I'm in a Malaysian Chinese independent school and we receive marks out of 100 on each subject, then multiply them by the number of periods our time schedule devotes to that subject, THEN divide the sum of all the marks by 58 which is the number of periods we have in a week. Our report card shows our final grade up to three decimals, and the difference between individual grades can be VERY close - the top student in our year beat 2nd by 0.02 iirc. Even a lower score in PE can make a big diff 😂
Also in our school 80 and above is an A, below 65 means you
can’t have two cocurricular clubs, and below 60 means you have to redo
your school year. That’s how almost 1.1k students in 1st year gets
narrowed down to 800+ by 5th year, and then drops all the way to 450 in
UEC cert year because half the form left school after SPM to take A
levels or similar foundation courses.
Your schooling system tries to make everyone elites. I wish it was a bit more indulgent it sounds super complicated.
