kriminal

try to google Kriminal, that is like an italian comic where the protagonist look like fantaman but evil

Oh my god okay THIS is actually HILARIOUS OKAY LISTEN HERE

so in 1962, an Italian comic series was created called “Diabolik,” and it was about this anti-hero kinda ninja-ish character (with guns).  HEAVY on the pulp-fiction vibe and whatnot, Diabolik got WILDLY POPULAR

but yeah so

so now here’s this whole genre for evil-looking hero characters, or at least evil-looking main characters with questionable methods.  and now, NOW, in 1964, we have

KRIMINAL

komplete with the k in his name so you know he’s totally original and not at all a reference to Diabolik

but the Kriminal kharacter was also korrupt and kinda kreepy (I can’t keep this up) and very much not a straight-up good guy in the slightest.  In fact, true to his name, he was very much a criminal–to the point of being a master thief and kinda-sorta a sadistic serial killer, though true to he’s-the-main-character form he targeted the men who had pushed his father to suicide

THEN THE GOLDEN BAT MOVIE, IN 1966, GETS ITS OVERSEAS ADAPTATIONS

LOOK, GUYS, IT’S DEFINITELY NOT DIABOLIK

but why did they color him reeeeeed

so when the Golden Bat movie first made it to Italy, they’re like “HMM.  HOW KAN WE KAPITALIZE ON THIS KOOKY SKELETON KHARACTER”

so they model his promo stuff around both Diabolik and Kriminal and call his movie “IL RITORNO DI DIAVOLIK” (which means exactly what you think it does) even though his movie is completely different in tone and characters from any of the others.  look.  who is this blondie.  everybody in this movie is Japanese

so basically, Italy of this time period should and definitely would have way too many characters along this vein, and it makes me so delighted to see folks know about them
