Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The importance of cooking before dungeon crawling ⊟

[Here’s Francesco Dagostino’s followup to this week’s previous Etrian Odyssey  piece, explaining why the upcoming Untold 2 is such a successful remake.]

Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight is a lovely game.

After spending over 80 hours beating every boss, exploring every corner the dungeon floors and finding every secret, I can say without a doubt that it’s my favorite entry in the Etrian series. In fact, it’s not only my favorite one, but also what I believe to be THE BEST one.

EO2U is a remake of Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard, adding classes, skills and other “stuff” to the original game, like Untold did for Etrian Odyssey. Also like Untold, it also introduces a meaty new Story mode, in which you follow five adventurers trying to brave the mysterious dungeon that towers over the city of High Lagaard, which is pretty cool. Oh, also, this game has multiple save slots, so you can actually test both Story and Classic mode without having to start over every time. Good job, Atlus!

EO2U, while being very faithful to his ancestor, manages to feel like a completely new game, even more than EOU did with the original Etrian Odyssey. The way gameplay, design and balance changes make their way more or less subtly to its very core grant it a fresh, modern and incredibly polished feel. And unlike many RPGs, even if it shares the genre’s grindy nature, EO2U is never boring. Actually, it’s quite the opposite: the battles are fun and fast and you can draw the dungeon map, and drawing is ALWAYS FUN!

Etrian Odyssey 2 remake announced ⊟

As with Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millennium Girl, Atlus is remaking the second DS game from its first-person RPG series, subtitling this sequel Knight of Fafnir, according to Gematsu. It will release in Japan this Winter.

The 3DS remake will feature animation from Madhouse (Summer Wars, Etrian Odyssey Untold), a story campaign with premade characters, and a new feature that allows the protagonist to transform into a darker version of himself during battles, presumably with special abilities.

Huh.  The localization VAs having been growing on me, and I’m starting to enjoy them.

(Like Fear/Confusion-status-Arianna’s “O~OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!! :D”)

Intending to play iiji modo story mode first (with class changing these two for conditional drops - instant death is Ronin-only I think… -) for an overall mellow pace as I play through it, THEN I shall NewGame+ in Expert Classic.

And only them because:

Leon (Fafnir) - I can’t.
Flavio - Utility purposes
Chloe - Higher LUK stat
Arianna - Walking Amrita with her Force Break among other healing things that I’ve grimoire’d and am going to grimoire
Bertrand - The only one left over

Hey EO tag! You know that really epic 40min EO medley? Turns out Aether has a few EOU2 remixes up their sleeve. Here’s Ginnungagap’s standard battle theme.

Review: From the demo I can truly say that it lived up to my expectations~ I was always curious about the food in the EO world and now there are so many interesting dishes w/ added bonuses for your party! It’s always nice to see the new added enemies for this generation as well as looking forward to looking through and completing the Monstrous Codex. I had really hoped there would be something that you could do when taking a break from exploring the stratums like in EOIII where you could experience different adventure s and mini bosses or EOIVs airship exploration and mini dungeons. I absolutely love the feature that let’s you know when you’ve exhausted resource points and taken treasure from an area already. And the new BGMs especially in battle music and when the protagonist transforms are really catchy it may take the place of “The End of Raging Waves” from EOIII~
