this post immediately after I finished but wanted to wait for just before 3x20 to post it. Here are some of my thoughts/observations/feelings. Watch your shoes, I’m about to get emosh. :)
I haven’t watched any older Olicity scenes since last year’s summer hiatus. It was fun to go back and relive the journey Oliver and Felicity and Team Arrow have taken. It also reinforced that anyone who says Olicity came out of nowhere, is full of epic amounts of shit. It’s all there. If you pay even the smallest amount of attention.
What struck me most was how subtle it actually was. Though some of my tweets contradict this statement as I shout in all caps how not subtle their moments are. hahaha! In actuality they are, for the most part. Small, seemingly insignificant moments peppered between large action packed life changing ones.
I think this is where Oliver and Felicity’s relationship has thrived and where Oliver and Laurel’s relationship failed. I don’t want to make this post about bashing L/O but the contrast struck me as I was watching.
I was told Oliver and Laurel were this epic love story. I was told Oliver was in love with Laurel. I was told she knows him better than anyone. I was told that she was his soul mate. Problem is, I was never shown why or how this was true. Everyone of Oliver’s actions showed me otherwise. This was the foundation for the show’s main couple and sure it might have made good dramatic television for some, but it left me cold.
Then we have Oliver and Felicity.
When you think “Olicity moments” the first thing that probably comes to mind is the big ones. It does for me anyway. It’s the moment they met and the tarzan swings and the killing of The Count or the “fake” ‘I love you.’. Those are all great moments. Epic and amazing moments. I love them.
But what struck me as the was re-watching were the smaller moments. The moments in-between that really showed the evolution of Oliver and Felicity’s relationship. It was the shoulder squeezes, and the comforting touches. It was Felicity casually running her hand over Oliver’s forearm as she exits the Foundry. It was the moments of venerability that Oliver had with Felicity and visa versa. It was Felicity not buy is playboy bs from the beginning. It was a single look that says “I trust you.” “I’m here.” “I’m with you.”
For me, it is the small moments that really matter. There is nothing “epic” about these if you take them as individual moments. But accumulated, you start to see just how deep, evolved, genuine and pure their relationship really is. To see it go from random interactions mixed with bad lies, to Felicity becoming part of Team Arrow, to Oliver seeing her as a partner, to them slowly but surely falling in love. This is the stuff ultimate OTPs are made of.
Which brings us to tonight’s episode. 3x20.
The one we have all been waiting for. It’s all been building to this episode, this moment.Three years in the making. Season 3 has been a roller coaster for Oliver and Felicity’s relationship more than any other. We’ve had more downs then ups. And now we are getting what we’ve wanted for so long.
I’ve never seen hype like this. Ever! From fandom, to the director, to the EPs, to the media. Even Stephen saying his fav upcoming scene is an Olicity one from 3x20. Oh Captain! It is insane how excited everyone involved is and that makes me really happy and really proud of this show and this ship.
God speed Oliciters! This is an ending and a beginning all in one. This is the start of a whole new chapter of Arrow and for Olicity and I am all in. Let’s do this!
