A drabble for Kyle.
“Stop squirming, I can’t see you”
“Well, it’s not my fault your internet is slow and you’re seeing me in grainy webcam videos.” Kyle retorted back.
“Be grateful I even have time for this video chat. I have work to do. Night shift’s a pain. Patient’s crashing, emergency surgeries and ugh.. I’m getting a brain hemorrhage here” putting her hands in her messy hair, covering up her tanned face. Elisha dropped her head onto the table. Shaking his vision of her.
“Hey, look up. I already have limited time. Look at me. Let me see your pretty face.” Kyle’s voice softened coming closer to the screen as though he could smell her scent. He doesn’t even know what she smells like. She could smell like garbage for all he cares and he’ll still love it.
“I look horrible” defeat, heavy in her tone. Nevertheless, she looked straight at her webcam. Attempting a lopsided grin at the dimly lit device.
“You look beautiful”, he almost whispered. As though saying it to himself.
”..and you’re biased. I have to go now”, she hid her blush by busying herself with the loose scrubs that she wore.
“Okay….”, he said absentmindedly. He was still staring at her every move. Drinking it all up. Because he won’t be able to get another video chat with her until- indefinitely.
She stopped moving and shifted really close to her laptop. The LED lights illuminating her face from below. Casting a soft warm glow to her imperfect features.
“I miss you, Kyle” and with that she swiftly switched off her camera without waiting for a reply. The door slammed shut in haste and her laptop was in the process of shutting down.
Kyle stared at his blank laptop screen. Elisha’s face already imprinted at the back of his eyelids. He continued to stare like she was still there. As though her image lingered. She likes to do that. Ending a certain conversation briefly - without a goodbye. ‘Goodbyes are stupid’, she had once said. And Kyle agrees with her.
“I miss you too, Eli”
