kitchen skill

instagram

Here is thing I learned when I was 29, which I now give away for free:

If you want to do a thing, do it now, or as soon as feasible. Because there might not be a later.

If it is a complicated or expensive or hard thing that takes many stages or has a steep learning curve, start working on the parts you can work on while you can work on them, then move on to the next thing. Accept that there will be a lot of failures along the way, and that you can come back from nearly any mistake that doesn’t involve making a left turn in front of an oncoming semi. Concentrate on yourself and what you can do, and don’t rely on other people to fix things for you, even though you might love them or they you. (This doesn’t mean you can’t love friends or family or partners. Friends and family and partners, in the long run, are the thing other than Useful Work and Adventures that make life worthwhile. Well, all that, and a really nice coffee and tea kit in the kitchen and the skill to use it. But that last thing isn’t terribly expensive unless you make it be.)

But to succeed at a thing–a job, a relationship–in the long term, the thing is: You Must Commit, even though commitment is scary. And commitment is scary because once you’re in you’re in. It’s not bobbing around close to the shore, paddling with your feet. It’s both feet and swimming as hard as you can out where the rip currents and the sharks are, where the water turns blue.

You can’t hold back because you’re afraid of getting hurt: you have to accept that you are going to get hurt, and put your hand in the fire of your own free will.

It’s like climbing. You can make sure you’ve got good ropes and a belayer you trust (you SHOULD make sure you have good ropes and a belayer you trust!), but there’s moves you can’t make unless you’re willing to risk falling. I’m not saying follow your bliss off a cliff, in other words: part of being prepared and committed is having the right kit, whether it’s money in the bank for the lean times when starting off as a freelancer, or a partner who supports your work, or being young enough that starving in a cold room for a few years with pneumonia is romantic (I have the T-shirt!).

That’s why it’s scary. It’s scary because you are taking an actual chance.

But: things don’t work out the way you want them to if you just kind of drift along seeing what will happen. Nice things might happen! …but they didn’t, for me.

Basically, what I figured out was that I had to be a protagonist if I wanted anything to happen, and part of being a protagonist was accepting that I might fail. And then have to deal with that failure. And that if I didn’t do it I would more or less inevitably fail, but I could pretend to myself that it wasn’t because I wasn’t good enough and that I didn’t know why.

Seeking success, in other words, meant letting go of a layer of ego defense.

This realization directly led to me having the career I always wanted, and doing pretty well at it.

It also led to me having the best relationship of my life. I wish I’d learned it when I was sixteen, rather than twenty-nine, but I had some things I had to work through first.

So that thing you want to do? Assuming it’s not illegal or immediately fatal? Do it now.

Magickal Skills | Enchanting

This form of magick is incredibly practical and easy to do. I believe magick is more potent when it is personal, so take what you will and make it your own!

What you’ll need:

  • any item you want to enchant (a ring, pendant, anything. It doesn’t have to be jewelry)
  • relevant magickal tools to imbue your item like herbs, or crystals
  • at least one candle
  • incense, either hand ground or store bought incense
  • a small bag or box
  • a small jar or bowl (optional)

Ritual:

  • create a sacred space/cast a circle
  • once inside your magickal space, light a candle to help amplify and cleanse the circle
  • once you initiate the ritual, it’s important that you stay focused on the task and the intent you are setting for the item you are enchanting
  • light your chandles, and tell them what their job is while you light it (I like to have a couple candles designated for specific things, like holding space, purifying, ect.)
  • If you grind your own herbs for incense, grind them now
  • light your incense
  • pass the item through a candle flame to clear any previous energies (I once used a really old skeleton key, so this step took a long time and various methods)
  • hold the item above the smoke while focusing on your enchantment
  • this step really depends on your method, but I like to use herbs and candle wax. Grind up a pinch of herbs and place them in the jar/bowl. You can put other things in too, but they might get ruined with wax, so it’s wise to use disposable stuff. Place your item in the ground herbs so that you will be able to pull it out after the wax dries. Focus on your intention, or spell, and carefully cover the herbs with wax from a designated candle (this candle shouldn’t be used for anything else in this ritual)
  • If you did the step above, let this sit for at least a full day, and when you feel its ready, create another circle with a similar set up (If you set up any sort of altar, just leave it the same way until you finish the last few steps)
  • if you are using any crystals, place them and anything else you want in the bag or box with the item and seal it
  • leave them in a safe place for several days, and every time you think about it, go to it and reinforce your enchantment
  • when you feel its time, remove the item and carry it with you!

YAOMOMO & BAKUGOU FRIENDSHIP

  • MC, walking into the kitchen: Is something burning?
  • Yukimura, leaning seductively against the counter: Only my desire for you.
  • MC: Yukimura, the counter is on fire.
  • Yukimura: (*´・v・;)
  • MC: ...and so are your clothes now
  • Yukimura: (;*´・v・;;)

I’ve been debating starting a cooking channel on Youtube after I move to Denver. Cooking is something that I am very passionate about and is a great creative outlet for me. I already have a list of episodes I would make which include vegan & vegetarian friendly meals, kitchen skills, and stuff like that. There’s already a list of 200 recipes I would like to film! What do you all think? Would you support me?

Who doesn’t want to stab things and make what’s essentially a jar spell for joyous energy that you can drink later?

The resulting potion is VERY sweet, aromatic, and somewhat bitter. You could lower the sugar, but I think it’s worth it to keep the 44 theme and just dilute it with something when you drink it down the line.

There’s a lot of variations on this recipe out there, including some very interesting ones in Normandy. I’d love to hear about any you know!

Sleepovers with NCT Dream

Ok so in regards to that last post I reblogged, here are some resources if you’re a follower and you don’t know a THING about cooking:

Basic knife safety and skills

Cast iron cookware: how to use it (srsly cast iron is the best, 25 bucks will get you a skillet that will follow you to the grave if you take care of it)

How to save money by deboning whole chickens yourself + chicken karaage recipe (You can save money on MOST meat by buying large quantities and doing a little bit of butchering yourself! It’s very easy)

How to sear meat

How to roast various vegetables

And some cooking channels that will teach you even more:

Foodwishes (my FAVORITE with 1300+ recipes, mostly american ones but there’s some foreign-inspired food. There’s a pun in every recipe, too!)

Laura Vitale (Lots of american, italian, and “pinterest” food lol.)

Tasty (yknow those recipes your mom shares on facebook? They all come from here. But damn if these aren’t the easiest, fastest recipes, and they ALWAYS come out amazing for me)

Maangchi (A sweet korean lady who makes authentic korean food)

Cooking with dog (japanese and japanese-style western food. Doesn’t update often since Francis the dog passed away last november :( )

Hiroyuki Terada (More japanese food, mostly sushi. He has some videos of kitchen skills as well though! He holds a world record for his chopping skills.)

Chefsteps (these guys have recipes that are a little bit more difficult/fancy, and they’re constantly trying to sell their sous vide machine, but their recipes and tips are good :)

bbq pit boys (if you like meat and have a barbecue or smoker, this is the channel for you!)

That’s all of the channels I use, but there’s a dedicated channel for any kind of food from cakes to caribbean. Now go cook, there’s so much more to eat out there than fast food!!

hey mom, I'm not in a very good place rn. It stresses me and makes me hate my sexuality sometimes, I know you're busy and your prompts are full but could I please have a small sanvers fic with maybe a teen soft butch in it? I feel like I really need good rep rn... if u dont want just delete this, its okay

She’s in the field and she’s got her game face on – shoulders set, stance relaxed but ready, eyes sharp – and when J Cole’s Hold It Down blasts out of her back pocket, her work partner cocks a grin at you.

“Your kid?”

She grins at the term and answers quickly.

“Adrian, I’m on the job, what up?”

“Can I bring a kid to our dinner tonight? Remember that girl Val I was telling you about? She’s trippin cause she had a rough time in school today – “

“Yeah, course you can, kid.”

“You gotta go.”

Maggie grins at his sensitivity, his perceptiveness. “You could be a detective yourself, Ade. See you both tonight.”

She chews the inside of her cheek – a habit she’s been picking up from her girlfriend – and shoots a quick text off to Alex, telling her to expect one more tonight before pocketing her phone and sighing, squatting to analyze the tire marks leftover by the latest Cadmus lackey getaway car.

She pushes tonight’s dinner – a biweekly thing, dinner with her girlfriend and her college boy (she never tires of reminding him how proud she is that he’s in college) – to the back of her mind until she walks through the door of her apartment several hours later to find in her kitchen Alex, Adrian, and a short kid – must the the Val girl Adrian was talking about – with a dapper, short haircut, make-up free face, collared shirt and khakis, skin darker than hers but lighter than Adrian’s, smile just as bright.

Alex has the look of panicked glee of a pale five year old being caught with her hand in the cookie jar; Adrian’s holding the handle of a smoking frying pan with one hand and pointing at Alex with the other; and the new kid is frozen mid-laugh, eyes wide and nervous at finally meeting the detective she’s heard so much about from Adrian.

Maggie appraises the situation with a single glance and grins.

“Alex tried to cook.”

“I – “

“All good, Danvers, we’ll order in, but I gotta say, I’m still surprised your skills in the lab don’t transfer to the kitchen – “

“Hehe, your skills – “

“That’s enough out of you, young man.”

“Yes, Agent Danvers.”

Maggie laughs and shakes her head at their banter as she drops her gun and jacket on a chair and strides over with her hand out to greet the new kid.

“Maggie Sawyer,” she says, leaving the usual NCPD part out because the girl is looking more nervous by the second.

“Valerie.”

“But you prefer Val?” Maggie asks, and Adrian nods behind Val’s back in case she isn’t brave enough to say yes. She is, and she nods, and Maggie smiles warmly at her.

“Okay, Val, so. What’re you hungry for, aside from whatever my woman charred on the stove?”

“Hey – “

“Is it not true, Danvers?”

Alex scowls playfully and Maggie leans in for a kiss. Adrian squeals and leans into Val. “Told you they were the cutest couple ever. My real life OTP!”

Val smiles, but there’s sadness behind it.

“Bad day, kid?” Alex asks, and gestures her to the couch.

“She likes this girl,” Adrian knocks his shoulder into Val gently, and she shoves him with an embarrassed laugh on her face. Alex ooohs and Maggie squeals, and Val almost cries, because she’s never met grown-ups who were this excited to hear about her crushes on girls before.

“She’s really pretty,” Val confesses in a single breath, collapsing onto the couch with her knees spread wide and heat spreading across her shyly smiling face.

“Okay, tell. Everything. But first, tell me what you want for food.”

“Whatever’s fine. Pizza, maybe.”

Maggie chuckles as she takes out her phone to order. “Always with the pizza in this family.”

Alex kisses her and Adrian squeezes her knee when they catch her family comment, and Val flushes to be so easily included in such a term.

“Nothing, I just… she’s really good at math – “

“A definite turn on – “

“Oh, is that why you like coming to my lowly easy-bake oven lab, Danvers?”

“Ladies! There are children present!”

“I’m not a children, I’m sixteen!”

Children,” Adrian, Alex, and Maggie all chorus, and Val rolls her eyes and continues.

“There’s the math thing, and she’s just really sweet, she always sticks up for the kids who get picked on, and she’s got these gorgeous curls and she’s – “

“Super duper femmey, and totally into soft little butches like yourself,” Adrian says and pokes her in the belly gently. She swats at his hand and shrugs defeatedly.

“I dunno. I mean, I’m not just into femmes… but she is super femmey… but maybe she wants someone harder than me? Or like, femmier than me? Like, less gay, maybe, or more gay, or – ”

“So, basically, you’re creating a girl who’s anything but you in your mind, right?” Maggie grins with a tilted head, and Val sighs.

“I guess.”

Maggie squints at her and exhales sharply and wets her lips and speaks.

“You know before I met Danvers over here, it was… I dated. A lot.”

“Don’t worry Alex. You won,” Adrian whispers, and Alex slaps him five softly without taking her eyes off Maggie.

“I dated, but it was… it was women who didn’t get me, you know? They saw leather jackets and a cop badge and a bike and darker skin than theirs – god, too many white girls, sorry babe, but that’s a story for another day – so they expected me to be a certain type of way, expected me to be… well, more butch, you know? Like, all the time. They were interested in the role I could play – and I can play it, I can be it, and I like it, I love doting on women – “

Val smiles and nods and Alex blushes and Adrian snickers.

“But that’s not all I am, you know?” She shrugs. “Sometimes I like a little lace under the leather. And we’ve got different styles, you and me.” She gestures to Val’s hair cut, her looser clothes, with a grin. “And I love it. Your style. It’s absolutely fantastic. And you look really at home in it. And that’s the thing. You? How you feel, how you are? That’s the only thing that matters. So if she likes you, she’s gotta like your soft butchliness. And who wouldn’t, I mean look at you, you’re perfect.”

Val scoffs and Alex beams at Maggie and Adrian squeezes Val’s knee.

The doorbell rings and Adrian squeals. “Pizza!”

Maggie glances at Alex, and Alex nods with a grin before getting up to get the door.

“Your girl like pizza?” Maggie asks, and Val nods.

“I saved her the last slice last week at the school paper’s party when she was late from class. She was really happy.”

Maggie slaps her own thigh in excitement. “Damn girl, see, you got game! Wanna invite her over? We can watch crappy Netflix movies, and the three of us will check out if she checks you out and it’ll be awesome.”

Val smiles at the thought and pulls her phone out of her back pocket.

“Do you guys do this for all of us? Open up your home like this?”

Alex beams over the small stack of pizza boxes when Maggie looks up at her, and Adrian grins widely, proudly, gratefully, at them both as he cracks open a box and digs in immediately.

“Only to the cool kids,” Maggie teases, and Val nods, and types out a text to her crush, because she’s nervous but she’s perfect just like she is, and what’s there not to like, right, Maggie said so, and also, pizza.

Pizza with new family.

Even if her crush declines to come over, she’s pretty sure it’s going to be a good night.

♡ What…?
♡ Nooooooo…!
♡ Her cooking was so good…
♡ He brought one over with a pout on his face
♡ Your sheepish grin told him all he needed to know
♡ “Baaaabe! You lied to meeeeee~!”
♡ He pretends to be all hurt but honestly didn’t mind
♡ “If you don’t want to cook, let me know! I can cook, or help you pick out takeout with you!”
♡ You both end up laughing it off, enjoying the rest of your night together.

Zen

smol gasp
Takeout is bad for his skin
♡ “Babe! What is this??”
♡ Can you say drama queen
♡ After a while of pretending to be upset, he pulled you in and kissed your forehead.
♡ “I know you wanted to make this day special… but I hope you don’t feel like you need to lie about it. Any day with you is special. I don’t care what we eat, or whatever date we go on. If I’m with you, I will be happy”.

Jaehee

♡ When she pickup the takeout box, she bit her lip.
♡ She immediately understood, but wasn’t sure what to do about it.
♡ When she heard your footsteps approaching, she quickly shoved it in the trash bag, dumping something else on top of it so it wasn’t visible,
♡ After a short conversation and a quick peck on the lips, you left again
♡ She sighed, tying the bag off before taking it off
♡ She felt a tinge of disappointment that you had lied, but she knew you wanted to make tonight special for you two
♡ She felt that if she brought it up you may just feel defeated and embarrassed,  and she didn’t want to make you feel bad.
♡ She figured she’d save the conversation for another day

Jumin

♡ Takeout…?
♡ He took the box to you, incredibly confused
♡ “I never eat takeout, so how did this box end up here?”
♡ You giggled, your face turning red
♡ You explained you didn’t actually cook dinner, and the takeout boxes had your actual dinner
♡ It made him more confused
♡ “Why? I have a professional cook if you didn’t want to cook yourself?”
♡ Then it hit him
I ate commoner food
He refused to admit how good it was

Seven

♡ When he found the box, he dropped to his knees
♡ “Noooooooooooooooo!”
♡ You ran in the room in a panic, finding him hunched over the takeout box
♡ “I feel so betrayed!”
♡ “Seven-”
♡ “My life is a lie!”
♡ You started laughing at his dramaticness
♡ He pretended to sob into the box
♡ “You liiiiiied!”
♡ You were overcome with giggled now. “I’m sorry!”
♡ He grabbed onto you, sobbing into your shirt. “I’m so heartbroken…”
♡ You kissed the top of his head. “I’m sorry! Please forgive me?”
♡ He sniffed. “I might be able to… one day”.

Saeran

♡ He rolled his eyes when he found the box
♡ He walked into the room with it in hand
♡ “You know I don’t care if you can cook, right?”
♡ When you spun around and your face started to get red, he couldn’t help but smirk
♡ “I can’t cook either. Next time, I can help you pick out the takeout place… I don’t know any, but we can try them together”.

Slight deviation from the prompt. Right after I selected one, norah_beans on twitter basically threw down the gauntlet challenging me to write Olicity in Bed Bath and Beyond (after Marc’s comments earlier today). I’m bad at turning down challenges. So…. this happened. As with all flashfics, this is not betaed, edited or even reread. Completed in about two hours.

April 2020

“I don’t understand why we’re here.” Felicity blinks a few times as the automatic doors slide open and the bright sunshine gives way to the dull fluorescent lighting she generally associates with malls and grocery stores. She grabs a cart and swings Ellie off of her hip with practiced eased, sliding the not-quite-two-year-old into the built in seat, facing her before turning to Jules.

“Momma, I think I’m too big for the cart,” Jules announces. She’s five and dead-set on independence wherever she can grasp it. “It’s for babies.”

It would be sort of a tight squeeze with both of the girls up there and Ellie’s been teething lately, biting on anything and everything in arm’s reach in an attempt to cut her two-year molars. It would be best if one of those things within reach weren’t her sister.

“Okay, Jules, but stand on the end of the cart and hold on, okay?” Felicity asks, looking back toward her husband who’s been quickly distracted by some kitchen tools with functions she knows nothing about. “Honey?”

“Yeah,” he says, putting down the doodad and heading back to her side.

“This is going to be like Home Depot but worse, isn’t it?” she questions. He looks a little sheepish.
