What do you guys make of that scene in the GoF where D tells H to 'keep her bushy head down'. Do you think he was jut taunting or do you like to believe that somewhere, deep inside he actually was worried about H?
In the book, Ron, Harry, and Hermione stumble upon Draco, who is very calmly watching the chaos, which would seem to imply that he was forewarned about it. Draco is somewhat snide about how Ron tripped over a tree root and then, “Ron told Malfoy to do something that Harry knew he would never have dared say in front of Mrs. Weasley.” (Goblet of Fire, page 121).
Instead of arguing with Ron, Draco tells them: “Hadn’t you better be hurrying along now? You wouldn’t like her spotted, would you?”
When Hermione asks what he means, Draco replies, “Granger, they’re after Muggles. D’you want to be showing off your knickers in midair? Because if you do, hang around….they’re moving this way, and it would give us all a laugh.” (Goblet of Fire, page 122)
Harry and Ron argue that Hermione is a witch, and then over Draco’s use of the word “mudblood” and then over where Draco’s parents are, with Harry saying that Malfoy’s parents are probably out there with masks on. Draco doesn’t deny it, only saying that if they were, he wouldn’t tell Harry.
As Hermione pulls them away, Draco calls out to her, “Keep your bushy head down, Granger.” (Goblet of Fire, page 123).
So was he warning her? Or taunting her?
I believe he was warning her. He may not like Harry or Ron, but he goes out of his way to tell Hermione not once or twice, but THREE times in a very short scene to stay out of the way, keep her head down, and avoid being seen by those causing all of the chaos.
Remember, this is AFTER she punched him in the face in Prisoner of Azkaban. There’s no love lost there. She punched him and embarassed him in front of his friends, but he still warns her repeatedly at the Quidditch World Cup.
If he were truly a sadist, he wouldn’t care, and indeed might delight in watching her be humiliated or tortured. But that’s not who he is, and this is confirmed in Half-Blood Prince when the task to let Death Eaters into Hogwarts and kill Dumbledore nearly breaks Draco. He’s a jerk in a lot of ways, and he behaves pretty badly for a lot of the series, but he’s not a killer, and he takes no delight in seeing Hermione harmed.
So the tl;dr version is yes, I believe he was warning her. ;)
