I was jokingly saying to someone earlier that it would be the beginning of World War 3 if the United States intervenes in Syria, but it truly is possible when I thought about it… Israel is already attacking pro-Assad militia, not only in Syria but in Lebanon as well, alongside Qatar and Saudi Arabia who are continuously arming the rebels and even Turkey is providing some support for them, although for different political reasons. Russia, Iran and Hezbollah have taken the side of the government. There is also the unstable Iraq next-door that is already getting sucked into the whole thing. Any military intervention by the U.S. and the U.K., and possibly France, will create a disaster that will last for decades! It’s true that Assad is a horrible dictator, but at the same time there is no political alternative for him, if he is toppled Al-Qaida will take over Syria and that is the last thing anyone wants… It’s a really complex situation and the best thing is to keep it on a civil-war-level, even though it’s such a horrible horrible level.. I just feel so sorry for all the refugees and those who have been killed… innocent people are always the ones who suffer the most…

Yes, you are absolutely right. The writer wrote the phrase ‘for the very first time in history’ with a tongue in cheek to refer to the irony of the situation. At least that’s what I thought when I read the article because it’s Robert Fisk! He is one of the best Middle East correspondents, if not the best of all, but I am sure you already know that.

I don’t think Obama will go to war anyway… The House of Commons in the UK will be voting against a military intervention… and the security council won’t grant its approval… Russia will veto it for sure… at least that’s what I am hoping for because a military intervention in Syria will be much more catastrophic than it was in Iraq. It’s the lesser of two evils.
