Kung Fu Divas is an intriguing movie as it mixes broad humor, character drama, satire and Kung Fu adventure. But with these seemingly contrasting elements, was the movie able to successfully blend it all in one package worth seeing on the big screen?

After years of trying and failing, Charlotte (Ai Ai Delas Alas) is finally closer to her dream of becoming a beauty queen. She’s competing for the “Hiyas ng Dalampasigan” and with no viable competition in sight, the crown is within her grasp. But out of nowhere, Samantha (Marian Rivera) arrives and ruins her dream in an instant. Soon, the two become bitter rivals but a mysterious man tells them that their lives are connected and they are destined to save a Chinese mystical clan from an evil force.

The broad humor of Kung Fu Divas didn’t work for me as I felt like it was trying way too hard to be funny. Comical music score and elaborate visual puns were quite excessive that it loses the punchline even before it lands. But when the movie eased off from its frenetic pace and focused on character dynamics, the comedy was more effective. A simple uttering of the line “Thank you for that wonderful question” in a perfectly-timed scene is funnier than the flamboyant set pieces.

One surprising element about this movie is its very earnest take on the standards of beauty and why women are drawn to be attractive. While the story makes fun of beauty pageants, it actually touches on a very realistic take on why being beautiful is not simply because of vanity. Through a couple of well-written breakdown monologues, Kung Fu Divas was able to address that there’s a different pressure for women to be beautiful. It’s a very insightful message and for that alone I would recommend the movie.

The visual aspect of the movie is commendable. There are a couple of misses like close up shots of the stars during fight scenes but in general, Kung Fu Divas was able to deliver a very convincing world of heightened reality. The hard work from the production crew to make the visuals look good is clearly seen on screen. Sure, we still need to improve on some areas but this movie shows that we are going to the right direction.

The movie also works thanks to the strong chemistry between its two stars. While De las Alas tends to go over the top in some scenes, she was still able to pull through in the end. Meanwhile, Rivera shines in the movie as she is fully committed to the character and I must say she was impressive during a revelation/breakdown scene. It’s a twist that’s both clever and emotional that requires for the actress to be funny and endearing at the same time and she pulled it off effortlessly.

Kung Fu Divas is far from perfect but the level of commitment displayed on screen and the surprising heartfelt take on defining a person’s identity puts it a notch higher than your typical local mainstream movie.

Marian Rivera from being a Primetime Queen of GMA7 now a producer.

For the first time Marian Rivera is a producer of their own movie entitled “KungFu Divas” together with her co-actress and Queen of Concert Queen Ms. Ai-Ai De Las Alas.

KungFu Divas” is October offering of the Reality Entertainment and The O&Co. Picture Factory distribute by Star Cinema.

This film is a story about two bitter rivals in “Hiyas ng Dalampasigan” beauty pageant namely Charlotte (AiAi) and Samantha (Marian), who will be forced to become allies after an unexpected turn of events that put the lives of many in danger.

Can you set aside rivalry and sacrifice your own life for ‘world peace?’

What really like this film is how Marian Rivera and Ai-ai De Las Alas combined the beauty and the comedy aspect as we know Marian Rivera is one of the best actress interms of drama and Ai-ai De Las Alas in comedy but what make this film different to other action-comedy film is how they handle the really drama of action and how they executed it especially the amazing special effect of this movie.

This film is directed by Direk Onat Diaz. (Trivia this is the debut full length movie film of Direk Onat, he started doing some TVC and Indie Film.)

KungFu Divas showing in theaters on October 2, 2013.

Trivia: Reality Entertainment is the one behind the success of On the Job also know as OTJ.

TRMD: Best Decision EVER!

The Rich Man’s Daughter could have been this:

The show was supposed to feature Marian Rivera playing Jade’s part. Seriously, I was stoked for this one because I know how great an actress Marian Rivera is. She did a great job with Marimar.

Seriously dude, she was the perfect Marimar. She can dance and she can go from innocent (Marimar) to badass (Bella Aldama). XD

Also, I loved her in her movie with Richard Gutierrez called “My Bestfriend’s Girlfriend”.

Dude, “My Bestfriend’s Girlfriend” is my favorite heterosexual romantic comedy movie EVER!

And well, I had fun watching her together with Ai Ai Delas Alas in the movie “Kung Fu Divas”.

Their tandem is undeniably hilarious.

But because of delicate pregnancy, Marian had to withdraw from the show. They had to find a quick replacement and that’s where Rhian Ramos was chosen to replace Marian.

Come to think of it, I thought that Marian Rivera is the only actress who can pull off such role (even if it’s her first time) because:

a.) Looks-wise, Marian Rivera is perfect. She’s pretty and she looks like an heiress.

b.) She’s a versatile actress. She can play bida (protagonist) and kontrabida (antagonist) roles and she’s one of the few actresses who excel and are effective in any kind of movie genre (comedy, drama, historical, horror, etc.). At least in my opinion, she is.

So yeah, even if it’s her first time to play a lesbian role, I bet she can pull it off!

As for Rhian Ramos, well, she’s one of GMA 7′s top-caliber stars. And she’s a badass race car driver too!

But with no preparation at all, it was uncertain whether she can pull off Jade’s character or not. I watched her interview online and there it was said that Rhian was offered the role on a Friday night. She was given the script on a Sunday and she started taping the show on a Monday. While her co-stars were already familiar with their characters already, Rhian was just getting to know who Jade is. I guess that’s the reason why Rhian did so well in portraying Jade. Jade is on the process of getting to know herself as well. And well, the moment Jade found herself (thank you, Althea), whoa, that’s when I saw Rhian’s acting level-up. Her passion, her acting’s intensity? It leveled-up. Her acting was so heartfelt that I can’t help but cry (almost, lol) whenever Jade and Althea are faced with the prospect of separation.

Really, she’s on a roll and I can’t help but wonder: “WHY DIDN’T GMA 7 CAST HER IN THIS SHOW IN THE FIRST PLACE?!” She is the perfect Jade. Jade is definitely her breakthrough role!

Seriously, look how hot she and Glaiza are. They already look like a hot lesbian couple. Their on-screen chemistry is <3 <3 <3. If they become a real-life couple (which is really impossible because both of them are straight, lol), then WHOA! That’d be really awesome, wouldn’t it? LOLz. XD

Rhian Ramos as Jade? BEST DECISION EVER!!!

Do you think that casting in Rhian Ramos as Jade is the BEST DECISION EVER, as well? Why or why not? Who else do you have in mind as Jade?
